Follow-up Question:
If I'm reading the rules correctly, it state that a contestant can sign up for both the individual and group category.
Theoretically, does that mean a contestant can pass the preliminary round twice and appear twice in the finals? Or is there some sort of exception if this is the case?

Frequented the karaoke room last year, and by frequented I mean listened to singers! 
Missed the actual contest though, but I'm debating on giving this a shot!

A couple questions:

Are both the individual and group entries combined in the same karaoke contest?  Or are they separate contests?
And if they're part of the same contest, are individual and group entries judged differently?

can't answer the question about being judged differently although i doubt the differences are significant.
but yes both individuals and groups sing in the same contest.

If the leggings are opaque, and the skirt was a few inches above the knee (all part of a White Rabbit cosplay), would that be okay?

the skirt itself has to be the appropriate length, which is to the top of the knee itself. leggings opaque is fine, but the skirt itself needs to be the proper length

I'm hoping to do a Splicer inspired outfit and I have some questions to see what would be allowed. I intend on wearing a mask with a small amount of fake blood on it, is that acceptable? I also wanted to wear ripped stockings, not too heavily done but still clearly visible. My dress will be normal and of an acceptable length, so it's just the minor details I'm concerned with.

i personally can't answer the question about the mask; but the ripped stockings should be okay. again we're more concerned with the dress/skirt itself than the accessories that come with it. i will let a more senior member of the ball staff answer about the mask.

I'll be posting full contest rules after I get them double-checked for inconsistencies, but all these questions are super important, FAQ-level ones so I'm happy to answer them!

1) Are the song time limits still 2:00 for the first round and 5:00 for the finals?

Our preliminary song limit actually changed a couple years ago. In the rules it's now stated as:

Preliminary/Qualifying Round
1 minute OR verse/chorus (individual category)
2.5 minutes or less OR 2verse/chorus (group category)

The timing starts from when singing starts. These rules will allow you to perform a song that is edited for a TV opening or ending. For more unorthodox songs, a minute will give you plenty of time to show your stuff. These are soft limits and you are faded out gradually depending on where you are in your performance and other factors. You're always welcome to start your song at a certain point, or fade out after a limit you set for yourself though! Just talk to me about it at the tech desk and we'll make it work.

I kinda tuned out/forgot about this meeting until like...5 minutes ago XD I'm headed to San Jose now on caltrain to get my badge. My boyfriend and I will be around the convention center until about 8:30-ish, so if ppl wanna meet up just to meet each other then that sounds cool. Are there any restrictions on military service dress? I am in Air Force ROTC and I own my service dress.

off the top of my head i don't see why not. as long as the length of the dress is appropriate, then we're solid :)

Any recommendations on which dances are the most fun, beginner-friendly, or popular to learn? I feel really overwhelmed by the variety and I'm sure I won't have time to attend a lesson for each!

some of the easiest/beginner-friendly ones are the ones that almost everyone knows the name of
cha cha, salsa and waltz (by far the most popular dance)
the merengue is also very simple as well because its basically a stay-in-place sorta dance

Really excited for the Black and White Ball! The classes you offer each year are great as well. I remember one year (maybe 2 years ago?) there were beginner and intermediate classes offered. Will that happen this year? Since I already know the basics for several of the styles offered, I would really love to learn some more advanced moves/techniques. Perhaps private lessons would be a good option? Hopefully you will still offer those this year because I'd be really interested in taking them :)

there will be private lessons again, i believe in the mornings for saturday and sunday as well as at night on friday and saturday, maybe around the same time as other lessons. i dont THINK we're doin any intermediate classes persay, but i think that could be remedied through private lessons.

you're allowed to change it when you check in. the easiest thing is to have a CD (i dont think they accept any other format).  as long as your song fits within the requirement for the karaoke contest, then you can use it

Starting this year, we will also accept USB flash drives for the contest.

I was just wondering, are there any restrictions on the types of soles for the shoes? I know some formal ballrooms dont like you to have certain kinds of soles, and the shoes I want to wear Im not sure meet those requirements.... Its very hard to find shoes that meet ballroom requirements, really.

Also, My dress meets all the requirements, but Im uncomfortable showing my shoulders and arms as much as that dress shows, so when I wear it to other events I usually wear a shawl over it. There isnt any mention if shawls are allowed or not. Is wearing a shawl with a pin to keep it on ok?

for the soles, i know that we generally gravitate toward soles that WON'T mark the floor. official answer i will leave that for rebecca

for the shawl, absolutely you can wear it. there's no rule that says you cant. just yea, pin it to your dress or something to keep it on

Hi! Just a question on the shoes. What's the stance on wedges? The pair I'm considering purchasing is a little smaller than the nickel at the tip but since the pressure is most spread out than a regular heel of the same height I was wondering if that's within the policy. (Plus it's comfortable! :D)

the answer for wedges i'm unfortunately also gonna have to leave for rebecca. wedges as a whole are okay, i wore some last year. but my base was an actual full base and didn't end in a tip-type-thing. i'd say look for something else in the meantime, and wait for an official word from either becca or maybe even kevin :)
