Ok so, I have been going to FAnime for about 4 years. I started back in 2006.

What I noticed, was that I am spending a lot of time by myself and doing my own thing all those years

I would see groups and masses of people hanging out, and I would ponder to myself "How did they all become friends?"

So I'm basically a loner dude who is looking to make some new friends.

Like, talk to me about your experiences and how you developed a network of friends through the convention. (I have none)

Do you go to certain gatherings?
Do you go to certain events?
Do you just walk up to people and randomly talk to them? (lol this is considered creepy right?)

I mean, there is events like Speed Dating and I think I'm gonna try that too just to make some new friends
but I want would like to know if there are more events like this, where you can meet new people intentionally and make new friends.

sorry, my network of friends in the anime world is very low
I have what you could consider a 'network of friends', but because I'm based on the other side of the Pacific, I'm lucky to see them offline even once every year or two.
They on the other hand, tend to have dozens of people which they can see on a monthly (or more) basis. Makes things a bit hard. :/

I'd love a Winter FanimeCon!
Then have Fanime at the same time, in Northern Victoria.  :P

Why "can't" Fanime take them? All you should need from a "ID" is a name, and maybe the photo - which school IDs provide.

School IDs are not standardized and do not have any security features. AKA easily faked and therefore not acceptable. School IDs also do not have identifying information or address. Primarily, the school IDs do not give us any reliable way to identify you.
... I had no idea that the paranoia was so wide spread. Rampant paranoia out of the government is one thing, one expects the government to be insane. But to see it so widely spread in the general population is... worrying.

In past post, the quote.

Q: Why don't you take student IDs?
A: Student IDs are inconsistent and not standardized, and as such, we cannot take them.

so early registration gets laminated badges or just regular ID's?
Unfortunately early registration just gets regular IDs, but the badges still come with the ability to access the convention for the whole weekend, which is what ultimately matters  :).
What are "regular" IDs?

Oh, no, I understand that. I'm not questioning the necessity of the name on the badge at all, just on it's emphasis over the pseudonym. Most conventions I've gone to have had both, and I completely understand why my legal name needs to be visible as well.
Very few of the conventions I've been to have had someone's 'legal' name.
Any time I get a con badge with my so called "legal" name on it, said name very quickly gets covered by black marker.

"Pre Registration:
$55 until 11:59pm PST March 31, 2011

Very top of the page. http://www.fanime.com/registration-faq/
It wasn't there until just a few days before hand. There wasn't even a price on the website at all until I questioned it 5 weeks ago. Before then, the only way to get the price off the site was to go through the reg system and sign up.

QuoteI'm sorry that you missed our posts, but we made several warnings on our Twitter/Facebook account as well as listed the cut off time/date on the Registration FAQ. If there are any other places that we missed, please let us know and we'll consider it.
Not everyone has (or wants) Twitter or Facebook.

Gender and name are fairly serious issues for me. It's the difference between being depressed and well... not being depressed. I was born with the body of the wrong gender. I get somewhat distressed when I see myself (either in a photo or in a reflective surface [such that I avoid those things whenever possible]) or when I see that little 'M' on my id.
Name is linked to the same thing. I could get it legally changed, but due to certain family issues and the cost of the actual name change and getting new documents issued, doing so isn't worth it until my documents start expiring in another 3-4 years.

There are two types of raw numbers. Attendees and Attendance.
Attendees are the amount of individual people at the event across the course of the weekend. (eg, you get a weekend badge and you count once)
Attendance is the amount of people who show up – per day. If you go 4 days, you get counted 4 times.

Each number is valid and useful for different things. However, there are many ways to generate those numbers. Some more accurate then others. How an event chooses to generate those numbers is up to that event. Some simply lie. Others guess. Some will take the amount of badges sold. Others will count the amount of badges actually given out.

Getting a useful and accurate number of attendees isn't as straightforward as many people might think.

Registration / reg questions
February 19, 2011, 12:27:12 AM
Hi

I'm from Australia, each year (since 2005), I've gone on a round the world trip stopping at different conventions around North America (mainly to meet up with friends that I'd otherwise never get to see). I have a list of about 20 conventions in the US that I've been trying to get to, but most of them fall in the parts of the year where I can't get leave from work. Thus, I haven't been able to get to a con in California. To date I've been to Anime Detour, Anizona, Sakuracon, Connecticon, Otakon (4 times), Anime Iowa, AnimeFest, Anime Evolution (twice), Kumoricon (twice), NDK, AWA and AFO and I run Melbourne Anime Festival (Manifest) and anime.au here at home. ^_^

This year, I'm hoping to change that. It's looking like I might be able to get leave for the Fanime weekend and head across the pond to San Jose for a few days (in addition to my normal trip later in the year).

So before I go and spend around $3,000 on flights, I have a few questions related to Fanime registration.

How much does it cost? The price is not listed on the website which only gives a link to the account registration. I assume the price only shows up when the site asks you to pay – hidden somewhere after you've made an account and filled in all the details...
What gets printed on the badge? Is it like Otakon where you can put any name you want on it once you get the badge, is there no name, or is a name pre-printed?
If a name is pre-printed, does it have to be my so called "legal" name?
Why does the account reg form ask for gender as a required question?
What happens when my preferred name doesn't match the name noted on my ID?

I know day 0 is for pre-reg, but Me and my lover will be coming form Arizona to attend the con ( 15-17 hour drive. UUUGGHHHHH.) and I'd like to ask some of the con vets what the the Pre-reg /normally/ starts, or at least starts to line up.
I'm considering flying out to Fanime. 3 aircraft and minimum 21 hours each way. ;P

It sounds like the pre reg line is shorter then the Otakon line. Last Otakon, there were people lining up to pick up their badges almost 30 hours before reg opened.
