WELCOME TO SPEED DATING!

Time for some info about SPEED DATING. We, the Speed Dating Department, have been working diligently to re-vamp our events this year. We're excited to incorporate a few things such as:

  • MORE Speed Dating sessions-- double that of last year!
  • Speed Dating 101 Workshop-- What IS Speed Dating? How does it even work? Where can I get some practice? This workshop will address all of those questions and more
  • Continued variety of Speed Dating-- LGBT sessions were a GREAT success last year and we will continue!

5-22-2014 Updates

The published online Pocket Guide has incorrect info. There is NO Friday Speed Dating. Please follow the correct information below, in the Program Guide, or at our website section: www.fanime.com/events/#speed-dating

Speed Dating 101 Workshops: Learn the basics and practice with us!

  • Saturday 10AM-11AM
  • Sunday 10AM-11AM

  • Saturday 12PM-2PM, 2PM-4PM, 4PM-6PM
  • Sunday 12PM-2PM, 2PM-4PM, 4PM-6PM

LGBT Sessions will be offered Saturday 2-4PM and Sunday 2-4PM.

Location: Marriott Hotel, Salon Rooms V and VI (5 and 6)

Pre-Registration: Not required, but all participants need to have a legitimate FanimeCon badge (Member or Staff)
ALL Attendees must come AT LEAST 10 minutes prior to desired Speed Dating Session WITH Proper Photo ID (proof of 18+YO)-- No Exceptions!

Speed Dating is happening this year-- hang on tight, fans! In the mean time, please post any questions or comments you may have here! Any suggestions are appreciated as well. Check back here often as FanimeCon comes closer or email us at speeddatingATfanimeDOTcom.

Edit 10-27: Would like to go as Mikasa OR Sasha, they are my faves :D and I look the most similar to them...short, black hair or by Fanime time, my hair would be mid-length and easily dye-able to brown. I can go as Sasha if I can find a Mikasa/Eren/Armin, etc. to be my cosplay partner :]

Is there an active Attack on Titan cosplay group/gathering in the Bay Area/San Jose to work on the costumes?? I lack in sewing machines and n00bie XD

First words to my girlfriend of 8 years "Can I take your picture?" She was dressed as Skuld from OMG, and I was a fanboy, what can I say? Met her again in October at SJSU anime club where we really started talking. I still have the picture that started it all though.   ;D

Proud to say we encourage mutual attraction through your interests/hobbies. That's how Speed Dating is supposed to work. Picking the hottest person in the room but with NOTHING in common with you is not suggested lol. Looks fade but mutual interests last :) There's someone for everyone out there, I believe! Keep good faith!

Ok...if not, than thank you for all you fans and my fellow hard working staffers for making con as awesome as always. For the fans for making the far far too many unpaid hours worth it when you simply smile at some over used, lame meme or yelp with joy when you get you badge knowing one of the most memorable weekends of the year has just started. And to all the staff that guide by their example of neverending devotion to the con and still be able to crack a joke after working 16 hours, or better yet laugh at the lame phrase that I try to pass as a sorry excuse of a joke after my wit has fully left me after 20 hours awake and walking nearly 7 miles just from walking exhibit halls. Thank you all! *collapses*

Loving the positivity here :) Coming from a legit psych/neurobio graduate, did you know that being positive and grateful can extend your live 5+ years xD

Thanks to all the fans for being patient and coming back every year :3 I attended FanimeCon since 2002 and decided to Staff to give back to the con and the fans. It's a lot of work, but please consider STAFFING in 2014!!! That's the best way to thank us ^^

Where is the info for the Fani-Mafia gatherings again :O?

Quote from: Otakuya on May 29, 2013, 09:30:35 PM
I've been a member of the Fanime boards for more than 10 years now. There was a group of us that tend to hang out every so often, usually at places like Oakridge, Great Mall, Golfland, park, someone's house, etc. We were known as "Fani-Mafia". That group is long gone, or just not posting on the forums anymore at least. I'd like to have a reunion someday and invite new members, if possible. Or start Fani-Mafia2 or something...
Whoa, anyways, glad you had fun at Fanime this year.

Wow, Saiyuki and Rurouni Kenshin. Never thought I hear those anime being mentioned again in this day and age.

My top 10 in no particular order:
Slayers, Pokemon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Haruhi Suzumiya, Hayate no Gotoku, Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Initial D, Yu-Gi-Oh/the Abridged Series, Maid-sama
(yeah, almost all old-school)

To Everyone who attended Speed Dating and FanimeCon...Ohohoho not a shameless plug at all ^w^

I love everyone and all! Or else I wouldn't spend time dealing with angry mobs of people and chaos WAHHH :D

Are there any rules that forbids someone from participating the event multiple times?

Participation is limited to one session per day.

Hhhmmm...... I might consider going if the ratio of male:female are balanced.... I keep hearing that there are usually more guys than girls....

Ratio of the lines are unpredictable as we cannot predict the future...however inside the event, it is 1:1 per person ratio for m/f and LGBT days.

Hello Recrimage, thank you for your interest. We have an official section on the FanimeCon website http://www.fanime.com/events-and-exhibits/events/#speed-dating as well as this official forum thread. In addition, we were previously recruiting for Staff on the forums and website but are no longer doing so. We also have an official email as well [email protected] or you can simply personal message me or yaki-ika. You can contact us in various ways whichever for your convenience.

However as mentioned, we are not recruiting for Staff. We need Volunteers for the event but you would have to sign up to be a volunteer for FanimeCon in general and see if they have spots available to help with Speed Dating. Their email should be [email protected].

hello, I was hoping to help out with the speed dating event as well, but I didn't find any contact info, e-mail, etc..
Who should I talk to about helping for this event?

Speed Dating NYC

Hello Hanimani,

We recommend coming at least 10 minutes earlier to be eligible. However we do have fans coming 1/2hr-1hr+ prior to the event. It really depends on the time and day. By any chance, are you associated staff with Speed Dating NYC?

OK... forgive my ignorance, but is there a description of this event somewhere on the site or boards?

We have an Official Speed Dating 2013 Forum Thread: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,18000.0.html.

And our Event info on the official FanimeCon website: http://www.fanime.com/events-and-exhibits/events#speed-dating

Hello Kaizoku,

We apologize for your unpleasant experience last year. As this is a very popular event, we try our best to accommodate everyone.

As for the "rude and unorganized staff", if you are willing to personal message me or email us at speeddatingATfanimeDOTcom, then we can try to understand and help remedy the situation. If you remember your experience or specifically which staff was rude to you, then we can properly take actions. However repeatedly posting that you had a bad experience will neither help us and keep you unhappy.

Last year as it was explained via email and forums, we had opened a pre-registration for the event BUT your participation was not guaranteed unless you received a specific confirmation for your time slot and date. Alternatively, if you did receive a confirmation email for your pre-registration but came late/absent, then we let fans who waited in line to participate. Either way, those are the two top reasons why fans couldn't participate: misunderstanding of their pre-registration or tardiness/absence.

To address this confusion and problem, we decided this year to not have pre-registration for the event. It is first-come, first-serve waiting in line. We also have more speed dating sessions to allow fans more opportunities to be able to participate.

However, if neither of the reasons applied to you and you felt like we did treat you rudely, then I sincerely apologize. It would be unprofessional-like of me to not try to understand your situation but at the same time, we need your cooperation to understand and solve the problem. Thank you.

*How successful everyone thought it was?
It was packed.
*Was it worth going?
If you are interested in meeting new people.
*How many attendees were there?
It was packed.
*Im curious about the guy/girl ratio as well
More guys.
*What did you think was negative about the event? (If anything)
Rude and unorganized staff. Was registered, but denied entry because they were packed. Non-registered were allowed in before I was.

Hello Everyone,

This is Donna, co-head of Speed Dating. Thanks crystalsoul and fans who have responded on this column as we encourage communication among our fans and staff. Please keep in mind that everyone had a different experience and no event is perfect although we try our best to accommodate all. Although our event is limited by the amount of people, this year we have in total 7 sessions of Speed Dating. If a fan really wants to participate, we believe that having multiple events will allow them a chance to do so.

For the guy/girl ratio, we do not have a definitive count of that ratio for fans waiting in line. But as mentioned, it will be 1:1 guy-girl ratio inside the event. This year, the event will be moreso structured that we will advise fans on how to speed date and present a more decorative and intimate environment. In addition, we have had success stories of fans uniting through this event. We are happy to hearso and hope that there will be more success stories this year :)

We also have an Official Speed Dating 2013 Forum Thread: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,18000.0.html.

Furthermore unless you are getting an answer from a Speed Dating Co-Head (me or yaki-ika), it is NOT an official statement or representation from Speed Dating department. So please keep that in mind. Also if your concerns are personal or private, we are able by email as well [email protected]; email correspondence is moreso reserved for serious inquiries and concerns and we appreciate your awareness of that.

Thanks to everyone who has been posting their suggestions and questions thus far. I am impressed about the helpfulness the forum community offers, thank you!

As Speed Dating Co-Head this year, I would like to address the concerns about waiting for the Speed Dating event and the LGBT sessions. I also strongly encourage for Fanime fans to post freely here about their suggestions and comments! However unless you are getting an answer from a Speed Dating Co-Head (me or yaki-ika), it is NOT an official statement or representation from Speed Dating department. So please keep that in mind. Also if your concerns are personal or private, we are able by email as well [email protected]; email correspondence is moreso reserved for serious inquiries and concerns and we appreciate your awareness of that.

This year to accommodate more people, we are having more rounds- in total 7 (with 2 for LGBT). We can only take in a certain amount of people, BUT I would still strongly recommend waiting in line regardless! Why you ask?

  • We propose to come at least 10 minutes before, but it is probable that there are people who will come before 10 minutes and hence before you.
  • Not everyone will have read the requirements thoroughly and thus not eligible for the events (need to be 18+YO with proper photo ID)
  • Not everyone will participate although they waited due to friends not getting in or last minute changes
  • Lastly, we have a new surprise for our fans this year that will reward some of the fans waiting in line but just didn't quite make the cut to participate in that one session. Nothing further will be said about this from me for now, so any inquiries, pleas, bribery, etc. will be futile.
As for the LGBT, thank you everyone for your insight and suggestions. As mentioned before, we did have a small pool last year so to simplify the sessions, we did our best at the time. We are well-aware of the variety challenges that impose on us to be all inclusive. Although fans do not see our background work, we try to have plans to accommodate everyone but during the con, things may not always work out. We ask for your patience and understanding as the LGBT sessions take flight and hopefully, we can work out the best system to accommodate everyone's needs. We are proud to say that we are of the very few cons offering Speed Dating, let alone LGBT Speed Dating :) Lastly to address, individuals may choose to participate in any of the heterosexual or LGBT sessions. We do not restrict anyone from participating regardless of their preferences. HOWEVER, we are very strict on emphasizing that Speed Dating is for 18YO+ SINGLES. We strongly discourage couples or fans wanting to make friends ("Speed Friending") to participate. There are other appropriate events for fans to participate in to make friends, like other con events. Will it happen in the future? Perhaps with enough interest and support from the fan community. However, Speed Dating will like to take our time and perfect our current services before jumping into other projects and diluting the quality of our events.
