We have "what's you favorite anime?" topic. I was wondering what was the first anime you ever saw?
Also, a similar thread, what is the anime that turned you into a full blooded otaku?
The first anime I ever watched when I was a young kid was Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman). Robotech was what got my hooked on anime though.
me: Astro Boy and Mazinger Z
Anime that turned me into a full otaku: Akira ^_^
My first, and possibly still favorite, is Project A-Ko. I saw it first when I was really little and Sci-Fi channel used to have the anime marathons. I didn't even know what anime was back then.
Somewhere between Samurai Pizza cats and Sailor Moon was when I really started liking anime.
My first anime was dbz.I used to watch that show all the time when I was like 5 I belive.I was so interested into the show that later when I 10 I started watching other anime. To tell you the truth I didnt even know what anime is when I was 5.And thanks to my addiction to games also lead to more anime.
The first anime I saw, if memory serves me well, was Voltron! Yeah, that show was awesome.
And I'd be lying if I didn't say that it wasn't until Dragonball Z that I started to become an otaku. That, or Evangelion.
Mine were....
Series:
Kiteretsu Daihyakka
Doraemon
Sazae-san
Anpan-man
Movie:
Nausicca -Valley of the Winds-
Laputa -Castle in the Sky-
Then manga:
Candy Candy
-This is what you get when you grow up in Japan XD
The first anime I ever saw was Bubble Gum Crisis over at my friends house in the early 90's.
sailormoon, it was on right after school and was interesting compared to other crap on t.v. even if it is a dub, i was only 10 =P lol
Movie: Akira
Series: RoboTech, Speed Racer, and Voltron.
Whoa.. Im old school! =^-^=
Don't worry Drallcome, you're not the only old school person. My first series was Robotech, during the Southern Cross season (ie Zor and the Masters). Shortly afterwards, I saw something called Teknoman (Tekkaman in Japan), but the series was cancelled half way through. That was my gateway into anime. Following these two series, I went on to Evangelion, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, ect...
First Anime: "Voltron", "Robotech"
Otaku Catalyst: "Sailor Moon", "Project A-Ko"
Yeah growing up with old school anime on TV was great. I loved Voltron. Then I remember when we started passing around copies of anime on VHS. Some of it wasn't even subtitled! It was so counter culture/underground. hehehe
Thank god for DVDs! The first DVDs i bought were Cowboy Bebop and Tenchi Muyo!
When I was little I used to watch Urusei Yatsura on PBS all the time. There were others that I really like before that one but I don't remember what they're called or what they're even about.
first anime: i think it was legend of the overfiend...i'm not sure it had teeth and tenticles and i was drunk or on something so i didnt like anime for a while after that
but then ah outlaw star i thought that was neat
but then my next boyfriend made me watch ninja scroll that was better
and then i had a boyfriend who made me watch trigun
ooh trigun
and then.....*continues to yammer on about her otaku history*
and now i'm trying to learn japanese and hooked on dn angel
*takes a breath*
The first one was when I was 3 years old. Battle of the Planets aka Gatchaman (sic?) It was on between Space Giants and the Monkees.
I was once told this was actually an anime so..Uhm.. Inspector Gadget... 8) THough it probably isn't, and I'm just seriously gullible.
Then Thundercats..
Then I fell in wub with Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Ah! Megami-sama, MKRE, so on and so forth.
Is Thunder Cats an anime?
Quote from: "VictimX"Is Thunder Cats an anime?
Hush! No, I dun think so.. but it looks like it. <.<; I'm trying to sound all hard core by sayin' old cartoons.
Well.. all cartoons are anime. BUT.. then there is (ANIME). If you look up what anime is its just cartoon.. Just us Americans call Japanese cartoons Anime. Uh.. did that make any sence to anyone?
Made sense to me oh wise one.
well technically speaking my childhood memories ar overloaded with speed racer... now i cant stand it
My firts anime was
i know this is going to be stuped but its was......
Pokemon
when it first got started here
before kids wb baught the us rights for it
when i was buying pokemon cards in a comic store i say a shelfe
with anime vhs tapes for rent
I have to thank my anime begings to a little yellow rodent
"may the anime be with you"

lol little yellow rodent and its series that just wont die :P
There's nothing wrong with WB gettin' Pokemon.. I would watch that EVERY SUNDAY. It was a routine. And then I got my first job.. and no doubt, at 10am during the rush hour, I would fill waters for the customers and sing.. "i'm gonna be the very best.. the best there ever was.. To catch them is my real test.. to train them is my cause.. POKEMON!"
Thankfully, I worked as a hostess in a hometown resteraunt where the owners were very good friends of my family. ^^; They didn't mind one bit.
I'm part of the Pokemon generation... However, Sailor Moon was the thing that actually got me pulled into anime's lair in the first place... a friend of mine had a binder with a picture of Super Sailor Moon manga style and I couldn't keep my eyes off it. :D
I think it was WB who use to show Card Captors? I used to watch that, aside from that I did watch Sailor Moon and DBZ on a regular bases. Then I kinda stoped watching t.v. now mostly videos/dvd or out on the town.
i never had channels on tv until around....5th-6th grade. and i never had cartoon network until 8th grade =(. thus, the first anime i saw was sailor moon right after school., then dbz, then gundam wing. i've seen others after, but gundam wing was my ultimate obsession.
Pokemon was first show on channel 31's afternoon shows then they keep show the same 15 or so episodes over and over
Then the wb bought it
And ya wb used to show cardcapters
but they didn't start it at the beging of the serious
Takin it back the first anime I ever saw was speed racer, way back when they used to have it like at 2am on TNT before popeye but after merry melodies. Then sailor moon came around and I was like "So your telling me this pimp in a tuxedo goes around pimping evil with five magical hoes? hell yeah, serve me up some more of this anime sheezee" and then it came to be......
Hooha!
Robotech, Salior Moon, Project A-ko and the first four episodes of Dragon Ball Z oh oh oh oh and Ronin Warriors too! RIO OF WILDFIRE! Hah those were the days.
*Tch* Anubis owned all!
I don't remember much of it but my first Anime was Transformers(TOS)
Quote from: "recomet15"*Tch* Anubis owned all!
Man I totally forgot about the man himself! Hah Rio was the only one I could remember lol.
My first anime was Unico. I still like watching it. =^_^=
Well let's see- I guess it depends. My intro to Japanese culture started when my grandpa bought me a Game Boy when I was 5ish, with Tetris and later Mario. At about age 8, I saved up $20 in change and bought a Nintendo (first games: Dragon Warrior, Shadowbane, Mario 3). So I was hooked right there. A couple years later I got a Genesis and became really interested in Sonic- I started reading the comics (some of which might qualify as manga? I dunno) and watching the tv show. I also used to go next door to my best friend's house and we would sit around and read the comics and draw our own Sonic Comics.
As for pure anime, my first was probably the original Dragonball (not DBZ). I also watched some Sailor Moon but I was never really hooked on it. I can proudly say I was never a fan of DBZ! I guess when I was 11 Pokemon for gameboy came out and I got hooked on that (I caught 'em all, including Mew! :D) and then started watching the tv show. And the first manga I ever bought was Ranma 1/2.
And now I'll end my 'essay' ¬_¬ heheh
Some of my first animes were The Sea Prince and the Fire Child, Unico, Sailormoon, Dragon Ball Z and Ranma 1/2. There was a local cable channel that I used to watch that played Evangelion, Key the Metal Idol, Lum and Please Save the Earth <-- title was something like that:? I'm not sure it's been a couple of years since I watched that channel.
its "Please save my Earth". Got it on VHS
Mine were Sailormoon, Pokemon, and Cardcaptors... (GAH i hated how they botched card captor sakura)
My first anime was Transor Z :P oh man funny dubbing, that was when i was a child. Wait i still am a child... it was at least 10 years ago though
yo my first anime to was dbz and db and yu yu hakusho it maded me in to a fulll blooded otaku! :P :D
That's the best way to start off! Rock on!
thank u! :D :P :o
Awesome avatar, by the way.
ya welcume
My first anime had to have been the butchered Sailor Moon back in 1995, I think. Then at Fanime Con 98 I sat in a video room watching SM subtitled.
My first manga ever is D N Angel, which I just got this year :)
I never read D N Angel. Is it good?
My first anime would have to be Sailormoon (the horribly dubbed version) played on UPN 44. Also Please Save My Earth, when they played decent anime on KTEH.
My first watched anime is DBZ when it appeared on Toonami. It was pretty cool at the time. I got tired of it towards the end of the Majin Buu saga.
EDIT:Crap! I just remembered what my first anime really was. Ronan Warriors. I completely forgot about that.
Me: Six years old. 1989.
Anime: Hotaru no Haka, Grave Of the Fireflies. Fansubbed.
Yeah. My first and the hook were one and the same. I'd say that it quite literally changed my life.
first anime in states was prolly ah my goddess
but i remember having saint seiya and gundam coloring books when i was in taiwan
Sailor Moon. I've been into anime for almost eight years and if it wasn't for "Moon Prism Power", I might not have ever seen series like Ah, Megami-Sama, Yami no Matsuei and the list continues.
I was in the summer after my fifth grade...and while channel surfing, I came across a girl with long blonde hair and weird eyes. So I did a search online and got this weird stuff called "an-ee-mee". *laughs*
Heck yeah, Anubis rocks.
First manga was Inuyasha, and first subbed anime was Escaflowne.
My VERY first anime, though, was Sailormoon. I had just come from my last day of eighth grade and was despressed, so I turn on the tv and there's this blue-haired chick being attacked by a monster, then something glowed on her forehead, a cat started talking and I was hooked. Took me a week to find it again, though, because I didn't know what it was! Didn't even check the time it was on. In fact, I didn't even know Sailormoon was the main character. Yes, I was a very stupid little eighth grader...
Dot Hack is my favorite series. the first anime I saw I'm not sure because my friends brought all these series over. It was DBZ, Excel Saga, or Inu Yasha.
My vey FIRST was probably.... Pokemon or sailor moon. I was a HUGE pokemon fan along with digimon, but i remember sailro moon too. i never watched it, but hey my friend was obseessed!
InuYasha is my favorite though!
Ag, first anime was Sailormoon way back in 1995 when the only anime on TV was really was either SM or DBZ. I've branched out ALOT since then, but any art style is affected by it, I very much tend to draw very shoujo-ish type of art.
well, back in the days... there was alot of anime that 'accidentally' found itself on american tv... mixed with the other supposed american cartoons...
the typical like :
Speed Racer
Robotech
Transformers
Voltron
then thanks to PBS sci/anime night... there was a couple of others that leaked thru the cracks... like :
Urusei Yatsura
Please Save my Earth
Lain
Key: the Metal Idol
but the REAL anime that totally turned me into a rabid fanboy collecting ever Single volume til I was done...
it was ALL about some crazy boy turning into girl and his stupid and yet funny Dad that turns into a panda while being chased by a manly-uncute-cooking that can kill you girl- followed by a crazy amazon-cat-girl.... followed by a perverted old man - followed by a okonomi-yaki cook with a huge serving spatula - followed by....
well u get the jist right ?
and of course my collectiong has "slighty' grown since then...
yah, anime is more expensive than an addiction to crack...
maybe I should goto Anime's anonymous...
My first anime in the 80's was Voltron, Speed Racer, Transformers, Robotech, I don't know if it counts as anime but G.I. Joe, Thunder Cats, The G Force.
Quote from: "Mystic_Man"... There was a local cable channel that I used to watch that played Evangelion, Key the Metal Idol, Lum and Please Save the Earth <-- title was something like that:? I'm not sure it's been a couple of years since I watched that channel.
Ah, that would be KTEH, or in your area, KCAH. I am still very, very
impressed with them; they took the lead in broadcasting uncut, unedited
anime well before the demographics showed that it was the right direction
for a TV station to go. In some ways, I think they helped *prove* that there
was enough demand for anime for it to be worth procuring licenses and
showing it on broadcast TV. I volunteered during a pledge drive when
they were showing Dirty Pair Flash, and noted that they set the pledge
goals considerably higher during the anime block than they did for the
adjacent block--and they still met their pledge goal. ^_^ It's amusing
for me to find out that KTEH could broadcast Evangelion now, when in
Japan Yamaga-san said that due to increased restrictions, the original
station that showed Eva no longer would be allowed to air it, due to the
content.
KTEH was able to get broadcast licenses for series like PSME, Tenchi,
Key the Metal Idol, and Evangelion because at the time nobody thought
there would be a real audience for the shows; once they demonstrated
that there *was* an audience, and that audience was willing to put real
pledge money down when anime was being shown, the licensors woke
up and started to smell money. After being successful at obtaining
broadcast licenses for some of Takahashi's works (Ranma movies,
Urusei Yatsura) from Viz, KTEH found that when they went back to
license Inuyasha, Viz was no longer interested in working with them,
instead wanting to hold out for licensing deals with larger networks.
And now, the licensing costs for series have gone up with the increasing
popularity of anime to the point where the small independent stations
like KTEH can't afford them anymore. :( It's part and parcel of the process
of becoming a mainstream product, I know--but I still like to give kudos
to KTEH for helping prove that there was money to be made in showing
anime on TV. ^_^
But as far as my particular gateway series, that would have to be
Robotech back in high school... biking home quickly so I could get to
see each episode (I didn't know what the opening was for the first whole
season, as I couldn't make it home in time to see the opening--but for
the second season, they moved it half an hour later. :D ) At the time
I didn't even know it was "anime"--I just knew it was different from the
repetitious "Tom and Jerry" style of cartoons that took up the rest of the
timeslots.
a DBZ Movie in raw japanese...I couldn't understand it but I thought it was cool anyways.
Street Fighter: the Animated movie
Neon Genesis Eva
my 1st anime was Gundam Wing Mobile Suit and Sailor Moon
turned me into an otaku: DBZ
My first anime was Speed Racer. What made me actually hook on to anime was Key the Metal Idle or DiGi Charat or something. :?
The first anime series I saw was Ronin Warriors. I didn't even know what anime was then. lol
It all started with the moon. Well to be specific, it was Sailor Moon. It was all about fighting for love and justice..
Ya Sailior Moon was my first also.
I'm not sure which one I saw first but I know it was one of these:
- Sailor Moon
- Darkstalkers
- Devil Hunter Yohko (that one got me in trouble)
- Speed Racer
What got me hooked on to anime:
- Ranma 1/2
- Fushigi Yuugi
- Rayearth
First? Probably something like Voltron or the Transformers movie. The first one that I recognized as anime and got me into the medium though, was Dragonball. Not Z; the original.
DBZ and I think Voltron 5.. if that was an anime.. o_O *cannot remember* anyway-- its nto the animes that got me into anime [though I did like DBZ for a while.. ]
The anime that got me into anime was Kodocha and it shall forever be my #1 fave anime ever! xD
my first was Guyver o.o and I was 6 years old when i watched it o.o;; They were rented from Blockbuster XD now blockbuster doesn't have them anymore. T_T Guyver will always be my fave xD
Transformers.
But I didn't really know what anime was until Pokemon. =.P
Of course I had watched it before like with Samurai Pizza Cats and stuff but ya. Man, they should bring back SPC... "Who do you call when you want some pepperoni? Samurai Pizza Cats!" X.D
They also need to re-air Transformers. It's such a classic I can't believe it's not on Cartoon Network! And I mean the original series, of course. Beast Wars too... That was the only other TF series I liked. The new series have annoying kids in them. =.\ I remember there was a petition for the TF movie to be re-released in theaters in 2005 since that's the year the movie takes place. Wonder if it'll happen.
My first was My Friend Totoro. <3 it. ^_^ But as a series goes, my first was Pokemon, and no, I'm not afraid to say it. XD After that was Sailor Moon. I'm still a rabid fan of the manga, too. >)
Gawd...someone interviewed me on that. I hope it doesn't turn up in Animerica or something~! xD
P.S. See that $300 card in my dresser there from Pokemon? Yeah. That proves my addiction. <_<;
Quote from: "Ryu-Ness"Gawd...someone interviewed me on that. I hope it doesn't turn up in Animerica or something~! xD
I guess you should be happy the guys from Kwoon didn't use your interview. XD
Boooooyyyy!! This is a tricky one..... since my parents hooked me up wit Japanese kids program and anime when I was little. I think my first Anime Ive watched was Doraemon, SazaeSan, and DragonBall.
First thing I saw that could be considered anime was probably Starblazers or the Shogun Warriors. The first thing I saw not on standard TV was Bubble Gum Crisis (not 2040) and Macross Do You Remember Love?
On a related note my first sentai shows were Gorangers, Spectreman, Ultraman, Johnny Sokko, and Space Giants. Anyone else remember watching all this stuff on Captain Cosmic?
On TV, Starblazers. First anime purchase, Ranma 1/2 first season. Got the VHS tapes 33% off at a comic book store going out of business.
1st anime must be SAILOR MOON!! and still loving it! 8) doesn't matter if it's still dub. ^_^
hehe Sailor Moon  I used to watch it in the Philippines and I continued to in the US.. lol I have so many SM collectibles it's so funny
