How do you sign up to be a staff member?
Title: Re: Staffing For Fanimecon09
Post by: SOawesomeness on August 25, 2008, 04:26:27 PM
Very carefully. Jaykay...
To sign up, you can either attend a meeting a few months before the con (but too early, and some heads won't be prepared/will forget, probably) and talk to HR if you don't know what department you want to join, or talk to the head of whatever department you want to join... or send an e-mail to either department saying you want to join and they'll tell you if you need to attend meetings (some departments have different requirements) or extra meetings, etc...

Join Reg. You'll love it because I'm there. (:

I'm so up for Registration. (:< I'll be able to add to the snuggly family.

If your 18+ join SOS/Rovers.
If your under 18, join Reg.

If you don't want to do either, join Panel staff. Rena will love you.

I have to politely disagree with the whole don't sign up too early for staff. It's never too early to sign up for staff! Sure you may not be asked to do anything, but it's better to have someone ready and gearing to go than having to scramble for staff later.

Besides, it makes our job easier so that we can focus on the larger issues like putting on a great con!

well there's no clear info on signing up for staff....until THIS post =D

our staff site as well as other staff resources have yet to go online but you can contact our HR by e-mailing hrATfanimeDOTcom. Be sure to give your age so that they know what options you have open to you.

My best bet is that if you are EXTREMELY PICKY about what department you want to work for, it's recommended to sign up early because departments do start to get full as the deadline approaches. Sadly, not all departments have or need bottomless pits like Reg and SoS :[...

But that's just my 2 cents so yea.

(P.S. I'm a "maybe" on staffing/attending for now, but we'll see as it gets closer to con)

9/11 edit: Don't forget that some departments may have certain prerequisites, such as being 18+ for ConOps, Tech, Logistics, SoS, etc., previous drawing experience or writing experiences for certain Publications departments, and so forth. By signing up early, you wouldn't have to stress over those minor things. Generally, not much experience is needed for being on general staff(other than the ability to work in a group environment), but there are departments with restrictions.

(I swear, the fact that I did this on 9/11 is merely a coincidence and nothing more)

contact and talk to the department head. make yourself valuable to them so that they will add you to their staff and if they are outta room, they will make space for you.

But then what do I know....I'm just a division head....I only officially have a staff of 8......

Well, we had around 13,000 paid registered members last year. Including staff, guests, industry and panelists, we had around 14,000 people. We're expecting around 15,000-16,000 paid members this year. That means we need more staff!

So join us and make Fanime 2009 great!

If you're interested, or curious about staffing, then I've got news for you...

We'll be having a kick-off BBQ for staff and people interested in joining staff on the 28th! It'll be from noon to 4pm at the Ed Levin Park in Milpitas. Many of our division and department heads will be around to talk about what they do and how you can join! We'll be bringing the usual BBQ fare, and we're encouraging everyone to bring a little something extra, too.

I might go to the BBQ, but that depends on if my friend can make it (depending on if her psycho parents let her since it's the weekend before SATs). But her parents are psycho, so I probably can't.

:(

I'm a pro at spot-lighting (I never want to do it again, ever) and I have little skills here and there~ but I pretty much can't excel much in anything. My friend rocks at light board, she's almost better than the TD himself.

What company do you work for?

Tech for Fanime is nothing like stage work.......SJCC = union, you don't get to touch much.

I was getting paid to do theater in 2000.....I could tell the diff between new style and old style twist lock in the mid '90s.......dang I'm old...

Edit: And that's why u wanna join Reg:)

I am interested in staffing or volunteering (I was talking to Antonio Eco about doing so at Yaoicon).  I have a few health problems though, so I'm not sure if I would even be wanted for staffing.   Also with me being my cosplay group's booking person for the hotels and such, I'm not sure how rooming would work, as I'd like to be able so socialize with my friends, but I know I'd need to dedicate most of my time to the con.
Also, if I were to staff, and have a friend would like to staff, would we be able to work together, or would we be separated most of the time.
I'm a good go-fer,  if nothing else.

Being a plain volunteer would offer you more flexibility in hours, but less in duties. Staffing would allow you to choose your department, and therefore your duties (assuming the department head would take you), but be a bit less flexible in hours since staff are required to work a certain number of hours to fulfill their staff obligation.

Although discounted rooms are usually offered for staff, it isn't necessary for you to take advantage of that. If you'd prefer to stick with getting a hotel room with your cosplay group, that's certainly still an option.

As for working -with- your friend, it would depend upon where you were staffing and what the duties required of you. Some departments, such as registration, everyone pretty much works in close proximity to one another. Other departments, such as mine (panels), often require you to be on your own for a stretch while you're monitoring a door. (I actually try to pair my staffers up when I can, but this isn't always possible.)

I don't think there is any task we can set you, whether staff or volunteer, and guarantee that the two of you can stay together constantly, unless one of you were staff and the other were not... in which case the non-staffer might in some cases be free to hang about so long as they didn't distract you from your duties.

I can't say whether your health issues would be an issue without knowing what they are, so I won't comment on that. That'd probably be something you should discuss with the dept. head of whatever department you decide to apply to. ^^

You're much more likely to get invited to one of those departments if you approach them directly rather than making a random post on these forums which they may or may not see. ^^

[email protected] would be the way to contact the heads for graphics/web, I think... and marketing@fanime for press/marketing.

Thank you very much.  My health problems are my dysfunctional digestive system, knee problems and depression, so I can't run/stand long periods, need to sleep a lot from medications, and have to closely monitor what I eat along with stress... the stress being a big issue.  I wouldn't except to work with someone 24/7 but I would prefer to as it helps lower stress, therefore would make me more productive.  I wish there was a way to help only certain days, but I guess that would undermine the position as being "staff".  I'll probably just wait another year before trying to work.
However, I know one thing I could do is setup and breakdown of tables and such like in the dealer's room, though I wouldn't know who to even ask about that.  It's not much, but I'd feel better knowing I was helping, even if only a little.

It sounds like your best bet would be volunteering, at least for now. Volunteers aren't staff and don't have a set number of hours to work. They are eligible for various rewards based on how many hours they spend volunteering.

Just request a volunteer spot where you wouldn't be required to run around a lot. Volunteers are often the ones checking badges at the dealer room door - I use volunteers to check badges at panel room doors too, for busy times, or when I'm low on staff.

Volunteering would allow you to work only when you wanted to work, and specify the days and times you'd be available. (Assuming volunteers were needed at those times.)

You wouldn't get much in the way of 'rewards' if you didn't work very many hours, but it'd be a way you could help and be in control of everything so that it wouldn't overwhelm you.

You mention helping set-up and take-down on dealers tables - are you planning to arrive at the con site on Thursday and stay through Monday late afternoon?

Reg may be good too. The hours are predictable and with the number of staff reg has we are flexible. Also, reg is not open 24 hrs.

Volunteering sounds best, and I was planning on being there Thursday midday, but it depends on how late we (my group) stay Monday.  If I could leave between 5-6 I should be fine (I live in San Leandro, so it's not a long commute)

honestly there is not much to do for dealers setup and take down. its all the dealers and union people. Mostly the staff is there to make sure everything stays in order and no bad things are happening...it might be something that works

I think she meant 16+ for general staff, not Rovers Specifically.

So it's 16 for general staff like printing?

For me, I can see the general age being around 15+. I've had friends who were 15 by con day and didn't have problems finding a department to work under. In general, I think the older you are, the more likely you are to find a department(there are a couple that are 16+, a good amount that are 18+, etc.).

I don't know what the printing dept's age requirement is, you're better off e-mailing them for that(print-at-fanimeDOTcom).

Either way, you and your parent/guardian get that beautiful piece of paper to sign. *remembers those*  ::)

Hey there. My name is Jon, and I just moved to the San Jose area. I've been a staffer at Otakon in Baltimore Maryland for 8 years now, and looking for another convention to work for a little closer to home now that I've moved. For Otakon I do photography. Both con coverage and photo-suite photography. Is Fanimecon in need of anyone else to help in these areas for the 2009 convention? Do you guys have a photosuite at all? Do you guys do con coverage at all?

We have a photography department.

It is run by a guy named Derek.

I do believe his email is Derek AT Fanime.com

I think he is looking for a few photographers. You will probably need samples of your work etc.

Sorry if this has already been asked but, is it just volunteering that needs a permission form for minors or is it also staffing?
