Despite the difficulties that arose with the unexpected large turnout, 2013's Marvel/DC Gathering managed to turn out pretty well and might be setting up for a big showing for 2014. I'm proud to announce that the gathering will be back for 2014, so for those of you that are a little new to this, any incarnation of Marvel or DC character, be it based on their appearance from the comics/video games/TV shows/movies are all welcome here. Hope to see all those from 2013 return and welcome all newcomers for 2014.
Taking some things from 2013 into perspective, with how much the gathering has grown since the inception back in 2011, there is a need for a kind volunteer or two to help assist me with running the gathering. Also, there is some consideration of moving the gathering time (maybe 2pm? maybe earlier?) and location change as well (don't know the new specs/layout of the convention center redesign yet, so a tentative choice might be the park area that the Homestuck gathering used due to size).
Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

Time: 2pm (moved the start time back to allow people to grab lunch and make it in time if they get stuck in a line)

INITIAL UPDATE (7/15/13): Recycling the topic for the 2014 gathering. Cleared the information to present a clean slate sort to speak and should be good to go to get things rolling for next year's gathering. Added a little more info to give a bit of an idea of what new things for 2014 (gathering assistants, new location, maybe new time?)

I am excited to see this, as a friend and I are both planning to cosplay as x-men characters and thought it would be fun to get a group going. Even though fanime is mostly for anime, I think comics are also appropriate! I am going as Snowbird, and my friend Liz is going as Marvel girl. We are also going in these costumes to Wondercon. This should be fun!
Yeah I understand that Fanime is usually anime/manga/video game related, but it shouldn't keep people from cosplaying as characters from other sources, like western comics or tv shows (we've seen our share of Star Wars cosplayers every year for example) so this comic gathering fits perfectly fine. I'll go ahead and add you + your friend to the list. Also cool that you guys are heading to Wondercon in the same costumes, hopefully you can spread the word to those attending Wondercon that if they are interested at cosplaying at Fanime that this gathering is available as well.

The day and time I am thinking about choosing I felt could work best since it seems like it would be a little out of the way from any other big/important gatherings and hopefully any other events.
I'm actually planning on going as TWO DC characters this Fanime (way to kick it to the "anime" part of Fanime XP)
I don't know which I will be going as on the day of the gathering, but it will be either Slade from Teen Titans, or the Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes version) from Batman: Brave and the Bold. It'll all depend on if I even go to the gathering, since I also plan on having an artist alley booth XD If I had to pick one for the gathering, though, it will probably be Blue Beetle.

Oh, I do have a bit of a question for those attending the gathering. I received a PM last week from someone looking to join the gathering asking about a series that had a comic released by Marvel (G.I. Joe) and I would like your thoughts of whether it is ok or not to allow the representation (it was a good question that had me pretty stumped to figure out). Personally, I would be fine with having them join (not just to avoid being rude, but as a nice little interesting thing), but I would like to know what some of you think of it before making a final decision.

Also, I'll probably be the White Lantern version of Maxwell Lord if I can make it, but if I can't get a new patch attached to the shirt in time, I'll be Wade Wilson from the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. Pre-Barakapool, that is.

One thing that I forgot to ask when I was updating the list earlier, are people ok with the gathering time taking place at 5pm (was trying to aim for something that wouldn't conflict too much with any other gathering)? I want to make sure of this before I send out a request and get everything finalized for the Gatherings and Events List topic.

Saturday is generally a bad idea due to some big/popular gatherings going on that day (Naruto/Bleach [these interchange every year or so] for example) and also due to Masquerade taking place the same day.
Ok, change of plan regarding time. Looks like Wonderland gathering snatched up the 5pm time slot for Sunday, so I'm now looking towards a half hour later (5:30pm) on the same day.

Its not much of a suspense thing to be quite honest. I kept it as question marks due to not wanting to ick some people out since those that haven't seen me before don't know that I also do crossplays, so I just want to be sure that people that don't know about me/met me/have talked with me/etc. were not going to be all disgusted and decide to cancel out of the gathering.

Nearly the same costume, minus the corset but with a white dress shirt/blouse instead, undecided on shoes at the moment, may change with a few tweaks here and there.

Been working on mine since the end of Yaoi-con. Got a jacket online via ebay, got the shirt/blouse (need to alter it a bit to shorten the length of the torso), been testing out different leotards/swimsuits to see which I like best (looking to order two this week from a site), need to find a top hat (could be tricky), tie (dunno whether to go black or white on the tie yet), will probably buy newer gloves, haven't started with shoes yet, unsure yet about getting fishnets (but will be wearing flesh colored tights that I bought from American Apparel that I love and use for crossplays).

Ok I just caught something that is a bit of a critical situation for me. I have noticed that Masquerade is going to be on Sunday this year and this may have created a stumbling block. When I initially created the gathering topic I went for the one weekend day that wouldn't conflict with Masq (which going by the previous years would be to aim for Sunday), but I just found out about the new day (I didn't check the forum last week) so it kind of leaves me a little worried. Should I keep the gathering for this day or should I go ahead and place this on Saturday instead (same time since it's still open)?
I'd like to get word from everyone that has commented here so far in the topic so I can get word as soon as possible and not end up being too late on any day changes.
Hm that does sound like a problem. Well if all else fails, just make it for Saturday. I think my dc crew can make it either way

ispyangie: It would still be in the afternoon (no time change I believe). I just wanted to get a gauge of views/thoughts everyone here had regarding the days. I don't mind keeping the gathering day as is, but if there are those that would want it changed, then that is ok too.
So for right now, the gathering is still taking place for Sunday. If there is significant concern from people here about the gathering taking place close to Masquerade, then I will go ahead and look to change the day.
I never go to the masquerade but since a lot of people do go, it might be a better idea to change the gathering to Saturday. Either day is fine with me!
@bahamutknightzero: In my opinion. Saturday would be a wiser choice. I'd rather have this gathering cross with other gatherings on Saturday instead of Sunday while the Masquerade is going on. Since a lot of people go to that instead of overall gatherings.. It would be nicer, more people would see the gathering opposed to Sunday due to the Masquerade. So Saturday seems better to me. :-\
@The Crypt: Lol And you're really gonna skip a comic gathering for Kingdom Hearts? That's fine too, but it'd be kickass to get this gathering pretty large IMO. :P

Regarding the change, I have to wait to make the request since there are three 60+ member gatherings that have first dibs on picking days and due to the Masq day switch, they have to decide if they are sticking with their original days or not first before every other gathering can request any changes.

Just as excited for both Fanime and this gathering. Nearly have the costume complete (just need to try it all together to see if everything goes well or if I need to make any changes). I would just like to make it official (it's listed as undecided still) that I will be coming to the gathering as the Blue Beetle III (Jaime Reyes)! I'll be going as Slade (from Teen Titans) at some point during Fanime, but I will definitely be here at the gathering as BB. :D

Im thinking about going as Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) or Luffy but most likely it will be Green Lantern. Since the gathering is on saturday would it be ok if I go as Green Lantern Saturday and Luffy the other days?

Just wanted to update that I have the photos I took from Fanime (including this gathering) on my Facebook page so far (however only friends are able to see it). However, I will soon have the photos up on my Photobucket page as well.
As for Sac-Anime, I actually won't be there. I don't know my con/costume plans other than showing up at Yaoi-con (close to where I live and usually go to get the jump on Fanime early/pre reg).
The last additional thing is that I'm already looking into having this gathering return for 2012.

Decided on pre-reboot Red Robin!
Updated the gathering list along with placing two possible day ideas (it'll be either Saturday or Sunday for sure), just kind of waiting to get more info on big events like Masquerade, the Concert, the dances to get a good day gauge.
Chances are that since the gathering was on a Saturday last year that it will take place on Saturday this year, may try to set the gathering up at an earlier time since last year I wasn't sure how big the gathering was going to be in all.
So before I forget since the submission requests for gathering times starts on Jan 30th, all are open to voice on day, time, location details for any possible ideas

Hey all, just wanted to give an update with the time scenario, I'm still scoping around time since there are a few things I wanted to take into consideration, namely the gatherings that usually get alot of gathering participants (Naruto, Bleach, for example) and hopefully want to avoid getting a conflict created. I can consider setting up a gathering for the early afternoon (to avoid the cloudy/rain situation that came up towards the end of the gathering in 2011) but I can't guarantee getting the time for sure if a larger gathering snatches it before us. So I'll do my best to aim for an early afternoon time slot (I'll venture maybe towards a time between 1pm and 3pm).
Hopefully we can still get some feedback going before Jan. 31 when gathering time slots open up

Agreed, a later time gives us more people to photograph the gathering since more attendees will come out at later times in the afternoon. 3PM on a Saturday was a perfect timing and location last year.

As of last Saturday I decided to bring my Lady Loki cosplay to con, but because of a conflicting shoot time (Super Sentai/Kamen Rider shoot at 3) I don't know if I'll be able to attend the gathering. Loki takes an inordinate amount of time to put on/take off so I imagine I would have to cut out early in order to make it to the second one. I've got plenty of time to decide how I'm going to do this, though. Hope to see you all there!

This one might be a grey area to figure out. I was asked two years ago a similar question involving GI Joe characters (since the comic was once published by I believe Marvel) and even though I was okay allowing them to participate, they did change their minds and just took photos. I would try to bring this up with other gathering participants to get a good idea on situations like this.

For what it's worth, I'm going as Dr. Nemesis, and I don't think we have an Arcade yet, so if you want a variety, I'd say Arcade. That said, Dr. Nemesis is a great character, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with double doctors.

Hello all, I wanted to address two things:
1) First I would like to apologize with all of the constant moving of the gathering spots. When I was tracking the list through this topic to gauge the number of potential gathering participants, I was sure that the numbers would be able to work with the best possible location chosen to go with under the rather limited spaces due to the construction. Using the turnout from this year's gathering, there is a strong feeling that next year's gathering is going to have some kind of choice priority that the other large sized gatherings have. I have certainly considered using the park location for next year (the one in the middle area close to the tech museum and the Fairmont) just based on the feeling that the old location for the last two gatherings (in front of the main entrance) might've been a bit small to fit all the people we had this year without causing part of the entrance to be blocked.
2) In lieu of all of the difficulties that did come about from the unexpected moments, I personally do hope that these things didn't ruin people's experience of this gathering. The prior two years we're steps in the right direction, this year was a bit of a challenge with the cards that we were offered sort to speak, but stuff like that shouldn't take away from all of the positives that have come about from the fun that the cosplayers were having in the photo groupings. This year has certainly been a learning experience for what could be in store for 2014 and certainly would love to keep this gathering as being one of the most enjoyable gatherings for both the cosplayers and the photographers.
With all of that taken care of, photos of the gathering should be appearing all over the place and more pics will be up too. So for everyone that has taken the time to read this kind of long post; Thank you everyone for helping make this gathering a reality ^_^. Keep an eye out for the topic update in preparation for Marvel/DC Universe Gathering 2014

I really appreciate the apology and I'm glad you addressed it because honestly, my friends and I got fed up and left. I really wanted to stay but I had other obligations and I ended up completely missing them because I was clinging to the hope that this gathering would get itself together in time for me to do both. I was really upset by the way everything was handled and I personally disliked all of the shouting and shenanigans being pulled by our "famous cosplay guest". I loved everyone's costumes and the participants that I actually got to meet were all wonderful and I hope to see you again and have time to meet more of you next time! I know this year was rough and such, but it was an absolute mess and I hope we can do better with it next year. I hope we do get priority and I think moving to the park would be an excellent idea! The Homestucks do all their stuff there and it seems to work out pretty well for them. If you need help running it next year, I'd be more than willing to do my best to assist with whatever needs to be done.

I really appreciate the apology and I'm glad you addressed it because honestly, my friends and I got fed up and left. I really wanted to stay but I had other obligations and I ended up completely missing them because I was clinging to the hope that this gathering would get itself together in time for me to do both. I was really upset by the way everything was handled and I personally disliked all of the shouting and shenanigans being pulled by our "famous cosplay guest". I loved everyone's costumes and the participants that I actually got to meet were all wonderful and I hope to see you again and have time to meet more of you next time! Recycling the topic for the 2014 gathering. Cleared the information to present a clean slate sort to speak and should be good to go to get things rolling for next year's gathering. Added a little more info to give a bit of an idea of what new things for 2014 (gathering assistants, new location, maybe new time?)
It's a bit early for me to be 100% committed just yet, but I'm most likely going to be there next year as New Mutants-era Boom-Boom. My boyfriend *may* be coming as Blue Beetle (Ted Kord, specifically), but yet again, not 100% sure just yet.
I understand that it is early and all but it is nice to get a jump on things early before you end up working on a costume on a short amount of time.
What I meant is that neither myself or my boyfriend have decided if we're actually going to go to Fanime next year. x3 Since there's so many other cons we haven't been to yet, we're thinking we might just go for a day. Like I said, it's a little early for either of us to be 100% certain.
Boom-Boom is, technically-speaking, about 50-60% done already.
Depending on my other obligations imma try and attend for 2014! Most likely as Tony Stark (avengers movie status) or Blue Beetle (young justice/jaime reyes) though the latter is more unlikely since my Impulse will not be attending the con.
Sure it is October but can't help but feeling a little early excitement ^_^
Bit of a new year bump
With all of the stuff going on between the end of Fanime 2013 and the start of Fanime 2014, the gathering is going to be crazy fun

Hey everyone,
Wanted to go ahead and open up some discussion on potential times for the gathering this year. The only set thing is that the gathering will be on a Saturday, the time is something that I'm considering changing for this after what happened last year. There are a few options that I was considering:
1: a later time (probably 2pm), this will allow people to grab lunch and be able to make it back.
2: an earlier time (it would have to be 10 or 11AM due to Final Fantasy already claiming Noon), this would be tricky since it would be rather early
3: keep the old time (1pm), placing this on the table for those that were okay with the 1pm time
Aiming to get some kind of concise answer by the time the gathering slots open up (thankfully we can get a little priority this year with the number of gathering attendee expected to be huge, nearly triple digits)
The girlfriend and I will be returning as Red Robin and Superboy again! I'm cosplaying Tim's Unternet suit and Gravitiger (my gf) will be in the S shirt and jeans outfit.
After lunch time would be my vote.
Schedule permitting, I'll be attending as Wolverine, original comic version and my vote is for 1pm which was last year's time. I'm sure it will be another great gathering!
I might be attending as either Impulse or Robin from Young Justice! I'm not sure if i'm fully committed to be Impulse but I'm pretty sure i'm going to be Robin. Although, I really do hope I can make it! See you all there! ^^

So I have a suggestion for 2015. The DC/Marvel gathering has grown too big. Let's face it, it didn't even fit comfortably in the largest gathering spot. Cosplayers were being elbowed, it was too hot in the area, people couldn't hear, and it was just too chaotic. A slew of attendees gave up and left, and a gathering people used to enjoy turned into something that wasn't fun at all. One of my friends had a bad panic attack and almost passed out even.
I propose that the gathering get separated into two gatherings; one for DC and one for Marvel. It would be even better if they could possibly be on two different days. I have talked to multiple people who have expressed the desire to cosplay from both DC and Marvel at gatherings but, for obviously reasons, can't. Having run gatherings before, I am more than willing to take over one gathering or the other if needed.

May I suggest a rotating cycle of controls *eg: you take DC and I take Marvel on one year, the following year we switch sides, repeat*

Yes, let's move it to the park, where the Attack on Titan shoot was held. That gathering was even bigger - I know, I was sent there mistakenly and almost missed the DC / Marvel gathering. Grr.

Eliteslayer, pinknekophiliac and Zephyr40k: My camera only caught some of the pics from the gathering, but I know someone that did take alot of photos. Once I refind the person, I'll link his gallery. I can also share the Fanime photographers link that was listed on the cards provided to us after the gathering
Eliteslayer: The park is looking more and more to be an option, although would the space be too big if we do go with the split? The secondary location I am looking at is that pit area (took notice of this when taking pictures of the Kill la Kill gathering which was just as big). The key thing with these two spots would be that these choices are providing that we don't do a split.....
OR...
We make three gatherings (one for Marvel, one for DC, and one for both). That way all parties can feel represented in some sort of way (and still keep those cross company showdowns). Let me know what all of ya think of these ideas
You could always do separate gatherings a half-hour before, then combine them on the hour.
I'm down for the three gathering idea. That way DC and Marvel peeps can have their smaller, separate gatherings and the third could just be an ALL comics gathering; including Dark Horse, smaller companies, and indie comics :)

I really tried viewing that forum but it appears the first 6000 photos in the category are of some stage gathering inside the convention hall and then my internet connection melted down and my computer exploded.
Anyone else manage to actually get to the DC/Marvel gathering photos via that link?
Although I love having it as Marvel vs. DC, I think a split might be what we need. We could at least try it for one year and then see how it goes? Or like others suggested, do 3 gatherings.
btw, I was the Stephanie Brown batgirl! I had a lot of fun at the gathering but ultimately I did give up and left because it was just so crowded and hot, I thought I was going to pass out.
