Video Programming / Re: Video Programming feedback 2015
« on: June 03, 2015, 12:31:50 AM »
I've been wondering.... has the number of video rooms actually shrunk in number? I seem to remember a year when there were more rooms?

I think it would be nice to have a couple more rooms. Two live action rooms would be nice. One for movies and another for Jdrama series. I felt the Asian film room was showing more tv shows than actual films... or at least it seemed that way. I personally like stopping by for something that doesn't require me to watch episodes "1-x" and actually has an end. (I liked the anime film room...)

It would be nice to have a couple more anime rooms too... I think one that shows examples of various genres would be nice. And one that shows various anime shorts (those series that are like 7min. each episode...) would be nice for those that want to stop by to kill time before something else.

I'm not sure I like the idea of the rooms becoming so industry... It feels like we're bought to some extent. But what can we do....?

Hotel and Facilities / Re: Disabled Access for convention

@trickstersgambit:
I applaud you guys coming out to con. And I'm sorry for the intolerance you dealt with.

I also noticed that the over-crowding was really hard on disabled attendees. Especially at Swap Meet. I don't know how many times I turned around and almost ran into someone in a wheelchair or had to stop someone from doing the same. And I agree that the panels are a little too far away.

I'm not entirely certain that all the rooms aren't being used; I think some may just not be open to non-staff or are being used by non-convention related stuff? However if they are empty, I think the con should use that space.

I hope that they can figure something out for you peeps and that you'll have a better time next year.

Apparently, they are trying something different this year and not doing the normal form. Instead they have a thread here:

Doesn't seem overly creepy of a conversation... Perhaps just an overzealous fan or past staff. It could have always been someone on Staff but not a Rover. Sounds almost like they were heading someplace themselves.... but I still wonder about the chasing you down part.

About the water...You do know California is facing a severe drought right?
Fanime may have an obligation to provide free water. See Food and Agricultural Code (Concert and Music Festival Safety Act) sec. 11000.10. That law is aimed at big raves and music festivals, and applies to any event with over 10,000 people on state property.

Missing the point...Any public meeting center has to provide potable water by building code!  But yea the complaint about the water flow rate is what I was referring to...really who cares if it takes you 2x as long to fill your bottle, if we can reduce water demand and the sink...remember not everyone is as savvy as you about not wasting water, A high GPM flow rate can lead to more water wasted by more people.
What I was referring to was turned off fountains and water so low that you couldn't refill a bottle or drink out of the fountain. So those fountains were essentially not usable. It wasn't a complaint but more asking what was going on.
To my knowledge, SJ hasn't started water restrictions? But I wasn't sure if it was different for businesses. I thought maybe they reached their rationed amount or something.

I said nothing about water flow. I was talking about fountains (which were usable at the beginning of con) that were not usable later.

I am quite aware of the drought. I live someplace that has high fire danger because of the drought. But dehydration isn't the answer. At large crowded events, you need to drink lots of water. Just because I'm asking doesn't mean that I don't cut back as much as I can.

Now that I remember, I think the con center frequently cuts off water to infrequent areas of the con. But the Marriott also was having problems.

The only thing I can say on this matter, not to take away from you guys on this, but we had a water cooler in Cosplay hangout that we made sure was always full. and on a personal note, I had low pressure at my dorm room at SJSU, so it may be the block, although I doubt it.
Hmm... perhaps it was a city wide thing. It may just not be as easily noticeable outside large events.

Well on this note, I'm happy to just let this issue drop. I wouldn't have asked if I knew I'd get flamed for asking about the water situation.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Guests I Want for Fanimecon 2016!
« on: June 01, 2015, 10:19:49 PM »
I'm just going to copy my list from 2015 for now...

I'd really like to see (Japanese) mangakas and seiyuu. It seems the last few years didn't have much. Manhwa authors/artists would be awesome too. We never see those. Perhaps even japanese game creators/artists/story writers/seiyuu? It would be also cool to get someone from a Jdrama, etc.

I'll just list some of the more mainstream ones I like. (And ones I know are current.)

Music guests:
Kalafina
Aoi Eir
Aimer
Elisa
Suara
Superfly
ClariS
Kanon Wakeshima
BoA

Mangaka artists/authors:
Kakinouchi Narumi (Vampire Princess Miyu, etc.)
NAKAMURA Yoshiki (Skip Beat, etc.)
MASHIMA Hiro (Fairy Tail, Rave, etc.)
IKUHARA Kunihiko (Mawaru Penguindrum, Utena, Yuri Kuma Arashi)
Kinoshita, Sakura (Matantei Loki Ragnarok)
Clamp
Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon) & Yoshihiro Togashi (Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter) [obviously they'd most likely have to be a pair]
Yana Toboso (Kuroshitsuji)
RHIM Ju-Yeon (manhwa - Ciel, Last Autumn Story)

Japanese Novelists:
NARITA Ryougo (Durarara!!)

Seiyuu:
Miyuki SAWASHIRO
Sayaka OHARA
Tetsuya
Tomokazu SEKI

Anime character designers:
Maho Yoshikawa (Amnesia, Fairy Tail, etc.)

Game companies/people:
Maybe someone from Idea factory, Key, or from the "Tales of" game staff?

General Convention Discussion / Re: Official Convention Feedback
« on: June 01, 2015, 09:58:29 PM »
Overall I applaud you staff and all the hard work you do. I've witnessed several years of it and am grateful for it.
As always... the Dealer's Hall, Artist Alley, Video Rooms, Gaming Hall, etc. does an excellent job.
I'll address some issues:

Guides:
  • Can you please not use black text on a dark gray background? It is really hard for those of us with vision problems and/or tired to see. Especially when it is also small text. Also makes it too easy to overlook guest panels (since those were the ones in that color.)
  • Please list all major events. Swap Meet wasn't listed for Thurs. And I don't think it was listed for Fri. either.

Accessibility to cosplay gathering areas
  • Finding the exit, to the cosplay gathering area next to the Hilton, was rather confusing and no signs were put up. The upstairs exits were supposedly alarmed and un-usable. The only exit I found was through the Hilton restaurant; which isn't ideal. I know you can't do anything about the existing structure of the building but signs would've been nice.

More Cosplay-related stuff
  • It would have been really nice if Peace-bonding and the Cosplay Hangout were closer together. Ideally, it would be awesome to have Peace-bonding, Cosplay Hangout, and Item check all in the same area. It would save time for those cosplayers that have to run all over the con (for peace-bonding, costume prop/fixes, item check, etc. )before a gathering...
  • Next time, can you make some note in the guide/program book that there is a second peace-bonding station?

Staff & Safety
  • I noticed this during Thurs. night (it may not be true for all of con.) but the Staff on Thurs. let con-goers to bang on the tent walls, for hours, until I said something. Which I said, after someone on the opposite side, had hit me on my head. This should have never got to this point. Perhaps the girl was new and/or understaffed but usually dangerous behavior is seen by staff & addressed faster.

Video Rooms
  • Personally, I'd like to see more variety of types of shows. I liked someone's idea of having a room that showed a few examples of each genre. I personally would love a room that showed Shoujo/series based off Dating Sim games...
  • It seems like the number of video rooms have actually decreased over the years? I would have sworn there was a year when video rooms took up a lot of the Marriott and the opposite side (where they are now)? More video rooms again would be nice.
  • Bring back more Jdrama rooms. The Asian film one is nice but I would love one that showed Jdrama series. I hardly get a chance to watch many anymore and it would be fun to watch some during con.

Artist Alley
  • That entrance.... It was really obscure and hard to find at first. Wouldn't one of the two exits, have made a better entrance? They ended up closing off one of the exits but for awhile it was "That's an exit.. that's also an exit. Where is the entrance? Eh????"
  • Although I think artist alley was good this year, it felt really crammed. (I think it was the shear number of attendees this year.)

Other
  • Panels: It would have been been nice if you could've gotten that hotel across the street again for panels. That was nice that one year. The Fairmont seems really far to go for panels; it makes it tempting to skip that area and stay within the main building.
  • Also panels: I would love more cosplay/lolita/prop panels. And not just guest ones. Specifically, more obscure/technical ones like molds.
  • Space issues: There were a gazillion of people this year. It is really too bad the con center doesn't have a true 3rd floor (or 4th) or was twice as big... I really wish there was something the con could do about this because it really didn't feel safe. I kept getting bumped with props/items or people bumping into the bruise on my arm. I kind of worry about those with more serious issues. It also seemed like some rooms were crowded while there were also several areas that seemed unused?
  • Water fountains: What was going on with the water fountains? Some of them were turned off halfway through the con. Or had barely any water. Did the con center reach its water limit or something?
  • Signs. This doesn't affect me but affects friends: There should be signs for the Lines for Parents with young children or more mention of the accommodations offered to them. I forgot about this since it didn't affect me & I think my friends were unaware of it: There should be more mention/signs for the New Mother's Room.
  • More stuff to do: If I'm being honest, I would prefer more stuff to do over stuff to buy. Sure, Dealer's Hall was awesome this year but I didn't quite realize how much it cut into Video Rooms. Unless you can magic a 3rd & 4th floor, I don't know if we need quite that large of a Dealer's Hall.

Guests
  • I still would like more Japanese guests. I would've attended more autograph sessions but I stupidly forgot my item to be signed 6+ hrs away... -.-; But I'd love more variety of Japanese guests. Though I admit the Chalk Twins were actually pretty cool in person.
  • More music guests. I would like to have two music guests again. I understand if you get someone huge but...

Dealer's Hall, Gaming Hall, Reg
  • You're good. Don't change anything.
  • On second thought, a couple more food venders inside if Dealer's Hall remains that huge? And I'm not talking pocky and mochi. (Though I still wish that Sesame Mochi was actually the Cookie Dough Mochi I thought I saw out of the corner of my eye...) Actually, a vender selling Ice Cream mochi would be awesome... or Green tea ice cream.

I think that might be it for now. Unless I think of something I missed.

Edit:
I forgot about this one because I don't really attend it anymore... so mine is based off of past years and what I hear. From what I've heard, it hasn't changed.

Cosplay Spectacular
  • I never particularly cared for how skits and certain walk-ons were mixed. I think the ones showing off their costumes & singing should be part of a separate event. I'm talking the individual ones (not the group ones.) I used to go for the skits and only the skits. I'm ok with singing if it is part of a skit but I don't think they should allow "I think I can sing so I wanna show off" individuals. Honestly, they should be taking part in karaoke not masquerade. Or maybe Stage Zero.
  • At least make the costume thing a separate event... it doesn't do well on such as large stage and I think would do better in more of a cat-walk/fashion show setting. Have these people sign up for a "Cosplay Fashion show" instead. Plus, it gives you another event at fanime.
  • Judging: I have no first hand experience with this but I've heard judging is rigged & biased. I think it should either be done by an independent party or an audience vote. We don't need to know the results right away; the fact that they already know who won just shortly after the show ends just screams "fake." We the audience aren't dumb and know the results aren't true.
  • You know what... make the results a separate thing. If it isn't a audience vote, make it into a panel or event where it is one of those over the top judging shows. Where the judges have to explain what is great or bad about a skit.

Thanks so much for posting the list. I wanted to look up some & watch the ones I missed; as well as find out info on music artists, etc.

@Nina Star 9: That is really weird, considering peace-bonding was in the Hilton this year. Not the Marriott. Why would a Rover not know that? Sure, there was a station by the main entrance but the main room was where you were heading. Makes me wonder if he was a creep trying to get you alone someplace. Or maybe just people on a power trip pretending to be Rovers?
That's...even weirder. I only knew of the station by the main entrance. How would he know that I'm not headed toward peacebonding already, then?

Reading over my story again, I didn't mention this, but he did gesture toward the Marriott side of the CC (back toward where I came from) like that's where he wanted me to go.

He was with a woman though, and it didn't seem like he was trying to get me alone, but I am officially creeped out now. I was seeing some red flags before but thought it was just strange but fairly innocent, but this is getting even weirder and creepier. (My main concern was, honestly, someone who was ostensibly an off-duty Rover going after me instead of the rude videographer, but now I'm getting a little freaked out by ?Rover and what exactly he was up to!)
Well, at least everything worked out ok and you are fine. I've been lucky and haven't had to deal with creepers... I tend to give off (without meaning to) an "Don't mess with me" aura that scares away creepers and fans alike. >.>; But I also don't do uber-sexy cosplays or any of the type creepers look for. I applaud you girls that do.

It could be that they were part of staff/volunteers in past years or fans that were too enthusiastic about peace-bonding (sometimes you get ones that want to go after others because the Rovers caught them. ) But there is nothing saying a woman can't be a creeper too; it just isn't as common to run into creeper couples. Though I also kind of wonder if they were with the photographer... But that's all speculation; unless the other party comes clean about what happened, who knows. I just hope no one fell victim to them at con.

General Convention Discussion / Re: Your plans for FanimeCon 2016
« on: May 29, 2015, 09:05:14 PM »
4.  Get a hotel room again, we live 30 mins away, and parking isn't that bad (Overall I paid 18 dollars in parking for the entire weekend, it would have been 32, but we lucked out on one of the days) but not having a hotel room is killing me when I know how much better it is to have one.
I'm envious... I paid closer to $50 in parking. T.T Mostly the first two days were the killer.

Next year:

1) Lose weight so I won't feel so self-conscious about my cosplays and actually have people wanting to take pics of me.

2) Also, get a hotel room. I stayed with family but commuting is a pain and keeps me from attending events/early cosplay gatherings. And multiple cosplays during the day is almost impossible. Walking several blocks to your parking space, when your feet are killing you, is not fun.

3) Look at the event brochure more closely on Day 0 and plan out my con better so I don't miss events. And write down things I want to attend on a separate paper; so I don't have to stare at small black text on dark gray backgrounds when I'm tired.

4) Save up lots of $$$.

5) Finish some cosplays (that I'm waiting on to lose weight for) and start work on some others sooner. (Assuming I have the money & time. ) Also, make myself some Lolita clothes to wear for next year. I didn't buy Goth Rori magazines to let them collect dust.

6) Come down earlier (Though I think I'll crash at someone's place for some of the days. ) so I can hang out with friends that don't attend con. So I'm not trying to do a million things during con.

7) Don't forget what I want signed at home when home is 6+ hrs away.... Also, don't focus on one guest and forget the others... -.-;

8) Practice posing more so I don't look like as much of a fool....

And this is all assuming external factors align in my favor and let me attend....

33
I personally love obscure stuff and less "popular" stuff... but I always miss them. I personally try to avoid too obscure cosplays myself... I had one that looked too generic Miko and everyone thought I was Kikyo.
Also, thanks for compiling the list of links. As a cosplayer needing photos of my stuff, it can be hard to search for photo links... I just wish more people listed what gatherings they had taken pics of and not so much photo dump.

As an example, on Saturday my girlfriend and I were the in-game series mascot (her) and the television advertising gimmick (me) for a series of Japan-only arcade and home release train driving simulation games, "Densha de Go!"  So she was Tetsu-chan, essentially a JR conductor holding a working Japanese railway signal with pop up game messages made to be more con-specific, and I was a salaryman wearing a super-deformed E3 Series Shinkansen around my waist, dancing around to the music from the games which I built into the train - taken from the advertising for the PlayStation ports of the first two games.  All the little kids thought I was great though. lol - https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/p480x480/20090_932461076775633_1607497638623817460_n.jpg?oh=1f0666008d833c5ac72d41371b059cd3&oe=55F35D6A
Believe it or not, but I am actually familiar with the character. Anime styled persona characters of objects/transportation were a really big thing a few years back and I remember seeing images of her floating around various image boards. I believe I even saw merchandise released with her. There were also ones of the game systems, web browsers, and other things besides the transportation ones. And I think it is still a thing with certain crowds. Too bad I didn't see you in person; it sounds awesome. >.<

Good to know about the Flickr thing. It probably is just a heavy traffic cap thing. But I never quite know with Yahoo; they do some questionable things sometimes. I wish they would do that differently though; it makes it hard to know whether you are missing images or not.

34
Thanks for doing this InsaneDavid!

No problem at all!  I've been enjoying looking through all the galleries and seeing awesome cosplay I didn't come across at con.  I like showing my girlfriend that some people cosplay as stuff even more obscure than what we do.

On a side note, I wanted to warn peeps that Flickr seems to cap viewable pics (on their main display) to under a certain about. For the photographers that have 100+, you need to click onto a pic and use the thumbnail scrollbar to see the rest. Just a heads up.

Perhaps I'm weird but I actually miss LineCon on Day 0. All the random people you meet and hold conversations with... the crazy stunts staff did and the peeps that cosplayed on Day 0. And meeting up with people/seeing staff that you'll probably not see all of con. Though I'm glad its gone so I don't have to stress over whether I'm getting my badge that day or not.

We were thinking of just putting up stanchions and a sign that said LineCon....that led to nowhere...
You should have. Make it a circle or a spiral.... Or have fun and make it a maze or something silly like the face of one of the mascots. XD

You had me at Tea.
(I actually forgot about Clockwork)
Ditto. I remembered about it on the drive back... -.-; Didn't help that I was feeling under the weather during con (I think maybe temp. shock because I don't live in SJ anymore and where I live now was like 20 degrees hotter. ) or that I was trying to go to local stores like Kino & Mitsuwa as well as con.

*Takes staff hat off* - One of the side effects of having kicked linecon's ass for two years straight now is that attendees have more free time to do other things. It's a blessing and a curse ;).

Heh, no kidding. Thursday's perk used to be waiting in line for your badge when nothing was going on, so you didn't have to wait in line when things were actually happening. It had a real advantage. Now that linecon's gone, that whole thing is out the window. It'll just be some fond memory we can tell the next generation: "Back in our day, Thursday was for lines and we liked it that way! We called it Line Convention, and it was an event all its own. We traveled 5 feet per hour for 6 hours, barefoot, both ways, in the snow. With an onion tied to our belts, as that was the cosplay trend at the time..."

Dealers Room / Re: Your Shopping List

So... how did you all do? Did you guys find what you were looking for?

I found most of mine and then some. Got some cds and wigs but I didn't end up buying shitajiki (was tempted and then forgot to return to a booth to buy some...) Ended up with some whim purchases and bought an artbook to get signed.

There were some really great stuff (in Dealer's and Swap Meet) that were tempting but I couldn't buy... I thought it was really awesome that they had someone selling Mini brand watches. <3

38
Saying it wouldn't be fair for out of town folks is just an excuse. Many out of town folks came in earlier than Thursday, myself included (I arrived Wed. and attended Day 0), or were checking in on Thurs. Please don't use us as an excuse to deny more services being offered.
I'm glad you were able to go up earlier. Not everybody can; my group was driving in from Los Angeles on Thursday, arrived at our hotel by 4pm, and badge pickup and swap meet was plenty after the 7 hour drive. I'm sure many others can't afford to go up the extra night. Sadly, short of actual stats on how much of the attendance is the locals vs out-of-towners, we're both talking only in anecdotes.

Regardless of the travel argument, having panels running Thursday would be too much, IMO. I could see opening the video rooms early, provided staff were able to get them set up for it, and certainly something at Stage Zero though. Certainly nothing's stopping unofficial events from organizing and doing stuff on Day Zero. It would really depend on what staff could conceivably do while finishing up the setup; and short of staffers chiming it, that's all pure speculation.
It is more that I'm tired of hearing of certain things always being tossed around as an excuse for why Thurs. can't have more events. Nothing personal was meant; I'm sorry to hear that your group couldn't make it out earlier. But choosing to come down on Thurs. rather than Wed. is your choice; I drove just as long but decided to come down a day earlier so I wouldn't be tired on Thurs. Many of my friends (who live in different towns than me & the San Jose area) also came down early. But enough of that... like you said, there are no numbers on who attends what day from where. Nor will Fanime probably ever track that.

I'm not even talking panels.... that was someone else. I was referring to activities that people wouldn't cry over if they happened to miss it... aka things they can see elsewhere. Past years had Stage 0 and anime rooms running on Day 0. I thought there might've been a mini-concert but I think I was thinking of a Fri. mini-concert that happened one year.

39

Also... don't use the work/school conflict excuse as many people have conflicts during the main days (Sat/Sun) that keep them from attending. And there were a lot of people at con on Fri for a day where people had "school"... I think Fri. should have some other evening events besides Swap Meet.

Also, Day 0 events have traditionally been an exclusive to those that pre-regged/early-regged. So, it would be perfectly fair to offer Day 0 exclusive events to those that attend that day. After all... if you pre-regged/early-regged and didn't attend that day, it is your choice. But nothing too huge.... just low key stuff that doesn't need OMG!! staff. And, I think that some years had Stage 0 events/mini-concerts.

And don't be silly; it has been a five day con for several years now. Just because Day 0 doesn't have a lot or is called "Day 1", doesn't mean that it isn't counted.

That said, there were a ton of people on Day 0. I saw a lot of people just wandering around and some of us just lined up for Swap Meet early just because we had nothing better to do. (You can only eat lunch/dinner so many times... ) It would have been nice just to have one more event in-between during that 4 hour gap.

I understand some of the set up issues; I know that there are things that need tweaking at the last minute but I am aware that many facets of the con are already set up sometimes a week before. I think the con center is actually booked for like a week or so?
