It was fun to watch for a little bit. But I never took interest or get past episode 12/

Madlax was kinda like Noir but it got better near the end. They held off the good stuff till the end.

Kiddy Grade, basically wasn't too appealing from start to finish anyways, for me at least.

Hi again Eri. Just wondering what the status for media application is so far. Please email me at [email protected] if there are any updates. Thanks.

I loved Noein's art style. The fight scenes reminded me of the art of Mind Game in a few of the scenes. Then again... Mind Game also reminded me of a bunch of Studio 4C's stuff which would also be disregarded if people only watched it for the animation...=\

General Anime Chat / [Review] Ergo Proxy
February 07, 2007, 01:14:50 AM
Well I was told by a few people that this show was really good and how it's a must watch but I'd have to admit it really left me confused. It wasn't really just the plot about spoiler[ how to take revenge on one's own creation after realizing how that Creator itself had it's own desparing fate of death.] but it was more on the level of how Ergo Proxy would have done better with the pacing and the overall characters.

While I really liked the idea and how it was similar to a bunch of things including books like "Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheeps" or movies/series like "Ghost in the Shell", the way it was carried out wasn't as well executed as it could have been. In some episodes you had nothing but.. well.. nothing and the viewer is just there wondering "why am I wasting 23 minutes of my time". For example, the episode where spoiler[ Vincent, Pino, and Real were all stranded because the wind couldn't carry their ship so it was basically an episode of observation based on Real's point of view.] Then we move into episodes where spoiler[ crap is just thrown at you from all sides noteably the episode where Vincent had his conflict with his other self and where everything in that episiode revolved around the "id, ego, and super-ego" type of structure.] Mentioning this, I think the most disagreeble fact for me was that Ergo proxy went from being an overall well balanced plot with mystery, conspiracy, murder, and psychological conflictions to an almost episodic Kino's Journey type of thing where what you watch the episode after the previous has really nothing to do with the overall plot. Sure, you get really creative episodes like spoiler[ the "Happy Land" episode with Pino and the episode where Vincent was "living" in a fabricated reality created by the jealously of another Proxy.] But when it comes down to it, those minor events that were spent using an EPISODE really takes away from this elaborate plot that is developing in the previous half of the series. The fact that we find out spoiler[ Vincent was a Proxy at around episode 10] really made it feel anti-climatic. I think the efforts of trying to create a "mind ******" really took away from what people can get out of this. I mean, really. The plot isn't hard to understand to begin with. Yeah sure, we hear it all the time over and over: " I think therefore I am". Good for you. No need to get into a bunch of mumbo-jumbo on the purpose of existance by making it more complex to understand. That also took away from the characters.

The characters didn't fair too well with this Anime and it's sad to say because they all started off really well. We get into this nonsensical crap and go into philosophy trying to cover certain areas such as to understand the purpose of existance, how to determine your existance, id vs ego vs super ego.. etc etc. It's fine and all, but when you spend so much time getting the viewer engulfed with this "idea" that is made more complex than it needs to be, it really takes away the value of the characters. In the end, I really didn't give a damn for any of them (minus Pino). spoiler[ Vincent was probably the only person who had any (if any) character development. Daedulas went a-wall and died a stupid death. Real seems to just be there in the end, serving no other purpose than for Ergo Proxy to meet up with this "other self" in their eternal psycological struggle to find meaning in existance even if there wasn't one other than the one given to begin with.]

All in all, I guess I would have liked it better if some of the less necessary episodes ( like the spoiler[ Wal-Mart episode, the getting-stuck-without-windcurrent-so-we-will-spend-24-minutes-doing-nothing episode, the "dream within a dream" episode... etc etc]) were used to develop the characters and maybe even the plot better. But I would say spoiler[ revealing Vincent as the Proxy so early] might as kind of left the creator saying " oh ****, now that people know spoiler[ Vincent is the proxy and we are not even half way done with the series,] what do we do now?" type of thing. but to be honest, I really did still like this series.

More like it might be too boring is what I mean based on only watching a few episodes. "Suck" is pretty general to begin with so I try and avoid that word.

Of course there are just those Anime out there that isn't your cup of tea or your bowl of ramen no matter how much of it you get..*coughGilgameshandFantasticChildren*...

ps.. Many people I know commented on how Strawberry Panic was one of the worst Anime they have seen and so forth but whom also admitted of watching...uhh.. one episode of... so yeah.
#1148
Based on a few episodes they watch and basically say "this sucks" without going any further.

I would probably say:

GunxSword - yeah, there wasn't too much of a story in the first 10 episodes or so. But then it picks up pretty damn quick and ended up having a very good ending.

Solty Rei - "This is boring", "this is crap".. blah blah.. I heard it all from people who have seen it when it came out on fansubs then diminished until it was finally picked up. First few episodes (maybe 7 or 8) started out pretty generic and the characters were boring. but somehow, it picked up like it found some caffeine pills and plowed it's way in having one of the most satisfying endings.

Strawberry Panic! - Yeah, I'm probably going to get crap about this (from the people who saw it). But I do think the characters pick up around mid way and had a kind of cliche " stealing away the bride" kind of feeling. but still a nice ending despite the horrible start.

Tide Line Blue - I was pretty skeptical about this when I saw the first few episodes but I guess it turned out for the better. One problem is I wish it was a little longer.

Bokura Ga Ita - I'm a sucker for those drama stuff but this didn't give me the best impression. Considering it was made by the same people who did H&C and H&C II, I gave it another try and had such great character developments. Too bad it ended too early and now I'm left to reading the Manga..

Dead Agressor (aka Fafner aka whatever) - yeah, hot blooded nut job of a mech pilot who is like the opposite of Shinji and even more fearless than Ayato from Rahxephon. Probably wasn't too appealing (not to me anyways). But how quick the characters change in episode 8 or so.

Princess Tutu - yeah, starts out pretty boring searching for little pieces of heart. Might be considered boring but after episode 11, same story w/e.

This season full of loli shows is going to be....fun....

Ah... She is Celica from the Anime Solty Rei. Great Anime too but not many people know about this. Everyone is busy with Naruto and this "new" TMoHS fad going on atm..

Oh well... since you buy R1 DVDs then I guess it would be a good chance to check out Solty Rei when the DVDs get released on 1/27. I know I will since it's one of my favorite sci-fi Anime :D
#1151
Well, I guess for a lot of people it can be a mix of all 3 (maybe minus bootleg since it could be just a deviation). But in general, which way do you prefer to get your Anime?.

For me, downloading tied with buying Anime DVDs from Ebay. I hardly watch anything from Adult Swim and I only bought bootleg when I was stupid in the past. And going through netflix is too much trouble for me.

I guess I can't trust your opinion, because He Is My Master was the funniest damn show I've seen in ages. Incredibly wrong, yes, but that's half the fun.

As for Kono Mini (that's the short name for "This Ugly Yet Beautiful World" - it's an abbreviation of the Japanese name)... I saw the first ep and said, "Well, gee, that isn't cliché, is it?!" The animation seems fairly high quality, though... I intend to watch it some time when I get bored and am in a mood where I won't mind something kind of fanservicey. Because it's GAINAX. You know it is without even seeing how the first episode has naked girls (plural) falling out of the sky.

I didn't know opinions can be wrong. But ok....

Funny shows are like Ichigo Mashimaro and Hare+Guu...etc etc.

But I guess I'm not a big fan of fanservice to begin with so go figure I guess.
When I said "incredibly wrong" I was referring to the show's sense of humor. Whether or not I trust your opinion, I wouldn't judge it "wrong".

And I generally don't like fanservice, either. Once in a while I will watch a show and not mind it. He Is My Master was one such show.

Ah I see.

Well, that one topic made me wonder. I mean, we all know how infamous gainax is with wacked out endings. Anyone think of a series where there wasn't a deus ex machina cop out? Not saying crazy ass endings make an Anime bad (Mahoromatic, MoO..etc etc).

But for me, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water was one of my personal gainax favorites. Any thoughts?

Registration / Who do I contact for media spot.

Quote from: "Eri"Pre-registration for attendees won't officially end until March or April. 12/31/06 is a significant date for pre-reg because the price goes up on 1/1/07.

You don't need to register for Fanime as an attendee unless your application for a media badge has been rejected. Media and Industry badges have the same access as attendee badges (so no point in having an attendee badge if you have a media or industry badge). There hasn't been any official decision as to when the pre-reg period for media and industry is yet, but I think we're looking at having it start in February and end in April.

As a clarification (for everyone reading this thread), if you're covering Fanime in a reporting capacity, you need a media badge. We won't reject your application if you are legitimate press. If you're not, you're going to the attendee line :P

We will have on-site registration for media and industry in 2007, but we prefer that most of our media and industry do pre-registration.

FanFicGuru- it's cool.. I'm not the, uh, most vocal and/or visible of people.... :)

Ok sounds good.

There should be no problem since the real name I register for media spot will be the same as the real name I have on the animesou.com website. I'll be in touch. Thank you.

Quote from: "FanFicGuru"It depends on the new Marketing director...

"the new marketing director"? Who's that? :P Someone get hired to do my job already so I can remember what life was like before I started working for Fanime? j/k! (note: I've been Marketing Manager/Director or whatever you want to call it for about a year now...)

Anyways, yes, the department that handles Media and Industry registration is under me (and my department), though I don't micromanage it. That's Press Department head's job; it only looks as if I do it too because the press dept head is never at the staff meetings...

As for information about registration, preliminary info should be up in January. It will include info on when the registration period is, what you need to apply, how to apply, and where and who to ask if you need more info (that'd be Pam at [email protected]).

Posting in the forums or emailing me gets my attention if you need it.

Thanks for the quick response. As for the early registration, what do I do about that? I know it's due by 12/31. Should I wait or just go ahead and pre-register?

This past convention was a mess for me. I wasn't even sure I was going to make it in time because of my finals. When I realized I could, the application for press was already passed. So the best I could do was cover a limited amount of things and events. That's why I am tyring to ask before hand and not a few weeks before the convention.

But I'll be looking forward to the updates regarding the press application and what not. I look forward to Fanimecon 2007 and I hope to receive your support. I will do my part write a even better article for the up coming convention.

Hi, I work for animesou.com and I would like to go as media for Fanimecon 2007 so I can hopefully write a better article on the convention as a whole. I wrote a 2006 article already but it seems I was limited with what I can do. Is there an application or a person to contact? Thank you.
