I had a quick question regarding the definition of "Old School"...
Do fighting games count? What about games that have had a remake since 2000? I have a character from a 1989 fighter I'd like to make if I have time. Her original series stopped at around 1992, but she had a few appearances in other compilation games. Does a character within those parameters still count as old-school, or do remakes and appearances disqualify them?

Writing 15 pages for English finals, reading another 100, and then working three full shifts on three consecutive days. No break for Katsu. :[
But next week I'm gonna clean up around the house, make a new costume, and play L.A. Noire and Fallout: New Vegas until my eyes melt. I need the relaxation that clubbing a Legionary skull in with a lead pipe brings.

Schedules
Echoing other complaints. Lack of schedules means I basically missed every guest of honor and half the events. Having a purely online schedule is a little insulting to those of us who don't have smartphones/iPhones/etc. Even the schedules posted for gatherings and video rooms were out of order, which made it difficult to understand when things were happening or find specific events I was looking for.

Registration Line
I agree with those voicing their opinion that there should be a separate line for one-day passes. It would make both lines move faster and be a little more bearable. It is kind of a shame that someone could waste two hours of their one-day pass time in line for the darn thing.

Staffing
Some of the behavior of the staff this year was unacceptable. Rules were enforced inconsistently, and some rovers and volunteers were incredibly rude. I didn't have a problem with anyone at the dealer's hall or artist's alley, like other people have mentioned, but my problems were experienced mostly during video viewing and line-forming. I understand that it can be frustrating to try and run a convention comprised largely of loud or unruly kids who ignore or defy authority, but staff members still need to speak with decency and respect to all convention attendees. Yelling when addressing one person is inappropriate, as is making physical contact to lead them somewhere while making the initial request. I was pushed by a staff member when asked to move against the wall despite being less than three feet from it--being asked is perfectly fine, being touched by a stranger who had not asked me to move before was not. Acquaintances of mine were also grabbed by the arm to be lead to the peacebonding station, which is definitely not okay. And I read on this forum that a staff member tried to confiscate the ID of a member of the U.S. military, which is--do I even need to say it?

Cosplay Restrictions
The ban on military costumes was both established far too late and completely preposterous. There is no real, concrete reason to ban military costumes. The police did not have a problem with them and the only reason I've heard is that a RCPD SWAT cosplayer was mistaken for real SWAT by the police. There was no violence or dangerous confrontation, and even if there had been, that would be far from a decent reason to ban all military/tactical cosplay. I've always considered the rule about no airsoft guns to be silly, but I obeyed it out of respect regardless. This, however, is just absurd, especially since the memo was published at 3:00 P.M. on Friday.

Improvements Over Past Years
I liked the little stall with lots of different kinds of food. The food was overpriced but it was nice to see a variety that was readily available, especially since they had water and fruit displayed rather than just a mass of greasy junk.
I don't know where the maid cafe was, but wherever it was, it was out of the way and I liked it. I've had problems getting to and from places if the maid cafe is in the middle; the line for it is always disorganized and it takes too long to seat people.
Rovers did a better job of keeping people moving through the hallways. It's good to encourage cosplayers and photographers to work along the sides rather than the middle of the hallway. Less of a hazard, more convenient, and fewer accidental shots of the sides of people's head that way.

Overall
Still a fun convention but definitely on the downhill. Events and guests weren't well-publicized and information was not readily available. Registration line was less efficient than it could be. Staff were far ruder and less competent than previous years and new cosplay rules are unfounded. People are saying Fanime is the next AX and that's not a good thing. By 2012, Fanime should focus on being the fun, fan-friendly con it used to be.

Mirnamomo: Alrighty! I'll fix that right up.
CatEyed: Rosalina is completely acceptable! Looking forward to seeing you there.

The gathering is staying on Saturday, as it was originally slated. We already have our spot on the stickies. So, if you need me to make adjustments to the original post on whether you can or can't attend, please let me know! Adjustments for most recent posts will be made tomorrow.

Great to hear from all of you! I'll begin to add a list of cosplayers attending on the original post. I worked things out with the Zelda gathering coordinator, so the Zelda gathering will be right after the Nintendo gathering. Nintendo/SSB will gather at 2:00 in the front lobby of the convention center, between the escalators. If anyone has trouble with the time and location, please speak now while the LoZ coordinator and I can still move things around!

Oorashi: Yes, a female Mario is fine. There were a female Mario and a female Luigi at the AX gathering that were actually quite adorable. :3
Error: That could be a good idea. I'd say do the Nintendo/SSB gathering second, say half an hour after the Zelda gathering? Since so many Zelda characters will be present for the Nintendo/SSB gathering. :)
Moogle: Do you mean the Pokemon Trainer from Brawl? If you mean, literally, Ash Ketchum from the animated series, you should probably save that for the Pokemon gathering instead.

I actually posted it, realized my mistake, and then couldn't edit the title to say "Nintendo/Super etc." Yes, this is supposed to be both Nintendo and Super Smash Brothers. My bad. But a lot of people don't understand that "Nintendo" means classic Nintendo characters that are usually present in SSB games--so people would bring anything published on the Nintendo console, which means tons of characters that aren't really relevant. (For example, last year there were Okami characters even though Okami is a Capcom game and was originally made for the PlayStation 2.) I'll try to edit my original post to be as clear as I possibly can.
I'm mainly trying to dodge the Vocaloid gathering and anything else terribly large, since it might be hard to fit multiple gatherings in close space. I think around 2:00 should be a safe time, but I'll be checking the current listings as often as I can. If anyone has input on time or location, much appreciated.

Here's Nintendo/Super Smash Bros.

There was a cosplay.com thread but it got deleted for lack of interest. I'll make a new one once more people choose their lineup for Fanime.

I'd love to see you guys. Looks like the Cosplay.com thread got deleted for lack of interest, though.
Error, I'm hoping to have it inside the convention center, just inside the front doors by the escalators--hopefully around 1 or 2. If anyone else has input for location or time, though, I'd like to hear it.

The gathering so far is planned to be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, Day 2, in the Convention Center Lobby. This is just inside the front doors of the convention center, between the escalators, due to the heat and harsh lighting outside.
Hey, everyone--
A bit hesitant to open this thread just yet, seeing as how most people are far from setting times or locations so far. However, I figured this thread should be made sooner rather than later. There also doesn't seem to be a thread for this here or on the Cosplay.com forums--however, please correct me if I'm wrong about that! This is the FanimeCon forum thread for the Nintendo and Super Smash Brothers 2010 gathering. Please post here if you'd like to be in the gathering, and give your character--be sure to specify whether you are certain to attend or not sure yet.
(Nintendo is exclusive, meaning games developed by Nintendo such as Animal Crossing. This does NOT include every game that can be played on a Nintendo system, but usually pertains to Nintendo-created games and "classic" characters such as Link and Mario. Super Smash Brothers means ALL Smash games, regardless of whether the character was present in Brawl or not.)
Link to the Cosplay.com thread is here: http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=200411

I've been working with Error, the coordinator of the Legend of Zelda gathering. The plan so far is to hold the Legend of Zelda gathering one hour after the Nintendo gathering, to avoid confusion and crowds from earlier gatherings.

Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

Hey guys!
Haven't gone through all the pages yet, but I'm hoping to find as many photos for everyone as I can. I know some I replied to on Cosplay.com, so sorry if I reply again or skip you somehow or something. I'll do my best. ^^;
In the meantime, my photos http://s199.photobucket.com/albums/aa318/heroonadonkey/Fanime%202009/ and my boyfriend's photos http://s642.photobucket.com/albums/uu149/dantris-driffen/Fanime%2009/ are mostly tagged, so you can try filtering through the photos or using the search function on the albums.
I'm also looking for photos of me as Samus in her Super Metroid ending outfit. It's a black, stomach-baring, sleeveless turtleneck with black boots and bikini bottoms and a blonde wig with a long ponytail. If you have any photos of or with me, I'd love to see them!

I vote for either 11:30 or 12:30. NOT noon. Noon has WAY too many gatherings always scheduled around it.
Some of us do have to change throughout the day, so I'd say no later than 12:30.
Edit: Last I checked, there was no Nintendo gathering thread on Cosplay.com. If there still isn't, shall I go about making one?
Editx2: I made one anyway.

Having a thread on cosplay.com will really help get the word out.

Well, I really dislike that time, but I'll go with it. I'd vote for 11:30, because there are far too many gatherings at noon but most people that commute locally won't get to the con until at least 11. I'd vote for later afternoon, like 1 or 2, but frankly I have no idea how the Masq works so I'll go with you guys.

I searched all over the place like two weeks ago and couldn't find squat on the weapons policy. However, this was the case with last year, and is the case with most large conventions:
No gun imitating a real gun, including airsoft guns, regardless of whether they are loaded or even functioning. If it can be mistaken for a real gun, even with the orange tip, it is not allowed.
However, your best bet is to wait to hear the weapons policy--unless it's already been posted? I'll look around for that.

In my opinion, the inkjet tattoo paper is amazing. (See icon; I used it for my Adiane tattoos.) I find that the factory-made ones tend to flake and rub off easily, whereas these will peel off. And if corners raise up, you can use liquid latex to paint them back down (unlike factory-made, where you can attempt to color in the missing flakes but it won't be pretty.) However, it's not going to work over curved areas like your shoulders and on your face.
I recommend using an eyeliner pencil to lightly draw on the shapes (so you can lick your finger and rub it off if you mess up), then fill it in with Mehron's Paradise AQ.
http://stageandtheatermakeup.com/mhpmacc.htm
Then powder it with a translucent powder, and spray on the barrier spray. This stuff will stick forever, and only come off if you rub it with your typical make-up remover.
Some people recommend using alcohol-activated make-up, but 1) I don't think you want alcohol that close to your eyes when you're removing it and 2) most of the people that try it said they still had problems with sweating it off.

As for the designs on the dress, etc. if you're getting the plain white made, what's your game plan for that? I suggest this simplified screenprinting tutorial:
http://taeliac.deviantart.com/art/Fakie-Screen-Printing-Tutorial-55149185
Since the screenprinting ink or fabric paint will be more vivid than say, markers, and will be neater than if you paint openly by hand.

I agree with Jun and everyone that normally I dislike humanified/etc. characters, but this one is damn adorable and faithful to the whole Japanese theme the game has going on. Plus, it's Okami, which is a really undercosplayed series. If it were, say, lolita Wolf Link, I might have to smack a b*tch.

Not sure I'd recognize it right off the bat, but with a Waka I might.
Regardless I'd probably take a picture anyway, that's a really cute outfit. XD

Assuming I finish my costume in time and decently (which I damn well better!), expect a Zero Suit Samus. =D
