Is anyone planning to attend the speed dating event at FanimeCon?
I know I will! I'd probably flunk out with the ladies, but it'll probably be a fun experience. 8)

I find it more likely that men would make up the majority of the speed dating event. They just seem to be more likely to want to go out of their way to date someone. Also, the vast majority of our community is probably a little on the shy side, and this might be a good way for them to break out of their shells. I'll probably go just for laughs. I may be single, but I rarely have trouble finding dates. I'll bring my Magic deck too, just in case it gets to that point.

I've done open mic a few times, but I get super nervous if I sing alone and usually I can't convince anyone I know to do songs we're both familiar with.

Well, I believe the earlier one could sign up was on Thursday because that's when the post/announcement was made, and I signed up as soon as I got the tweet, but if you signed up early too, that's no help in finding out if I'm waitlistd or not! xD;

as popular as the concept of this event, theres a chance that people will drop out, goto the concert, be wandering around swap meet or other shiny distractions at the convention.
if you really want in, and dont mind the wait, then join the mini wait list group outside- per the speed dating staff's instructions and hope for the best.
I bet some people on the waitlist will not even try showing up, because they think it will be too full, then you end up get the spot if you wait :)
Or you could just have a dork like me... who got accepted twice.(I messed up my first request, so I submitted another... they both were accepted >.<) So there is one spot at 8:30.

As I recall from the staff meeting, there were 40 seats for speed dating, however, there were already 112 people that signed up. Sign ups have obviously gone up since the announcement and from what's been posted there are only 2 time slots for speed dating, 7 and 8:30. So that's 80 people, and those who are on the wait list will have to beat out 20 other people waiting (assuming that half of the wait list is female). Then those of us not on the wait list (or waiting to get on the wait list) will have to beat out X number of people where X is greater than 40.

I was in 7pm slot. They had 8 girls and 11 guys. Guys had letters as their name tag and girl had numbers. Each were given 1 piece of paper with rules and talking advice, 1 page to take notes on the person you talked with, one smaller paper on which you indicate whether you would like to date that person or not, and a pen.
Girl and guy sit on the opposite of each other and have 3 mins for talking. I enjoyed the talking, don't know about the others. The time just goes by real quickly, and it took me mostly by surprise when the 3 mins were up and the sound was made. On the table you had 3 electronic color-changing objects to set the mood: small candle, a round ball and a square. After 3 mins, the guys got up and went to the next girl.
At the end of it, I gave the small paper to them with my choices. They first let out the guys and then the girls. Once I was out, I told the person that I wanted to be contact by email rather than phone. I did not hung out afterward, and just went my own way.
after 2 days, the people send an email as to whether you got a match or not. Don't know what is said if you get a match, since I did not had one. In the one where you have no match there is just generic, "I am sorry it is did not work out" sort of message.

the sad/idiotic thing for me, is that the paper i had written my notes on?
i accidentally threw it away so some of the guys i actually dnt remember who they are specifically (sorry!! XD)
but it'll be interestin to see wat happens and stuff

Thanks for the awesome description/explanation of how the speed dating works daiphyer.com, never been to one so I had no idea how it was set up (the only thing I had to go on, was the speed dating they did in the movie hitch. Funny movie btw)
Sounds like it was pretty cool and from what I read princesskitty18, ash_chan, and Knightfire they seemed to like it. Other than the note taking process being too short, they enjoyed their experience.

For those who actually went to Speed dating-
why not give us some insight on what was the format?
what kind of questions were you usually asked?
do you feel the crowd was sociable ?

Basically you are given a paper with a list of letters(Males) and numbers(Females) with yes and no beside it. You also receive a paper for notes with the numbers and letters again, so you can attempt to remember the people when deciding people.
The layout of the room was kind of a circle zigzag thing. (Recommend changing that. Some guys kept getting confused XD) Basically all the females sat at the tables and the guys traveled from table to table. Afterwards we handed in the paper of our choices to the very kind people running the event.
I ended up asking most the questions, when the guys came over. I asked stuff like what their favorite genres of manga/anime were, what kind of music they liked, what hobbies other then anime/manga/etc did they like? A common question was why are you at Fanime? Sometimes you would get to caught up in answering questions that you wouldn't get to start the next question. The time does pass by fast if you keep the questions coming.
I feel parts of the guys were sociable. Sometimes it was very easy to chat with the person, while other times it seemed like they were too shy or didn't know how to answer questions. =/
I feel next year, if it runs again to maybe give some more time to write notes in between transitions. I remember that I was grateful when the no show guy or my friend came around to me. Gave me time to look around and back track. XD
Overall it was a very interesting experience. I don't know if I would do it again though. Not my cup of tea. I think though that it should be hosted again for others.
I pretty much stuck to the "Why are you at Fanime" question, and with the exception of 2 guys, it lead on to normal conversation and I didn't have to try so hard.
Suggestions:
-Circle/ Square seating pattern instead of zigzag, as it cuts into the "date" if someone is lost and has to check for where they go next.
-A quick break in between each person to write notes. I didn't want to write notes when the person was right there close enough to read them, so I was stuck trying to write them in the middle of the next "date" and cutting into that time and I ended up falling behind and having to run back and find the previous guy's letter to mark him down and that was a bit troublesome. Not long, just like 10 seconds when people stand in limbo, just enough to write some abbreviated notes.
-Shoot out a twitter reminder or give an announcement over the loud speaker to remind people of times. It wasn't so much a problem in the 8:30 slot, but I think the reason the 7:00 slot was so empty was because people had forgotten about it until it was too late. I had almost forgotten myself. I was so excited for the Speed Dating and definitely wanted to make it, but I got so caught up in parading around my just finished Gyarados that I lost track of time. I was lucky to look at my phone at 6:51 so I could skidaddle over to the room just in time to check in.
-Don't let one group (guys or girls, depending on who's sitting) come in until the event starts. We ended up sitting with the same person for a very long time (15 minutes, at least). If you weren't lucky enough to be seated with someone you connected with, it would be super awkward.

From the guys perspective:
The ladies went in first, thus began the wait. The dudes all waited outside in line waiting for the OK to come in. The ladies were given numbers, the dudes were given letters. We went in, and we were assigned to the first person based on letter/ number. Every three minutes we would rotate in a clockwise and then zig zag matter.
I was most nervous at the very beginning, but then I got really comfortable as the event went on. The atmosphere, lighting, and ambiance were of suprisingly high quality, so props to the speed dating staff wanting to set the right mood. I liked alot of the girls I met there, they were really fun to talk to. There were a few that were too soft spoken, where it was really hard to hear them, or the amount of time given wasn't enough to get to know them.
The 8:30 slot was short by one guy, so all the dudes went back at the end to their 1st date, by that time, the awkwardness was gone and had a really great time talking to her.

It's because of my Psychology Today or Scientific American Mind Magazine said that GIRLS are LESS PICKY when they are the ones MOVING from TABLE TO TABLE. Just thought you might want to increase those chances of success for next year. ^_^ If you want I can go digging around for the article about it.

You totally missed what I was trying to get across.
What I meant was: When it's the guys moving from table to table, Girls are LESS LIKELY to pick ANY guy to date/give their e-mail to/etc.

You may want to talk to the Department Head of Stage Zero, and take it up with the Division Head of Live Programming I believe if you really seriously want to have this "The Dating Game" format like event to work out.
The point of "Speed Dating" is that you can meet many ppl over a short time. The Dating game format, would be funnier, but less time effective compared to speed dating.

Heck, I wanted to participate, couldnt because the waitlist was full and they didnt accept anyone because it was full, but I'm still making friends because of the epic cosplay I had- go figure. :P

It was a great way to strike up friendships at the very least, I think.

I totally support a speed dating event. I think it would be far more practical than those "how to talk to guys" & "how to talk to girls" panels.
I am entirely shocked that I somehow missed the fact that there was such an event for fanime 2010..... and here I thought I was brilliant to think of such an idea.
Is there any place where the feedback on this event was posted? Basically, did it go well, or was it a disaster? I certainly hope the event is renewed (and or expanded) for 2011 so that I might have a chance to participate.
^ Ah, most people didn't know about it because it was a last minute thing. Sign up had appeared on the main Fanime Page about a week just before the con, even so only a few lucky people had that experience. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. (I saw the application for it but I procrastinated. :P)
I don't recall seeing an official feedback thread for Speed Dating but I guess this would be it, just backtrack a bit. :P
from the very sparse info that was buzzed about - spots filled up VERY quickly and even though there was wait-lists --- they couldnt take anyone 'new' in. The event was totally booked and pretty popular despite having time conflicts with evening events such as concerts and etc.
Rules were expressed VERY sternly. and the time limit was strictly enforced, as well as nonpersonal or specific questions. and the results of a 'match' only happen when both parties tell the speed dating staff that a match is considered.
overall it was a great popular/ decent execution for their first run, and they may likely bring back the event.
Here's to hoping for all you single Fanime Con-goers or peeps who'd like to make new friends around the Convention.
Good to know Jerry. If I may make a further suggestion(s).
1) (this should go without saying) Give advanced warning when sign-ups are to be made active, OR have multiple events such that number of seats becomes less of a limitation, OR assign seats via a raffle so that it no longer matters whether you signed up early, or 5 min before deadline.
2) Provide time for both the men and the women to be the ones rotating. Reason being, its fair, and according to recent studies, the party that is stationary, is more picky than the one that is moving (regardless of gender, they controlled for that).
3) (this may be a moot point if it was already addressed in the sign-up form, which I didn't see, and don't have access to). Age might be a factor, so sorting participants into age ranges may be beneficial. Perhaps 3 categories: Age doesn't matter (self identified on the sign-up sheet), 18-22 (college), 23+ (after college) (those ranges could be whatever... just throwing out there), and then each range has their own rotation setup.
just fyi I'm not part of the fanime speed dating team - so you may want to e-mail your suggestions to the email addy of the fanime speed dating staff once they've established an event for fanime 2011.
from what i remember the event in 2010 was very last minute, and all things considering with their first run thru did very well.
tho from what i heard i think the men/boys were the only ones moving rotating, and for all intense purposes, i think the girls have a right to be picky (in my opinion) :P
as for the age ranges, i think some tinkering with the cut-offs will need some adjustment. but thats for the staff of this department will decide. that said...of course with concept of potential "dating" thrown in there... parents of an 18yr would definitely have issues with them meeting/seeing someone around 30+ im sure the staff has also considered it and will factor it into the rules.
once fanime meetings and departments are established, keep the comments, questions and support up.

just remember that fanime is all about "by fans and for fans" mantra - so they'll take your suggestions into consideration and tune the procedure/event as they Fanime Staff sees fit.
if you 'really' want to make a change - then goto one of the many Fanime General Staff meetings that will be announced sooner or later. by being involved and speaking to the people in person and actually volunteering you see first hand whats goes on behind the scenes and the how stuff actually happens in order for FanimeCon to be as epic as it already is.
Remember ladies and gentlemen, harassment is NOT okay in the real world...neither is stalking. So please, don't do it at Fanime, especially during/after Speed Dating.

I don't think it would be a big deal though ^_^
on another note: I'll prolly be going if this event is happening again, last year I couldn't because I was almost chained to my Artist Alley table for most of the con :(
as for age ranges 18-24 and 25-30 then 30-50 and 50+ depending on how many people sign up maybe combine some of the age groups or split them up, like if there's alot of 18-24 make it 18-20 and 21-24

my last one ended because the distance was too great and the relationship too long
but depending on the ppl, it works

i'd expect 90% of them to be within 100 miles of san jose, if not 30 miles, which isn't necessarily a desirable distance for most, but more manageable than other states.

I also arranged it so that the younger (likely to be less independent) would be able to hang out with the person that they like during the con [con hookups :3]
the older individuals would likely be more mobile and able to meet up outside of the con if given the opprotunity

Next year i'm modifying the ranking system so that rather than modifying things to be like how much i like somebody and hope i get 1 match, but rather than a binary where you might match people with someone that they only have mild interest in.
There can be 3 choices:
-Relationship interest
-Friendship interest
-No interest
In B4 all girls just want to be "just friends"

well we have enough operators this year to probably do it with more ease than last year.
and i will likely try and wrangle things together with them with more than a few weeks foresight. (ideally a few months, but admittedly, this isn't something i'm particularly concerned with starting to set up until January.)

Me and jade haven't even figured everything out yet. That's basically a word for word repost from last year's. Unless I wasn't told something.
I wasn't planning on doing anything official until after preregister even opened up. And we were talking about abandoning the 2011 format in favor of the 2010 model. But again this is all speculation.
I do however intend to give far more than a 7 days worth of notice if I can. I want to try and get a solid system set up. I also plan to bounce ideas off of forum goers to gauge expected output.
But after I meet up with some of the others ill definitely try and keep the forums updated.

Eh, I'm not too worried. I'm not sure if well be able to fill them to capacity if we do as many as I'd like to do. I figure we have about a 6:1 ratio of guys to girls. I'm hoping if I give 5 months notice and planning I might be able to get it to 2:1. :3

I'll look into that at the next meeting on the 21st, i still need to lock down both Speed Dating threads on the forums and just make a new one for 2012 Discussion and Troubleshooting. But i'm still waiting to have a meeting with the Speeddating head, and to get more of a grasp of our room setups. If things haven't changed from what i was last told, we will hopefully get a room to our own for the whole convention in a satellite hotel. If that's the case i'm wondering if i will do like 2 longer ones each day, or like 3 or 4 of ones like the previous years. It honestly depends on the turnout and demand. I can probably say that we are going to try to accommodate the LGBT community this year; but again, it's all a matter of registration and space allotments.

they aren't takin sign up yets but it SUPPOSEDLY should go up sometime in february if not march. ppl are still getin the facts together. and its pretty fun if a bti chaotic sometimes XD

That is the goal. It's mostly trying to plan and keep everything going smoothly. We'll probably end up Locking this thread and the other speed dating thread by February and create a new Speed Dating 2012 thread in which to pose a lot of the thoughts we got bouncing around.
So far i'm trying to figure out a suitable round robin meathod for LGBT pools. My friends jokingly suggested splitting them by Seme and Uke, but that's just silly.
It's not that it's hard for me to figure out; i just haven't really... done more than find the problem.

Last year it wasn't opened up until like 9 days before the Con. I'm hoping to allow for at least 3 months of sign ups available. Though i hope that the ratios even out over an extended period of time, rather than polarizing further.

I might be interested in joining in, lol. I have never taken part in anything like it before, so it would be a new experience. I'll keep an eye out for the sign-ups on it. :D

Uhhh, we'll see what happens soon. It's mostly a matter of just having a sit down meeting/lunch with the SD head and being like "Hey, how do you wanna do this? this is how i think we should do this!" and then messaging the webteam and the announcement people and being like "ITS OPENING ON THIS DATE".

Possible number of events are still being determined.

That's what I thought too, you wouldn't even have a chance to start a good conversation with anyone.

the problem is that it takes some ppl a lil bit of time to first get over the initial awkwardness of meetin a new person every couple of minutes
some are pretty open to just talking (like me) and there are others that are kinda shy at first
so that lil extra time might do well in cushioning the conversation

The reason sign-ups aren't open earlier is because the event fills up ridiculously fast. I have no doubt that there will be enough people to fill up all the times we have set aside for the event.
Thank you for your input about the time allowed per person. I am still debating on whether or not I want to make it 3 or 5 minutes. It sounds like 5 minutes is preferred, so I will try to adjust the event to suit the longer time. I will let you know when I decide.

well. there has to be an even amount of boys and girls for the speed date to work.
As far as the schedule goes, it will be posted up soon. But if I recall in the years before it was around 6pm or later.

It is better if you sign-up beforehand via registration since the event is so popular. We will also anticipate people just lining up for wait-list, but no guarantees! Keep an eye out on the website and forums later in May for sign-ups.

Like I said, for FanimeCon 2011, we are planning a Speed DATING Event. There is not "Speed Friendship" or any event like that for this 2012 con. If you have inquiries about the events we plan or have suggestions/ideas, please direct them to our Main 2012 Thread. We are open to suggestions or comments, but there is no "Speed Friendship" thing for 2012 and no further comments about this subject will be elaborated on.
