Panels and Workshops / Re: Too controversial?
February 17, 2012, 11:59:40 AM
As stated earlier if it is a panel on LGBT(etc) in anime / manga I would be there. Hell I'll even try to dig out my old "Straights for Gay Rights" button from 1977.

As for too controversial. Nah. Surely less than my Japanese Sex Trade in Anime and Manga presentation I did in 2010, and plan to do again this year if Fanime has me as a guest again.

I had general fun.

It was great to see people from previous years, meet new folks, I always enjoy doing panels and am already planning to do some interesting ones next year.

Oh yes, they gave me a nice surprise at the closing ceremonies. It's sitting next to my TV, if I put it in front of the set it block some of the subtitles.

This is a bit tricky. Parody is OK by US law, and we are talking trademark law not copyright, so a parody of a work would be fine. However you could still be sued by the rights holder even if they lost. Now trouble is far more likely when the trademark owner is a US company than when it is a Japanese company.

So for example a parody dojinshi using characters from a Disney or Marvel title is not as safe as one from a manga series published in aJapanese magazine like Animal. In fact the editors of Animal may want to buy a copy if they see it.

Now individual cons may have different policies on such publications.

Of course you could just do an original dojinshi, after all that is how Shirow started out with publishing Black Magic.

The Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco has an interesting show coming up soon.

Drawing the Sword: Samurai in Manga and Anime

I'll be checking it out as I work just down the street from the museum.

Of course I'm ready to do more panels at Fanime again.

The turnouts were great this year, I credit the combination of good panel descriptions in the program guide plus a well done easy to read schedule. I pretty much packed all my panels.

Video Programming / Re: Old school?
March 23, 2008, 03:45:44 PM
I agree! It would be great to have more of the 1970s and even 80s shows. Devilman, Cobra, Goku Midnight Eye, Ace o Nerae!, The Rose of Versailles, Tomorrow's Joe, there are so many titles.

If you want to go real old school you could intersperse short titles from Digital Meme's DVD collection of early anime. Silent with benshi accompanyment and subtitles.

After all it's not really old school if it's in color.

Having come into anime fandom only in the last 6 years or so, I think there isn't enough emphasis for newer fans on how to tell if something is a bootleg or legitimate copy of something -before- they buy it.

Check out:

Also my "Reporting Pirated Anime and Asian Cinema" page:

I'll be adding manga to that mix as more sites selling scans of commercially available manga translations are popping up.

Laptop - to use during my panels. Also for checking email.

A large selection of AV adaptors, to use during my panels.

Plenty of changes of clothes.

Funds for dealers room (hoping to find the second Wild 7 VHS subbed and other old stuff)

Gifts for some of the Japanese guests.

My sister, if she can make it.

Just drop me an email and we can start talking about possible panel topics.

How about a link on the home page to information on the guests we can expect this year. I see nothing on this on the pages.

I'm curious if Yamaga-san will be here, I plan to buy him an interesting gift which will require tracking down certain people in the US science fiction and entertainment industry to sign it. If he's not here I'll have to hand deliver it to him in Tokyo next year.

I would love to be there again.

I've done the Anime for Parents panel since the Red Lion days.

I even created a series of web pages related to it, Anime (and Manga) for Parents (and Other Grownups).

I haven't heard if Famine wants me again this year, I may contact them about doing a couple of panels anyway if they can schedule them on the same day so I can take BART down from Oakland and do them.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Church Service
November 08, 2007, 12:49:49 PM
"Now if you were to host or suggest a panel on religious themes in anime (well, like the church vs evil, testing one's faith, etc.), "

That could be very interesting.

And I am up to doing such a panel.

After all it's time I did more with my masters degree in theology in talking about anime.

Of course Yamaga-san.

I'd add:

Monkey Punch, his idea of fun is to hang out and talk to attendies.

Megimi Hayashibara

Fred Schodt - he has a new book out on Tezuka (The Astro Boy Essays)

Helen McCarthy

Toren Smith

And of course I'm always willing to hop BART down from Oakland if you want me again.

So for me, if Fanime wants to be better than AX, they need to get things other than Anime to watch;
Such as?

There was plenty of non-anime viewing stuff going on at Fanime. What was missing that you would like?

You get hugs.

I had a great time and I blame many more people than just Ebner.

Thanks all.

Love you Jason.

Just no hugs! {grin}

Bit of advice on the urban scene.

In my experience fast food chains are more likely to have gang activity.

Gang members seem to be heavily into brand names and trendy stuff. A locally owned burger or taco joint may have a babbling bum but at least they are not as dangerous.

When the big mall opened up in the San Jose area they had a gang shooting on the first day.

I was once asked if I felt nervous living in Oakland. I don't, but I do avoid trendy shops, fast food franchises and chain stores.

On update to add.

The first post in this thread said the Cutie Honey live action movie was not available on legit DVD.

It now is from Bandai.

General Convention Discussion / Taking bart
April 12, 2007, 11:04:37 AM
Feh!

Of course I did not think to check on Sacramento to San Jose by Amtrak.

You can go direct, there are someting like 9 trains a day that take you there.
