Title: Your plans for FanimeCon 2016
Post by: Admiral Donuts on May 26, 2015, 12:17:38 PM
Let the FanimeCon 2016 countdown begin!

Only 366 days until Day 0 on the 26th of May, 2016.

Best thing I did last year after Fanime '14 was make notes on what to do different and it worked out well. I left behind stuff I didn't need and ate better because of it.

Anybody thinking in advance for next year?

I know Fanime is always on Memorial Day Weekend, but have the dates for 2016 officially been confirmed?

I think they usually don't confirm the theme for next year until much closer to the con date.

2015 is hands down the best year that I have ever been to Fanime Con. (Been going since 2010)

Every year I try to do things differently before going to the con and this year has taught me that I need to do a few more things to get ready for 2016's Fanime Con...

1. Bring some sort of air freshener. I know it gets sweaty and some people can not help but smell, but...it's not that hard to go into the bathroom and put on some deodorant or something. So I think I'll bring a fresh smelling something or other to the con so my nose wont burn from the nerd sweat.

2. Go to restaurants instead of fast food. No more fast food at the cons for me. they are to packed and I found out that most of the restaurants are pretty empty a few blocks away from the con. They are not expensive either :] (Around $20-25 a meal with three of my friends)

3. Try and get Fairmont housing again. I have to say that this was they best hotel experience that I have ever had during the con. The staff was awesome and polite. didn't have to worry about parking the whole con because my girlfriend just kept her car in their valet parking the whole con. Came out to $60 the whole weekended which is worth it to me not having to worrying if anyone is going to break into the car.

Can't wait till next year!!!!!!

I'd say that this year was so fun and well-run, that I'd do everything this year next year.
Fairmont, restaurants/food, luggage and cosplays, panels and gatherings, etc.

Got several plans on my list!

+ Actually make my cosplays! I've been buying mine but I really want to change that.
+ Find a hotel that's even closer than the Doubletree. I don't mind the shuttle, but I prefer to be within walking distance. It's much easier. Then again, I go in a group so this is out of my control.
+ Bring some kind of air fresher or something, gosh. There was some funky O.B. going around, especially on Saturday.
+ Bring a better bag! Mine was too difficult to open at times.
+ Probably get some contacts, too. I actually lost my glasses on Friday morning but they were found on Sunday night. C:
+ And, finally. Be more sociable! I often find myself talking to other cosplays that are dressed in the same series so it'd be great to go beyond that horizon.

Oh, oh oh oh. And arrive to restaurants earlier rather than later! In five minutes, it can go from completely empty to utter chaos.

I've got a couple plans!

-Host my DanganRonpa Panel
-Possibly host a DramaticalMurder / DMMD panel
-Finish Cronus & Erisol sprite cosplays
-Get my Io Naruko cosplay from DefenseClubLove.
-Get a hotel for the night of the Black&White ball.
-Get contacts.
-Finally , continue being social.

And work more than I have ever before :)

My friends and I were talking about an Animal Crossing group for next year so that may be a thing!

I definitely hope to do swap meet, host the snk gathering (and possibly other gatherings!), and host my panel again (2016 would be the 5th year I host it, wow!!)

Lessons learned from 2015:
- I need to make sure I'm getting adequate sleep during the con
- Carb-heavy foods will not sustain me, I need to make sure I'm eating enough protein as well
- Don't bring unfinished cosplays/other projects - just use the con time to enjoy the con!

My friends live not too far and I used to crash with them but now I get us a hotel room for the con. It's really worth it because you don't have to have a DD and you can keep all your costumes close by instead of driving back home to change.

I have plans on returning back to the con. But I'm NOT paying 450$ For just one night of a hotel. I've made some back up plans by booking a hotel room at the Fairmount and The Saint Claire (soon be known as the Westin hotel)  for the next memorial day weekend because I do want to return and I DON'T want a hotel that's so far away from the convention center. Seriously who would pay that much for 1 night!? I don't know about you but even booking a hotel at Anime Expo is CHEAPER then what you get at Fanime! While I couldn't book the hotel I want at AX through their website. I was easily able to book a hotel room from the hotel's official site. And each night is around 350$ While it's expensive as heck and I REALLY wish I could have gotten a discount this year. It's still worth it because that's much I think AX is worth going too. Booking the Fairmount for Fanime without booking it through Fanime's website costs as much as a night's stay at The Ritz Carlton's in L.A. and quite frankly I admit enjoyed this year's fanime and the convention is going to the right direction that it's winning me over to not switch to a different convention. But really? 450$ A night for a convention like Fanimecon? I don't think so.

And while I booked a hotel at the Westin as well for 260$ a night without fanime discount that's still pushing it. That's the maximum I think anybody should pay really. Speaking of which... has anybody stayed at the Saint Claire before? If so have you experienced anything haunted at your stay there? While I know the Saint Claire is going to turn into a new hotel. I'm scared it might be still haunted even with renovation... it probably explains the price tag during the memorial day weekend...

I have stayed at the St. Claire on two occasions. First occasion, I was upgraded to a Suite and it was a pretty nice one with a fireplace and everything. Second time was a standard 2 bed room. Nothing super fancy. Elevators are quick though...and stairs are not difficult here.

If you don't book within our housing blocks, I'm afraid that the hotel charges what they feel is a fair price for the weekend and unfortunately that means the few rooms we don't take can go for much higher than their normal daily rate.  An example would be the MGM Grand on Fight Weekend (Manny vs. Mayweather) as those rooms were going for thousands a night when they normally would be 100 dollars a night. Hopefully next year you are able to get a room through our housing blocks. Alternative is to get rooms nearby the DoubleTree Hotel. Shuttles run quite often and I saw quite a few people utilize them.

1. Fix my Cheshire Cat costume from Pandora Hearts, I need to redo shoes almost entirely and fix the tail, as well as play with my ears/wig and see if I can do it more seamlessly.

2.  Make my fiancee finish her Sophie costume so I can stop getting the question "Hey Howl where's Sophie?" when I walk around as Howl.

3.  Plan out my costumes earlier than a week in advance, I have plenty, but it's easier to know ahead to make it all more convenient.

4.  Get a hotel room again, we live 30 mins away, and parking isn't that bad (Overall I paid 18 dollars in parking for the entire weekend, it would have been 32, but we lucked out on one of the days) but not having a hotel room is killing me when I know how much better it is to have one.

5.  This is the most important one, work on NOT giving off the vibe of "Don't talk to me".  My fiancee constantly tells me I give that vibe off, and all of my friends who I've met at cons except 1 tells me I seem scary.  I had someone once tell me I was "Kuudere" so I guess I need to work on it, I'm actually friendly, I just... don't exude it.

my list

- Address other cosplayers by character name.  I felt warm and fuzzy whenever someone addressed me by my character name; am I the only one who feels this way?
- Converse and interact more.  I've learned to start conversations with a compliment and a question so it's a matter of doing it.  That's a habit that will serve me anywhere in life too.
- Have faster reactions when it comes to asking for photos.  I was happy to pose for anyone who asked as long as the person isn't creepy (everyone who did ask came off as respectful).  So long as I am respectful, it's appears likely that people will say yes.
- Join a few more dances at Black and White Ball.  The staff did a fantastic job at creating an environment welcoming people who had more desire to dance than technical skill at it.  Had originally thought I would stand back and observe; ended up squeezing a few in.  Also, it makes for fun stories to join in dances while in cosplay.

Seriously, I can't really say what my 2016 "plans" are, because we've got other, non-convention "plans" that don't really work by saying that something will be done by a certain date.  And those take priority.

Assuming all external forces remain the same, I do have two goals -
Hubby and I will actually finish our Count and Haydee costumes (Gankutsuou) we started a couple years back
We host a house party with friends during Fanime.  I have a karaoke machine, and I'd like to get my personal library filled out with some anime songs.  I want romaji lyrics though, and I need to make those CDG files myself though, so it's a little more work than just downloading the karaoke tracks.

I'm envious... I paid closer to $50 in parking. T.T Mostly the first two days were the killer.

Next year:

1) Lose weight so I won't feel so self-conscious about my cosplays and actually have people wanting to take pics of me.

2) Also, get a hotel room. I stayed with family but commuting is a pain and keeps me from attending events/early cosplay gatherings. And multiple cosplays during the day is almost impossible. Walking several blocks to your parking space, when your feet are killing you, is not fun.

3) Look at the event brochure more closely on Day 0 and plan out my con better so I don't miss events. And write down things I want to attend on a separate paper; so I don't have to stare at small black text on dark gray backgrounds when I'm tired.

4) Save up lots of $$$.

5) Finish some cosplays (that I'm waiting on to lose weight for) and start work on some others sooner. (Assuming I have the money & time. ) Also, make myself some Lolita clothes to wear for next year. I didn't buy Goth Rori magazines to let them collect dust.

6) Come down earlier (Though I think I'll crash at someone's place for some of the days. ) so I can hang out with friends that don't attend con. So I'm not trying to do a million things during con.

7) Don't forget what I want signed at home when home is 6+ hrs away.... Also, don't focus on one guest and forget the others... -.-;

8) Practice posing more so I don't look like as much of a fool....

And this is all assuming external factors align in my favor and let me attend....

I need more money
Need more info -  i did not know theres other things going on at the other buildings.
Take more pics
Have a good time.
We got there after parking and registered at around 2:30 or 3 on Sat. Stayed till 10ish. We live an hr and 15mins away. So the drive isn't bad.

Take more photos and video.
On the way down to San Jose, I decided to stop at Fry's and pick up a new camera. Turns out I was way too busy with the con to learn how to use the camera so it mostly remained a fashion accessory.
That and I was on Snapchat way too much.

Stay at either the Fairmont, Hilton, or Marriot for sure.  The last 2 years I have had to stay at another hotel and use a shuttle and it isn't fun.  When I used to stay at the Fairmont I could do so much more.

Loose some more weight so I can do more cosplays.

Get more costumes so I can be in more gatherings.

Try and have a girlfriend by next Fanime, but I'm being realistic lol.

I live next to the four-points, just a 2 block walk, was nice just taking the 24hour shuttle.  Stopped paying for the hotel convenience once they started that service.

Usually after each Fanime, I start planning for next year's, due to post con depression....... xDDD

I kinda have an idea of what I'll cosplay for next year, but need to actually get down and decide that. It might be a bit too early to plan, but it's actually worth it, especially if one can start actually working on cosplays way ahead of time. However for some reason I still end up working on a few things right before con. ^^;;

Seriously post-con depression never happened to me in the 15yrs ive been going.  I've only gotten depressed about not being able to attend AX anymore after 10 fun years

Going for only 2 days next year...I guess my attention span is failing as I do more of these.  So I did Day 0,1,2,3 this year and was too burned out for day 4, really was done on day 2 and pushed day 3 only for AMV's.

Debating bringing my girlfriend to Fanime Con for the first time... I've gone for the whole weekend ever since I started going... she is only a casual anime fan.  She wants to go but I think she'll get bored fast, and not like all the walking.  I'm not sure if she'd enjoy it.  Maybe I should leave her home :o

4. Enjoy Fanime

Okay, seriously:

1. Take some cosplay photos, and try something a little different from my current technique
2. Try actually cosplaying (I say this all the time but never get around to it XD)
3. Try an event I've never tried before (Black and White Ball perhaps?)
4. Stay up through the entire Midnight Madness marathon
5. Try something new and out of my comfort zone
6. Give something else another chance

It's so far out, I have no idea on specifics, but my plans are pretty much the same as always:

1. Wear way too many costumes. Make a lot of costume changes.
2. Do way too many photoshoots
3. Go to gatherings
4. Sing a lot of karaoke!
5. Dinnerstuck
6. Hit up the hotel pool and/or spa to relax
7. Probably wear costumes that are impossible to wear and cause lots of pain...and then take them off and do the same thing the next day

This year, I want to actually submit some panels, and hopefully host some. (I might also attend panels, if there are any interesting ones.) I might try to cut back on the number of cosplays I bring (not sure if I'm making anything new...maybe just one thing), so I'm not spending my entire con changing in and out of costume, but I know myself, and that doesn't seem likely to actually happen.

I don't know what I'm bringing yet, costume-wise. It may end up depending on the gatherings schedule, what I decide I want photoshoots for, and what I'm excited about when it comes closer to con.

I tend to spend a lot of my con doing shoots, which is something I enjoy. If any photographers in this thread want to shoot with me, hmu

*Shrugs* I guess the same usual thing before things went downhill...

1. Go to musicfest as that's the sole reason why I bother to continue going Fanime

2. Go to the industry/ Guest of Honor panels if the guests interest me.

3. Go to artist alley and meet a lot of famous or very well known artist. This is also a fairly decent factor for me coming to Fanime. I get to meet all the well known artists on DA and meet them in real life and commission them. As they don't do digital. It's a golden opportunity to commission them traditionally. The whole portfolio-based thing is isn't too bad I guess.

4. Go to the vendor's hall. It's the 2nd biggest vendor hall compared to AX.

5. If I'm bored, Guess I'll go eat and get a meal.

6. Go to the 18+ panels. These are the ONLY fan panels I enjoy...

I've suddenly found myself in charge of organizing a Revolutionary Girl Utena cosplay group. How did this come to be.

Hopefully the group will happen, because I'm excited. If anyone wants to join up, PM me. (It's looking like we might be doing Student Council members.)

Good luck with it!! I tried to put together a cosplay group of something this year, but it didn't quite turn out....... ;_;

Thanks!

It seems to keep growing, too. @___@ I had no idea that so many people would be interested. Hopefully it all comes together.

I tried putting together a group for last Fanime, and that didn't work out. I'm going to see what I can salvage from it for this year (even if it just ends up being a few people). It can be tough to get a group together.

Also, I see in your signature that you're cosplaying Rinoa? Is that current information, or has it not been updated? I cosplay Ultimecia, so if you want to do a shoot, let me know. It's surprisingly difficult to find Rinoa cosplayers. (Ulti is a shoot-only cosplay, since it's actually quite physically painful to wear, and I'm completely useless with a giant headpiece, wings, and 3" claws on my hands! Don't expect me to wear it around the con, haha)

I am very excited for this year's Fanime!  It is going to be my first year making my costume on my own!  Last year I had help with my cosplay but this year its all on me.  As vain as this sounds, i feel like I'm leveling up as a cosplayer! Or, I'll at least gain some XP.  Hopefully it turns out okay.  I hope to get out of my shell more and party.  I know people don't really like to talk about that or it seems taboo but the nightlife at Fanime was so much fun.  I met a lot of people and had some great late nights hanging out and doing all kinds of ridiculous stuff.  I have a "plan" to go to as many panels as I can this year!  I missed out on some I wanted to go to last year and depending on what is offered I'm going to try and participate more.

I probably won't have as many plans as last year to do, but that won't stop me from having a good time with some ideas thrown in!

- Trying a new cosplay this year: Moonlight Knight
- Returning with my cosplay from the last 2 years: Veteran Pokemon Trainer
- Contributing to the Dealer's Hall Art Gallery if it returns again

And more of the usual:
- AMV Hell viewings (I have 2 clips in 7!)
- Arcade gaming
- Panel hopping
- Photo taking

Etc, etc, etc...

My favorite part of Fanime is definitely the people-watching! I also really enjoy the food in the area (San Jose is about an hour away from me so I don't go there very often) especially banh mi sandwiches.
It's only my second year cosplaying so I told myself I'd do more posing and smiling in any pictures. I never take selfies or other casual pictures, so I always feel really awkward in photos. @_@
I'm not a big panels person, but I enjoy ones about history or culture so I'm making sure to go to the panel about Osaka.
Finally, I don't really buy any merchandise at Fanime (all my spending is on the hotel and on food) but there was a seller in the Dealer's Hall last year that sells punny rabbit plushies so I might pick up another one this year.
