Title: Fanimaid 2012~
Post by: PyronIkari on December 08, 2011, 10:29:19 PM
Hi guys,

So we're back again this year. Information can be found on the Fanime website

http://www.fanime.com

http://www.fanime.com/exhibits/fanimaid-cafe/tryout-information/

More information coming soon~

LAZY MIKEY SAYS COPYPA IS EASY MODE!

Feel free to leave any questions/comments/suggestions here. Please be mindful if you do though. Things like "You should have a butler cafe" and the such have been asked millions of times already. You can go through previous maid cafe threads to look.

So the 2nd (and last tryout unless something miraculous happens) are
going to be Saturday March 10th at the San Jose Convention at 10am. If
you don't know where this is, you better find out fast, because this
is where FanimeCon is being held. But just in case...

150 West San Carlos Street  San Jose, CA 95110

Specifically the meeting will be in the Hilton 2nd floor lobby.
There's a sitting area right up the stairs, turn right, and it'll be
on your left side.

The first tryouts were awesome and incredibly successful. Had
approximately 30 girls show up. I hope that twice as many girls show
up for the second tryouts!

To copy and paste from last try-outs
What to expect:
The try-outs are roughly like a short course on what a maid cafe is,
what we do at Fanimaid Cafe, and basic training on tasks we expect our
maids to be able to fulfill. Please dress to impress to show off your
personal style, and as it will be at AOD, we are okay with you being
in cosplay during the try-outs if you don't want to change your
clothing. Prepare a pen and a notebook in case you would like to take
notes and answers to any questions you may have.

Please hold any questions regarding hours, uniforms, and what have you
for the try-out, as we usually go over everything you need to know.

Other things to keep in mind.
Please be prompt. This is incredibly super amazingly important.

The meeting/tryouts may last anywhere as long as 4 hours, maybe longer
according to how many girls show up. So once again, please be prompt
and hopefully manage so you'll be able to be there the entire time.

If you attended the first meeting, please do not attend the 2nd
tryout. This confuses me. When I try to organize you, and you apply
twice, I get confused and spend too much time trying to decide if
you're the same girl, or two girls with the same name that look
incredibly similar. I don't like this... I really don't like this. So
I usually stop doing work at that point for a while.

Hope the lot of you show up. This year is going to be an amazing year.
The returning maids are incredibly hype. Staff has been working hard
to get everything ready with lots of new ideas. And a big lot of
awesome girls trying out. This group and a lot of these girls have
become some of the most important people to me. And each year it grows
and only becomes more important. Have fun at the meeting and good
luck.

Sincerely,
Mikey Pham FanimaidCafe Co-Head

Wow. So ever since Fanime staff has posted this less than two days ago. I've gotten nearly 30 emails asking to be added to the mailing list.

While nothing official, it looks like the first tryout will be near mid February, and the 2nd tryout will be in early March. Times/locations and everything else will be mailed out in the mailing list when they're finalized.

Thanks for all the interest in this!

Hiiloo~~~

I signed up for the Fanimaid Tryouts and I would like to ask you something if you don't mind.
Do I still need to pay for registration if I make it through the tryouts?
I just want to make sure so I won't waste my money for paying to register if I can get into Fanime for free.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
Please and thank you.

Yes you do, even if you're accepted as a maid, you have to pay for your badge.

Nope not yet, when one does come out, similar info(but not all of the info) will posted here as well.

As a side note, wow, let's of girls are interested this year. This compromises my original idea of things. Must discuss with staff about how things are going to go for tryouts.

Hey there!  I was wondering if you could tell us what kinds of things to expect at tryouts.  Will they be just interviews, or some sort of practice run?

Edit:
As I was going through a few of the past fanimaid threads, I noticed that both tryouts are usually in San Jose due to convenience of scheduling the venue.  Do you think there will be a San Francisco tryout this year?  Going to SF is more convenient for me during the school year.  Also, are there usually at least 2 meetings in SF?  I realize it may be too soon to be asking these questions, so I apologize if I'm being pushy.

There will be a meeting in SF this year. At current point, there are two tryouts planned, one in SF, and one in SJ. If you haven't got emailed maidcafe at fanime dot com yet to join the mailing list, I suggest doing so now. I'm currently busy with ALA this weekend, but right after, lots of discussion will go on, and emails should go out probably this tuesday about meetings.

What to expect. Meetings are generally, a simple introduction of what is expected, and a short interview to get to know you a little bit.

So many emails about people interested in joining this year... lots of competition.

Happy New Year, girls! Are you excited for FanimeCon 2012?!

Us Fanimaid Cafe staff are working hard to bring us upon a wonderful new year for all you fans, maids, and general attendees to enjoy! We are currently working on setting up to send out official try-out dates to all of you, but unfortunately, they are somewhat late due to some unforeseen circumstances. We ask that everyone could be kind and patient as we try our best to get these dates out to you.

As for veteran maids, we will also be sending out acceptance emails for girls who are invited back to Fanimaid Cafe from the previous year sometime this week. Those who are invited back are not required to attend the try-outs, but are encouraged to stop by and help out our new recruits!

If you wish to try-out, please refer to the general requirements listed on this page: http://www.fanime.com/exhibits/fanimaid-cafe/tryout-information/

If you wish to be put on the Fanimaid 2012 mailing list, please email [email protected] All updates will be archived in posts on this thread, so keep your eyes peeled for updates.

We will be sending out information on the first try-out date within this week, so stay tuned!

Thank you very much for your hard work! ^.^

Uniforms can be purchased anywhere as long as it is approved by staff first. As for dances you need to know or ill be useful? None specifically. Any you want to learn will help overall but none are required.

Haha, I'd try but I'm not girly enough. Cutesy is an understatement with me. If there's any room for the kick-ass girl trying to act not cute, then sure. Otherwise I'd bite my own tongue if I can't play the tough girl who is cute but acts like she isn't. At the VERY least man! Variation and uniqueness~ xD

If we end up volunteering with Fanimaid Cafe, how many hours would we volunteer a day? I want to table with my friend in the Artist Alley too so if I miraculously get to be a part of Fanimaid Cafe, I'd like to know how many hours she'd have to be alone. ;~;

After you are accepted as a maid, you email us the uniform you would like to purchase/design and we tell you whether or not it's approved.

Total is about 10 hours through out the weekend. Roughly 4 1/2 hours sat and sun, and a mandatory meeting that lasts about an hour.

Hoping I can answer your questions,

@Kpmonkeygirl: There are many cheaper costumes on places like Bodyline and Cosmates. Some girls also made their costumes. However there are guidelines on costumes to give it uniformity such as the color (having to be white and black) and such. These things are going to be explained at the meeting so I wouldn't worry about costumes until you're sure that you're in the cafe (you will have plenty of time to order them after you get them approved) so dont worry about it too much~

I was also wondering about the personality issue a little.  Is it encouraged to have a unique personality/attraction-factor (think: tsundere, tomboy, mature, etc.) or is it preferred that we stick to the classic moe ideal?  Sorry if this is something I shouldn't be asking about.

Post by: TiffanyF on January 15, 2012, 09:54:00 PM
Ok, since a few girls want to know, I will write about it on the forum.

First of all, personality, you don't have to be a certain personality but when you're a maid its best to be the classic moe. Its ok to be funny or a little sexy maybe (not too much, note I said a little) and you dont exactly have to fit the "cute" image but I don't recommend tsundere, yandere or anything that is extreme. As a maid, you need to respect the goshujin-sama and ojou-sama, meaning that extreme personalities are usually not good especially if that person has no idea what a maid cafe or maybe those personalities.

The experience, overall is amazing. Its so fun to meet so many new people and the staff are all nice and awesome. The customers are also usually awesome, its very fun to talk to them and play games or just greet them even if you're a shy person. I'm not too good with social situations and serving myself but after a while I got used to the idea and it was fun meeting so many people at the con. Many of the girls from the cafe are now my friends and I could have never met such people without the cafe. There are also many chances of even meeting some of the guests since we are well known and a hot spot, even for guests.

I'm not sure if you guys wanted to know about tryouts as well but its pretty simple, they teach you things you need to know about being a maid: manners, costumes, how to do the serving, greetings, and other things they feel is necessary to keep it an authentic maid cafe. Unlike a lot of the other cons with cafes, I think Fanimaid Cafe is closer to the classic maid cafe except some things that they can't control because the convention center is in control of certain parts of the cafe. For my tryout, after the introduction and explanations, we practiced the greetings and then got interviewed by the staff. They were all nice and friendly and so were my fellow maids as well as the veteran maids. There were 3 tryouts last year and we got the results about March I believe.

Personally one of my favorite things about this cafe is the performance. I like dancing so if you like dancing this might be something you want as well. After a couple of weeks, girls are able to sign up for performances and if they get accepted, they get some time on Stage Zero in the Fanimaid Live. There is a pretty big audience for that show and it is always fun to see some of the audience even doing wotagei. (Wotagei are cheers that fans do to pump up the crowd and the performer) The opening and ending performances are amazing. Since all the girls that are performing get on stage, there is so much energy. If you look it up on youtube you will see how much energy! I'm pretty sure this year's live will be very energetic and fun as well.

In conclusion, I regret not joining Fanimaid right when I turned 16. The cafe has grown so much from when I first visited Fanime in 2008 thanks to our head maid, Jun and of course the Fanimaid staff. I think putting myself in the mail list and challenging myself to tryout was one of the best decisions of my life, and I'm not exaggerating. It can be life changing and you'll probably end up with a lot of pride towards Fanimaids. I can easily say that we are the best cafe in the US even if I haven't visited other cafes. So if you're wondering if you should join that mailing list, definitely join! I am looking forward to the new maids!

Hope this helped!

Yes it did! More than I needed! Thank you very much! ^.^

20... wwwwwwwwwww

You guys would be surprised how old some of the maids actually are(not that I would ever disclose that information). But you make it out to sound like we only want really young girls, like I'm some kind of dirty pedophile.

No discrimination from us, 16 is the age cap due to liability reasons. Age doesn't matter at all otherwise, what we care about are about personality. If you're mature enough to handle the work and be professional, that you'll put in the effort, and that you'll be social and carry the position with pride.

I guess I'll talk a little bit about the cafe as I've been helping run it for the past 4 years. Being in Fanimaid is something to be proud of. Besides the work at the actual cafe, the events, and serving. A lot of the girls make bonds with each other. I don't mean to over play it, but it can be life changing. Many of the maids grew significantly through the cafe and when I look back at when I first met them, to who they are now, it's quite amazing. I myself have made amazing friends through this. Tiffany for example is one of my best friends now. She went from being really shy and (sorry erouto) socially awkward and introverted, to being incredibly open. Not just me, but she's become close friends with a number of the other maids and staff.

Besides that, a number of connections and bridges were made. Branching out and meeting new people, making connections for work, promotion, and interests. While family may not be the exact word I'm looking for, we are definitely something close to that. There are plenty of perks to becoming a maid, even if they're not that obvious unless you're a part of it.

But don't get me wrong. Being a maid is a lot of work. It's tiring, you sacrifice time at the convention, you have to be incredibly diligent and observant. It's not something to take lightly nor assume will be nothing but fun. But I'm sure the large majority of the girls will tell you that it's definitely worth it.

But here's some fun incentive. A few of the maids got to present gifts to the Guest of Honors last year. They got to meet and talk to FLOW, Yuya, Momoi, and the other guests. Yokota san actually ended up hanging out with the maids for a little while and talked with a bunch of us when we were off duty (and kissed me lololololololol). We ask the girls for a lot. To work hard and be professional. But we definitely take care of them, because we care about the maids quite a bit. As I said, we're almost like a family. I should actually get some of the maids to post here and talk about their experiences as a maid and what it means to them.

So, I was a Fanimaid last year!!

I heard about it from a friend, and I was really nervous to join. I was curious, so I decided to just do my best at the auditions and hope for a good outcome. The veteran maids were all really nice, and even the newbies like me were bonding already. Once I got in I was really excited!! I did have some reservations, though. I thought it was too late for me since I was joining when I was 21, but everyone was quick to reassure me that it was okay. I also thought I was a bit too heavyset, but the girls are all very supportive. I just had to be careful with my measurements when I was ordering my uniform!! Plus we're a pretty open bunch of people, so we're a source of support when I worry about these things.

Interacting with the goshujin-sama and the ojou-sama is a lot of fun, since for many people it's their first time at a maid cafe. They don't really know what to expect, and often have lots of questions about what we are and what we do. Sometimes they're really quiet, and they don't ask questions, but if you ask them about anime or video games they really open up! I like it when they're really playful, though. I had a lot of fun playing whack-a-mole and headbands with my patrons. I like drawing, so it was fun to take mini-commissions; its like they get a little keepsake, too! The way I see it, patrons are there to see the maids, so it's our duty to entertain them to the best of our abilities. Fanimaid teaches you a bit about keeping patrons happy while maintaining a professional (and moe) attitude, as well as exercising social skills; I got a lot better at making small talk with people post-con, hahaha.

Dancing for Fanimaid Live was really fun too; the energy of audience and my fellow maids helps us all get HYPE! Getting together with all the girls really helped us bond before con. Walking around Fanime in my maid uniform was exciting too, since many con attendees know that Fanimaid is there but not everyone gets to participate. It makes me feel very proud to be able to tell people to come visit the cafe!

If you have any reservations about joining, the best I can tell you is to just go for it!! Fanimaid has been a very positive and exciting experience for me, and I would highly recommend trying out!

*being a good little maid and doing what mikey says*

hi everyone :D so uh i did maid cafe last year under the name of Sakana and lawl i was actually one of the maids that got to present stuff to FLOW and meet them and stuff and according to mikey or was it mizuki ._. apparently flow wanted my contact information so they could go drinking with me or something BUT SOMEONE AHEMMIKEY didnt give it to them QQ but i hope thats a little motivation for newcomers who are considering doing maid cafe to actually try out for it :D YOU GET TO BREATH IN JAP CELEBRITY AIR OK LOL. But ya uh.. Maid cafe is actually really fun and like tiffany said, you dont have to act cute or sexy or whatever. Just be yourself <3 and be prepared to have like 50 million pictures taken of you cause chances are you'll be pulled aside for the group pictures that people take after their visit to the cafe. I know some of you are also wondering about the tryouts. To be honest, i was kind of nervous before my tryouts but the thing is, you go and you meet people and make friends and stuff and then you learn some phrases and how you should act and them you talk to the staff and be like HEY SUP THIS IS HOW I SAY GOSHUJIN SAMA and some other stuff and its all good and then you wait for your email LOL. Its not that scary :D trust meeeeeee. Overall though, i love maid cafe xD its alot of fun and you meet alot of people but chances are you may miss the saturday concert if you sit around for too long after your shift is over. Oh and you wont really get to do much on saturday and sunday cause of the shift hours (if you decide to do all of them like i did) but time flies and maid cafe/fanime will be over before you know it :(. During cafe hours the staff is extremely lenient and flexible with whatever you need to do like go to the bathroom or take a break cause your feet hurt like hell for standing for x many hours (just dont wear heels ._.) and theyll even let you go get food and stuff so dont worry about being starved to death lol. Im typing this on my itouch at 2 am so im not aure of anything flows but if anyone has questions im free to answer them <3

I don't understand what you mean exactly by compromise. How it works is, generally there's 3 shifts morning, early afternoon, late afternoon to closing. In addition, it is mandatory for all maids to be working during fanimaid live(either as part of the live, or in the cafe during the live). Most of the time, the girls choose their shift and that's that. If you're asking if you can do a half shift or work separate hours through out the day inbetween things, chances are, probably not. Fluctuating schedules and giving girls special choices in when they work like that is unfair to the rest of the girls.

So if you are okay with picking your shifts, during times you aren't going to be at a gathering, that's fine, but if they do overlap with a gathering, unfortunately I can't allow you to disappear for an hour or so during your scheduled shift then return and work an hour later. So it's up to you. I can't really tell you if it's a good idea or not, because I don't know your schedule and how it'll work.

Personally another maid and I managed to cram in a gathering between practicing our dances for the Live and our shifts at the cafe; essentially we were rushing between casual to cosplay to maid uniform. It was really hectic on Saturday because that's when my important gatherings were, but I just decided to go to gatherings that weren't during my shift. I suppose if you're committed to so many gatherings, shifts might pose a problem for you.

The way I see it, working Fanimaid is a cosplay event in of itself; you get to get dolled up and put together an ensemble and personify another role. I usually end up meeting patrons that like things that I like, just as if I were at a gathering anyway. I hope this provides some sort of cosplay/maid insight!

I was a fanimaid last year and it was my first time.  I had an excellent experience!  I got to make new friends, learn dance routines for the live performance, and of course the excuse to dress up in a cute maid outfit.  The Fanimaid experience will be what you make of it.  You can go all out participating in the quiz academy and live performances.  You can take this chance to meet fellow con goers and even make friends from there.  What appealed to me the most was the "family" aspect of Fanimaid.  Even when Fanime is over and we take our separate ways, we still keep in touch creating a lasting friendship.  Everyone works hard and supports each other to bring in the culture of Maid Cafes to the US.  In addition the Fanimaid staff is very vigilant about the security of their maids so rest assured that you'd be volunteering in a safe environment.

Thanks for all the supportive testimonials, girls!

To answer some of the questions in this thread, I will first address uniforms. Uniforms are discussed at the try-outs, and approvals are discussed after recruits have passed. From then on, recruits send in their designs/product images to be approved by staff, after the uniforms they've chosen meet our requirements and are considered tasteful.

For personality, at Fanimaid Cafe, we try to keep it mostly a classic moe-kei type scene, as many attendees have never been to a cafe or are unfamiliar with different character-types, Fanimaid Cafe mostly offers the experience as an introduction to what a maid cafe is. However! Many of our girls vary in personality. We've got a very diverse group here. And since our environment at Fanimaid Cafe is a little more chill than what a commercial maid cafe is, here in America, many of our patrons and fellow maids encourage you to let your own personality shine when working with us.

And as for age... 20 is in no way old! XD

Hope that helps!

If 20 is old then I'll be past my prime this year.

As for experience from the past, this will be my fourth year as a part of Fanimaid Cafe, and it's probably one of the best and personally my favorite experiences at Fanime. Every year I meet great people, and our family just seems to grow more and more as we accept more girls in the group.

The first year was very interesting. I remember when I went to tryouts, I was a little uncertain as to whether or not I would make it, but the best thing to do is to be confident in yourself and to be honest when you're being interviewed. I've been on staff for a year now, and I helped conduct interviews last year, and most of the girls that made it appealed to me because they were just being honest with themselves and me (Tiff I think I had interviewed you actually).

At the tryouts though, what I most encourage you girls do is talk too each other, not just with friends you may be going with. Because if you end up passing the tryouts, you're going to be working together for all of Fanime weekend, and we don't want it to be awkward or uncomfortable for you if you choose to not open up to new girls. After all, this position does require you to talk to strangers at the cafe.

Overall, this is really fun and a great environment to work out in. If you guys have any questions too, you always have someone to go to.

I was a fanimaid last year too! It was my first time volunteering last year. I was super nervous about trying out, but the girls and staff are all really nice and helpful. They'll make you feel pretty welcome, so don't be afraid to talk to others and make friends if you go to tryouts! I was a bit intimidated at first because I didn't know anyone else that was trying out, but that quickly changed and I ended up making a bunch of friends. You'll get to know them better through just hanging out, working together, and things like performance practices if you decide you want to participate in Fanimaid Live. Not to mention if you ever feel a bit lost in regards to anything, you can ask someone else and they'll be willing to help you out.

I was 19 when I tried out, so don't worry about being too old!

As for working in the cafe itself, its really fun! You get to talk to a bunch of different people as well as play games with them. It opens your eyes to the people that go to this convention. I think my favorite table was a really sweet couple from Poland. All around it was really fun and the goshujin-sama are really nice and understanding. I won't lie, it was a lot of work, but it was also really rewarding. Just come prepared to work hard and have fun and you should be good! :)

As long as you schedule the gatherings around your shifts it shouldn't be a problem I think, though you might not be able to make all of them depending when they're scheduled for. However, if you're planning elaborate costumes that takes some time to get changed into, you might run into a bit of trouble if you don't leave enough time to change/get to the gathering/etc. I had a shift that ended about a half hour before the Madoka gathering last year, but it took forever to get changed and I ended up missing it and catching it as everyone was leaving.

...Oh yeah. Make sure you have somewhere to get changed and/or store your costume if you plan on a gathering soon before or after your shift. Sure, theres the bathroom, but depending on the costume it can be a bit of a pain. Plus you're gonna have to carry the costume or your maid outfit if you don't have anywhere to store it after too. Derp. .___.;

Hi~
My name is Scarlet and this will be my 3rd year as a fanimaid. Fanimaid has been a great experience for me these past years, and it's something I would have definitely regretted not signing up for. I've made so many friends and it's just amazing to do fanimaid live and have fun with the maids with Haruko Momoi concerts and other events. (I would be lying if I said that I wasn't influenced to join just a bit because of the great relationship between fanimaid cafe and Momoi)

The staff is great and makes sure everything is in order and the maids are great and give moe~ vibes off. It's a pleasant atmosphere to be in. You get to talk to con goers AND make friends with fellow maids! (SOCIAL LINKS) Although it's very fun, it's important to be respectful to our goshujin-sama and ojou-sama!

We have a lot of new girls every year and I'd say that all of us are really friendly, so don't be shy! We had pretty much a mandatory/practice meeting for fanimaid live on thursday or the con (or was it friday? ww) last year, and so you get to know some people from tryouts and meet even more new people at the con before we actually work together! If you have any questions you can always ask staff. I definitely encourage anyone interested to try out!

Actually I feel like 20 is the average age in the cafe!  Only a handful of girls are still in their teens.

This will be my fourth year in the cafe and second year staffing for it, and like all the other girls, I would say that it is definitely my favorite part of Fanime.

When I first tried out, I think it was the first or second try out that year, and Jun's first year as head, and what we go over pretty much hasn't changed.  I heard about it from a friend who knew Jun and we went together to the tryout, and the three of us hung out afterwards.  I guess I had an unfair disadvantage from that :P but I was still nervous about the whole thing, and intimidated by the others that were there. And I remembered Jun assured me that she would judged me equally as I expressed to her that I felt bad, feeling like I was sucking up to her.  But after getting to meet and know everybody I can see that we were all going get along and become friends!

My first time going to Fanime was also when I first did maid cafe.  So even though I didn't get to experience Fanime as a normal con-goer, I experienced it through all my goshujinsama and ojousama, which I feel is even more fun because I get to hear about it through personal experiences.  And it makes me glad to add to their experience by being their maid at the cafe.  I'm not going to say being a maid is easy work, but it's definitely fun, which makes all the hard stuff feel easier.  I'm used to be a shy and quiet person (still am sometimes), but I found it very easy to talk to everybody, both maids and the patrons.  This definitely helped me to become more sociable and confident around people.  And I know a lot of girls have different personalities and are worried about being moe, but I found that being yourself and feeling comfortable already gives off moe vibes, as I think all the girls are cute in their own way.

As I said before, these girls have definitely become good friends of mine, we are all so close! And we definitely welcome new girls with the same enthusiam we have for each other and for the cafe.  Every year we make new friends!  Fanimaid cafe is growing bigger and better every year, and it makes me happy to be a part of it for so long.

Good Luck to all and I hope to see lots of new faces~

I've been a fanimaid for two years, and it really is one of the highlights of my Fanime experience. As many other maids have said before, meeting random people is slighty scary (and at the same time quite a pleasant thrill). Even though I had public speaking experience as well as memories of being a maid before, I was still very nervous when interacting with the customers last year.  I still have no idea about how to carry on a conversation. This is completely normal. You don't have to act specially or cater to some sort of specific personality. Just be yourself, and conversation will figure itself out. In fact, many of the customers are happy to do a lot of the talking, and just appreciate a listening ear! There are quite a few customers I've met who were content to just talk and forgo the mini-games altogether haha.

Ditto on what some have stated before, about staying professional but sweet. No need to take it over the top if you don't feel comfortable with it or if you feel it isn't in your character to do so. It really is true that many customers have never heard of a maid cafe. I remember a few instances where people came to just get food, and were surprised when the maid were not just waitresses, but would also keep company. It's also not just young anime fans who eat at the cafe. Some examples of customers I've served:

-Guys who work in Silicon Valley who came for the day and have little to no idea about what anime is.
-Couples with small children
-Parents tagging along with their kids, who grew up watching very old anime.
-Parents who speak little to no English

So, kind of a funny story with that last example. I asked if the girl would like to add extra moe by doing a cute chant with me over her soda (like I've seen done on youtube), and the mom looked at me like I'd just suggested spiking her daughter's drink with drugs. Ahahaha. No matter what happens, even if you end up derping, just remain calm and patient. The other girls and veteran maids are always around if you have any questions or need any help.

Best of luck,
Ling

If we end up volunteering with Fanimaid Cafe, how many hours would we volunteer a day? I want to table with my friend in the Artist Alley too so if I miraculously get to be a part of Fanimaid Cafe, I'd like to know how many hours she'd have to be alone. ;~;

Total is about 10 hours through out the weekend. Roughly 4 1/2 hours sat and sun, and a mandatory meeting that lasts about an hour.

Ah, I see! Thanks(:
Is it like a continuous shift for 4 1/2 straight hours a day? Or is it spread out throughout the day?

One shift is 3 1/2 hours plus the required 1 hour of work during Fanimaid☆Live (either working the cafe or performing on Stage Zero).  You choose what 3.5 hour block you want to work during the day.

Oh okay! I'm really sorry for so many questions LOL. But these are my last ones. > o<
What time do the earliest shifts start? Because if I did it, I'd prefer to do the earliest one so I could still table with my friend in the afternoon. ; o;

And, for the tryouts, will they be like mid February or so? Because at the end of February, I have a full week retreat I'm going to. ; o;

There will be multiple tryouts, so don't worry about that. As for earliest shift, IF IF IF IF the schedule is the same as last year, Cafe opens at 11am which means shift would be 10:45 -> 2:15or something like that.

Edit: These aren't absolute or exact, but it's just to give you a rough idea.

Hey lovely ladies,

Get ready, because we're about to begin the new year with our first annual try-outs! This year, we will be holding our try-outs in two locations. The first one will take place in San Francisco Japantown during AOD 2012, and the rest will be held at the SJCC where FanimeCon is held.

Our first meeting will be on February 18th, 2012 at promptly 10:00am during AOD. It is very important that you show up on time, as we will not repeat any of the information that we offer during the try-out, and it is asked that you choose to go to only one try-out, as attending more than one will not aid in our decision for new recruits.

It will take place in the court-yard in front of Shabu-sen. Here is the address.

1726 Buchanan St
(between Post St & Sutter St)
San Francisco, CA 94115

What to expect:
The try-outs are roughly like a short course on what a maid cafe is, what we do at Fanimaid Cafe, and basic training on tasks we expect our maids to be able to fulfill. Please dress to impress to show off your personal style, and as it will be at AOD, we are okay with you being in cosplay during the try-outs if you don't want to change your clothing. Prepare a pen and a notebook in case you would like to take notes and answers to any questions you may have.

Please hold any questions regarding hours, uniforms, and what have you for the try-out, as we usually go over everything you need to know. We will release more try-out dates scheduled for March as we go, so keep your eyes peeled!

As for veteran maids, please expect emails regarding your invitations back to Fanimaid Cafe 2012 sometime this week. Not all maids will be invited back this year, as our roster has become much larger than it had been the previous years, and we want to be able to give everyone a fair chance. But everyone is welcome to try-out again if they wish to do so.

Good luck, everyone! We at Fanimaid Cafe are very excited to get to know our new additions to our Fanimaid Cafe family. Please don't be shy to make friends and ask us questions, as we have a very friendly and supportive environment for our girls, and many of us have build lasting friendships from our experience at Fanimaid.

Much love,
Your Fanimaid Cafe Head, Jun

Sorry guys! I forgot to mention, the try-out will end at approximately 12:45, in case any of you need to schedule around this.

And again, good luck!

Thanks! :D

If we were to attend the try-out at AOD, we wouldn't have to buy a badge, right? It's just in the same location?
I'm pretty excited and nervous for try-outs ahhhhh > u<

No badge needed, as the meeting venue is outside.  So dress for the weather!

No reason to be nervous. Just be yourself. None of us are exactly intimidating.

Some things to keep in mind. If you're not going to be cosplaying for aod, I suggest dressing your style. Not dressing up or going all out, but really show us who you are. Also speak well and coherently. Sentences are always better than one word answers and responses. We want to know more about you than an answer to some questions.

Best of luck, see you next month.

I remember when I first tried out, I was in jeans and a sweater and I looked really crappy because I had to wake up super early. So I'm glad my glasses worked to my advantage.

Also yeah, when answering questions, think them through well and try not to make up answers to impress us. Like it's been said many times before, just be honest with us and yourself and you'll be fine.

The best advice I can give for the tryouts is to not overthink the tryouts. It usually ends up being a lot less stressful than girls make it out to be.

The San jose tryout will be some time in march. The date of the 18th is the San Francisco tryouts only. So if you go to the sjcc no one will be there.

Vanillashakes: not that it's that different than your norm. Remove the sweater, tank top, and librarian status is go!

hihi :3
Sorry for jumping in here :x
I just kinda have another question about the try outs.
「(^ヘ^; ) え〜と

If we go to the SF try out....do we also need to go to the SJ try out as well?
Because i was reading through all the posts, to see if this question has been asked, so i wouldn't need to ask it.
but since i didn't see it...i was kind of wondering about it.

I'm currently living in Santa Cruz for school at the moment, so the SJ try outs would be easier for me to go to....but depending on my school schedule i might not be able to make it to the first try outs, though i will do my best to make sure i can go to the one in SF.

So my main question is, "Are both of the try out days optional or are they mandatory?" or, "Do we need to make both of them?".
Also, "What happens if we get lost going to the try out/meeting area?" I have a tendency to get lost very easily in new areas that i am not use to. (T^T)

Sorry about this semi-long post

Typically it's mandatory to just attend one of the try-out dates that are listed if you're planning to try out. You are more than welcome to attend others, but we just have them at different dates to make it convenient in case you are unable to attend another date. If you want to attend the try-outs in San Jose, I would suggest doing that if it's much easier for me (I  used to live in Santa Cruz, so I know what you're saying.) Short answer: Going to both is optional.

As far as getting lost goes, it'd probably be best to get there earlier if you think you're going to get lost, but chances are you'll end up seeing other girls heading in a specific direction. Usually we try to make the meet-up area in a pretty reachable and easier place, and being on time is definitely preferred other than being late. If you're uncertain that you'll make it on time, you should let Mikey know  in advance about it. He and Jun probably can answer it a little more in depth too if my answers are too vague.

It's actually preferable if you do not attend multiple tryouts. When you attend multiple tryouts your name gets listed twice and we have to figuire out if it's two people with the same name or if it's the same person. So one tryout only please ^^.

As for getting lost, I understand this happens sometimes. Before tryouts I generally send out my cellphone number just in case. If you are coming and need some time just text me and I'll note it down and will give you a recap of what you may have missed after the meeting(note showing up late looks bad just like in any tryout or interview). But again, we understand these things may happen. Also keep in mind we are on a schedule, so I may not be able to recap for you if the meeting time goes too long/there are a lot of girls. So please try your very best to be on time.

TRYOUTS on FEB- 18th. As posted. Tryouts will be taking place on Feb 18th in Japantown.

As an addendum to this:

IF IT IS RAINING THIS DAY, WE WILL BE MOVING THE TRY OUT LOCATION.

Due to unknown weather conditions I wanted to put a precautionary. If weather seems to deem not happy and it is raining on this day, I won't subject you to sit outside in the rain. If it happens to be raining this day, we will meet up in the main mall area on the first floor. To specify, If you exit Ichiban Kan through the mall entrance, you'll be on the second floor. If you look down you'll see the bridge thing with stairs going to the second floor. Staff will be at the benches in that area.

::::REMINDER THIS IS ONLY IF IT IS RAINING. IF IT IS NOT RAINING, WE WILL STILL MEET OUTSIDE OF SHABUSEN:::::

I hope it doesn't rain.

You don't get a free badge for being selected. To get reimbursed for a badge you have to sign up as a volunteer and complete I believe 20 hours over the course of the convention. Unless you work every single minute the cafe is open, you won't qualify. What you can do is volunteer at the cafe, and volunteer other departments over the course of the convention to qualify for a reimbursement.

You could also work with a panel. I may be mistaken, but if the panel is 3 hours total, then it gets fully reimbursed. But 1 or 2 is only a certain percentage.

Ah ok, I'm just wondering because I'm planning on volunteering at the cafe for at least half the time they are open. So that means that I would need to purchase the ticket first right?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but will the reimbursements be in cash, considered by a set price of $x per hour? Because full weekend prices will flux so would I be right to assume that Fanimaid staff has a set price of $ per hour?

It's all or nothing--You work all the required hours (20?) and you get back what you paid originally. If you don't make the required hours, you don't get anything--other than the feeling of a job well done. :)

You will not get any partial reimbursements for your badge. You will need to work the full required time which you would have to volunteer somewhere else as well (no matter how much you work at Fanimaid Cafe, it is impossible to get all the hours from there) to get your badge fully reimbursed.

Small correction after math. You can qualify for a badge just working the cafe, but it's not exactly easy. You have to work from setup to clean up both days (with only breaks you can't take a lunch or anything like that) as well as do the after work(post clean up) Sunday night. It's doable but incredibly hard. You'll be putting in as much time as staff does basically on those two days.

In case people don't realize I changed the front page... COPYPA~

(408) 792-4194

How long did tryouts take last time? I think I heard somewhere they lasted until 2-3PM because of all the participants? :x I have an event I need to go to at 1PM in Santa Clara so I'm really hoping I can make it in time. If it's not possible, I'll just have to blow it off and wait for it next year. Maid tryouts >everything else

If I were you, I will try my best to be the first one there, so that they would interview you first, so that you could then go where you need to go.

Usually it shouldn't take too long but due to the amount of girls, it might take longer.

It might be better to tell staff before you sign up for a number for interviews.

It was around 12-1pmish that we started last tryouts for interviews. If you need, let any of the staff know beforehand that you need to go early, and they'll give you the sign up sheet first so you can get interviewed sooner

I was one of the first people to arrive at the SF tryouts, but was one of the last to be interviewed. :(  I was actually pretty tired at the end, because the interviews did take a long time (not the individual interviews, but the whole process itself including a long wait time), so I don't think I did so well.  I think I was too shy to jump in and ask to be interviewed earlier.  It's probably a good idea to try to get interviewed earlier if you can, while you're still full of energy.  Good luck, minna!

Yeah, I know what you mean. And I was nervous, because I had friends waiting for me. >.< I hope we ALL get to be maids!

Pardon me, I am sorry if I am a bother, but may I ask a question? When you guys pick people to be part of the maid cafe, for those who you will not have, will you be sending a letter saying something like; "We are sorry we could not pick you..." and so on? Or do you just not notify them?
Please don't feel the need to answer! >.<

No need to bring a resume at all. What we do recommend you bring though is a notebook or something to take notes with, because although these are tryouts and interviews, a majority of the time is spent as an overview as to what we are and what we do.

As for notifications on if you don't pass, we will be sending out a mass email to everyone saying if you didn't receive the acceptance letter, then we apologize and encourage you to try again next year!

I'm going to unsticky this post for the time being. It'll get naturally bumped when results are posted (if they are posted here). Good luck, everyone!

Thanks for being so patient girls! I know I said that we would probably be sending out emails last week, but due to busy schedules and coordinating a bunch of things it got pushed back. Rest assured that emails will be sent out in the upcoming days though! Looking forward to hear back from you!

A follow-up e-mail has just been sent out to all the girls that tried out this year.

Congratulations for the girls that got in!

There were so many girls that tried out this year, so for the girls that didn't get in, remember that this isn't personal (in fact it was a lot of competition, more than previous years I think) and you are welcome to try again next year.

Hopefully more info and introductions and such will be sent out soon. I'm very very very excited to see the new girls this year and meet them. I'm also super excited for performances and what people want to do.
