You people talking about going to Anime Expo makes me even more depressed, I have zero money and no one to share a room with to get down there. >:C
think of it this way, atleast your saving your money and not supporting a corrupted shitty con :DD
Seriously. I ditched Anime Expo in favor of Fanime for my annual major con trip, and I live within driving distance of AX!

As someone who's never been to AX, what's so corrupt about it?

BunofGovt

Trying to catch up on sleep, and getting mentally ready for a work trip next week.  I'm planning out my cosplay for next year, figuring out where I am with my current manga series and anime series.   I hadn't planned on attending any cons the rest of the year except for Kinyobi Con anyway.
Life is too important to take seriously.  Seriously.

Honestly, it's kinda gotta way too big and too corporate. It's lost a LOT of the fan-driven edge it had 10, 15 years ago. Plus since they got both the Anaheim and Long Beach convention centers booked out from under them and they've been at the LA convention center... that's just not really the best venue, IMO. Sure, the area right there has been gentrified a lot, but there's not really sufficient on-site affordable hotel space and once you get a block or so away that area is kinda... crappy.

And people at Fanime complain about 'line con', the year after I stopped going to AX, my sister and her husband reported a massive reg line screwup that had them waiting for upwards of 9 hours in a line over a mile long winding outside the convention center in 90+ degree heat due to shoddy organization. Last I heard, AX has cleaned up badge pick-up somewhat, but that left a really bad taste in their mouths.

I've only heard bits and pieces of the various AX behind-the-scenes dramas, so I can't offer much in the way of intelligent commentary on the alleged corruption, but mostly from my own experience it feels less like a fan event and more like a corporate one. My first year at Fanime (2011) still had that fan event atmosphere; it honestly reminded me overall of my first Anime Expo (1999) in terms of the overall atmosphere. And that's what's kept my sis, her hubby and myself opting to make the 6-8 hour drive to Fanime instead of the hour it takes to get to Anime Expo.

I used to go to a lot of cons since my first Fanime back in '07, but things got expensive and my last trip to AX in 2010 was a bust. So Fanime has been the only con I go to each year since then. I cope pretty well surprisingly, since I can shift my focus onto potential cosplays for the next year, work, school, whatever else is happening in my life at the time. I guess my PCD became manageable after 2010 I believe, since I was getting older and had to shift focus onto other, more important things.

People that never been always say its shitty when in fact its a very great con. Take a look at the guest line ups and they have guest Fanime only dreams of, and a great program schedule that makes you plan out your day down to the minute. As far as corruption well that didn't seem to affect the last 3 years of a great convention. And besides EVERY con has its dirty little secrets imagine how shock you'll be if you knew all of Fanime's dirty laundry.

That's the problem, a lot of people just "hear" about it, if no one was actually there how can you sit and type as an even that actually happen.

Last years pre-reg line was long but it was moving smoothly. I know I was there. I cheek in to my hotel around 3:00 and was having drinks at a bar by 6:30.

While the location of AX is debatable, I have never had a problem with going back and forth to my hotel with the shuttle buses, well after 3:00 am it is an hour wait, but that's understandable. Good thing I could take a taxi anytime I want.

Either way what it comes down to it is another anime convention which means more money to spend/plan. Those that have the means are always envious of those that don't. The end result will always be the same. It either would be awesome, a total let down, or a bit of both.

Not your typical anime junkie.

Its usually the last weekend of May. It hasn't always been at the SJCC but for the foreseeable future, it will be.

^sounds good.

I'm sorting through the photos I took this year. Not many, but in need of organizing.
Of course, like the other years I've gone, I'm listening to the MusicFest set list playlist I made on iTunes.

You should totally post that set list!!

Cons in general? Usually by ear or from AnimeNewsNetwork.

My upcoming con schedule includes Anime Expo, Kintoki Con, and Japan Expo.

I would someday like to check out AM2 but they're always getting shafted.
Must be an SPJA conspiracy lol.

I go to www.animecons.com.  You can search for upcoming conventions by date view their map and search by location.

That sounds awesome.  I want to go even more now.  (Never been, but they do have an impressive guest list.  Porno Graffiti this year?!?!)

Corporate doesn't necessarily equal corrupt.

Injecting some corporate sensibility into Fanime would do it good, in my opinion.
