I need to know in advance about how much money I'll spend on extra sdtuff cause I have to take a long trip to get to california, so abou thow much did you spend on extra items, like plushies, book, DVD's, shirts, etc.? Thanks alot for your guys help!
I set around $250-300, but not all of it goes to the Dealers Room; I use some to tip hotel staff, cash-only food purchases, arcade gaming room, and instant emergencies.

Saving about $200 minimum just *for* dealer's room is a safe bet. Depends on what you're really looking for though, since merchandise can cost anywhere from $10 to $100+. The serious collectors are more likely to spend $50-$80+ per item, from what I noticed...
I usually take $500-$1,000, but this would also include my cost for the hotel. I usually only spend about $300 in the dealers room. Plus you have to think of Food...me personally I CANNOT live off instant ramen and pocky, but hey that is just me! I would have heartburn for a year with all that sodium..LOL
It depends on how much you are planning on buying. If I buy a -lot- one year, I'll spend about $50, maybe a little more. Usually I spend less. I hardly buy anything, though.
I would bring $100-$200 if i was you last year I found a dealer that was selling Armitage cels and he did not know what they were so i got like 8 for $5 each so even if you don't think you will need it. Bring more money for the things you don't know that you need yet ;)
What I do is make a want list. Few question to ask yourself is: What type of items do you buy? (ie figures, wallscroll, dvd etc), How often do you buy these items? (weekly, monthly, preorder), Are there any items you missed and you are looking for? If so, how much are you willing to pay for each item at fanime.
Last year, I took $500 with me for purchases, but I spent about $100. One of my friends spent about $120 and the other spent about $40. Their were a lot of tempting items, but somehow we fought it off. This year, probably a different story.
I would suggest $200 for the Dealers Room, and $100 for Swap Meet. Gives you enough options to splurge on stuff while not being a huge strain on your wallet.
How much I plan to take however. About $500-800, after Hotel Room and Badge. I really do enjoy spending money in mass =P. That after total includes other expenses such as gas ($20 big deal =P) and food (Subway FTW), as well as any other expenses that might arise. I make sure to keep at least $100 for Monday in case something unexpected happens. If not I will dump it all in the dealers room and starve myself on Monday.
Thanks alot guys! ;D
Ticket, hotel, food money, arcade, booze (lol), I usually spend $500 or so
I don't buy too many things in the dealers room unless its something I really want
Bring money is one thing but bringing smaller bills is just as important, esp. in the Swap Meet. I actually go to the bank and ask for 10's and 5's instead of larger bills and use it when in the Swap Meet, so many times they don't have enough bill to break and plus bring a couple of bags, just as important as money. ^_^;
I always set aside $100 for each day of the con counting Friday (but not Monday- I only use that for prereg anyway) so around $300+ for me. But, I always end up running out of money and wanting to spend more... so I suggest you bring $400-500 to spend and hopefully you wont go over like me >.<
Also, I suggest you look at the Swap Meet and Artist Ally before going into the Dealer's Room. They are way cheaper and normally have a lot of cool stuff.
I've got about $500 in war funds at the moment- will be making $50 more on Day Zero from a friend, and I've got about $100 worth of items I'm trying to sell before the con. If I'm successful, I'll probably walk in there with around $650- all of which will be split up between the Swap Meet and Dealer's Hall. I spend about 50%-70% of my funds on the swap meet, and the other 30% between the Dealer's Hall and Artist Alley. Last year I found an incredibly amazing amount of good deals at the Swap Meets.
Just depends on you really- are you an extreme otaku or just a fan who wants to come home with a few goodies? I think bringing at least $200-$300 will ensure you a good time.
Set with $600. Half of that if going towards tripling my Manga collection. Still I'll have more cash to spend at the Swap Meet / Dealer's Room then I had total last year, which 1/3 went to Manga. In other words I'll come out with a lot of swag =P
Would have more if some lazy **** had a job and could pay for himself. Oh well I'm forcing him to go anyway...
about 500 for me this includes hotel and food.
BUT this year my budget is 1,400 because I'm organizing the hotel this time around and I'm going to be in the artist alley.
I'll be bringing about $10,000. Just for food.
Sadly, I'm of the age where I have the money, but don't want to part with it. I may spend $100-$200 in the dealer's room. A good chunk of that will probably be FanimeCon stuff - staff, attendee, and MusicFest t-shirts. ;D

Fat con chair is fat :V
But anyways, $100 for food, $80 for hotel and $300 for dealer's/swap meet.
Would be a lot more if I didn't have to go to AX as well...~_~;
I'll try to stick to a $400 budget. >.>;
That's for buying merch and food. Good thing is I already have about $20 in quarters for the Arcade Room.

I usually spend about $50-$80 at the Dealer's Room. Why so little? I make regular trips to San Francisco's Japantown, where they have almost everything I could ever want. Plus, I tend to not buy very much in life anyway. Do I really need this item? Can I live without it?

YES, YOU REALLY NEED THESE ITEMS AND YOU CAN'T LIVE W/O IT. YOU NEED TO SPEND ALL YOUR MONEY IN DEALERS TO MAKE THEM HAPPY!

hmm, this will be first time attending Fanime and the dealer's hall, I will be bringing about $600 for food and merch items for the swap and dealer's hall. Any tips that you may have for a newbie who is prone to become a shopaholic? (especially with the Bleach stuff, god I love Bleach merch, lol)

Check out the Thursday Day Zero Swap Meet if you can go and the Friday Day one Swap meets. Both are scheduled for 8pm to 1am. You can find budget priced, mint conditioned and rare stuff that you cannot find in the dealers room, especially if you are the type looking for the latest anime imported merchandise from Japan. Also found domestic out of print stuff there like the 1st print of the Kodocha box set for 20 bucks factory sealed for example. Please do not fall for impulse buying when you are at the dealers room. Go for the rare hard to find stuff on the first two days of the dealers room then the easy to find stuff on the last two days. On the last day of the dealers room, two to three hours before it shuts down for good, some dealers will lower their prices to clear out some leftovers and you can bargain with some.
Again rare stuff first then easy to find stuff last. This is a tip I give to anime convention shoppers. Good luck at Fanime and manage your hard earned money wisely. This is coming from a soon to be 11th year Fanime con Attendee Veteran. Hope this helps.
Oh when swap meet starts, we are no longer friends Jason! We will be at WAR! Wahahah!.. :3
I see what you did there Lord Kefka. I guess I will make sure you do not make it to your next Fanime Con LOL.
Tip:
cover his door and windows in cement and cut off any connection to the outside. Make sure he lacks a cell phone. Then Victory will be yours.

Thank you, those are good tips, especially the one about finding rare stuff first, didn't thought about that.
i'm cheap.
MAX $100
for food, swap meet, and dealer room.
i will be bringing bunch of snacks to reduce my food expense. Will hit swap meet on tomorrow first before dealer room on friday.
The most I've ever spent at the dealers' room was $40. I can't afford to spend much more than that but if you have the means, it might be better to bring more money. It depends on what you want to buy and what your priorities are.
I'm hoping to only spend about $100-200. I think I've bout everything that I want from fanime. O.O I just want a few boxsets, posters/scrolls, maybe a bag, and art. And a character sword to add to my collection. ^^
I usually only want to buy Totoro stuff and max 2 plushies and other small things that catch my eye, so $100. Though this year it may be $150 because of a certain plushie-thing I may want to purchaseeee... *_*
Last year was my first fanime so I only spent about $100, this year I'm planning to bring about the same but hopefully more. I'm scouting prices out online for things I want as well to see which would be cheaper and making sure I don't get ripped off for something. I'm hoping to find some Yu Yu Hakusho merch this year, but I'm wondering if because the anime is from the 90's that merch might be harder to find? Or even more expensive?
Sometimes you can get really lucky though. Last year I got a Clannad figure half off cause the box was dented and a bit beat up, so I guess no major collectors wanted to buy them. I don't keep them in the boxes anyways, so it was no loss to me XD
I only spend maybe $100, but don't forget artist's alley! That place eats up a lot of my money because I think, "I may never find this any place else!" Of course I am always happy with my purchases!
I've found that if you wait until the last few hours on Monday, you can sometimes haggle down the price on certain goods by quite a bit. This works best if there are lots of other dealers with the same item. If you can get two dealers to compete against each other for your business, you can save quite a bit. Of course, some dealers will give you a really nasty glare when you try to haggle but don't let that discourage you from trying again at a different booth.
Also, I'm shocked how many people seem to only bring $100 spending cash to the con. Of course, that's probably because I approach conventions with a "go big or go home" kind of attitude that seems to lend itself well to spending more cash than I should in the dealer's hall.
Speaking from my experience as a con dealer for the last 10 years (WonderCon & SDCC):
Here are general rules of haggling:
-Don't low-ball. That's the fastest way of offending the dealer & you're guaranteed a nasty glare. If item is marked at $50 and you try to offer $25, that's low-balling. Instead, try to offer something the dealer can meet in the middle. Start w/ $40 and see if dealer is willing to go for $45.
-Carry CASH. Dealers can work better discounts if cash is involved. Credit cards have a ridiculous surcharge fee & dealers don't want to get hit for every transaction. Ask the dealer if they're willing to offer a better price break if you pay in cash. Most of the time, they'll offer to waive the tax. (I think Santa Clara tax is now 9.5%? If item is $100 = approx $9.50 saved!)
-Don't get ass-hurt if dealers reject your offer. Some of those items may have been discounted & they're just trying to "break even". Asking them to sell for lower means they're losing money on the item in question.
-Last & not least: Be Polite. Don't be rude/demanding to the dealer if he/she is in the middle of conducting a transaction w/ another customer. You wait your turn like everyone else. If you rub the dealer the wrong way, they're less likely to sell you anything for a discount.
Hope this helps w/ everyone's bargain hunting!

and i thought i had a large amount :O usually i take 250 to fanime and im fine whoa
Apart from the $300 my hotel will cost for 2 nights, I am taking roughly $150 to spend at FanimeCon or at locations nearby (I do not intend to purchase anything, but if I see something I like, I might get it).
I almost always spend somewhere around 200 dollars. I usually try to bring somewhere around 250-300 dollars, though. Never hurt to have a little extra cash to splurge some more. :D Any less than 200 I won't have enough money for everything I want.
I've never spent over like, $30 in the dealers room LOL. Each year usually I just buy a couple of posters or a plushie or something, since I don't collect figures or anime/manga. ^___^;;
HOWEVER, I spend like double or triple that amount in the artist's alley. ;u; I guess prints/buttons/the art aspect of fanime appeals to me more. xD
In total, including badge cost, I never exceed spending $200 in each of the three years I've gone to fanime.
This year I'm gonna bring lotsa money to the swap meet. Hopefully I'll find stuff that I like that *u*!! Cuz last year only went friday (and late, cuz of the FLOW concert), and only got to spend a little bit of time in there. ;n; !!!
Alot of ATM's Nearby so save alot bring some and ATM it so you have time to say Hey do i really need this. But some cash for those OMG MUST BUY moments. Btw food can be cheeper if you WALK along the streets in San jose.
I spend between 500-600 at Fanime. 125 for my room, 75 roughly for food for the weekend and the rest on swag.
Only $50 this year.
My $600 Budget last year puts it to shame.
Well, time to kill myself...
you 600 dollar budget puts my 250 dollar budget to shame
Would it be obnoxious of me to say I don't really have a budget? I got back about thirty-five hundred dollars in taxes, a chunk of it when to plane ticket/hotel, I've put aside about 500 for food, and the rest is in a "use as needed" fund. ><''

Figures are absurdly expensive as they go up in quality.
The average size low end figure can go from $10-20, and depending on popularity even these skyrocket.

When I got an "allowance" for Fanime I only got $50 my first year and $100 the next few... and I actually ended up spending only half of that on everything (dealers room and food). It's amazing how much money you can save when you keep your impulse buys to a minimum.

If your not a figure buyer than its easy to save money. Also if your male its easyer. im not being sexist or anything its just that at Fanime they dont really sell Yuri books Nor do they sell Lollita male clothing. The clothing there from the fasion people are EXPENSIVE like 120 just for a jacket.

Thing is, I still need to get some DVDs of older anime, and fanime is my best shot. Plus it is tradition for me to get a new messenger bag every year at fanime, so that is $25-$36 gone from the start.

Moving to San Diego. Real life beckons, unfortunately. Comic Con and AX will be my new staples. Still, it won't be the same.
AX will never be the same, dont go to it or you will be forced to pay for things that are for free at fanime !

Yeah well...I'll go at least once to AX. I've been to Comic Con before and that was a blast, but yeah, so big it's almost alienating.
I may venture back for Fanime, but I don't know because it seems to be shifting more towards a music guest focus. I'm not blaming guest services or anything, you get who you can... and securing FLOW and Yuya, not to mention Yoshiki's last minute arrival is certainly nothing to scoff at. However, since concerts aren't really my thing the guest list is looking more and more familiar each year. I really enjoyed having the Aksys developers last year and the Gurren Lagaan team before that (the Yamaga party that year was amazing) but this year none of the non-musical guests really jump out at me.
Again, I'm not blaming anyone, it's just personal preference.
Still, I'll be hanging around the board to help answer questions and such as I have for the last 4-5 years. :)

Since people are including costs of necessities, mine are:
$37.13 - gas
$7.62 - food
Total: $44.75
Grand total for the whole con: $330. $50 pre-reg for '14, technically making that a cost for next year.
I live close enough to drive down. Saved money on food by eating only McDonald's $1 menu for dinner with large Costco muffins (which are quite filling) and bananas for lunch.
Totally wanted to purchase something that wasn't digestable, but my lack of money prevented that.
So... upwards $20.
Next year, man.
oh man, i spent some money this year
artist alley:
40.00 original painting
100.00 in commissions
dealer hall:
$140.00 on anime figures (including my $100.00 Perona that i have been looking for)
$40.00 wig
$10.00 books
other
$75.00 parking for 4 days
$30.00 snacks
$80.00 lunches
Nothing the dealers hall this year was awful, the selection and prices were outrageous most of it wasn't that rare and almost no new stuff, more importantly everything was over priced.
The only thing that caught my eye was this one figure that was out of print if still available would be 90 dollars shipped. Stupid dealer was asking 120 which was pushing it but I really wanted it and would have payed the extra 30 bucks to take it home. So I go to grab it and pay for it and the back of the box is all smashed in couldn't see that when it was on the shelf and it had a ton of customs tape that could not be removed. I asked if he would come down a little bit because of the damage and he wouldn't lower it even by a dollar. He said the item still new just the box is messed up. I don't buy damaged items I like my stuff new, unless he was going to give me a 40-50 percent discount.
So I said forget it I'll either pay a few extra bucks on Ebay or wait for the re-release and pay retail 80 dollars new for one.
I don't know what happened in previous years you could get a deal at the the con better than online, and they at least had stuff worth buying in person.

We're becoming picky anime buyer people!?!
Where does one acquire so much money?
People can buy hundreds of figures and not starve to death.

I save most of my money from my job so I have moolah to spend on stuff at Fanime.
Simple, plan and save. E.g. I put aside $X from every paycheck towards my Fanime fund with a target goal of Y and don't touch it. Have an idea of what I want to buy and always keep in mind that I can either walk away or find the item (s) online. I don't need it right then and there and if the dealer refuses to move on price, their loss. Save money elsewhere during the con, especially on food and drink, by bringing as much of my own food as I can and carrying a water bottle. Spend $2 at McDonald's for meals by getting two $1 menu sandwiches and not combo meals since I stopped drinking soda anyway. Honestly none of this hard to do when one practices discipline and sets priorities.

lanislori should treat everyone on this thread boba on her very first paycheck. :D jk
When Fanime comes back around, I'll be sure to.
I don't drink boba. :P I'd be happier knowing that you put our suggestions into practice and that they paid off. ;)
