Title: Music for the Black and White Ball 2010
Post by: tkdteo on August 03, 2009, 03:12:20 PM
Hello everyone,

So since there were some suggestions about music for BWBall this year, I thought I would get an early jump for 2010.  So if you have any requests or ideas for songs to be played either at the Black and White Ball or the dance lessons taught in the days prior to ball, please let me know.

As always, if you could email the song or link the song that would be great!  The best though is sending us an MP3 of the song.  But if you do not have a copy of the song just list the title/artiste/anime or video game.  Please remember that we try to accomodate everyone's suggestions for music but it is not a gaurantee that your song will be played at the Ball or the dance lessons.  Thanks.

- Jim

What type of music?  Is there a goal to keep it strictly to anime music?

All types of music are welcome.  But our main focus is usually on anime, video game, or jpop music.  But for some of the dances like tango and swing, it is hard to find music in those genre so we will use other types of music.  So feel free to post your suggestions.

Perhaps a little bit of notation of what dances the song would be suited for may be useful too along with the name and artist...

If at all possible please send suggesions in this format

Name of song - Artist (if known) - Series or game it is from (if applicable) - Dance suggestion done to the song (if known)

I tried this last year and had to good responses.  When I mention dance suggestions, please mark them with dances like waltz, tango, cha cha, etc..  Slow or fast does not constitute a dance suggestion.  We will have people go through the songs before we make a decision on to include the songs or not.  The panel can tell you what dances your song suggestions may fit.  Thanks!

Links?  Anyone have links to their suggestions where we may be able to hear it or dare I ask, could you email the mp3 or so to [email protected]?  It just makes it easier for us.  But if not, we will see if we can find it.  As a reminder, we will try to accomodate suggestions but there are no gaurantees that your suggestions will make it into the final playlist due to the amount of time we have for the BWBall and the amount of music suggested by Fanime goers.  Thanks.

Do you remember - Jay Sean w/ Lil John and Sean Paul

The point of this is to actually dance, if you could tell us what dances could be done to those songs that would be cool.

Boogie was amazing this year.  The All-Stars round was boss.  I was lucky enough to catch Nick King and his partner, that awesome chick from France, from sitting practically at their feet.  Never would be able to get that kind of action at a ballroom comp.

Here are my music offerings so far:

B'z - Konya Tsuki no Mieru Oka Ni [Nightclub 2 Step (NC2S)]
BoA - Obsessed [East Coast Swing (ECS)/Lindy]
Faye Wong - Eyes on Me [SLOOOOOW Bolero/Int'l Rumba/NC2S]
globe - Is This Love [NC2S]
globe - Stop! in the Name of Love [Chacha]
Koizumi Kyouko - For My Life [Quickstep]
Namie Amuro - What a Feeling [Chacha]
Namie Amuro - New Look [ECS/West Coast Swing (WCS)/Lindy]
Shimomura Yoko - Somnia Memorias [NC2S]
Sakamoto Maaya - Yakusoku wa Iranai [Viennese Waltz]
Uematsu Nobuo - Waltz for the Moon [Viennese Waltz - yeah, I know, everyone suggests this one]
Utada Hikaru - Flavor of Life (Ballad version) [Slow rumba - good for beginners]
Utada Hikaru - Flavor of Life (Original Karaoke version) [Slow chacha - good for beginners]
Yamaguchi Yuko - Believe [NC2S]

That's all I've got so far for anime/video game/k-pop/j-pop stuff.  I have a far, far bigger list of English/Spanish lang stuff for ballroom, latin, swing, etc I can email separately.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of one. "Koucha no Waltz," one of Maria's image songs from Hayate the Combat Butler. I'd assume the proper dance is the waltz, going from the name (but I know nothing about dances). You can listen to it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeS6gvlnZEw and I have an MP3 that I can send if needed.

well, Like Nami_Misaki said, this one ^ is good for the Vienna waltz.

so is this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p68tNGLN_00

and this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsqbqeSrPjY

cuz they're kinda faster?  the slower ones would be best for the box-step waltz that they teach in the ballroom classes.  It's kinda hard to do the box-step style waltz to faster music.

... i'm not the best at waltz terminology D:

Keep the suggestions going, folks!  There's no chance of anything you want to get played if you don't say what it is...

For the tango we might have to abandon anime music, I have not heard any tango music.  I would prefer music like "Libertango" or even "Roxanne" (though that might confuse people more), I think Roxanne has a bit of a long introduction and then towards the end it gets really quiet and people think it is over until it gets loud again right for the end, I have danced "Roxanne" with an experienced partner and she knew what was happening, but inexperienced people might not know..

Waltz's for now I think should not be Viennese, since we are not teaching that style (at least not at this moment), so something that might be as Viennese (not that I have a problem with the Viennese Waltz).
Title: Re: Music for the Black and White Ball 2010
Post by: michiko nakano on January 13, 2010, 01:14:46 PM
They did it last year.  Since Viennese is the kind of waltzing that's in disney movies and other non-ballroom movies, two things happen when a viennese waltz comes on: they either do a legit viennese waltz or they do what i call the "default waltz" where they just go side to side because that's what the average person's concept of "the waltz" is.

No worries though, most of the waltzes people have been suggesting (like Waltz with Adonis from Host Club, which I would LOVE to dance to at the ball, not to mention that most of the people there will recognize it) are pretty much Viennese-able so I'm not worried about it.  Here is another suggestion though:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaNM2UjE9TY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaNM2UjE9TY)

it's such a neat song!  It's from Vampire Knight (the second part, Vampire Knight Guilty).  It starts out as a waltz but then goes into a great cha-cha song.  and then it ends as a waltz (it's only for a couple bars but it's a really nice touch!!!).

I know what WCS is. It's the state dance and I actually know how to do it. Not amazingly well, but I know the basic step. It would be nice if everyone could actually keep the circle moving though...

And please please please can we not have that crap ass version of the macarena? Also, there were some goths freakin grinding on the dancefloor to everything and that was annoying.

West Coast Swing is California's official State Dance.

Many States have official symbols that identifies it against other states. Like the California Grizzley Bear is CA's state mammal and so on.

It's interesting to note that many states in the U.S. have Square Dance as their official dance. Maybe we should consider putting in a square dancing class in? ;-)

It's interesting to note that many states in the U.S. have Square Dance as their official dance. Maybe we should consider putting in a square dancing class in? ;-)

Oh ew....no offense, but I can't stand the damn thing. By circle, I mean that in Ballroom dancing the crowd is supposed to move counterclockwise around the room with the inside of the circle being used to pass those on the edge.

I know what WCS is. It's the state dance and I actually know how to do it. Not amazingly well, but I know the basic step. It would be nice if everyone could actually keep the circle moving though...

Um....... In which state is it the state dance?  And in what state does it travel in a circle??  I am confused ._.

Yikes!  Had enough of that in high school!  Well now I feel incredibly stupid, I do west coast and I didn't even know it was the state dance.  When did it become the state dance?  Also, for all you west coasters and salsaers and bluesers: http://www.cpsalsa.com/events/show/178 (http://www.cpsalsa.com/events/show/178)

@MonkeyRikku - Uh, what circle?  WCS is danced in a fixed slot.  There's no travelling around line of dance...

@Michiko - rave reviews from my friends who went to the Tri-Masq.

As for the official state dance thing: http://www.streetswing.com/statednc.htm (http://www.streetswing.com/statednc.htm)

Anyways, I'm teaching a beginner class at FanimeCon, so hope to see you guys out there!

I'll throw out a few suggestions.

The top two are for ECS and/or Lindy.

-Katamari Damacy Music: Crimson rose and a Gin Tonic  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHo2zGw1rIM)
Uniquely suited to swing, ECS or Lindy, since it's based off an old classic (it Don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing).

-Katamari On the Swing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCngZZFG7r8&feature=related)

Though I'm haven't had much waltz, I think this song might fit.
-Beautiful Katamari OST - La Campanella! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0qWSzXwoIM)

yeah west coast most definitely doesn't travel in a circle, that's why I was confused.

@okach - it was soooo fun!  I learned a lot of stuff, and decided that my favorite of the three styles is salsa, then blues, then west coast.  It's mostly because that's the order (easiest for me to hardest for me) and because I danced with some guy who owns a salsa bar and he taught me lots of cool stuff!  definitely stayed there with james til like three in the morning :P

For waltz song I would like to hear:

Waltz for Chihiro from Spirited Away
The Last Waltz from Oldboys
Waltz from School Days

I'm surprised someone brought up Hoshizora no Waltz and Tsuki no Waltz cuz I wanted to those song to be played for B&W ball and I listen to them just to work on my waltzing.

Since this is an Anime Convention it would be nice to keep the theme within the "Anime Spectrum" a pull a list of music that will closly match the music dance styles for each occasion. SEE BELOW FOR EXAMPLE:

Dance (waltz)

music: (Revolutionary Girl Utena MOVIE) -Toki Ni Ai Wa
(Macross 2 -Do You Remember Love) -Mo Ichido Love You-
          (Megazone 23) -Kaze no Lulliby-
          (Final Fantasy X 2) -1000 Words-
          (Himikoden) -Pure Snow-

Dance (Swing)

Music: (Najica Blitz Tactics) -Body & Mind-
(Burn Up Scramble)    -Love or Unlimited-
(Lost Universe) -Extrication- (Freak Lounge REMIX)
(New Cutey Honey) -Rendez-vous in Space-
          (Cowboy Bebop) -Tank

This would be just an example of matching anime style music to dance. It would be excellent to this again, there has not been a good "true" anime ball with "anime music in a long time. Maybe this year will be a little different!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  We are in the process of putting the music together for the Black and White Ball at the moment so keep those suggestions coming.  Please keep in mind that we are trying our best to select songs that are geared toward anime, video games, and j-pop.  The only thing is, many of the songs are hard to dance ballroom to and sometimes do not provide a steady danceable beat.  We do listen to all the songs and try to keep them within the theme of the dance but it is difficult at times.

Keep those songs coming.  We are hoping to finalize the playlist by the end of April 2010 sound if you want to request any songs or have some great suggestions please let us know!

- Jim

here are some good Night Club Two Step songs (the tempo is just right):

And it is true that most nightclub two step songs have a tempo of between 72 and 96 beats per minute...so yeah these are some examples.

I Could Fall in Love by Selena

One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey

Said I Loved You...But I Lied – Michael Bolton

Lady In Red – Chris De Burghe

Never Let You Go - Allure

Everything I Do I Do For You - Bryan Adams

Drowning In Your Eyes- Ephriam Lewis

Someone To Hold-- Trey Lorenz

Dreaming Of You-- Selena

If any of you have any more to add to this it would be grand! Just adding my two cents!

um i can definitely think of quite a few songs, but i don't really know that many "dance suggestions"
"We like to party" - venga boys (unsure appropriate) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zbi0XmGtMw - there are hip hop-like dance moves in the original music video, but i'm not sure if its possible to do them in formal attire, so this song is questionable
"Lilium" - Eflen Lied soundtrack - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaV6eDvgiG4 - slow waltz?
"Doubt & Trust" - d.gray-man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkAvajJW9N4&feature=related -
"Sha la la la" - venga boys - no series - the original music video does not have appropriate dance moves, but i think one could do west coast swing or country(?)
"Real Emotion" - Final Fantasy X-2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fByFORDcNLA - hip hop?
"Katekyo Hitman Reborn Chrome" - KHR (character theme songs) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCxexi7-sdw - unsure of dance
"KHR Mukuro" - KHR (character theme songs) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx3m1MVNbAc - ?
"Hibari" - KHR (character theme song) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SDWt9d-jMY - !!! waltz or tanga (i dont know its time signature)
"Belphagor" - KHR (character theme song) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsW1BQWP1C4 - unsure of dance
"Chairman's Waltz" - Memoirs of a Geisha - waltz
"Glaring Dream" - Gravitation OST - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rtA9aQ4njc - unsure of dance, but seems hip hop-y?
"Energy" - Marina Inoue - Ginban Kaleidoscope - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pnjq3lQ452A - definitely some ballroom dance, but unknown time signature to me, i think this is a real winner of a possible dance song
"Caramelldansen" - well... it seems really weird to suggest this... but i'm sure everyone knows the dance moves to it xD
"Love & Joy (Vocaloid ver)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0EQzjJZ-rk - there's a complete dance to this one as well, but whether or not possible to attempt in formal attire is unknown
"Koakuma Shounen" - Nabari no Ou - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd8y0HQiF50 - definitely sounds like waltz if it's 3/4 time, can't find a longer version?
"Musician" - Sanae Kobayashi/Yumi Mitora Kusakurin - D.Gray-man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGMog9nzVGM - there's a download link too vocals (http://www.sendspace.com/file/agbxb0) karaoke (http://www.sendspace.com/file/mszrsi)
"Hajimari No Hi" - D.N.Angel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URlxMYEaInc
!! "Just Dance" - Lady Gaga
"Mukuro Theme Song Kufufu no fu" - Katekyo Hitman Reborn - maybe we can use it for jazz(?)

*most of the songs i wanted to suggest are already there so don't need to repeat
*most of these songs are i'm-not-sure as well ...

At the black and white ball in 2008, you played The Dance of the Headless Corpse by Zombie Girl.  That was the perfect song.  We all had such a great time dancing to it.  It brings back lots of memories.  ^.^

So I guess I'm saying that I want it to be played this year.  =p

I noticed half of the song request here doesn't seem waltzable when people claim they are.  B&W Ball is looking for any slow waltz and sadly we're not looking for any V Waltz.  The beat has to have steady 3 count not 4 (Tonight by Smashing Pumpkin is a 4 count) and it has to be very slow  (Listen to Waltz of Chihiro).  Just ask one of the dance assistance including myself and the dance instructor.

Thanks for your post.  The instructors and staff are looking over the songs that have been suggested by everyone.  We thank you for all your submissions and we ask that you keep them coming.  We are listening to every song that is suggested on the forums and we are making decisions on which ones to include into the playlist for BWBall.  Keep in mind, although the song you suggested may not be suitable for a certain dance, it can be suitable for a different dance.  Also, your suggestions are great leads to what kind of songs you would like to hear at the BWBall so we are making an effort to make sure we include similar songs in there also.  Keep those suggestions coming!

I have a few suggestions, most from anime and video gaming:

EDIT!!   Updated with links to the music. And a couple more song suggestions. XD

Prelude ~We Are Not Alone~ - Fumi Ootou - Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro na ~Crescent Love~ - Waltz or any slow-dance
..... Notes: One of my random obscure anime picks. This song is really pretty and reminds me of a prince and a princess dancing in a ballroom a la 'Beauty and the Beast'. It has a sort of... swaying tune. Perfect for Waltz.
Linkage:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olwWEuv-Ybs

Marukaite Chikyuu (HRE Version) - Jun Konno - Hetalia Axis Powers - Some sort of regency dance...? Victorian something-or-other? I dunno what they're called....
..... Notes: I always pictured the character who sings this version asking one of the other characters to dance with him for this... >w<
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CjJtgNjgq8  ((This is only a preview, but there is a download link in the video description for the full song. I also have the Mp3 and I can provide it upon request.))

Lullaby For You - Jyongri - The World Ends With You - Slow-dance
..... Notes: Reminds me of one of those slow dances you'd see in a movie.
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7j6eFND_i0 (Japanese)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGqpMIMt8K4 (English)

Inori ~You Raise Me Up~ - Lena Park - Romeo X Juleit - ...not sure?
..... Notes: This one's pretty, and I think I'd love to figure out a use for this one on a dance floor. Probably good for slow dancing. Again. All my suggestions turn out this way. ^^;
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oph966TNNrg

Open Your Mind - Youko Ishida - Aa! Megami-sama - It's in 12/4 time (I think) which makes me unsure if it's slow enough for Waltz...
..... Notes: Same as the song above. XD
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX0QOObWWyQ

Obsession (String Version) - not sure? - .hack//SIGN - I have no clue what this could be used for but it'd be cool to try!
..... Notes: Has a flowing sound, also kind of exotic. I could see this used for something. I'm just not sure what exactly.
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0LYrKLr8nU

To All Tha Dreamers - SOUL'd Out - Yakitate! Ja-PAN - Dare I say it--DISCO??
..... Notes: This one's upbeat and I could see this used with the Electric Slide even. :D
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZvQPjx6Ko8&feature=related

Guns & Roses - Paradise Lunch - Baccano! - Swing
..... Notes: I think that if no one else has suggested this yet we all need to give ourselves a slap on the wrist. Definitely upbeat enough to get the party swingin' -- literally! Best jazz tune from an anime EVER. I love Baccano~
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wInHktd7hU

Cha Cha Slide - Mr. C The Slide Man - No Series - The Dance in the Song!!
..... Notes: This dance is HILARIOUS fun. Really easy to learn, AND the lyrics tell you the moves!
Linkage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCEu_dFfw6I

Last but not least, because my friend who's attending Fanime for the very first time won't shut up about this scene in Enchanted,

So Close - John MchLaughlin - In this particular case, Enchanted - Waltz
Notes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UuWQndTXKM&feature=related <-- Explains itself.

I know not all have a specific dance, but I also know that I lack in dance knowledge, so I was suggesting them in the hopes that they may provide useful. Some were sort of random, but I couldn't leave them out.
Thank you for reading, if I think of anything else, I shall post it!

Is it too late to email in more suggestions? I realized that I suggested Jill's Blue but not Garden, which is pretty similar (a little less cabaret and a little poppier), but keeps an even beat through the whole thing.

Two suggestions...and I know it's late, but better than never.

Check out Buena Vista Social Club - Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.  They have great covers of songs which are great for some salsa, cha cha, and rumba.

Also, Lady Gaga's Just Dance works really well was an upbeat teaching song for cha cha.  The beat is steady and the song is contemporary.
