Can I sign up for a friend as well as myself?  She has a job interview in the morning and has to commute several hours to get there and thus has to go to sleep.  Just wanna know if this is possible.

O_O?

Be patient.  The link will be posted.  It was an ESTIMATED time of posting.  Just keep refreshing the forum page and it'll be there when Hank gets to it. :D
I apologize for my appearance of impatience.
I did not wish to offend you.
My post did not fully send. I will edit it.

Oh, I wasn't offended!  I just know from previous years that we have to wait.  It's just part of the game. I should have italicized the word estimated instead of putting it in all caps, but was too lazy to do so.  I just want people to remember that the amazing karaoke staff have lives outside of con.  <3  I apologize if I came across angrily.  I'm not staff or anything, but I just know it can be frustrating if people start saying things because it didn't go exactly as planned.  We're all in the same boat.  I'm stalking the forums just like you and all of the other contestants. :b

hello >3>;;;

I competed several years ago, choked on the first song, and did not progress to finals. This year, if my life stabilizes and I'm able to attend Fanime (fingers crossed!) I'd like to compete with less personal pressure involved.

I'm thinking of these two songs~

Catch You Catch Me (cut to begin at 16 s)
and Ringo Biyori

I'm just so charmed by the engrish in these songs

Hope to join you all for karaoke fun times this year!

Woot woot for the Jupe!  :D

Don't get nervous, guys!  The point of this competition is to have fun, and being nervous puts a bit of a damper on that.  Just do your best and enjoy the ride. :D

i'm bumping what christin said
its just a fun environment and you meet great people
i have tons of friends that i meet every year and its always a blast :)

BTW, do you know if Chi is coming this year?  If he is, don't let him miss sign ups this year.  Last year he forgot to sign up because he was gaming. XD  I died inside.  Chi needed to compete because he is awesome sauce.

I have a question on voice dampening. When it says that the song will be lowered so that the vocals are low, in return making us sing louder to overlap them, will that be done at the karaoke room around check-in times or do we have to dampen it ourselves?

The two songs I wish to do for the contest are "The Homework Never Ends" (Yu Yu Hakusho) and "Now I Know" from Persona 4 Arena.

So you have a choice.  You can remove the vocals at home beforehand or you can have them dampen the vocals while you sing the song.  It's an instant effect and they would do it when you check-in and do a soundcheck and during the contest.  That said, even if you want them to do the dampening, you should at least try to test out what vocal dampening will sound like at home so that you can be sure that the song actually can have the vocals removed.  Some songs don't have the vocals in the center channel, making them impossible to remove or removing the vocals also removes important instrumental parts, so definitely try out vocal dampening beforehand even if you'd rather the amazing karaoke staff turn on vocal dampening at the actual competition

You don't need to tell them the names of the songs you're doing yet.  That is information that you give them when you actually sign-up for the contest.  Hope this helps!

Will ipods and such be allowed in open mic?  They were last year, but I just wanted to check.  It's easier for me to scrounge up karaoke for some songs than to worry about you guys having it or not. :b

Okay, so now I'm a bit confused since the "editing rules" aren't laid out super clearly in the initial post and I've never competed at Fanime, so maybe someone could post those specific rules?  Mostly I'm confused as to why we can't cut a track that we bring ourselves....seems to make more sense to let us pick whatever 2:00 section we'd like and let us just cut it beforehand so the staff doesn't have to fade out the track after 2 minutes?

Sorry, just want to make sure I understand before I make song decisions...

Again, I am not staff, but from what I understand based on my questions and the rules of previous years, you cannot cut the audio.  The only editing you can do is to remove vocals on a non-karaoke track.  Anything else is prohibited.  In addition, unless the rules have changed, you don't get to pick what two minute section you sing.  You sing the first two minutes of the piece.  The only exception is if there is a long instrumental introduction.  For example, last year I sang Manten by Kalafina.  The piece has about 25 seconds of instrumental introduction.  I had the staff start the piece 20 seconds in so that it didn't cut into my performance time.  I would advise playing at least a little bit of the instrumental intro so you can get your pitch accurately.

If I've made any mistakes, Hank, please feel free to correct me.  I just figured I'd give her the information that I already know.

It totally blew my mind, haha.  Can't wait to see you at con!  I'm so excited to hang out with everyone. <3

Yes Jackie, it's Kaya :) I want to try open-mic this year as well, so perhaps I'll see you guys there too!

Christin- They're both really nice songs! I'm sure you'll sound great.

Sweeeeeeet.  So Kaya, one of your high school classmates (she was in PE with you your freshman year, I think) is in my French class.  It's an upper division French class. :b

So, here are the songs I'm thinking of singing.

Round 1: Mirai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9ARIwSVvvM
Round 2: After All http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8xoI6BWJYA

As always, this is subject to change, but if you remember my voice at all, let me know what you think of these songs for me.  I REALLY want to do at least one Kalafina song. :O

Nice song choices my dear.  LOVE the first one.  ^-^

I would do the original, but it does not have a karaoke version and does not vocal remove well.  It's more choir-esque, but this version will do too.

I can't wait to see all the new talent this year.  And I can actually do open mic afterwards!!!  YAY!!!!!  XD

Anybody want to share their song plans for the contest?  =3

Here's my plans for my vocal destruction =P.....

Prelim: "Blaze" sung by HIMEKA
(originally sung by someone else as the opening for Tsuabsa.  Forgive my ignorance at the moment)

Final (if by some miracle I make it that far): "Endless Story" by Yuna Ito

A little bit of karaoke trivia for you guys: HIMEKA won one of our contests back in 2002 (at another convention).

Neat, AND you commented in my humble thread!  COOL! :O

Another question regarding the wording of the rules!  In the first part of the rules you say that up to 45 will compete, but you then mention sign-ups in excess of 40.  Will there be 40 slots like previous years, or will there be 45?  Thanks!

45 entries this year. Note that the song time limit in the qualifying round is shorter this year. 2:00 instead of 2:30.

I saw that.  Thank you for answering my five million questions!  I'm SUPER pumped for the contest.  It is a large part of why I attend Fanime. <3

I am so psyched to sing with you, Lauren and Jackie!  Open mic, WOOT!

I have made the finals for the last two years and am really hoping to make the finals again this year.  Since I got sixth and then fourth, I'm telling myself that maybe I'll get second this year if the pattern keeps up. XD

Debating entering...
I don't tend to enter the Fanime contests (though I did last year -- I was the GitS cosplayer who butchered an EGO-WRAPPIN' song), but I'm still tempted.

I'll be doing a ton of open mic, though, so there won't be any shortage of singing from me. ;) I'll probably be there mostly Friday after the contest (likely cosplaying Julia from Cowboy Bebop) and Saturday evening/into the night (likely in my super lazy Mom Lalonde cosplay), and I do have some themed songs planned, to go with the cosplays.

I've been tempted to do all three Fanime contests one year. I have an idea for Accoustikaraoke, but I'd need a decent group for it, and I haven't bothered to get one together and do this. This will be my first year doing the Karaoke Gong show as well, though my sister usually enters. Be sure to look for me -- I'm planning on wearing a...err...modified fancystuck!Rose cosplay. You'll all (hopefully) understand why the modifications once the act begins. (the Rose cosplay is just because I'll be coming back from the B&W Ball, there's no deeper meaning, though it does add an extra layer of...something. not entirely sure what.)

Good luck to everyone who enters all the contests! <3

I always wish my friend who plays bass lived closer to me so she could enter Acoustickaraoke! with me.  We used to jam.  If I could find someone to accompany me on guitar or something, I'd so enter. :b

I'm definitely planning to enter the regular karaoke contest.  I have a song for finals, but am still trying to pick the one for qualifying.  It looks like this year we only get 2:00 instead of 2:30 like we used to, so I need to find a song that shows off what I've got within a 2:00 timeframe.

Hey, guys!

Since last years thread was such a success, I decided to create a new thread for this year!

Most of us contestants are super chatty and tend to want to start talking about things other than rules in the Official Karaoke Contest Rules thread.

This thread is a place for karaoke contest contestants to chat about the contest and plan to meet up at Fanime, etc.

Feel free to introduce yourselves!  I'm Christin, and this is my fourth year as a contestant and the third year in a row in which I will have competed.  Assuming I don't somehow miss sign-ups, of course!  Some of you may remember me as the girl who sang Manten at last year's karaoke contest and that I may be slightly obsessed with Kalafina.

Schedule

Before Con:
5/5: Online sign ups open and run until full, or until 5/17, whichever comes first.
5/20: Contest Start List posted

At Con:
5/24, 2PM to 5PM: Check-in, warm ups, and at con sign ups.
5/24, 5PM: Deadline for online sign ups to check in.
5/25, 5:15PM: If spots are available, we will add entries from the waiting list. Waiting list entries must be present to be added.
5/25, 6PM: Qualifying Round
5/25, 9:00PM: Final Round

The contest is only Friday, 24th, correct?  Or is it done through two days?
Just want to be sure.

Thank you!

I could be wrong, as I am not karaoke staff, but I think that was just a typo.  The Karaoke contest has been on Friday at least since 2009, and I'm pretty sure it has been for quite a bit longer than that.  The random 5:15PM on the next day also seems kind of random.

:D
