General Convention Discussion / Website Critiques

Quote from: "gem2niki"Uh...sorry...but is there more people helping you with the webdesign @_@;;

(might sound negative)

It looks a lot amateur-ish compared to the previous year. Even tho it's beta 1.0 it'll change right? D:

The border is not the best choice for design >_<;;

I wonder if I can help out even tho I'm in the artist pool?

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with this even though I feel bad considering your position  :?

It's a massive step backwards from last years design. It looks like you went for style over function and even then, it's not appealing. Everything about it is counter-intuitive from the fonts chosen to the navigation. It's hard to read and it's hard to click on anything you want. I don't even know where you're going to stick the mass amount of content that the site will hold by the time the con rolls around.

Quote from: "alkaline"Now that we know AX was a total, unmitigated disaster, I am very interested in hearing this report :lol:

I'm curious, what went so wrong at AX?

This thread is full of fun stories!

So, now that the disaster that was AX'07 is out of the way, my girlfriend has made a very good point: once word from their Japanese guests makes the rounds over on that side of the ocean, how many folks do you think will be willing to come to an American convention? Fanime has a good reputation, but I think it's something to consider when it comes to non-repeat guests.

So, for music I got to thinking.. why not try and tap the Nerdcore acts? Anime will always be the focus, but we could definitely afford to have more gaming-related acts, right? A few suggestions..

Cinemechanica - Also known as Contra/Mega/Ninja Gaiden Band, these guys recreate entire NES games, complete with rock band and speed runs. They're AMAZING live and have been trying to get on the Penny-Arcade Expo bill to no avail. These guys would blow folks away and be a huge draw.
Example: Video

Optimus Rhyme - Brilliant hip-hop without samples, these guys are the best on the scene. Real down to earth guys too. They'd definitely be something different. It also doesn't hurt that "School the Indie Rockers" was one of my favorite albums last year :X

The Minibosses - I don't think I have to explain these guys. Minibosses are simply the best gaming tribute band around. I saw them in SF late last year and they were amazing.

If anyone staffers say "Hey, this is actually a good idea!" let me know. I can use some of my connections to try and make this stuff possible.

Quote from: "dealerJason on June 27th"Frankly, I think AX is FINALLY becoming the show it was always supposed to be.  Did you see the list folks?  Amazing.

...

I will be listing my report on Fanime's forum.  Look for it in the coming days.

Now that we know AX was a total, unmitigated disaster, I am very interested in hearing this report :lol:

(( Uhg. I didn't even know you were there. My girlfriend and I were so frustrated with AX that we went sight seeing like tourists.. we could have hung out :(  ))

Update #9 - A week and a road trip later and we're ready to start looking back on Damn You Internets. Our two night show at Fanime was a huge success, setting the panel attendance record for the year. We'd like to thank all of you for showing up and Fanime staff for their support.

The first year of Damn You Internets, back in 2006, was more of an experiment in boredom than anything else. Mikey had like, what? Five panels? It was ridiculous, but "Damn You Internets: So You Want To Be a VIP Star?" was a hit. This was our second year and I'd like to consider it the learning experience. We tried out a lot of technical tricks and luckily for us, we walked away unscathed.

Really, it all boiled down to two programs: Keynote and Punakea. The former handled all the presentation aspects, while the latter was responsible for us being able to snag the right files at exactly the right time. In practice, they both presented their strengths and weaknesses, but overall it worked as planned.

The biggest lesson learned this year was in pacing. We had a lot of great ideas and segments planned out, but then we blew through them in a matter of minutes when they should have been stretched out. Example? We blew through the Rule /34/ game in about 20 minutes.. when it really should have took twice that amount of time. Like I said, this year was the learning experience.

So what about next year? I can say with absolute certainty that we will be back for Fanime 2008, but that's all for now. We're already kicking around some crazy, huge ideas, but honestly? That's a year from now. We have a lot of thumb twiddling time in between. Believe me when I say that when we "announce" it, you'll know.

Until then, I've updated the first post to contain all the videos, images and other media from the panel. The lot of us will be a slew of conventions this year, but of course, Damn You Internets will only be found at Fanime.

See you next match!

Also, no offense Mikey, but how hard is it for your panel to be a 'success' when the main point of it is for people to get together and swear and rant about the idiots that roam the interwebz? Doesn't seem terribly complex. My friends went and had a good time though so, hoorah.

N'ah, that would be the anime boston 4chan panel where it was an hour of people shouting memes at each other. We had real content, and things that made it a real panel. Because for the most part, we didn't rant about idiots at all, we talked about the culture.

We also had a lot more people show up the second night when compared to the first and it was mainly due to word of mouth. Why? Because it wasn't (like Mikey said) like other "4chan panels" where people just screamed "jokes" at one another. We put on a production, we had a program, we stuck with it and people loved it.

Also, the next time you try and belittle the work of those putting on panels for Fanime? Try attending it first.

Update #8 - Ahoy, from Bakersfield! I'm out on a road trip and still kicking the post mortem around. We're still waiting to see if the rest of the second night's missing video pops online, but in the mean time we'd like to give you all a treat for attending the panel. And so, I put together something that was very requested throughtout the weekend. Presenting -

Damn You Internets!: The Soundtrack!

Link:http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QTW2XE75 <- New Link!

I'll let most of it be a surprise, but rest assured that if you heard a song during the panel, you'll find it here. Everything from the "Land of Chocolate" intermission music, to the trailer track "Narvas" and even that great YuGiOh remix. It's all here (21 tracks in all) and ready to be consumed!

See You Next Match!

Edit: We forgot a song and have updated the download. Sorry for the trouble!
