Title: CosPlay Event Ideas-Your input please!
Post by: dealerJason on September 25, 2005, 10:32:00 PM
Hello Folks,
The following are some ideas that have come up during Pre-Planning meetings.  I offer them up to you now to see what you think about these ideas.  I changed the name in the hopes that it will gain more interest.  I really do want your input.  Tell me what you think!

1. Fountain Awards.
Our official CosPlay gathering area will be the fountain area out side McHenry.  The Awards would be a peer award that would be presented after the gathering on Stage Zero (more on that in another posting).  I would need the help and input of CosPlayers to make sure this goes semi-smoothly for the first year.

2. CosPlay Chess
Okay, imagine this.  We have Ranma 1/2 cosplayers playing Chess against Naruto CosPlayers.  The chess pieces are the CosPlayers themselves.  When a piece is taken, the cosplayer shows off their finishing move before the taken piece leaves the field!  We would use a speed Chess format, numbered tiles, and actual chess players to help facilitate this idea.  It has so many possiblities!

3. Fashion Show
Okay, I know you guys are great with needle and thread, but how about getting some recognition?  The Fashion Show would be your opportunity to create orginal costumes or outfits.  Prizes would be recognition of your achievement, in later years, scholarships could be possible.

4. Drive By Cos-Play
Ever just get an idea to do a skit in the middle of Con?  You guys have the people right there, it is brilliant, but you have no place to perform it and Der CosPlay is 2 days away.   If this has been your dilema, then Stage Zero is for you!   On top of its other programming, Stage Zero will offer CosPlayers a chance to do those quick impromtu skits or test out their skit ideas before their Sunday Performance.

Please, comment on these ideas.  Have you seen them at other cons?  Why did you like it?  Why didn't you?  What problems do you see?  Let me know.  I am wating to take notes.

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner

Shameless bump because I want to see if the name through people off.  Even if it is evil and bad, let me know what you think.

ate my post so now i have to rewrite everything -_-'

1. Fountain Awards.
~peer awards are nice, but it seems like too many people are hurt when this happens, either because people are upset over who wins, or loses. this could possibly lead to a popularity contest over the cosplayer, or the series they are cosplaying from or there character.

i say no

2. CosPlay Chess
i think this isn't that bad of an idea, i wouldn't be interested in this kind of event, but i think if there were enough people to participate it could work

i say yes

3. Fashion Show
~ i personally dont think theres enough people who attend fanime who make there own original costumes, and even if there is enough interest, who knows if people would want to watch?

i say maybe, but i'm leaning towards no

4. Drive By Cos-Play
~this event seems like it could be trouble, at con events like these seem too unpredictable and hard to handle/operate. theres problems like what if too many people want to participate? what if no one wants to participate? what if no one wants to watch it?

i say no

most of your ideas seem rough and could use a lot more elaboration, but i do understand your prolly just throwing out ideas right now gl~

I like the Cosplay Chess idea...though I imagine it to be a slow process.

I saw part of the masquerade, and at sometimes people just walk on stage for about 1 minute or two showing off their costume...yes? so maybe if you wanna put the fashion show, make it included in the masquerade....with all that stage space needed though, there would be less seats for people. i don't know. i like the idea though.

On the cosplay chess idea, there are a lot of people willing to participate. The thread's here somewhere, and there were a lot of people who signed up. I'm sure that if we remake the thread especially for FanimeCon insted of having it at Sanata Row, we'd have many more people willing to play. ^^;

Yeah, but would the cosplay chess have to be Naruto against Ranma 1/2? I imagined it more of everyone dresses as whichever character and we use paper hats to tell the pieces apart. And the teams could be black and white or something.

*screams*
I had a huge, beautiful post that I was going to put up, and just as I hit the submit button, my computer shut down.

*ahem* Anyhow.
In regards to Cosplay Chess: The thread is somewhere on the second page - I haven't had the chance to bump it or anything.
The original idea of it was for it to be a costume free-for-all, not just Naruto and Ranma 1/2. I think Jason was just using that as an example of the series that could face off. I'm not sure if that's what the plan still is; I'm not part of staff/planning/etc., so I don't know.
Also, like Jason said, it'd be speed chess.

For everything else:

1. Fountain awards
As previously stated, I doubt it'd be possible to have fair and unbiased peer awards. There'd be a huge popularity race between famous/obscure characters and series, or well-known or generally new cosplayers.
I vote no.

2. Cosplay Chess
Biased opinion pwahaha. :D
I vote yes.

3. Fashion Show
A contest just for original ideas and designs would be awesome, but I'm concerned that it would just leave the door open for lazy-butt 'closet cosplayers'. I mean, it'd be totally awesome for those ultra-creative people to show off their costumes (like fairies, knights, etc.), but the lazy people would worm their way in too.

I vote maybe, but most likely no.

4. Drive by Cosplay
Ehh... It would be a great chance to allow improv actors and similar types of entertainers to show off their talents, but that seems like it'd be difficult to moderate and run.
I vote no.

These ideas do seem good, but could use a bit more solid planning and explanation. Maybe a little later on, with more thought and setting up, more of these ideas would be good.

*Throwing fountain awards idea away*
Okay then my next statement may help matters....

Fashion show and Drive By Cosplay will be held on a new venue called Stage Zero.

Stage Zero is to be a live show that will go all day and into the evening.  Programming will be fast and constant.  The idea of Stage Zero is for you to sit in one place and watch the con happen.

Ideally
All guests will be brought to Stage Zero for short interviews.
Musical guests will preview their music.
Convention announcements
3-minute movies
TRL AMV's
Game shows
Talk show
Panel announcements
and just general fun.

or

We just give Steve Bennett a Microphone and we listen to him all day! *L*

If anyone saw what we did at RECCA Con in March of '05, then you will know what I am talking about.

I hope this clears up some of my ideas.

But don't worry, the Fountain Award idea is now buring in my trash can...

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner

1. Fountain Awards.
....you already have a descision for this. >_>

2. CosPlay Chess
thats a good idea, but what if there arent enough people who are from the same show? O_O

3. Fashion Show
scholarships? for what? O_O but sounds interesting ^^

4. Drive By Cos-Play
AWESOME!

One idea is to do an informal masquerade where anyone can get up and show off their costume or perform just for fun, not competition, similar to how AX has the Chibi Masquerade.

I like the cosplay chess idea, though I think it should be opened up to any characters.

i still don't think you should have a fashion show, just because there aren't enough people who go to fanime who even make original costumes.

As for the idea of the 'drive by cosplay' the idea of making it like the chibi masquerade at ax would be better.

not everyone goes to reccacon so you should probably explain yourself cause i have no idea what the hell went on.

those are my opinions, but i personally think the only ones that could possibly work is the chess idea, and maybe the dive by if you set it up like ax's.

I say yes to CosPlay Chess and Fashion show.
We had these two ideas before and I still support them... I think they also were suggested in Ideas/Suggestions...

Maybe not necessary as single cosplay groups for the CosPlay Chess. I say for groups to decide their own combinations.  It doesn't have to be all in one series. I also think it should be open for any characters. We all know that not everyone that cosplays, cosplays as a group. (or a big group...) I might participate but the cosplays I'm thinking of doing won't have a lot of people cosplaying for....

If no Fashion show, will you take volunteers/sign-ups who want to show off their outfits to announce skits?  Take turns, or in-between the skits, just do a casual saunter across the stage?

i thought that's the point of having an MC was to announce skits etc. i think that'd cause too many problems to have volunteer costumers. i think if the people who wanted to show off there costumes, should just enter the masquerade, after all thats what it's there for is to be entertaining, or to show your cosplay~

I have one question in regard to the Chess Game... who would be moving people?

...... Actually, here's one more. Where would it be held? If it's directed by two sort of "overlord" players who direct the pieces, you'd need a pretty high vantage point to be able to see the whole board. Also, there might be a lot of injured costumes if the chessboard is too crowded, which might lead to a lot of heated arguments, which might lead to a ban on such activities. If we're using real people, and that's what it sounds like, you'd practically have to hold it in a basketball arena. Forgve me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen too many giant rooms in the convention center that are at least two stories high. If the game was played on a normal sized board with the moves called out to the pieces, well, that might work, but it wouldn't be as much fun, I think.

Don't get me wrong--I love the idea. I'm just confused about the... well, the battle plan for making it happen. I'd love to take pictures of it, if it ever happens, though....

And on the fashion show, I think it'd be a good idea if you made it more of a Goth-loli show. It seems like the majority of self-designed costumes are in that category, anyway, though that's still not all that common... what if you made it more like a costume challenge? Give out a basic idea, say, "pirates," months ahead of time, and then challenge cosplayers to come up with original "pirate" outfits? The idea wouldn't work now, since I don't think there's really enough time anymore for extra costumes, but if it was announced right after the last con, it could work.

The Fashion Show would allow those that create their own costumes an opportunity to make their own original designs.

Now, I know there is not a large hue and cry for this, but I know there are a few cosplayers who have bigger desires than just doing cosplay.

This is an opportunity to show off that desire.

The scholarships I speak of would be after a few years of the event.  I am hoping that this program will allow fans to actually turn their hobby into a job!

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner

I vote a big *YES* on the fasion show and cosplay chess. I think that both these ideas would perk up the con nicely.

In terms of drive-by anime, sounds like it would be much fun if it were organized, i.e., the space was alotted, it was in the programs, people know about it, etc. Spontaneity is a fun thing.

Ah, that's easily solved!  In the thread I believe we discussed having a simple, normal chess tourney, and then to have the winners play each other in the champiionship match with the cosplayers.  The two chess players would play on a regular chessboard, with an announcer (or two? or none?) telling the corresponding chess players where to move after each turn.  If we did that, it would be a lot less confusing.

Does that help?

The idea of cosplay chess is great!  With some rounding off its planning and a little imagination for the "overlord vantage point", it should work pretty smoothly and turn out to be as fun as it sounds.....live minions shuffling to their doom...errr...yeah.  Really an exciting idea imo.

I think the Stage Zero would be an awesome place. I mean even if no one is around, it's a good place to practice just BEING on stage. Not to mention if people perform long enough they might get a crowd. Just have people go by ever 10-15min to do a quick check of the area, and I think you'd do just fine.

peer awards....I have to agree it'd easily turn into a popularity contest.

Cosplay chess....Delicious!! *_*

Stage Zero would not be an empty venue at anytime, nor would it rely on that much randomness.  I liken stage zero to a radio show.  There will be bits, there will be talking, there will be guests, there will be games shows.  This is all possible.  How much will you participate?

the stage zero idea seems kind of chaotic. also, woudl there be a schedule posted so you know what is going on ahead of time? or is it just "show and and whatever is on is on"? i do like the idea of being able to go somewhere instresting in between events or if i get bored of everythign else, but i do not like the idea of sitting back and watching the con go by. so unless there was some sort of schedule and a way to know what will go on, then i say that is a bad idea.

like, what if someone's *favorite* j-rocker is up there doing an interview or a practice performance, and they did not know, and only found out about how awsome it was afterwards? i know i woudl be upset. but that is just my opinion, i guess.

you shodul make it very highly organized if you do it at all.

Yes.

We shall have a forum topic called 'What is Stage Zero?'  I thought we already had that, but I guess now's the time to make it happen.

From that post, you can click on links to events that will be on Stage Zero.  I hope as much as you do that the event will be well organized.  As Jason said, it will be like a radio show with scheduled lineups and broadcasting on the convention center tv monitors that you walk b'neath.

woudl it be in a huge autitorium, a large room, what? i was thinking somethign alsong the lines of all-room sized. anything larger would be kinda awkward and anything smaller might be too crowded. i think it would be cool to have it a little more intimate so you feel liek you are right there in the middle of the action. :)

bump

Quote from: "Default"For the drive by cosplay thing, a few friends and i were thinking about doing an iron chef thing

I went to Anime Destiny today and they held an Iron Cosplay event where 6 teams of 2 (M/F) each got a box (same items in each box I believe) of items to craft an outfit/cosplay with, and 45 minutes to craft.

The rules were basically, you didn't have to use all the items in the box BUT you did have to incorporate the secret item: in this instance a bottle of Otaku Sweat.  Oh, and in this instance, the teams had to create a mascot for Anime Destiny.

The cosplay was actually Crossplay, meaning the one who got outfitted had to be outfitted in the opposite gender.

It was a lot of fun seeing how the different teams utilized the same materials to come up with an outfit.  I'd like to see something like this attempted at Fanime.  The event had a pretty good audience, and the only bad thing was that, while the teams were crafting, the audience just sat around and chatted or hung out.  I don't know if there could be someone going around with a running commentary like on Iron Chef, or even a short lecture on cosplay or something while the audience is waiting. ??  Just a suggestion, really.  And not sure if this is the right place to put this.
Title: CosPlay Event Ideas-Your input please!
Post by: Captaine Kit on November 06, 2005, 03:04:58 PM
Hella cool!  I would like to see something like this at Fanime also.  Live commentary makes an excellent attention grabber, and the judges for that event should have interesting things to say while everyone is watching the contestants.

So far in the costume lineups on Stage Zero, we have the fashion show and the Cosplay Catwalk (drive-by cosplay).  If we could get a team of judges for the Catwalk, then I'm sure they'll be more than willing to participate as judges in a FanimeCon Iron Cosplay.

Thus, I depart with a request for judges.  If you or anyone you know would like to judge the Catwalk, I'm all ears.

another bump

This is not a suggestion but a question because I am new to Fanime.

Has there ever been a theme for Der Cosplay?  I mean, the entrants must follow a certain idea for their performance or include a certain line (this is somehow related to the Iron Chef idea posted above).  Maybe not for Der Cosplay but for a smaller event, challenge the entrants to follow a specific idea, like, oh, it's a tea party (oh, wait, this sounds like something from Whose Line is it Anyway?).  Okay so you've got Naruto groups doing a tea party, Hellsing groups, One Piece groups, etc., just to see how they would interpret a tea party, keeping in mind their characters and the general feel of their anime.

I guess this ended up as a suggestion after all, sorry.

yes please do iron cosplay! me and my bf did it at anime destiny and it was a blast! (i remember saying this somewhere else but i cant remember where)

i think if you were to do iron cosplay, you should run it throughout the four days of the con, maybe one iron cosplay event a day? that way say if someone wants to participate there'll be 4 days to try and participate, plus it gives people something to do on monday when the con is slow =P

Stage Zero does not sound complicated as long as there are specific time slots. It sounds like an idea for oppertinity!
This may be the appropriate place for the drive by cosplay- combining the 2

Cosplay Chess- It would make a unique event and I am sure people are willing to try it out- Time limits might be good! A chess game can go on for YEARS!

Fashion show- Just the opposite- I know nothing but people who make their original costumes. cosplayers have been sadly left out of some fun, and deserve to be reconized for their efforst from beginer to advanced! Awards I would suggest to include are: Sponsored free gift goody bags for all ( just like the cherry blossom, festival parade) and big winnder get a certifcate.
OR as some say a scholarship in fashion design or some other is a good idea as well. I am sure cosplay lab would be willing to help- just ask
I also know a few professional seamstress cosplayers who are qualified to lend a fair judgment from any level ^_^

Who is the current director of masq as on now?

1) Draft every detail for what the event can look like.
2) Decide on the variations that your event can take.  Draft one document for each variation of the show.
3) Submit it to Jason.  Volunteer to represent that show or suggest that someone else runs this show.

It's cool to have all these 'what ifs' available to look at, but unless somebody takes the initiative to draft a proposal, none of the events here is likely to happen.  I guarantee that even if you don't intend to run it, a complete outline is enough for someone to elaborate on if they were to take charge of it.  The preferred language for any proposal document is "X will look like . . . " as opposed to "If this, then that.  If Fanime could this, I might that. . . ."  What you require is much more supported than what you request, if you've followed the lead this far.

Absolutly- for anything to become a reality, it certainly needs to be taken seriously enough to form an outline and proposal. Presented formally and professionally ^_^
Also keeps things from not flying off the handle while conducting any event ^_^ I'm sure experienced people understand that ^_^

For the fashion show, include costumes as well, not just original things people come up with. I personally don't want to enter Der Cosplay, but if there were a runway esque show that was not competative, I would definitely strut my stuff down the runway for an event. A sort of yay for everyone, no prizes thing would be really neat. Or instead of no prizes, prizes for everyone? I say leave the judging to Der Cosplay and give everyone cheap prizes for the runway show. It would more be a costume show-off event for those of us who don't want to participate in a huge event. With how Stage Zero sounds like it will be set up, you could do several runway events throughout the day, where sign up is 'on the spot'. That way, people could strut multiple costumes at different times, or just walk in whenever is convenient for them to do their walk.

That's what I think at least, for this event. :) I personally have no interest in cosplay chess, but I am sure a number of people would. Cosplay DDR sounds fun, but it also sounds dangerous. If Cosplay DDR were ever put in, you would definitely have to have limits on who is allowed to participate, so no one gets hurt and all that.

I enjoyed the "Iron Cosplay" that Anime Overdose05 had on Sunday. It was a good day and held at I believe 12 to 1 pm. I think that it would be a great idea to hold it at least once each day that way more people could participate or watch. As for the Fashion cosplay.... burn in trash...

Chess Cosplay sounds interesting would like to see how it turns out in the end.

Stage Zero... I have been hearing and reading up on this..... right now my only opinion is that it sounds like it has potential for 24 hr chaos. So my vote on this will have to wait till it is narrowed down a whole lot more.

Finally I have a question or maybe it's a comment... just know that I don't mean to offend anyone....

It was "Der Cosplay" because of "Dieter" as the host... If anyone is familiar with the SNL "Dieter" skit then it was appropriatly named when Brian was the MC. Now that he is no longer the MC shouldn't it just be called Fanime's Cosplay Masquerade? Unless someone is going to be a "Dieter"? which would be hard cause brian nailed that performance.

Just wondering cause I keep hearing "Der Cosplay" and Dieter isn't there so... Where is the "Der" coming from...

Like I said I am not trying to offend anyone... just was wondering....

Hey there!

Brian is planning on returning to host for FanimeCon 2006. We are still working out details, but it may end up being Der Cosplay :) I'm fine with it being called that if that's what Brian wants as the emcee.

Details pending...

Thanks!

Spirit, Ryu, and I were talking about chibi cosplayers before the masquerade started.  Here is a cosplay event idea.  How about a chibi cosplay gathering?  12 and under cosplayers gather.  Just think how many photographers and other cosplayers attend the gather just to see the kawaii cosplayers.

To bring more 12 and under cosplayers, on the day of the gathering, all 12 and under cosplayers get free admission for each paid adult.

Anyone with thoughts?

I really love the idea of Drive By Cosplay~! I think it would be great.

OH! I was wondering if you guys ever thought about giving our hall cosplay awards? Like, have a couple people be the judges and just have them go about the con, and when they see someone in a really great outfit or something, they can talk to them and them give them an award of some kind :3

I AM DEITER. WELCOME TO SPROCKETS.

At any rate, maybe if we had a Cosplay Balloon Stomp. It's played like so:

30+ or so cosplayers are given a balloon to fill up to a specified length. Then everyone is set loose in the room to try to stomp other balloons. When one's balloon is stomped, they're out. The winner is the last one to have their balloon popped/last one without their balloon popped.

My high school group at church tried it out, it's pretty cool, especially with the right music goin' in the background (LIEK ZOMG EUROBEAT N E 1?!?1/ONEDASH!?)

Uhh, my only complaint about Cosplay Chess is that it could take RIDICULOUSLY long. I haven't known a chess game to go shorter than 30 minutes, and HUMAN chess would most likely take a RIDICULOUSLY long time of standing around and the like.

I could be missing a fundamental detail; otherwise, I'd recommend more "fast-fix" games.

What about a cosplay scavenger hunt? It could be done as teams or individuals and you have to take a picture with/of certain characters, or certain objects and then come back showing the photographic proof.  The only thing is groups or individuals would need a digital camera to show the pictures they took.

I like the chess game idea, but it'd be better if we left it open to all cosplayers instead of those from a specific anime. It reminds me of a RPG Cosplay competition I saw, where the cosplayers were divided into two major parties and did turn-based fake attacks while someone toted up the damage for each side.

Also, I have a suggestion/question (sugi-quest?)

A friend of mine who might possibly be coming down to go hit Fanime with me and I were planning on cosplaying. Here's an idea I had: We wanted to do a choreographed cosplay fight. Now, we've taken martial arts for years, and we both know our strengths and weaknesses. My question is--
We wanted to bust this out on the main cosplay floor, so that it would take everyone by surprise and bring the "excitement" (har, har) of the sparring match closer to our fellow cosplayers.\. The fight would be in character, and we would (attempt) to fight in our character's styles. This would probably constitute me swinging around a boken of some kind, and my buddy using her barehanded fighting styles. We'd make sure that the area around us is COMPLETELY clear of all people, and we would not include anyone who bumbles in randomly and attempts to join in. I know that some cosplayers have gotten kicked off the floors for starting impromptu character fights, so this would be a warning-ahead-of-time thing. We could perform this little character fight every so often until we get tired (or bored) and then stop.

If the cosplay floor is indoors in a place where there isn't enough room, or if this is a complete no-no, then we can do it for the skit contest...although I get the feeling my terminally stage-shy friend will refuse.

i still like the cosplay chess idea. even if it does take forever. i mean, you SO have over 72 hours at fanime. an hour isnt that big a deal.

plus, speed chess requires players to make a move in 1 minute or less, with a 20 minute clock on either side, i think. that means at least 20 moves, or, if you have the brain of say, Nara Shikamaru, you might have 70-80 moves a game! just a little thing to think about.

i can make numbered, waterproof tiles. cant be too hard. linoleum is awesome. as for the clock, i can look some big pool timers or something online.

Admins, let me know if you want me to look for any of the required components. i work at a hardware store.

Re the Cosplay Chess: when I saw it at Sakura con and SacAnime, the moves appeared to be already plotted out, so that what you saw was not a live game, but almost a performance in itself.  THAT would be cool.  It may be able to be held in under 30 - 45 minutes.  The pieces would have to have a rehearsal before hand.  The chessplayers would call out the moves.  The pieces would move and if against another piece, have a battle appropriate to their characters.

Re: the Iron Cosplay idea (sorry, I didn't read all the posts through to this point), I like Iron Cosplay, I think it needs a large room so there's plenty of space between the contestants (so they're not crowding each other).  Plus the audience needs to be entertained while they're waiting.

Ah, how about a Scavenger Hunt-Iron Cosplay?  Everyone gets a list of items, they have to find said items within an hour (if we could get the dealers to participate, maybe, not necessarily volunteering items but we could place the items at a particular booth, the hunters need to find the right booth) then bring everything back and build a costume out of it.  Like a two part game.  Aw, crap, I need to think this through.

Is this sounding more like that supermarket sweep game?

It's late and I need coffee.  Plus I've been off the forums for so long and this setup is a little confusing for me.   ???

Woooo... I'm honestly not gunna read the previous pages to see if they said what I think already, so off I go to evaluate the suggestions!

The first one I didn't really understand, not because it's a bad description, but because it doesn't process in my brain.  Might wanna have a better title for it.  I'll try to look at it tommorow, when I'm awake.

The chess idea is brilliant, though we would have to have registered teams go and compete with each other.  Additional twist?  Probably that they would have the king be the only one able to move people around, and from that angle, assuming they are standing (akin to Harry Potter and the .... chamber of secrets... wow, almost forgot what it was called) on top of the tiles, it would be harder for the king to move around, giving an added amount of difficult.  Also we would have to have no one from one team able to talk to to the king.... more difficulty.

The third idea is a must.  It's a proven thing, and again, we'd have registration at least two months beforehand, but then it would probably work.  Interesting, fun, and a good thing overall.

Fourth idea is probably a no, because then you would need heavy administrative handling on that area.  I don't know the exact mechanics of the fanime administration, but then I'm not sure it would be entirely possible.  They would have to make sure that no one does anything dangerous, obscene, etc.

So that's my five cents.  Sorry for any repetitious info.

Anyways, I'll try to retype what I had posted before.

-Rubs chin for a bit to recollect.- ... I had said... This is a great idea. I normally wouldn't think much of cosplay chess as an event, as each time I've spectated, they were very disorderly and anarchic... which doesn't work in chess. Having a single person off the board and commanding pieces isn't any more amusing than playing actual chess, really, besides the fact that your pieces are live people... but the additional twist of BEING one of the pieces is a brilliant idea. The competitive pressure would also make the game more motivating to play, and perhaps even have people take it more seriously whilst playing. I don't see any reason why this cannot happen.

QuoteFourth idea is probably a no, because then you would need heavy administrative handling on that area.  I don't know the exact mechanics of the fanime administration, but then I'm not sure it would be entirely possible.  They would have to make sure that no one does anything dangerous, obscene, etc.

I don't believe Fanime administration would approve of this idea for... obvious reasons.

Don't apologize. So far, I find your posts very enjoyable to read.

Greetings my fellow Fanime goer-ians-nessness.  I was poked to come post here since posting this in another thread... dealing with the cosplay chess idea.

Well, since there is always a need for players there is also a need for a board, which .. is basically why I'm posting in the first place.  For, I have one .. its in a box needing to be cleaned oh so muchly.  It was made for AX chess and is now spreading across the land, or at least the the cons I go to.  Why? 'cause cosplay chess is fun.  So, if this idea gets underway then it'll be another happyhappy reason to haul it up on the fantastic five hour road trip of dooooom

and ~ here's a picture of it: http://www.chirigami.net/misc/finished-01.jpg
it's pretty big, I think like either 20-24 feet across?  And it has rings on each corner so it can be staked or tied down. Yaddayaddayadda.

yeeeeah, I'm going to like go blob now since I've had no sleep 8D
yaaaay schoooooool

Just an idea, kinda like monopoly or chess.  I saw this at a ren faire over the summer but why not make a gaint board game.  We could make a huge dice that you have to thow to roll (not something heavy of course) and the players move along a path(s) (maybe more then one direction like mario party) and on certain tiles they land on they have to be asked triva questions or do something silly (nothing illegal mind you or disgusting) or it effects thier player (lose in point, sent back to start, switch with another player, etc)

This could do in many different directions,  There could be points, or prizes.  Special items you get in the game that effect other players.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.  I kinda skimmed the pages.

My votes to the cosplay chess, however, we need a biiig place to place it in the fountain area, pluss, would be fun if people passing by see it, i mean-when i went to run to the nearby bank, there were people staring at the convention center muttering "what are those people?!?" I just informed them its an anime convention, and they went like "oohhh, that's awesome!"

The more attention it gets, perhaps it will attract more people to at least watch people perform their finishing moves outside of the convention center :D

Sadly, in the year when we were trying very hard to get it done, Cosplay Chess just seemed to end up being a logistical impossibility.

Though I can't say, for sure, whether progress was made on that in '07. I'd love to see that brainchild come to fruition.

eeeetou, The Ska_Kittie got in contact with me and we've been actually working on getting Cosplay Chess up and movin'.  She has given me and my group - since .. its our board - some space in the tabletop gaming room to host it and for multiple days if possible.  I'm still getting some things hammered out, I have school and an internship portfolio due soon so my time is limited for a few weeks T__T, but um... its now in the works?  She started a thread in the Gaming forum thing and things will be filled and and times will be blocked out and yadda yadda.  So.. yaaaay? xD;

I can try starting a thread here if you guys want.  But.. again, I'm busy with school so nothing is written out as of right now e.e;

I think cosplay chess would be good if the two people who are moving the pieces are on top of something high like a ladder.

Monopoly seems a bit too complicated to do because of all the things to manage (money, hotel, who owns what etc) Though this can be fixed if someone actually brought the actual board game and then played the same way you would the board game except with the big game outside. =) Hotels would still be a bit difficult to do though.

For the turn-based battle system, it depends how it's executed. In video games, it's okay because they can do some crazy stuff. However, in real life, it might look very stagnant.

You don't need a ladder or whatever for cosplay chess. Just bring the small game board outside and have leaders move the pieces corresponding to the live people on the large board.
You might not even need a board, just some 2' black square things for people to stand on (white color can just be the ground).

Has anybody thought of letting the con goers play Iron cosplay:
This is how the game is played:

2 teams will be called up to the IRON COSPLAY ARENA! There will be two "Mystery Boxes" waiting for the teams - Each filled with the materials they will need to create IRON COSPLAY!
The time allotted this 5 MINUTES! In this time you & your team will construct a costume based on the subject given (For 1 or ALL members of the team.) The materials available will be things like...
- Fabric scraps
- Glue
- Scissors
- Toilet Paper
and everyones favorite...
- DUCT TAPE!
(A BONUS material will also be inserted into the mix!)

They should have a banner outside the main hall that reads "Fanime Con '08," at least. That cosplay chess is a great idea too bad we can't play the "Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle" version of chess where it's 4v4 match.  ;D.

And seriously, they need to change the weapons rule about airsoft guns. They should like check everyone's weapons a day before the convention starts and still at least have an orange tip. Or, keep the cosplayers guns and they can just pick it up during the start of each convention. So, the staff wouldn't have to worry about the person loading it with BB's.

I had so many friends who were going to cosplay as Black Lagoon/Burst Angel but decided not to come because they didn't want to dress up w/o their guns!

I was the guy wearing the full tactical gear w/ an Umbrella patch/Pinoy Flag. (International Umbrella Merc.)
But that rule didn't stop me from carrying my Ak-47 on the last day.

You know what I learned, out of every staff member in the convention only one stopped me a douche bag :P who wore glasses and black/red attire w/ a dragon symbol on his back. :-X It's too bad my friends didn't go  :( they wear all prepared too, but tht damn rule just sux >:( >:( >:(

I'd like a workshop type thing where you can go if your outfit... breaks. Just somewhere with needle and thread and super glue that are available for quick fixes. My cosplay broke a lot and finding super glue was a pain :P

My votes are in for cosplay chess for sure :D It seems like fun and if we have more people to participate, it would be better.
Fashion cosplay...no
Fountain awards? No.

i think that we should do a " do you know that anime?" trivia game with contestants and can win prizes. ^^ also  ithink it'd be cool if we also did panel or something on making bento or like a cooking mamma thing..

I think it would be cool to have a Charity Date Auction. Have some of the money go to charity, as well as some of the money to pay for the date itself. You could set rules like 18+ only with Photo ID. I know one of the smaller Cons had that for their first year, and it worked pretty well.

well here is an idea thats coming to life, it is formal cosplay gatherings at the "Black and White ball" I'm starting one for the people that like Naruto. If others would like they could host a different formal gathering for a different anime this would be great because no one would be dateless and everyone would have fun with another person with the same intrest. :D
