this is an unofficial answer:

A fan event is an event or activity that requires resources that a normal panel room can't provide.
This is mostly what I believe constitutes the difference between the two. If I'm wrong, I'm sure our Fan Events and/or Panels department heads will gently (or not gently :P) correct me.

I might as well give my webteam update, since I thoroughly derailed this thread:
Emailed them, got a very prompt response, and they are looking into the issue for next year. For now I'll just have to make sure I have my stylus with me when I'm trying to access the website!
Yes, I see it on our webteam's list of issues to address. We have your contact and will reach out if we need assistance in verifying the fix. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Speaking on official capacity as a FanimeCon Director.

* We DO NOT share any identifiable information with third party companies. This information is also very limited to internal staff (and only on a need-to-know basis).
* What we do share is a very general demographic (gender, age groups primarily).

Hey! Good to see you addressing this, as I think it's important as well.

I also mentioned last year how lax the security was for our registration accounts online (the fact that you only need a zip code and email address, both very simple pieces of info to obtain, and you can gain access to more detailed information through it). I could effortlessly log into any one of my friends' accounts and review/alter their information without their consent if I wanted. I requested that maybe CMR (or whoever will be in charge of registration) consider using a user-generated password to protect this information, but that concern wasn't addressed for this year and it continued to be open for anyone to access. I'm hoping again that next year passwords are considered for online registration accounts.

The CMR website is closed, but I remember only being able to access very basic information. Having some sort of lock (not sure if password, some sort of security question, or what) is something that we're going to address.

I'll look into the privacy policy bit on our website as I thought we had one. In any case, we'll get it fixed.

For the registration fields, we had some fields (like gender) marked as required but there was a dropdown option for "Do not want to disclose" or something like that (I'm very tired from con still and can't remember the exact text).

[Edit: Got my field mixed up]

Thanks for the update to their name. I'll pass this information on.

I would suggest that they try to apply as a Fan Event (information will be put up on the website as we finalize the information).

We received your e-mail and will reply there. Thanks!

The badges are randomly loaded into the printers so there's a chance of getting one of the six designs. We have had five main mascots (humans) in the past, but starting last year we tried experimenting with having a single pet mascot (last year: rabbit, this year: penguin). It seems to be a big enough hit that we're going to continue having a pet mascot each year.

Random fun fact: The pet mascot has been my favorite out of the six for the last two years and next year's pet will probably end up being my favorite. XD

Hi all,
I still have to do grab numbers and do a small audit. I'll repost in this thread once I have a final number, but it looks like we definitely had an increase in attendance. How much is the thousand dollar question.

We got more buttons on the website thanks to the website suggestion thread, but I agree that the site needs to get its act together and communicate to us in some way what is happening and why there is so much of a delay. All we can hope for is that management next year will be better since they rotate every 3 years or so.

All that rotating staff means is that your con chair is a rookie every three years or so. It's a great way to ensure that nobody gets good at their job.

The staff doesn't rotate - only the Chair does and the Chair is always someone that has been a staffer for many years to ensure that it's not someone that comes in without knowledge of FanimeCon.

I have been informed that this functionality has been added.

Thanks,
Eric

Thanks! I'm glad to see that some other links are up there, too! I hope for next year they leave these up, because I know questions like "how do I apply for staff" are frequently asked (and I know there's never enough staff, so it's important to make it easy to apply).
For next year, the current plan is to just transition onto next year's theme without a silly one-page landing page.

(Also, as the Webteam's manager, I assure you that the fire under our butts are just keeping us warm. ;))

I don't know if the final page will be different, but the panelist page does not respond well to mobile. The viewport is locked, preventing the user from zooming in or out. This is fine on the splash page, since everything is fluid and responsive. However, the panels page has not been optimized for responsiveness, which is a tad disappointing.

(Hmmm.... Maybe I should apply to the web dev team next year....)
We did test on mobile devices, but the viewport issue wasn't there. Going to forward to our dev teams. Thanks!

[Edit: this has been corrected]

Locking this post so I can reply. I'll unlock it after I'm done replying.

[Edit: Unlocking now. For real this time.]

Going to make comments on random things here and there on dfens post. I'm hoping that these will squish some of the rumors going around and each and every one of you is free to always send me a PM.

- dfens post is largely incorrect. FanimeCon and Clockwork Alchemy each have their own budgeting and Clockwork Alchemy doesn't "take" any money from FanimeCon's budget. This wouldn't be a smart move as an ever growing convention such as FanimeCon usually needs more money, not less.
- The guests being "lame" is a separate issue that has been covered many times. There is simply no way of getting the "perfect" guests for each of our attendees, which is why we constantly make posts and reach out to attendees to see what type of guests they would like. Our GR team then uses that + market trends to get guests that we hope would be amazing enough for you guys to enjoy them. Keep in mind that although it happens, it's less common for people to comment when a guest is good than bad.
- No one on staff has ever denied that the registration issues were bad. I, myself, have commented many times that they were bad and that our registration staff has been spending this entire planning year on working on them. The current goal right now is to post a "what's new" on Registration so people can be familiar with the new space that it's moving into (as well as how the line flow will work).
- The comment about the FanimeCon convention chair wanting to put that "he ran 2 cons at the same time" is laughable as Clockwork Alchemy has their own set of convention staffers (including chair) and most of us don't work in industries where our convention experience is relevant enough to put on our resumes (although in all fairness, it's always a bit of a cool thing to bring up ;)).
- FanimeCon and Clockwork Alchemy do share the same registration backend. The Clockwork Alchemy registration was more of a soft test to see if it would work. If we had 25% of the people at the Fairmont over there and something massive happened, we would have been screwed. We know now what ended up happening at the Fairmont after the fact.

- The website launch is super late this year. I know it, the webteam knows, it, you know it, everyone else knows it. We're really close to launching with a *ton* of information. There's no real excuse for ever being late and it being under my division, I take blame.

You know that you can talk to me right? I've said this to you many times. We try to keep our staff from posting unconfirmed information since it often ends up being misquoted incorrectly (or as a "my friend works as a staffer and said this" post, which also happens way too often).

Hotel Changes for FanimeCon 2014

For FanimeCon 2014, we are trying something different in order to make booking a hotel room less of a headache and more fair for our attendees. It is now going to be a requirement for our attendees to have a FanimeCon 2014 membership in order to book a hotel room.

Woah, woah, woah. What?!

So now we're punishing attendees who don't happen to have cash in hand right now from registering from a hotel room? This makes sense to you how?! Hotel rooms sell out fast and not everyone is just sitting on enough cash to pay their badge registration fees right now. You're going to start excluding a HUGE number of your attendees. How is not having your badge suddenly grounds from excluding you from convention planning and hotel registration?

I'm sorry if this isn't exactly a coherent thought. But I've been attending Fanime for over 10 years and I LOVE this con. But this sort of thing feels like I just got sucker punched.

This is why we wanted to get this posted and highlighted as soon as possible. This is no way an attempt to punish *any* of our attendees that are trying to get a hotel room for themselves. This is an unfortunate change to prevent a loophole that some were using to reserve up to a dozen rooms by themselves and then attempting to resell or just cancel the room at the last second, which was causing a bunch of our members to be unable to reserve a room for themselves.

The hotel deposit won't be put onto your account until a month or so before the convention.

Sorry that you ran into this trouble - We'll look into this and if we need more information, we'll contact you (slumpy).
