sandstorm is not techno then? well what is it then pop? clearly its techno :|

Actually, it's not techno.  It falls under the trance genre.

If I hear that damn track again, it would be too soon...

I would like to hear a good mix of techno with disco, 80's , and hip-hop. I'm tired of the trance! Mix it up! PLEASE!

Only 1 DJ played trance last year, and that was me.  Everything else was breaks, 80's/90's, electro, techno, drum 'n' bass, house, kpop, jpop, and hardcore.

I want to hear as little rap as possible please. Sorry to those who might enjoy the genre but you can't dance to it and it's not even technically music. It's just glorified beat poetry and doesn't belong at a dance.

Trance, techno, drum'n'bass and happy hardcore are what belong at dances. Anything you would have found in the "Dance/Techno" section at a record store.

I'll bring the glowsticks, you provide the music.

I believe you have the wrong idea here.  Hip-Hop/Rap are often heard at dances all over.  High school dances come to mind as well as some raves, and I think I speak for the majority when I say that it is one of the easiest genres to dance to, not to mention one of the easiest genres to mix.

Dance is not limited to EDM.  As much as I would like to have all of these genres at Dance, I can't.  There is a push for more Hip-Hop, and since I am for the people, there will get more of it.  EDM is not going anywhere as long as I am here, but that doesn't mean I won't listen to the public.

So don't worry, there will be enough music to go around for everyone to enjoy.

Hrm... the rock/90s guitar stuff last year was kind of weird & hard to dance to. xD;;

I agree with the comment about having more Japanese music -- not just anime & OSTs, but also what's currently popular there. Also, I highly recommend expanding to other Asian music -- for example, Korea has a HUGE music/entertainment industry, and you should definitely look into Big Bang, DBSK, Epik High, Wonder Girls, BoA, Lee Hyori etc. A lot of people have made excellent remixes and mash-ups online like Aliks089 (here). I know a lot of people/my friends/I would totally flip out if 'Mirotic' or 'With U' (or other songs obv) was played at a rave. There's an entire world of kpop that has a ridiculously huge fanbase (see soompi's music section -- just look at the number of members online atm in the music section alone o_o) -- I'm surprised Fanime hasn't tapped into that genre of music since it's so popular.

At the same time, you guys should definitely have mainstream (aka typical high school dance stuff) too. Some congoers may hate mainstream, but there are a lot of us that enjoy it too.

So basically, variety in Asian music + Western music as well -- as long as it's danceable.

Just putting in my two cents! :3 Sorry for rambling~

There were some kpop played at this year's Dance.

I'm curious...Why would bboying not be allowed at Dance?  I mean, that should be the most ideal spot for bboying, right?  It is a dance after all, right?
Tight space? If you were trying to do a flip or something you might end up knocking other people out.

The last time I saw someone actually get knocked out from a breaker trying to do a power move was maybe 15 years ago, and it was clearly not his fault.  The last time I saw someone actually get hit was....10 years ago?

I can understand if there is tight space where it's not recommended for bboys to do such a thing, but if they got a good amount of space to do it, I don't see why they can't.  This year there was some bboying at Dance, and there were no incidents.

Hip-hop definite but not too much hyphy. Sorry. This might be the bay but as the we like to say: "Old school > Hyphy"  LOL

Couldn't agree with you more.

I need to holla at you sometime soon.  I want to try and work something out.  Jinnai also.

BTW, Stormy, you know anyone with some lights that is willing to let us borrow?

Edit: Disregard last quote 8 Ball....I should be checking my emails more often now...

I really enjoy something you can feel with your heart.
I'm not being cheesy. I mean when the bass is so loud, that you can feel it pumping through you.

Something fast, furious, and with serious bass would be awesome.
But a little of everything is cool too. :)

Ah, you mean like the pretty, fluffy trance?  Haha, I got plenty of that!  However, to be fair, I need to know what everyone else wants to hear, and it is really hard when no one says anything except for a small handful of people which is not enough.  Hence, making this thread so people can talk directly to me so we can have at little something at Dance that will appeal to everyone, not just a small group.

Hi folks!

I made this thread for the purpose of seeing what other genres people would like to hear at Dance this time around.  Also, if anyone has any questions or comments concerning Dance, please post them here!

Now is the time for you to be heard!  If there is a big push for either one of these genres, the better chance of that particular genre to be played at this year's Dance.

I did want Jinnai to make a return this year.  He was the first person I contacted.  I know for sure alot of people would have enjoyed him.  However, things just didn't work out.  Hopefully we can work out something for next year.

Now, as far as music selection goes, I think we did a good job.  We had house, electro house, drum n' bass, J-pop, breaks, a touch of hardcore, some 80's/90's funk/hip hop although I wanted more, but that's another story, and of course we had Stormy and myself along with DJ Jinrei and DJ Sandman with some of that good EDM.

What's in store for next year?  Who knows.  All I know is if there is a genre you would want to hear at next year's Dance, now would be a good time to make a push for it.  If there's a big enough push, I'll make it happen, but it's not likely going to happen if there is only 2 or 3 people asking for it like with hip hop this year.

DJ Reign's your hookup!  Holla if ya hear me!

Hey guys!

Thank you for all that attended at this year's Dance.

I have to be honest with everyone here, after Friday night, I did not think a lot of people would come back, but it turns out it was even more people than before!  And on Sunday, it was still a lot of people that stayed until the very end.  For those that stayed until the end, you guys are troopers!

I would also like to give a very big thank you to DJ Jinrei, DJ Sandman, Taskmaster, and the rest of Random DJ's for making this year's Dance a real success!

If anyone is curious about what tracks I played on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, feel free to PM me.  Hopefully I'll remember (I never write down my tracklist nor do I preset my list).

Now, I think it's about time I finally got some rest.

See you next year!

Atlus,

I was not being hostile towards you, nor did you offend me.  I simply stated what were facts, did so in a polite manner, you misunderstood me and thought I was being unprofessional and getting defensive which I was not.

I, too, get very annoyed when people identify EDM as rave/techno, when it is clearly neither rave nor techno.   If you are trying to make a request, please be more specific.  If you had made this more clear, you would not have misunderstood me.

Oh, and to answer your question, not only have I been a resident DJ at dance for 4 years, I am also the head of dance.

Thanks

Hey everybody, I havent read the thread history yet so far, so sorry If Im repeating others but I wanted to know if there is a place to directly request music, specifically the mixture of some mainstream hip hop, house, and dance music  ;D

I am sorry, are you requesting something specific?
Oh no I just meant those genres in general since its sometimes frustrating when the only music is rave and jpop for the entire event

When was the last time you heard jpop at the dance?  And what do you mean by rave?  That is a extremely vague genre that in most cases leads to confusion.
Im just going on what complaints Ive heard from previous dances, those being the main two

You know, I find that odd.  Not too long ago there was a poll on these forums about what music genres should be played.  80's/90's music was the most requested, however the 2nd most requested genre was techno/rave even though as I said before, rave was a extremely vague genre.  So, I do not see how that was a complaint when a lot of people were requesting that.

And I bet you would never guess what the least requested genre was.  It was rap/hip hop.

Oh, and FYI:  dance music falls under the "rave" genre.
