Its not too late to be staff OR a volunteer. Which are you interested in doing?

Is there a section of the site with more details on volunteering?

Most of the information in this section is a bit old, so a section on the main sight may be beneficial to people.

Hm...I think I'll go ahead and just repost this in the suggestions section.

I already posted in your suggestions post, and hopefully, Tony will update the website with volunteer information.

Usually, you become a volunteer (or vol for short) by signing up at the convention with Vol HQ. You'll need a member badge first, though.

As for staffing, we still need staffers. So, go ahead and sign up for the staff site and check off which departments you're interested in. The department head should contact you after that point.. The staffing will close before the con, so sign up now if you're interested..

...
I've been staffing since 2001 and guess what? I haven't signed up to become staff yet this year yet. I usually like to wait 2 months before the con because that's when things start to pick up. BTW we have a tradition at Fanime where all staffers get "fired" after the con so everybody must re-apply. So technically I'm not staff.

Don't worry, sit back and relax. We're 3 months out so there's still a lot of time. If it's 1 month before con-time and you haven't been signed on board yet then yes you need to worry. I lost count how many times I've staffed for anime cons and the first time it seems very haphazard, but after awhile you get used to how the system works. :D

^^;

We're trying to encourage them to sign up now so we have an idea of how many people are in each department. So if you're interested please contact those departments and see which one extends you an invitation. But please note that you can only staff for one department, so choose wisely.

Ooh, thank goodness. I was thinking that maybe I wasn't optimal... but of course, my age might have something to do with it.

[Ugh, if only I was born 5 months earlier. ]

It could be your age or your skills that get you passed over. Some departments have age minimums, others may require previous experience and certain skills sets that you may not have.

Don't worry, you'll eventually get paired up with a good department, it just takes time. =)

Who me? Do I look like a rebel.  :D

Back to signing up for staffing. Officially you sign up to become staff through the website. However that doesn't necessarily mean we run FanimeCon like a machine.

There is of course a "people" aspect to it.

It doesn't hurt to also email or PM the manager of the department you're interested in. And of course potential staff are also welcomed to attend the staff meetings. A LOT of managers like that. It shows that you spent effort. Sometimes there is no technological replacement for a real life human conversation. A potential staffer who does that would probably get "more hits" then simply pushing a dirty dozen buttons on a website. good luck ^_^

Not fair, you got better legs than me.

And yes, managers would like to meet their potential staff members face-to-face. It would be a little awkward to meet for the first time at con.

Damn, the only volenteer experiance i have is in hospitality and serving Staff members breakfast...why do you have no breakfast makers?!

I'm good at that sort of thing.

Volunteering is pretty easy if you want it to be. There are jobs of all skill levels for vols...if you dont have any skills, dont worry! We'll find you something to do ^_^

I'm good at that sort of thing.

I'll give you a free badge if you make my staff members breakfast throughout the convention. :P

[Edit: Didn't mean to send it the first time]

But seriously, there's always a staff out there for you... It's just up to what you want to do. No experience? That's fine. :)

And how! My first year staffing was as a department manager position. I didn't know anything about my department, but I think I did ok. It just takes hard work, determination and common sense.

I would also like to add that staffing and being a member are totally different things. I like being staff because I like the fact that I'm helping to put on a convention that is being enjoyed by thousands of people. I get to meet other staffers and become friends with them when normally I would never get a chance to meet all of them. You really get a unique experience once you staff and see things behind the scenes. Even though it's a lot of hard work, I think it's worth it in the end. Speaking for myself, who else can say that they got to compile a pretty nice, full-color program guide for 10,000 attendees, including international guests? I think that's a pretty cool thing to be able to brag about.

Sweetness....

Sorry to keep asking for stuff, but where would I find contact info on heads of the departments?

Pretty much anything on the first two lists would be fantastic.

There is both a "Staff" section and a "Contact" section.

Great, thanks a bunch!

But how would I get a hold of the people that aren't listed?

Like the person in charge of cinima and such?

Um...Im looking at the list here and theres one near the bottom marked "Video Programming" of which I am pretty sure Asian Cinema is a part of.

Also: Did you sign up for the staff portion of the website and explore that and follow all of the directions?

Actually Asian Film is it's own department.
It used to be a "part of" video programming back in the days when Asian Film was just 1 room. However it's grown in size over the years and is half the size of the video dept. now.

enough with the history lesson  :D

To contact the Asian Film department...send a PM to asianfilm

There's also a sticky thread in the video programming section of this board titled: "Want to work on the Asian Film Staff?"

That might be a good place to start for any prospective staffers.

Post by: Voiddarkness on March 27, 2007, 01:53:42 AM
Was wondering about the rumors on the masquarade ball.  Is there actually going to be some ballroom or swing (west coast or east coast)?  If so, I want to volunteer in this area.  I can lead and follow.  Also, I don't mind volunteering anywhere else.  I hope I can work off the entire thing on maybe the first day...possibly.

Void- Nothing is really confirmed on the masquerade ball I believe, but if you wanted to volunteer, you'd have to at the Vol Hol at the convention. ^^ I hear they are going to play some ballroom music and the like, too. The ball will be only about three/four hours... setting up might be done some other day. I don't know the specifics, but I would plan on volunteering on other things, too. ^^ You'll have to wait until it's pretty much all confirmed which may be in a month or so. I think that the person who is running the Masquerade is sort of running the Masquerade ball, too. You might be able to contact her through PMs if you really need to ^^.

So are you guys still accepting staff? I've been busy the past year, so I didn't have much time to plan for being staff again, and I only recently finally decided upon going to the con.

I think most departments would welcome the additional hardworking staffer. I know registration would. *hint hint*

Voiddarkness: If you are interested in volunteering then contact boots01 who started the Masquerade Ball thread. Angeljibrille is not in charge of it. Message boots01 and see what he says. As far as I know it is not confirmed as of yet. Krnchichiri is right though, you might want to volunteer in another area too. I'm sure there are a couple of areas that can still use the help ^^)

getting back to the original question...is it too late to sign up to become staff?

Short answer == no....But for anybody who's interested I'd strongly suggest that you start signing up TODAY. If I read my staff emails correctly the deadline to sign up is the last day of this month, April. Basically there is 28 days left.

Once again I'm not 100% sure.

However it's better to be safe then sorry...the time for procrastination is over.

see you at the con  8)

Don't worry, if you've signed up for the good ones who still need filling, you'll get a response. It's still a month away from Fanime, you still have time to get a response.

I've had to wait a few months until I got a reply. A lot of staff heads like potential staffers to be over 16... but there are quite a few people who are under 16 who still get recruited.

You can go to the staff meetings and beg the department's staff heads to let you in, or ask if it's available.
[My friend asked the Registration head if she could join, and it was fine. We're both under 16]. ^^

To deonchan- I'm not sure if they're open, but I believe that rovers have to be a certain age.. I think, 21? You might want to message the rover department heads and ask.

Rovers is normally required to be 18, but this year they're allowing some underage people apply also.  Rovers could always use more people.

Again if you're interested, the best way is to just show up at a staff meeting and meet up with one of the departments your interested in personally.

PS join rovers.

I don't see him on the forums much.  Rovers@Fanime shoudl work, but I PM-ed you another e-mail to try.  But definately try and make it to the next meeting.  Easiest way to leave an impression and show you're interested.

Rovers are stationed throughout the con and perform a large variety of duties from peacebonding weapon-props, handling lines for events, making sure Fanime and SJCC rules are being followed, and using a radio to inform higher if any problems that come up, such as medical situations.  They are usually the first and the most visible face of Fanime Staff to con attendees and so are also tasked with public relations.

Skills needed to excel in this position would simply be a good head on your shoulder to deal with anything that arises and people skills to interact with con attendees.

Hope that answers your question.  If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer them.

If you're interested in working for Rovers, I highly reccomed you show up at the staff meeting and introduce yourself to the department head.  It's the best way to leave an impression, and we could definately use a few more good people.

If you want to attempt to get in touch with the dep head a little earlier than the 21st, lemme know and I'll PM you an e-mail address.

Oh! Someone applied to publications! Sorry, I don't get notices letting me know that someone wants to join my department.

If you write well and would like to join newsletter staff, please e-mail [email protected] with a few writing samples. If you're going to panels, why not write about them and get a free pass in doing it? =)
