Tetris DS is 1 vs 1. Unless there's a crap load of players like 32... then it'll be four way prelims. I doubt it'll get to that point though... lol... who knows...

A Halo3 4v4?
A 2v2 would have probably been a better idea but whatever.

So just a few questions:
1)Is it going to be MLG Gametypes? For the love of god you better have MLG Gametypes...
2)How many screens/360s will there be? It will be horrible if we have each team split screening on a single 360.

I don't know If I will go it depends on who is playing at MusicFest on Friday, but I might as well find out and see if I want to actually gather myself a team.

For left4dead2 there will be splitscreened teams two ways, because conjuring up 8 360s, 8 TVs, 8 legal game discs seemed like a little too much. Plus, if we had that much we'd end up having two stations so we could play 64 man instead of 32 man.

Restrictions are a BITCH. I went through a lot to set the tournament up so it could get through because of the miserable failure last year.

&also,
is Stage Zero responsible for the Freestyle Rock Band this year?

For the record, keep in mind that there are tournaments that are being added to the list soon.  Currently, our staff has been research and analyzing everything to get everything up and running.  If your game is not on the list, that does not mean it won't be in there (or you can continue to bug us on the forum and we'll try to get in the time slots).

Rulesets should be coming soon.  If time issues are too complicated, feel free to discuss that; we may or may not change the times.

Xepherian: Talk to Stage Zero about Rock Band Freestyle.  I can't answer that at the moment.

wow,  the tournament list and schedule looks pretty good this year :).  The only thing I'm concerned about is the Halo 3 date and time.  I told many people about the tournament and they are only going to come on Sunday.  Many of them won't be able to make it on Friday and I'm sure many other people who were notified by their friends would want to play Halo 3 during the weekend, which are the busier days.  After all, Halo 3 is a popular game and if more people come to Fanime on weekends, wouldn't it be a better turnout for a tournament?

As usual, Fanime is going to be cool ;D but I'm sure many people don't know about the tournament schedule.  Lots of people will be disappointed if they find out that Halo 3 is going to be on Friday rather than the weekend, because I heard that many people just buy Fanime passes for the weekend only, which I heard is prime time for the event.  Halo 3 and Left 4 dead 2 are both really fun games, and I enjoy both  ;).  But I feel that Halo 3 is better for the weekend than left 4 dead 2, due to more people knowing of Halo 3 and it's popularity even today.  I'm not saying cancel the left 4 dead 2 tournament, but switching the times would be good for a lot of people.

Both tournaments are 4 v 4  at 5:00 pm, and both games are for the x-box 360, so it wouldn't be too hard to just switch the times of Halo 3 to Sunday at 5:00 pm and have left 4 dead 2 on Friday at 5:00 pm.

I personally love the tournament schedule and the game ideas for this year  :) but I think the Halo 3 tournament will be a lot better if it was during the weekend on Sunday, instead of Friday.

Super Mario Bros Speed Run Tournament Rules

General Rules:
1.) In order to enter, one of the E-Gaming Staff members must be present with a stop watch in order to keep time.  (Most likely me, Abe, and possibly Ken-Chan will be in charge of this.)
4.) We will most likely be using the original NES. So get use to the pad while you can!
5.) You cannot bring your own controller. We will have our own for you to use.
7.) Warp zones are legal.
9.) Wall jumps are legal.
8.) Glitches are illegal. This includes pipe glitches and walking through wall glitches.
10.) Power ups can be used.
11.) Killing Bowser with any power up is legal.
12.) Mario legs being invincible during the upward part of his jump is legal. Try to use it to your advantage.
13.) You can use as many lives and game overs as you like as long as you're under the time limit.

Prelims/Entry Qualification Rules:
1.) To qualify for the next round, you must make it from World 1-1 to World 4-1 in two (2) minutes or less. (FYI, the world record is ~1 minute)
1.) You have two chances to reach World 4-1 within the time limit.
2.) If you qualify on your first attempt, you have the option of making a second attempt to improve your time.  Your fastest time may be used to determine competition and play order in the following rounds.  By taking your second chance, you will not jeopardize your position in the next round.
2.) You are only allowed one slot in the following rounds.  If both of your runs qualify, this will not give you two slots in the following rounds.
4.) Any run over two minutes is automatically disqualified. This way people don't spend over five minutes trying to qualify.
3.) If you complete a stage with fireworks at the end, we will not deduct time from the run. So make sure your time does not end in 1, 3, or 6.
5.) Disqualification can happen to one of the runs or both.
6.) Warp zones are legal. So warping at World 1-2 to World 4-1 is okay.
7.) Using pipes are legal. So going into the bonus stage in World 1-1 to the end of World 1-1 is okay. As long as it's not a pipe glitch.
8.) Going on top of the roof in World 1-2 for the entire level is legal.
9.) The stop watch will start at the menu. We will press start and start the time at the in the same moment. During the black screen, that is when we'll hand you the controller.
10.) In order to continue onto the next round, you must have one of the top four times.

Semi-Final Rules:
1.) You and one opponent face off in a speed run battle at the same time on two different systems and tvs.
2.) You have one run to get from World 1-1 to World 8-1.
3.) You can use the warp zones at both World 1-2 and World 4-2.
4.) You cannot use the pipe glitch trick in the middle of World 4-2. You will be disqualified.
5.) You have 5 minutes. If the time ends and no one is at the goal, whoever is closest wins.

Finals:
1.) The final two face off.
2.) You have 15 minutes.
3.) Same rules apply from semi finals.
4.) You must complete the entire game.
5.) World 1-1 to World 8-1 is actually about the same amount of time as World 8-1 to World 8-4 (if you include warp zones), believe it or not.

Timing/Tie Breaker rules:
1.) Times will be minutes, seconds, and then milliseconds. So yes, we are including decimals.
2.) If there is a tie, the two of you will play SMB3 battle mode and the victor will move on.
3.) If only 3 people qualify, whoever had the fastest time will get a by.
4.) If only 2 people qualify, it will go straight into finals.

Tetris DS Tournament

Rules:
You are resposible to bring your own DS.
You are also responsible for taking care of your DS.
One game can actually cover 4 systems. So we shouldn't have a problem with not having enough games.
No time limit.
First player to get 2 wins advances into the next round. Best out of 3. (2/3)
Finals is first to 5. Best out of 9. (5/9)
We will try, 2 player battle unless they're are too many people
If they're too many people, the first round or maybe even the second round also might be 3-4 player battles.
Matches can vary from 2 to 4 players depending on the number of contestants.

Awesome!

You know, deep down inside, as much as I say I want to avoid it, I really want to make it a four way battle in the first round. Just to see the chaos that would happen between the players. Lol. The only way I can see it happening is if there was 24+ players though. Hopefully, a lot of people join in.

As for SMB Speed Run, as long as at least four people compete... I'm happy. Lol.

Ok. I just timed myself on SMB1. I didn't realize it took me 9 minutes to beat the game... maybe I was too rusty... so I changed the finals time limit from 10 minutes to 15. Should be more than enough.  :D

Hello! this is Chris Solis and we talked about Smash Brothers for Fanime. Here is what I can provide.

5 Wii's ( Cables and SSBB Games included)
2 TV's ( 1 CRT , 1 Flat Screen)
Event Management: Call matches and making sure the tournament runs smoothly. I need my crew with me though. We have ran many tournaments for many games especially SSBB.
How many other set ups will be provided by everyone else?

I hear we are running to SSBB events here is what I recommend for the game types.

1 v 1 tournament settings using MLG's game types ( best 2 of 3 single elimination)
2 v 2 items Items (Med) ( 1 game rounds single elimination)

In free for all there's always a camper and sadly he will win. That isn't fun but to keep the casual crowd happy we can have them enter as teams in an Items event. That way we eliminate camping and can still have an out of box Smash Brothers event! In the 2 v 2 I still recommend limiting the stages but more liberally. All legal stages should be on random and the random button should be used to select the stage. This way we get the chaotic Smash experience, eliminate counter picking for the casuals and still don't give player the opportunity to camp using stage glitches and large spaces. All rules in detail below.

NOTES:
- Turning off some items is a mistake because it affects how often other items come out, such as the smash ball. It's best to have them all on or all off for the best experience.
- 2 v 2 items instead of Free for All encourages teamwork and remains appealing to everyone while eliminating camping. I believe it the best causal format! My stage suggestion is up for debate.
- Items on High spawns to many smash balls. It makes the game about getting the smash ball and not about cleverly using the other items! I want to see all items used well so I recommend Med spawn rate. Basically how the game assumes how it will be played!

Open question to anyone (it's gonna sound stupid):

Haven't played DDR for 3 months due to broken toe. Should I still participate in the tourney even if I make a fool out of myself? With skirt and loafers too (cosplay)?

Yes, you should! :D

Everyone has their own way of playing, so no need to feel as if you're going to make a fool out of yourself. It's just for fun!

I've been in the DDR tournament scene for quite a while, and yes, I felt as if I could have done better. The point is to have fun, meet new people and get more experience in the game in general. I'd have to say the NorCal DDR scene (or what's left of it) has some pretty chill peeps.

I ended up placing 2nd place at last years Fanime tournament, lol.

Yeah, man. Its all about the experience and the community. In fact, a lot of the competitors are willing to help out when in comes to advice and tips in a lot of competitions that I've seen whether it's gaming or dancing or whatever. They support their kind so there's really nothing to be afraid of.  :)

hello chris,
yes we're holding 2 events, but 1 of them is not for the competitive gamer.  We have a standard 1v1 tournament, where you'll have to talk to the organizers of that tournament about rules and a 4 way free-for-all tournament that's designed to ruin any notion of fairness and serious competition.  I posted up the rules for the free for all already, so I'd like to keep that tournament as is.
I do, however, support the idea of converting the 1v1 tournament to MLG format to prepare people for the coming events, like the one in Ohio the weekend after Fanime.
I'd like to hear more than mewtwoking all day at the next MLG event, thanks.

Well, I know that people have to be competitive because, you're right, it's a tourney. But I'm talking about the people who can't do every well and start cussing and throwing a fit all over the place, and laugh at people who are new to the game, etc etc. I really don't like those types of people >.>

Hey everyone.

I'm looking for someone by the name of jtchinoy to discuss a proposition with him.  For a little background info, I ran the game room at Anime Los Angeles from '06-'09, then moved to run the game room at Anime Conji this year, and am currently in charge of it.

I've received numerous request from the attendees of the game rooms that I've run, as well as friends, to run a personal Tatsunoko vs. Capcom tournament at Fanime.  I know Fanime's planning to run one of their own, but the requests are for one ran by me outside of Fanime's events.  I'm planning on giving out a total of anywhere between $125-$200 in prizes with a meager entry fee of $2.  Anyone can enter it.

What I need to ask him is if it's possible to borrow 2 stations for about 2-3 hours tops to run this tournament.  I have all my equipment, namely Wiis and sticks, as well as tournament software.  None of this equipment would be liable to Fanime, however I have no intention of donating it for use after the tournament.  If borrowing 2 stations is not doable, then I have to figure out something else.  Hopefully that would be acceptable.

If anyone can give me a hand in finding this person, I'd really appreciate it. :)

Like I said, I don't need equipment.  I just need 2 stations worth of TVs and space.  If worse comes to worse, I'll just bring my own TVs, but it would be a lot more feasible to use 2 available TVs for a short period of time.

hi Kinshi,
We appreciate your interest in running another TvC tournament at Fanime for the fans.  Unfortunately, Fanime is an organization and we can't allow entrance fees at any of our tournaments.  All tournaments at Fanime have to have no entrance fees.  Entrance fees for cash prize tournaments can be categorized as gambling, and as such can't be held on the convention grounds.  We have recently turned down the offer to have an SSF4 tournament held with entrance fees as well.  Sorry about that. :(  If the guys running our TvC tournament are open to it you can assist them.

We don't have a problem lending you TVs to play your own games on, as long as you don't hold a tournament with entrance fees.

2 weeks! omg!!! X_x

(Since the red letters suggested I make a new topic instead of going the the main rule topic, I'm here -.-)

I read that no camping is allowed and yet sniper rifles are allowed. Would people just get to one spot and snipe? 'Cause in all technicality you're not camping, you're still fighting and shooting people; you're not staying in one spot not doing anything.

Camping is a tricky subject, but it is generally sitting in a single location throughout the game.
It should be noted that Camping is different from Setting up on a location. The latter is about controlling an area are forcing an opponents into it for your advantage. You will be in general moving in this area, so it is not camping.

Though to be completely honest as long as the gametype is balanced camping is all but impossible for all except superior players, in which case it does not matter if they were camping or not =P

I saw there's an Super Mario Bros. 1 speedrun tournament this year!

That's a tournament that's right up my alley. I've been playing that game since I was 2 years old. I'm 26 1/2 now, so that means I've got over 24 years worth of experience on this one game. I look forward to this tournament a great deal.

However, I have a prior engagement at the karaoke contest, so I MAY or MAY NOT be entering the speedrun tournament, depending on if I make it to the karaoke finals or not. But should I enter, I believe I may provide a formidable challenge for you all.

I've never been to a DDR tourney, but I've always heard that everyone is uber competitive so I didn't know if I was gonna get laughed at -.-

But if you say everyone is pretty cool and chill with it, I guess I'll participate.

Of course it has it's competitive edge... It's a tournament! But overall we're all there to have fun.

Even if you do get laughed at, laugh back. No need to be down on people's immaturity. ;)

I'm glad your participating. Feel free to come have a chat with me during the tournament! It's always good to meet a fellow DDR'er, lol.
Well, I know that people have to be competitive because, you're right, it's a tourney. But I'm talking about the people who can't do every well and start cussing and throwing a fit all over the place, and laugh at people who are new to the game, etc etc. I really don't like those types of people >.>

Are you cosplaying at all? I won't know who you are ^^;;;;

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I doubt the insanity level will get THAT extreme, lol.

No, no cosplay for me this year, but I'll be in a panda hat the day of the tournament. I'll be sure to scream out "WHO'S amaya_JDB!" before the tournament starts. :D

EDIT: Also feel free to enter the DDR freestyle exhibition right after the PA tourny... LOTS AND LOTS OF FUN!!!

Is there by any chance a rumor that Aksys will be back and showing off DeathSmiles?

I saw there's an Super Mario Bros. 1 speedrun tournament this year!

That's a tournament that's right up my alley. I've been playing that game since I was 2 years old. I'm 26 1/2 now, so that means I've got over 24 years worth of experience on this one game. I look forward to this tournament a great deal.

However, I have a prior engagement at the karaoke contest, so I MAY or MAY NOT be entering the speedrun tournament, depending on if I make it to the karaoke finals or not. But should I enter, I believe I may provide a formidable challenge for you all.
You got no competition against me, I could only beat the game using Fire Flower. Yeah, I suck... Luckily, I'm one of the hosts. But I hope you can make it!  :D

We currently don't have any bars installed in the pads being provided for the tournament. So definitely NOT. I prefer no bar anyway. ;)

New rule changes for Super Mario Bros. Speed Run.

1.) No time will be deducted for fireworks.
2.) Time will start at menu when the start button is pressed.
3.) Decimals will be kept in and not rounded up. So milliseconds will be involved.

Geez, for a game this old, you wouldn't think it would be so complicated lol. I'm wondering how many people will actually join this tournament... Also, anybody have any suggestions for speed run games in future cons?

HEY GUYS SORRY I'M LATE :<

I'm finally here to post the rules for Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Singles) and Tatsunoko VS Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Singles Rules

-Each match is 3 stock, 8 minutes.
-Best 2 out of 3 matches. Grand Finals will be 3 out of 5 matches.
-Single elimination.
-No stalling. This means intentionally running away from your opponent for long periods of time. This also means that chain-grabbing to stall for time are not allowed.
-Meta Knight's Infinite Dimensional Cape is banned.
-If a game ends with Bowser or Ganondorf using a Sacrificial KO (with Flying Slam or Flame Choke respectively) and the game is tied, then any Sudden Death is ignored and the Bowser or Ganondorf player is declared the winner.
-Items are set to OFF and NONE.
-Odd-stage in/Strike Rule: When the match starts each person takes turns picking a neutral stage they don't want the first match to be played on. The neutral stages open to pick are:

Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville
Yoshi's Island

-After you lose the first match: Tell the other player what level you are going to, they can switch characters, then you can switch characters.
-Counter Pick Stages are:

Lylat Cruise
Pokemon Stadium
Luigi's Mansion
Castle Siege
Frigate Orpheon
Pokemon Stadium 2
Rainbow Cruise
Brinstar
Halberd
Delfino Plaza
Pirate Ship
Corneria
Brinstar
Distant Planet
Port Town Aero Dive
Norfair
Green Greens
Yoshi's Island (Melee)

-Counter Pick Rule: When picking a counter pick stage, a player may not select a stage that they have already won on in the current set.
-Ties/Timeouts will be decided by:
1. Stock left
2. Percentage left
3. Sudden Death
In that order. If a winner can't be decided by the first method, we move to the second, if that fails, we move to the 3rd.
-Advanced Knockouts: After any player wins their first match in a set they must chose 1 stage from the counter pick or neutral stages. That stage is banned for the remainder of the set.

Tatsunoko VS Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

-Each game is set to 99 seconds.
-Best 2 out of 3 games.
-Single elimination.
-When playing a set, the winner must stay as the same team while the loser may change.
-Please sit on the according side you are playing on (in other words, if you are 1P, sit on the left, etc.).

For both tournaments, if you bring your own controller, PLEASE be responsible for it. We will provide a controller if you don't have one.

And...that's it. If there are any questions, feel free to ask. :3

To make it easier for everyone to access the tournament.  I wasn't aware it was possible to level balance until I went to VGC.  This would've been nice to know when we had the 1v1 tournament last year and 2 people couldn't play because they were still in the 60s.
If you have any objections, let me know.  This shouldn't take from people who've leveled up their pokemon and it should allow people who haven't been able to get much higher than 50 to enter as well.

Whoops.  I should probably post up something for the 3rd Strike rules...

Okay, let's see.

Double elimination.
Best 2/3 matches.  (Finals may be 3/5 pending time and how much the finalists want to play 3/5).
Winner of match must keep character, can change super art.
Loser may switch character and super art.
Gill is BANNED.  No questions asked.
No handicap pre-match.
Guard Version:  Old (Version A in arcade, unblockables present).

If anyone asks me to ban Chun-Li, I'm going to laugh at you.  I'm going to laugh loudly at you.  And then seed you against a Chun-Li player.

...

Okay, I won't do any of that, but Chun stays.

Mattison, if there's anything I need to add, let me know.

As long as we have a few Xbox and games, we will be running it for both systems.

We will not be providing TE sticks for public use.  You can bring your own stick, or if someone is generous to loan you their stick to use. And I don't believe there would be any reason that we wouldn't have SSF4 running on the consoles during non-toruney times.

Title: Re: Fanime eGaming 2010: Console and PC Gaming Events

Item clause means only 1 of each item per team
sleep clause means u can only put 1 pokemon on ur opponents team to sleep at a time. Ur opponent using rest doesnt count as their sleeping pokemon
species clause is only 1 of each pokemon per team
self ko clause is if a draw occurs due to self destruct or explosion. The user of that move loses

More questions about the pokemon tourney rules.  As i recall from last year, Garchomp was banned but this year he's ok...i guess.  There was also a rule last year about certain movesets that were banned that I would like to call "stalling moves" such as double team as an example.  Does that apply this year too?

Basically any move that raises/lowers accuracy/evasion is banned.
Garchomp is unbanned because Nintendo thinks it's balanced. And apparently Tyranitar isn't.

Nintendo thinks they know what they are doing...

Title: Re: Fanime eGaming 2010: Console and PC Gaming Events
Post by: JTchinoy on May 23, 2010, 12:37:04 AM
looking over the rules, i didn't include an evasion clause.  double team is allowed.  i ignored the evasion clause simply because double team isn't very effective in doubles.  i can't really offer you tips, but i can assure you there are several pokemon that make evasion clause fairly moot in double battles.

yes, garchomp's allowed in doubles format.  the effectiveness of tanks and garchomp are diminished vs. 2 opponents.

no soul dew, but latios/ latias are allowed.

any other questions, feel free to ask.

i don't strictly follow smogon rules since they focus on singles format.  they don't even have a dedicated section to RMT 2v2 teams.  i also feel item clause removes tank heavy teams and requires more thought in the items instead of saying leftovers on 4 pokemon.

Not sure about that, but who would run a team of Dittos anyways in a tournament?  Wasting 1 turn and depending too much on what your opponent's line-up is... ummm yeah, you get the point.  :P

We somehow digressed from the topic quite a bit.  btw out of curiousity, is it ok if we switch out our teams between matches, or we going with 1 select group of 6 throughout the entire tourney.

No switching.  Unless you'd rather opt for 2v2, 4 pokemon teams at which point i'll allow substitutions.
You may switch your leads between matches, naturally.

Hi everyone. Nice to see some familiar faces here.

First post, sorry I'm n00b.

Let me introduce myself. I'm Mark "MarkMan" Julio from Mad Catz & SDTEKKEN.

I'm trying to get in touch with the Fanime gaming staff heads in attempts to sponsor/provide prizes for some of the tournaments. I'm going to be in town for business this coming weekend and would love to support the events.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? You can contact me at [email protected] ! Thanks!

I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting some of you guys on Friday (probably the only day I'll be at Fanime).

Take care everyone! Thanks!

MARKMAN!!! Do you have any of the TE wrenches? I know you were giving those out at other events and wanted to know if you had any left.

I really want to go to NorCal Regionals but I am already committed to Fanime.

Just looked it up, 10 miles.  here's the convention address: 150 W San Carlos St, San Jose, CA 95113

The convention center has parking, which is $2 an hour or something I believe.

Do you think you can help with a TE stick for our Tekken tournament on Sunday?

I'll see you Friday and at NCR. :)

Technically, that won't happen as JT mentioned.

Even if players are able to connect to the Wii with their Pokemon Games, With games like Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver coming out after Battle Revolution and there has not been a technical update for it, there has been reports about compatibility issues.  Features that may exist in P/HG/SS may not be accessible in Battle Revolution.

lols if we do the final battle on Pokemon Battle Revolution.

Yea that's why its LOL, but as you mention about compatibility info, the game just doesn't allow you to use the pokemon straight up.  or as the game likes to read it, its still an egg.  good luck everyone
