Hi All,
I thought I'd make this thread to see if anyone had some good suggestions for Asian Films year. I'll take suggestions til Feb 15th, after that squeezing anything in will be far too painful. I'd have made this sooner, but really I only need a few films to round out my list.
Please don't suggest any movies pre-2008, or films that were shown in the last couple years. I will not play Battle Royale.
Cheers,
Josh
Oops, I didn't see this until now or else I would've suggested some movies.
If you're still taking requests, I'd suggest:
White on Rice [Japan]
Overheard [HK]
Breathless [Korea]
Yang Yang [Taiwan] (not a personal favorite, but it's a good movie)
Fish Story [Japan]
All About Lily Chou-Chou [Japan] (maybe pre-2008?)
The Equation of Love and Death [China]
All Around Us [Japan]
I don't know what you've played in the last few years, so I apologize if there's any overlap.

Fish Story is already on the list.
All About Lily Chou-Chou is probably going to be one of the throwbacks we're showing. (BTW that's 2001)
Overheard, I don't want to overload on Louis Koo. He's already in a number of movies this year that are on the list.
Breathless is a "possible" on my list.
if I have a chance I'll look into yang yang, all around us, and the equation of love and death. it's a tad last second though.
thanks for the suggestions.
cheers,
josh
Adrenaline Drive - Japanese film kinda old but I like it :P
Oh god yes to White On Rice, great movie I think
White on Rice = Not an asian film...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892904/
Visage (2009) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1262420/
Mei Lanfang (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0851532/
Visage especially. Every year I make a plea for these kinds of films to be included and they usually aren't, but I'll try again this year.
future Cop (1994 hk)
I think Crows Zero 1 and 2 would be a great back to back showing. Both are excellent Takashi Miike films, although I'm sure a lot of people have seen them already. Part 2 should be available with subs by now.
Also great:
Azumi 1 at least, maybe 2.
Attack the Gas Station (hilarious Korean film)
All of these are older films, so I don't know what the policy is on that, but the above films are all pretty excellent (except Azumi 2).
Well, as long as we're still going (even though I think failure has stopped taking requests by now):
Au Revoir Taipei: a pretty typical and cute Taiwanese film, rather good for a first feature film.
The Message: A whodunit film, with espionage (and torture).
Forbidden Door (Pintu Terlarang): Not sure what the policy is on Southeast Asian films, but this is a fairly decent horror film from Indonesia.
Dear Doctor: A dramedy about a man being mistaken for a country doctor.
I missed the screening of "Fine, Totally Fine" I think last year...please play it again if you have it.

Part 2 is available and B2B showings would be FREEKING AWESUM and smart!
Next year you guys need to show the Crow Zero movies :(
How about something by Akira Kurosawa?
we serioulsy need to update this thread
Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler
Pair this up with the first season of the anime(and the second season once it starts in april), and it is a guaranteed win.
GUARANTEED.
So, how about that Crows Zero 1 and 2 showing?
Also, Detroit Metal City, obviously, and Space Battleship Yamamoto would be a good one as well. Also, if they can be nabbed, Takashi Miike's last year entries, 13 Assassins and the second Zebraman movie. These would also be great to watch.
I put this on the video thread, but I'll put it here, too, if you are still taking requests:
Antique (Korean movie, based on Antique Bakery)
Bruce Lee, My little brother
Battlefield Baseball was pretty epic.
just watched Kibakichi which is more or less one of those films that's trying to have a serious story to it but it's just so tacky you can't help but laugh.
I would love to see "My Darling is a Foreigner" ! If you do show it, can you show it on Saturday?? Heeheee :)
Cyborg Girl [JP]
A Millionaire's First Love [KR, 2006] It's older than 2008 but I want a chance to watch it :P
Baby and Me [KR]
Taiyou no Uta [JP]
Nana [JP]
Hello Schoolgirl [KR]
100 Days With Mr Arrogant [KR]
200 Pounds Beauty [KR]
My Sassy Girl [KR]
I personally don't really care how old the mv is as long as it's good! I don't know much about movies though, lol, I just watch dramas
Anyone else wanna watch trainmen?
Love to see some Asian American films on the list myself. I suggest movies like "Fruit Fly" and "All About Dad" unless there'd be some copyright issues in which case you can completely disregard my post.
Working my way through the backlog of replies. I will say that the schedule has been completed and will be announced in the coming days.
As for the replies, here goes:
It's kind of tricky with those due to copyright. Also, the goal of the room was always to promote the latest films coming out of East Asia.

This was on the film schedule in years past, and with its popularity and our department's goal to promote newer films, I am not optimistic of this film's chances of showing up on any future schedules.

Most of these have either been shown in previous years or have been licensed. We do have a lot of newer Japanese films that are on our schedule this year, though, so I do hope you will enjoy those!

We didn't put this on the schedule this year, but we can consider it for next year's room.

Hella stoked for the Asian film room! ;D In the previous FanimeCons I went to, it was like the best kept secret for people in the know.
Probably not really a secret anymore, seeing as how asian film fandom has drastically increased over the past decade, but it'll always be my favorite screening room.
I'd like to see more films starring Abe Hiroshi next year. He's like my hero, hahaha.
I was a little bit disappoint as to how few horror films there were,
which was a main reason I wasn't as interested in the Film Room.
I'm not really a romance comedy kind of person, and there are probably more
fans out there thinking the same thing,
can I suggest more films like Three Extremes or the original Juon series ?

I've not actually seen any Asian-American films at Fanime, ever. Has there ever been any in past years?

YES!
Just don't put the screening at 5 a.m. in the morning when most people will miss it.
You know I always walk by this room and no one is ever in it. I think because it always seems to be some kind of serious drama that most people will not be in the mood for in a fun convention setting. I think you should consider doing more crazy sci-fi kind of movies, like "The War in Space" or even better, all 5 episodes of MST3K where they watched Gamera episodes.
Any chance of seeing the live action Rurouni Kenshin movie?

I'm hoping Thermae Romae will be showing this year.

THIS.
I'd love to see both Rurouni Kenshin and Thermae Romae! I've heard fantastic things about both films and have been waiting for them to be shown in the Bay Area.
Rurouni Kenshin was good! I saw it in LA! Wouldn't mind seeing it again, hahaha.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
@virilevocalist, that's cool! I was really lucky to see this in Tokyo last October when I was on vacation and was blown away. I got excited when they said it would be shown at EigaFest in LA since I was expecting it to get a wider release after that. So bummed that it hasn't been and that the DVD that's available doesn't have English subtitles. :(

Get a malay version. i got this for myself and it does have English subtitles.
also a few updates about the requests:
Kenshin: As long as it is unlicensed. As of today; i see no information saying that it is ... BUT there are sources saying that it is in the process...
Thermae: unable to find a copy with eng subs for sale. Not sure if this is an issue however.
PLEASE show the live action Rurouni Kenshin movie at Fanime!
Would we be able to watch either Painted Skin: The Resurrection or Tai Chi Zero?

Yes... and No. A few of them have been changed, but Kenshin, Ace Attorney, & Thermae are all there still.
Yay for Painted Skin and Taichi Hero AND Taichi Zero! Hope I'll be able to get to these! Going to be a busy weekend!
Omg yes, Ace Attorney and Kenshin(I do love me some Takeru Sato)! Hope I can make it to at least one of them!

Asian film room ideas for 2014:
Antique (2008 Korean) (I know it's not 2010+ but I'd really like to see it)
Ai Ore! (2012 Japanese)
Gantz and Gantz II Perfect Answer (2011 Japanese)
The live action Black Butler movie maybe?
Also any chance of showing J or K dramas at the convention?
Antique (2008 Korean) (I know it's not 2010+ but I'd really like to see it) (Kirariken: Considered. I will see if i can get a copy and fit it in.)
Ai Ore! (2012 Japanese)(Kirariken: Considered. I will see if i can get a copy and fit it in.)
Gantz and Gantz II Perfect Answer (2011 Japanese)(Kirariken: cannot show these as of right now)
The live action Black Butler movie maybe? (Kirariken: That released just in January. I will keep watch if we can get a copy)
Also any chance of showing J or K dramas at the convention? (Kirariken: actually, i believe we use to show some but due to low participation, we dropped it.. i am considering adding some to Thursday's line.)
Just curious but are Asian films that have been licensed and released in America not eligible to be shown because of copyright and or/screening rights?
in short, yes.
