Title: OFFICIAL Cosplay Spectacular 2012 (Masquerade) UPDATED 5/19/2012
Post by: angeljibrille on February 13, 2012, 07:28:02 PM
5/19/2012:

The database is now closed.

Confirmation letters have gone out, and Craftsmanship Judging has been assigned.

Please drop me an e-mail ASAP to let me know if you need to drop out.
You can e-mail [email protected].

A few reminders:

You must check in at the convention! Please check in on Friday or
Saturday and turn in your music.

Our hours and locations are listed here:

http://www.fanime.com/events/masquerade/

If you can no longer do a skit, but want to be a display entry as a
part of our Fashion Show, please let me know. This means you will go
right at the start of the Masquerade, and you will have about 30
seconds or so of music as you walk on, pose, and then walk off the
stage.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or comments!

We can't wait to see you at FanimeCon 2012!

Best wishes, Marisa Price

Excellent!! :)  I can only imagine what sort of fiddling is going on in the background to get the logistics established...

Regarding the time..assuming that the 2:30 includes getting on and off, we should probably not make the audio longer than about 2:15-2:20? Or is 2:30 audio acceptable? I'm actually fiddling with audio now for our planned entry, and this will help us immensely :)

Also, any ideas on what new restrictions will come up about props that you can share informally?

Cool, can't wait for things to revv up this year.

But for my skit idea, I was curious about the lighting. When the lights are off will it be completely pitch black? Because I kind of need it to be very dark.

Yay you're back! Woo hoo! 8D
I had an awesome experience last year.  :)

Couple questions...
Quote from: angeljibrille on February 13, 2012, 07:28:02 PM

2. Rules are basically the same as last year, but there are going to be more restrictions on large props and background again, because we are having a lot of problems with people not breaking down stuff fast enough backstage.

Can you clarify this? My group has some large prop/set ideas to go with our skit and I was wondering if we could get specific dimensions so we can plan sooner rather than later. ^_^

Quote from: angeljibrille on February 13, 2012, 07:28:02 PM3. Skits are still 2.5 minutes (this is a hard timer! include getting on and off stage!)

This is a little disappointing. I know last year the 2.5 minutes did not include set-up/tear down. Is this because of the time the pre-show eats up?

So for the new time rule, if we want the music to start when we're on stage, do we have to build in that silence to the beginning of our music or are the tech people still going to start it when they see us ready?

I've got a couple of questions -

"If you register as a walk-on, you will be in the Fashion Show portion at the start of the Masquerade (and you must compete for craftsmanship)."

What is qualified as a walk-on?  Or is it possible to do a one-man skit?  But if I decide to simply do a walk-on, are walk-on's allowed to have music for their walk on or nah?  I know in the past they were allowed, but not sure if that's changed.

"We will have video available again this year, but again you need to have your music embedded in the video, you can have either a video OR music: not both. The video and/or music starts with your skit and plays the entire way through, we will not pause it for you."

When you say you can either have a video OR music, you simply mean we can only submit a video file (with included music), or an audio file correct?

With this mentioned, a bit of feedback: The preshow? I have very VERY mixed feelings with. On the one hand, I've liked the acts. On the other hand, the acts were on WAY too long, needed their own extended teardown when they were done, which takes time, and really are deserving more of their own show than to be the "opening" bit for the Masquerade show.

I know that Masquerade probably has very little control over this, but I wanted to bring it up because I've yet to see such a long lead-up to any other masquerade event. My perspective is this: The sooner we start the show, the sooner we finish, and the sooner contestants can tear down and get out of the theater. The sooner we clear out our things so the staff can close things down, the less chance Fanime pays extra fees for going over-time and not getting out as scheduled.

So if we do plan on having simple props, as long as we can tear them down and get them out in 5 minutes or under, is it safe to assume that we'll be okay?

Is there an email we can contact for asking specific questions about participating in the masquerade or should they just be posted here? I looked on the Fanime website and couldn't find one. :c

You do not have to perform correct?
You can just do a walk on and be judged for craftsmanship correct?

2:30 is fine; but we will cut anything that's longer than 2:30. :)

The super huge backdrops of doom are causing us a lot of logistical problems. The major problem is that people do not tear them down immediately after their performance, instead they scuttle out into the audience.

1. The backdrops, huge props (like a boat from One Piece), etc. need to be easy to setup AND dismantle. If they aren't, we aren't going to allow you to use them.
2. These items *must* be taken down immediately  after your skit and then picked up and moved from backstage during the judging portion of the event. If they are still backstage when the judges are judging, we will disqualify the group.

We really want to encourage people's creativity and the neat backgrounds and such are great :) However, we had a ton of problems with this last year, and I actually had to yell at people which made me a sad panda. Every minute we are in the theater after the event costs FanimeCon a ton of money, and so we have to get out during our union contract hours.

It's not really pitch black, but the audience can only see shadows. It's pretty darn dark.

This is a little disappointing. I know last year the 2.5 minutes did not include set-up/tear down. Is this because of the time the pre-show eats up?

So, we pretty much had each and every group use the entire 2.5 minutes. Because of that and EXTENSIVE setup time for some groups (some groups didn't really realize it, but just their setup was taking 2-3 minutes... the length of an entire skit). This pushed out the time of the event too far and we were pressed for time for awards, which frustrates a lot of people (and the judges).

Read up a couple of posts, and it explains what I'm going to ask for as far as props go.

As far as time, I think I'll edit that a little bit. You can have the entire 2.5 minutes for your music, but we are seriously going to limit setup time. If you can't get everything set up and off the stage in 30 seconds in rehearsal, we have a big issue. It's not fair for me to give a simple skit 2.5 minutes (because they get on and off the stage quickly), but a big backdrop / prop skit is getting more like 5-6 minnutes.

The only other resolution is to trim the even to something like 30-35 entries, and I really don't want to do that because we like to encourage even newbie / low tech cosplayers to have a fun time doing a skit.

Yep, you sure are. You can either provide your own, or we'll give you something usually the theme song for whatever your costume is from.

Yes! However, JUST IN CASE we can't play your video file for some technical reason, I suggest also bringing us both the video (with audio) and an audio file (mp3, etc.) backup.

This year I begged for a much less complicated pre-show, and we did get it. I can't announce it yet, but it will be much quicker and no setup/teardown. I believe that Hideo is being scheduled as its own event elsewhere, but I don't have details.

You can have as much time as you need to break them down backstage, but you need to do it right after your performance, and it needs to be torn down and removed from backstage by the judging period.

Well according to this post, it does seem like they're both on the same night. :C Which makes me kind of sad, as I was also looking forward to both, haha. But I agree, I'd choose the Masquerade too! :3

The Black and White Ball will be on Sunday. May 27, 2012 from 6p-12 midnight.  For the past 3 years, the BWBall has always been on Sunday night with dance lessons (from Friday til Sunday) leading up to the event.  I hope that helps.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the screens on the sides show a zoomed-in view of the cosplayer(s) if no video is submitted, right? As in, the camera view follows the performers around the stage?

This is more than fair. I'll make sure my propmaster keeps this in mind when he's designing things, though we've had to keep our stuff pretty compact of late for travel purposes, so it may not be as hard as it might appear.. :)

I was curious about the video and audio submission. I found a video online that I wanted to use, but I need it to play about 15 - 30 seconds into my skit.  Do I have to make a special request for this? And also do I actually need to make the video with my audio or can I submit them as two separate things?

You need to submit them as one thing; if you submit them separately we will not accept it. We will take a backup CD of audio only in case we can't play your video.

Also, you can't have it play 15-30 seconds into your skit. When you get on stage, we start the video and we play it until it ends. If you need 15-30 seconds, plan on inserting blank space on the video (like a logo maybe).

And, of anyone is curious, the two screens we use for Masq are widescreen (16:9) and do HD natively.

Thanks!

In the past, judging starts around 2pm Friday to the early evening- Saturday 10-12pm (LUNCH!) then 1-5/6pm- Sunday is suggested for people with costumes with complex make up, or really difficult to put all together and take off.
I *think* they may have been combined- sign ups with judging slot sign ups. It might have been that when we officially sign up and get approved- we go to the next step. I DO know you got three choices for slots ^_^

So I have some questions as it's been years since I last attended Fanime.

Is there a size limit to walk-on groups? The size limit for skits says twelve, is the the same for walk-ons?

Also, are there special rules about entering children? My group would include a babe in arms, and two toddlers under 5.

The rules from last year that I have (printed them out for general reference and the understanding of changes) just says that those under 18 need a permission slip from the parents. If the parents are part of the entry, I would figure at worse you'd just have to fill out those forms alongside of the regular paperwork. :)

Judging will be on Saturday and Sunday. I don't have the time blocks set yet, but if you need something specific - please request it when you register (on April 1). I'm re-doing the database this year, so you should be able to register for both at the same time. :)

You could potentially do a 12-person group! :) And there are absolutely no special rules about entering kids, other than needing to fill out the 18&under waiver. In fact we even have two prizes aimed at the 14& Under group. I'm probably going to dress my 2-year old up and make him run across the stage anyway :)

Also, if you have younger kids who want to participate, but who are doing their own skit, you are welcome to stand backstage with them, then you can go sit and watch the rest of the show (or head out if your kids need sleep - we'll mail the award to you if you win!). We do make sure to put you right at the start to make it easier on you if you need to leave. We will make sure both the direct family (parents & siblings) have passes so you can come in at rehearsal time.

hhmmm. ok so I've been debateing this, and I was wondering what really qualifies as a walk on vs a skit? I mean I know there are some obvious diffrences, like the speaking and extremly well coriographed dances.

mainly, I'm going to be doing my wedding yuna cosplay, and debuteing my Valefor plushie prop. (which my friend is going to control) and I was thinking that I'd so some sort of make-shift summoning, thing, since I can't move much in my dress, and it would be shorter then a normal skit.

I'm worrie about when I'm registering whether or not I should say its a skit thats kinda lame or a walk on >.<

Hi! When can we expect answers to questions we've emailed you? My friend and I are trying to figure out if some costumes we're making are within the rules for this competition and we are hoping we can find out soon since signups are only about two weeks away.

A link to an unformatted version of last year's rules is located here if you want a general idea of things:

http://www.2011.fanime.com/cosplay/#masquerade

Bear in mind, these are last year's rules, and there will likely be changes, not the least of which will be the new rules in relation to props. Also, I'm guessing that the schedule will change if the earlier post about only Saturday and Sunday judging hours this year. But if you take this with a rock of salt, this is a good idea of what to expect.

I've just been informed that Cosplay Spectacular has been assigned to Sunday this year. More details to follow soon.

Oh, it's on Sunday again.  Is that going to be a permanent move, or is it just subject to change every year?

I sent it again a few days ago but I have yet to receive a reply. I suppose I'll ask here then. Is a Takarazuka Revue production, when the source material is NOT anime/manga based (in fact, it's based on an English play) an acceptable source for Masquerade costumes? The play was performed in Japan and we're making costumes based on the Japanese version.

Thanks!

Given that Takarazuka costumes have been entered in previous masquerades (as recently as last year, as I believe, at very least, the Oscar in the Rose of Versailles/Le Chevalier D'Eon skit was Takarazuka-based), I would be surprised to hear that they wouldn't be allowed because the source that the performance was based on was non Japanese.  In fact, I think a good chunk of their material is non-Japanese inspired...though that is based on my last look at one of a dozen performance lists.  I am still geeking out at the fact that they did Zorro...ZORRO, my childhood hero thanks to the old Saturday morning cartoon (and I am so gonna end up making a TakaraZorro...just a matter of when I have time to bling all the things).

You're probably right Dany. I'm pretty sure we're in the clear, but I am hoping for confirmation because my friend and I have alternate costumes we could wear in case our Takarazuka outfits are not okay. We just want to know which ones to concentrate on more :).

Oh that is YOU! :D  Heh, I didn't realize, my bad! I think we keep running across one another and not realizing who the other one is because the costumes are so different (I was the Witch Hunter Robin fangirling on you, and then I got a good look at your face and was all "That was D'Eon from last year, I think!")

By the way, not sure anyone noticed, but it does appear that the rules have been posted!

http://www.fanime.com/events/masquerade/

By the way, one question I already have is where we might be allowed to put things after we are done onstage. The teardown part is not a big deal, but the rules say "out of the theater", which to me reads "offsite/out of the building)". Do we need to keep them in our sitting area, or in the general place where cosplayers sit during the show? Another options?

You need to get them *out*. I mean seriously out. We have had huge huge problems with us running over schedule because people have taken too much time to get their stuff out of the theater. If you can store it in the audience with you (because it's small enough) that's perfectly OK, but if it's some gigantic monstrosity (those people know who they are >.>) you need to have it out of the theater.

I can't suggest enough: beg, bribe, whatever you need to do to get 1-2 friends to help carry your stuff out for you. Ideally people who aren't cosplayers, but would be happy to get passes so they don't have to wait in line and get fantastic seats to see the show, and even backstage access. All they have to do is help you carry your huge backdrops/props/whatever out of the theater before judging ends. That's it.

Thanks for understanding :)

Marisa

Is it a new rule that non-Asian oriented video game costumes aren't allowed? I was considering trying my luck this year, but I realized that Dragon Age probably won't qualify (I'm doing Flemeth, with fully studded armor and everything :(). That's kind of a bummer.

Some more prop questions/stuff..I wanted to address them out here so that all can see them, since I'm not addressing specifics on our entry...

-Exactly what size of prop would be allowed to stay in the audience, versus what would need to be removed from the building? For example, a prop can only be X by Y by Z, or it must be able to break down enough to sit on your lap, etc. I think this would give people a much clearer idea of how to plan their set pieces and whether they would actually need to return anything or if it can stay with them.

-The Masquerade happens at a prime time for elevator use. So if we have a prop that needs to leave the building, that will be a big challenge. I'm assuming the reason you're suggesting non-cosplay helpers because of this issue? Will people who need to leave the building be able to be expedited back into the building when they return? Also, if helpers would still like to see the show, or the majority of it, could they stay until the last one or two entries, assuming they do not delay with leaving with the props?

No this has always been a rule, and we're going to tamp down on it a lot more this year. We definitely had some stuff sneak in last year, and some of the contestants were really pissed and I heard about it alllll freaking year long Q____Q

So, yeah, sorry :(   Those costumes are best for things like Wondercon or ComicCon or gaming-oriented conventions.

Sorry :(

If it can't sit with you in the audience comfortable and not impeding other members of the audience, it needs to be removed.

Yes

Yes, absolutely. They will have an official sticker. That means they get all the special access of a costumed contestant. They get "backstage access" and will be able to get right in through rovers and door staff.

They could hypothetically tear it down and take it back to the room right after your skit, then come back and watch the rest of the show. As long as they have the sticker, they are fine. You just need to make sure you swing them by Masquerade Registration and get them all checked in on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (morning on on Sunday).

Thanks!

My hopes are high this year, but the past two years have not been in our favor.
Last year, I stayed up until five with a small handful of others while the rest couldn't stay up passed 2, thus the 2a.m.-ers group.  The year before that, I believe sign ups opened around three... I'm pretty sure.

Anyone who registered within the proper timeframe who e-mails me ([email protected]) shouldn't have a problem even if you don't get the confirmation e-mail.

Just shoot me an e-mail and I'll manually approve you.

It shows too! Do the registrations hold after the event is over? I was kind of stumbling about with the initial setup part. Of course, if this is a whole new system, I wouldn't expect that my stuff from 2010 would still be there! XD

Nope, I clear it out every year, just because I don't like to hold on to people's personal information. I usually only hold on to paperwork for a couple of years too (like judging stuff, and minor waiver forms) then we take them down to a document shredder.

Thank you for all of your hard work, Marisa!! I appreciate all of this effort, and the masquerade is always smoothly run and so much fun!
Our group is all signed up and ready to go.... time for rehearsals! Cannot wait!

Oh, I did have a question, though. My group was thinking of using a few chairs in our skit. If I remember correctly, there are some available that we could use, right? If so, if we made a generic chair cover (just so that the chairs weren't distracting), would they be able to be used on said chairs? Would stage ninjas be able to set the chairs up with them on?
Sorry for the complex question~

Thanks again!

This shouldn't be a problem! Please put it in your "special needs" section in the database though, because I'll never remember unless you put it there >.<

Hey, I have a question about light cues... we need the lights to go down (and stay down) at a specific part, about 4-5 seconds before the audio ends.  This is very important, would that be a problem? Or can the crew do that?

Speaking from experience, the answer is yes and no. The lighting is done by union workers from the theater and are not Fanime staff. Er go, their level of concern for the show being perfect is only so much. You certainly can give them lighting cues (we needed the lights dropped down as low as possible as well), but they don't do lighting cues during the rehearsal, so you won't know if it's going to work until it actually happens during the show. We had the time and a very obvious audio cue to drop our lights that we gave to the staff but during the acutal show, something happened and we had a black out for about two seconds till it changed to an entire red wash that still made us completely visible.

So my suggestion is that go ahead and try for it, but DEFINITELY have a back-up plan in mind if it doesn't work.

How much of the costume is dependent on the makeup? If you're doing something like a N'avi (using for the sake of example of high amounts of makeup and something where makeup is highly important, not as an example of a to-theme entry :) )or something very makeup intensive, you -may- want to see if you can get an exception and go for Sunday craftmanship. It's one thing to put on a sewn costume twice (that looks like it will be our plan, and we're just gonna throw a photoshoot in because we won't have time on Sunday or Monday to do it) but putting on a lot of makeup, taking it off, and then putting it on again could be a bit trying, especially since the makeup may not go on the same the second time as it does the first.

Three questions.

I've went over the rules to which I'm uncertain of.

1. My skit is going to be based on Dead Space 2: severed which is a videogame which was also made into an animated motion picture. So the question here is that is Dead Space OK for this masquerade?

2. My prop isn't very significant. All I need is a fold up table and a cloth. Do I have to provide this for myself or will masquerade provide it?

3. I'm well aware of the rating to which all dialogue is supposed to be PG-13 rating. But is the word 'damn it' or 'god damn it' OK?

All entries have to be Asian in origins, so unless I missed something in my research, Dead Space doesn't meet that qualification.

Quote2. My prop isn't very significant. All I need is a fold up table and a cloth. Do I have to provide this for myself or will masquerade provide it?

Probably would need to be you. Chairs are available, as Marisa mentioned that, but fabric and tables, not so much, and you would have to have it small enough to keep with you so you are not subject to needing to remove it.

Quote3. I'm well aware of the rating to which all dialogue is supposed to be PG-13 rating. But is the word 'damn it' or 'god damn it' OK?

Personally not sure here, but I think I have heard "dammit" once. In the interest of conserving on drama, I would avoid the G word as a precaution and just use "dammit" if allowed. Just my opinion though..

Well I can somewhat debate this, but that would take a while. Aside from that what about the earlier masquerades which featured resident evil 4 and silent hill?

And aside from this, out of curiosity who gets the final say if it's in or not?

To which then aside from this, if it's out from both the skit and walk through then I can't participate in the cosplay contest can I?

Easily fixable, not a big deal to me.

If you check Google, you will find that both Resident Evil and Silent Hill are produced in Asia. Resident Evil was produced by Capcom, Silent Hill was produced by Konami...and both companies are out of Japan. That is why you've seen them in the Masquerade in the past.  Looking up DeadSpace, it's produced by Electronic Arts, which is based here in the US. The closest to Asia that you get for anything Dead Space related is Ben Templesmith's art contribution to the comics, but only because Templesmith is from Australia (which is waaay south).

Marisa (the masquerade coordinator and the last word on entries) has stated that there was some "slipping" last year, but she intends to enforce that rule quite firmly this year.

QuoteAnd aside from this, out of curiosity who gets the final say if it's in or not?

As mentioned, that would be Marisa. She can be contacted at [email protected].  While she does come to the boards from time to time, she is pretty busy outside of the boards, so email is best for things that need fast response.

QuoteTo which then aside from this, if it's out from both the skit and walk through then I can't participate in the cosplay contest can I?

You -can-, you would just need to change to a different entry that adheres to the rules.  But if you don't have time to put together something new before then, I suppose that it does hurt your chances.

See above for name and email. As mentioned, that may be a faster answer directly from the source if you're in the middle of recording audio at the moment. The sooner you contact her, the sooner you can square away your answers.

We can provide a table but it's just the same one we use to stick the prizes on. If you need something specific, we suggest you bring your own.

Um, if we are talking something like "Dammit, Janet!" from Rocky Horror? That's probably ok. "God Damn It" is getting into the sketchy realm of "why do we offend today?" so... that would be a no.

Thank you for posting this, Dany. This is pretty much verbatium what I've replied to people <3 I've been really busy, and I appreciate you answering this for me. This is exactly right.

If we let in DeadSpace we would have to let in World of Warcraft, Rift, Halo, Starcraft, etc. I'd had a few boo-boos in the past couple of years because *I* was ignorant to the origins of stuff (particularly Portal and Assassin's Creed) because I am a MMO gamer and not a console gamer so I had no idea.

This year I literally looked up every single series; I double checked and cross-referenced.

A *really* easy way to look this stuff up is Wikipedia.

So, for example, I like World of Warcraft and Aion.

I can look them up.

World of Wacraft is produced by Blizzard, an American Company, located in Irvine, CA.

Aion is produced by NCSoft, a major Korean Developer.

Aion is OK, World of Warcraft is not.

QuoteAnd aside from this, out of curiosity who gets the final say if it's in or not?

Me.... and I did reply by e-mail to the Dead Space question, and to a couple of other questions. You can still participate, and keep your place in line, as long as you change what your cosplay is going to be.

112' x 35'

Usually part of the stage at least though is taken up by speakers and/or lights, so it's a bit narrower than that in reality.

The Proscenium Opening (aka the area where people can see you when the curtains are open) is 49'9" x 30'.

Thanks!

Should not be a problem. Please make sure it's listed in the "special needs" section of the database, and that you show up at rehearsal so the stage staff can make sure everything is the way you need it to be.

You can go ahead and change all of them. This won't be a big deal until I "fix" the entries (and assign slots), which isn't going to happen for another week or so.

On a side note, I unfortunately had to leave the Masquerade right after my performance, but I heard afterwards that I won an award that I didn't get to pick up. Could I ask real quick if anyone knows which award this is? I was the Princess Tutu who did the Dying Swan routine, I found a video of me here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiyZV25NBdg
