Title: Official 2011 Fanimaid Cafe thread
Post by: PyronIkari on December 22, 2010, 09:48:32 PM
Hi kids, this is Mikey, co-head of this years Fanimaid Cafe.

Tryouts for this years cafe will take place roughly in February leaving 3 months or so before con for you to purchase your maid uniform (please do not do so until AFTER you've been accepted and AFTER the maid uniform is okay'd by staff). Any questions or inqueries can be made here.

Ideas and suggestions although are appreciated but please put consideration into anything you suggest. We've heard "WE WANT A BUTLER CAFE" 30924028402935 million times.

General rules for cafe applicants.

Some basic requirements are:
1) Must be Female (No exceptions!)
2) Must be 16 or older by the event
3) Must be able to supply your own uniform
4) Must be able to attend to at least 2 meetings (with your own means of transportation)

Meetings will be either in San Jose or the San Francisco area, these have yet to be determined. That's all I can think of right now.

Happy New Year, everyone! I'm Jun, head of Fanimaid Cafe.

It's about that time of year again, and we are recruiting maids for Fanimaid Cafe 2011. If you are interested in joining, please email [email protected]. This will add you to the Fanimaid Cafe mailing list for information on what to expect, dates for try outs, meetings, and a short FAQ. Do not worry if you do not get a response right away. As long as you have emailed [email protected], you have been added to the mailing list.

If you have any specific questions that need special attention that are not answered in the mass-emails, we will try to work with you as soon as possible.

Being a maid at Fanimaid Cafe jobs is a volunteer job, and you will receive volunteer hours with the time you spend with us (including training and meetings) towards reimbursing your badge fees.

You must fit the requirements listed above to join Fanimaid Cafe. Please do not purchase your maid uniform until after you have passed the try-out stage, and have had your uniform approved by a staff member. Purchasing your maid uniform is of your responsibility. (Sorry!)

Try-out dates will be posted very soon. Please expect an update, shortly. If you are a Fanimaid volunteer that would like to insure receiving information right away as they become updated, email [email protected] to add yourself to the mailing list.

Also, if you are a veteran maid, you may receive an invitation back to working with us at Fanimaid Cafe to bypass training stages. If you are invited back and plan on purchasing a new uniform, you must send a product photo or design sketch to staff to have it approved as per usual. If you do NOT receive an invitation back, you must try-out again to join Fanimaid Cafe.

Fanimaid☆LIVE performances will be worked on shortly. If you are considering performing this year, I suggest to begin planning or thinking about what you would like to perform even if you have not tried out yet. Performance line-ups are first come first serve, and filtered by staff members who deem it appropriate.

Thank you! Please expect updates soon.

Tryouts Round 2: FIGHT!

But quick question though, how many meetings/tryouts will there be? I noticed a requirement is to at least attend two meetings.

Tryouts are different than "meetings". Tryouts=where you go to try out to be a maid. Meeting=Follow up where we talk about the specifics in what we're asking you to do, train a little, get to know each other and talk about suggestions and all that good jazz.

The exact number of meetings/tryouts have not been established, but probably around 2 tryouts and 3 meetings.

Just wanted to put in some random words of encouragement:

Come to the try-outs!  <3  I know I was all nervous about trying out, but it's definitely worth it.  Just be out-going and willing to work with people.  The people you'll be volunteering with are all super nice and worthy friends.  I know my Fanime experience last year had more fun memories than when I just went to the con as a normal attendee.  If I ever had a moment of confusion on what to do during the Maid Cafe hours, a veteran maid or staff member swooped down and helped me.

Hope to see you all at meetings.  <3

-Enju/Patricia

Also, just a question: Are we going to have in-cafe mini-performances or group games like rock paper scissors?  I think in previous years you guys were able to have this done?  :D  I'd love to help out with those if needed, as I normally shy away from the stage performances.

Sending out some words of encouragement as well~

Please, if you do meet the requirements and are interested in attending, don't be afraid to try out! Like Enju said, we love people who are out-going and cooperative. I've been a part of this the last two years and it's always fun to meet maids because we end up all becoming great friends. If you like meeting new people and even love to participate in events like our previous Maid Cafe performances, then that's all the more awesome.

The best advice that I can give you to those who wish to try out this year is to just be yourself. Hope to see a lot of you at the try-outs!

Greetings!

I apologize for the delay, and if people have been wondering about updates! Now that we have a sufficient amount of volunteers expressing interest, it is time to announce our try-out dates!

Our current try-out dates are February 13, 2011 and March 12, 2011. The meeting will begin at 11:00am and end at approximately 3:00pm, and take place in the San Jose Convention Center, right outside the Santa Clara room in the Hilton.

EDIT: Also please attend only ONE try-out. Attending more than once is prohibited.

It is not too late to sign up for our mailing list, so feel free to email [email protected] if you or any of your friends are interested in becoming a maid and would like to receive information as we go. For those who are interested in joining, but have a valid reason as to why they cannot attend a try-out (like not living in California), email us as we will try to work out a compromise for you around the time try-outs are happening.

What To Expect
You will receive a basic outline of duties and details regarding your job as a Fanimaid, including playing the role as a maid properly, learning phrases, mannerisms, how to wait tables, and etc. Performance details are briefly outlined during the meeting as well. We will also discuss the ideal uniform you must purchase to be a part of Fanimaid Cafe. There will be a quick interview at the end for staff to better get to know you. No work experience or proficiency in Japanese is necessary.

There will be a handful of information, so bring a notebook and pen if possible!

**Please do not purchase a maid uniform until you have passed a try-out and your uniform has been approved by a staff member. This also applies if you are a veteran maid and are planning on purchasing a new uniform.

Once you have passed a try-out, you will receive more detailed information and study materials to train you and teach you to become familiar with your job, plans for events and performances, and sometimes invitations to meet-ups to get to know your fellow Fanimaid Cafe maids. ^^

Please let us know if you have any questions, and we will to the best of our ability answer them as soon as possible. Keep checking back on this thread for updates!

Hello girls!

Just a reminder that try outs will be this Sunday on the 13th. We will be meeting in the Hilton of the San Jose Convention Center (Where FanimeCon takes place) and the try-outs will be right outside the Santa Clara room. We will begin at 11AM and end at 3PM.

Please do NOT be late! It is necessary to be there the entire duration, as much of basic information is being taught at the beginning of the try-outs themselves. It is advised to bring a notepad and a pen.

For more information regarding the cafe, feel free to refer to this thread for general information and archives of previous updates. I advise to have read all major updates before trying out. And feel free to ask any legitimate questions that have not already been answered, and we will do the best of our ability to answer you~

Good luck, everyone! I hope to see you there! ♥

MMm... for the most part it's an introduction, an overview of how the cafe works and what we expect of people, then like a quick 1 on 1 with one of the staff members to get a feel of your personality and just to measure how much you know. You get your picture taken and asked some questions and stuff.

I heard that Maid Cafe is not part of staff...meaning that you have to buy your badge in advance...is this true? Also, how much commitment is there for a maid? Is there an hourly quota by the end of the con, like staff needs to have completed 24 hrs by the end of the con?
Do we just show up to the try-out session, or were we supposed to practice before hand (if there were practice sessions beforehand)?
I'm pretty sure I'm in the proper age, but is there an age limit? What can we expect at Maid Cafe, and what do you you expect from a maid working at Maid Cafe? Suggestions on where to get maid outfits? What happens if there is a dispute with an uncooperative customer?

Sorry, I'm flooding everyone with questions...^^; I'm pretty sure if I went to a try-out I'll probably get my questions answered haha. If anyone can answer my questions before hand, then I will be oh-so-grateful to you!! <3

Most of these were already answered if you read the posts in this thread but just because...

There is a quota. Shifts are made and you have to work a certain about of time. As of right now we're aiming for 4 hours for the con with the times spans of when the cafe hours are open. Practice if you want. I don't know how you would seeing that you probably don't know what's expected of you, which is probably for the better for us to judge. What can you expect as a maid? Lots of people talking to you, simple service, and conversationing/communicating/serving patrons. You're a maid. You serve customers. Maid outfits will be discussed AFTER you are accepted and there will be conversations and discussion about this if/when/after you get accepted. If there's problems, then staff/rovers and others will be there to handle it.

Please read the other posts in this thread.

Title: Badges?
Post by: sakura.summers on February 13, 2011, 10:45:42 PM
I've heard people say this is volunteer work, but if you sign up to be staff at the FanimeCon website Maid Cafe is one of your options. So, I was wondering, do you have to buy your own badge? and do you get a Staff Badge? Also, if it is volunteering, can you be Fanime Staff (say, for karaoke or something) and be a maid at the Maid Cafe? If so, how would payment for the Maid Cafe work?

Maid Cafe also has an official staff, but general maids are not part of this staff. Staff for maid cafe are the members that do like the logistics, budgeting, coordination, scheduling, etc. etc. etc. Maids themselves are volunteers. Currently Maid Cafe is not looking for staff.

You would have to pay for your own badge, but you do get volunteer hours towards getting your badge reimbursed.(not maid cafe doesn't give enough volunteer hours to qualify completely for volunteer badge). Yes you can still be a maid at the cafe and staff some where else. This however is up to your staff to allow you time to work at the cafe during open hours, attend meetings, etc. etc. and still do your staffing job.

Payment for the cafe? What do you mean by payment? It's volunteer work.

How many hours you get to go towards reimbursing your badge depends on how many hours you volunteer to work at the maid cafe, or any volunteer service at any department in general.

I'm not fully understanding what you mean. I assume what you mean is how many hours do you get towards your reimbursement? Everything you say sounds like you're equating it to money not hours.

If you are staff and have a staff badge, you don't need volunteer hours to get reimbursed for your badge. You already have a staff badge, why would you need reimbursement? If you're looking to volunteer to get something out of it, I suggest you don't. Staffing for the maid cafe isn't exactly an easy job. it requires a lot of dedication and work. It also takes quite a bit of commitment and will to be doing what you're doing.

It's incredibly fun and a lot comes out of it, but you're still doing work.

So if you are chosen to be a maid, you still have to buy your entrance badge beforehand. Am I correct?

What happens if a maid has an emergency and suddenly needs to drop out? Penalties to the maid or the staff will somehow figure it out?

Does Maid Cafe ever get under/overstaffed? I don't even know if this is important to me. It's more concerning to the staff :-/

The fanimaid cafe does not have enough hours to qualify for reimbursement. You would have to do additional hours elsewhere to reach the volunteer requirement to get reimbursed.

Yes, you would have to buy your badge on your own.

If you have to drop out, you have to drop out. We're not so mean as to penalize you for dropping out, but in all cases, please let us know? I hope she doesn't mind telling this story but one of our maids came 4 1/2 hours late to the convention because her graduation was on the same day. It took longer than was scheduled and there was bad traffic on the way there. To be honest though she was heart broken that she let us down and showed up late (this is the kind of relationship a lot of us have in this group. We've become really close friends for the most part) and felt that she had let us down. Silly girl, it was one of the biggest days of her life, and she was sorry for letting us down? Please, your life is more important than this volunteer job. However dedication, hard work, and effort are all requested and required of you. We're not monsters and we understand circumstances.

Overstaffed is better than understaffed. There's really no such thing as overstaffed for the cafe. Understaffed is difficult. It just means a lot more work for the people that are there. This shouldn't be a problem, and really hasn't been a problem, but i'm speaking generally.

It's not about how many maids... it's about the hours the cafe is open. Although I know you're inquiring out of curiosity but please try to not flood this thread. I've answered all your questions already in posts and you're still asking the same questions even though I just answered them in the post before. This is the official thread, so I'd rather it not filled with posts that are already answered.

Hi, regarding the volunteer hours, hopefully I can offer a simple explanation that will answer your questions thusfar.

You do need to purchase your own badge. It is one of the requirements that you are able to provide your own registration. When you pick up your badge, you sign up to be a volunteer at the con itself to receive a volunteer badge.

You need a general total of 20 hours to fully reimburse a weekend-badge, and 5 hours for a day badge. There are no partial reimbursements. You can fulfill this depending on how many hours you offer to the cafe, this includes in and out of the convention.

However, as the maid cafe is only open from 11AM-6PM for two days, and shifts are typically 2-4 hours (depending on how you are scheduled) you generally do not get enough hours for a reimbursement. What other volunteers do is sign up for another department seeking volunteers to fulfill the total hour requirements. Most maids that I've recruited in the past generally don't bother becoming volunteers, however.

A maid can receive up to approximately 8-17 hours. 4 hours for try-outs (this only applies if you pass), 2 hours for the at-con meeting, 2 hours for 2-hr shifts, 4 hours for 4-hr shifts, 1 hour for each performance, and etc. It adds up, but sometimes maids stick around and contribute more than we ask for.

To most, it isn't really so much about "what we are getting back", but from my experience, most girls come for the experience of being a maid and being a part of Fanimaid Cafe. I don't mean to say that we're just people looking for free labor, because that isn't it at all. We do this because it's fun, provides joy and a sense of accomplishment for staff, our maid volunteers, and our customers. We all just simply work hard every year, and ultimately, have lots and lots of fun.

We do discuss volunteer hours at try-outs, and feel free to ask us any questions. Be sure to read back into past updates and information posted to make sure your question wasn't already answered.

Hope that helps!

- Jun

Just a small reminder that the last try out meeting is in a week and a half! March 12th at the Santa Clara room near the Hilton at the SJCC. Some small liner notes:

If you attended the first try out you do not need to try out at the second one. Actually, please don't try out again, because it's confusing when we get two try outs by the same person and I have to figure out why there's too matching names and try to differentiate between the two only to realize it's the same person(PS it's annoying and I might just accidentally delete you, no just kidding, but seriously, it's annoying so don't). You can show up again and stuff but don't officially try out.

If you have not tried out yet and would like to, this is your last chance to unless you have an insanely good reason, are super cute, and perfect for the maid position. The reason being is that time is incredibly important and we need to make sure of a lot of things that you won't need to worry about, but cause us plenty of stress.

Also, don't worry if you haven't gotten anything from the mailing list, as there hasn't been anything to update as of recent. One will probably be going out soon about the upcoming meeting and reitterating everything I've said here with a little more detail.

Good luck, and hope to see you at Fanime.

So, I was just reading old threads to get myself up to speed and every time I see a butler cafe mentioned I LOL. Just wanted to state for the record that they do have butler cafes in Japan but, not like you think. They do cater to female patrons but the "butlers" are actually women in drag, sorry ! More of a yaoi thing....

The last meeting ended around 3pm by the last interview and we even started a bit late, so it really should not take longer than 3,4 hours at the very most. We appreciate all of your patience and hope to see you tomorrow morning @ 11am. :)

You have to be 16 BY the start of fanime no exceptions. It's legal reasonings and the such. Sorry if you don't qualify, try against next year.

Ok, so some of the butler cafes do have male butlers, I admit, my bad. Please forgive me master...The one I read about only employed foreign males and has a fairy tale fantasy theme. The butlers pull out your chairs, open the doors and you can practice your English. Best part you get to wear a tiara. :)

But anyway, no more butler talk, I promise.

I thought the try outs went well, even though there wasn't a huge turn out. I estimate we each have about a 2 in 3 chance. I know never tell you the odds.

Word is they will get back to us in about 2 weeks. That should be just enough time to order our dresses. start saving !

Good night my lovely maids, we all need our beauty sleep.

As the turn out was rather small this past meeting, we will be holding a last-minute try-out on April 10, 2011!!! Please inform anyone that is interested in joining Fanimaid Cafe.

Hope to see you guys there!

Nope, this just means that we'll pick out this batch right now. Then
if there's any at the emergency last minute meeting we like we'll add
them to.

So, for the March 12th meeting I came when the regular staff meeting started, which was around 3PM because I was uninformed about the actual try out times, and I guess I got last minute interviewed.
Is there any chance that I could try out for real for the April try out?

I'd like to try out, but I have a trip to Japan scheduled on the date of the next try-out...
I was wondering if you can do one-on-one try-outs or whether you were planning another one?
I speak fluent Japanese and know the basics of being a maid cafe maid, so I'll be sure not to disappoint!

Please be patient. With the events of Japan's earthquake and the such, we've had a lot of work we've been doing concerning other things which have been taking up our time. Witht he event in sunnyvale this weekend along with a lot of personal issus concerning what heppened, we've really had little time to get everything done. The process is moving along and we are slowly finishing selection for the first two meetings, it will take a little bit more time.

Thank you for your patience and we'll get the mails out as soon as we can.

Hi girls who tried out.

So after 5 hours of discussion tonight, going through pictures and interviews, we've decided on who we're accepting in from the first two meetings. We'll be sending out an email relatively soon (tomorrow night maybe the thursday night if I get too busy). Good luck have fun No Rush 15 minutes.

A quick note. Yes, some were sent out. After the meeting this weekend we will completely finalize are choices as many of the maids were put into a maybe category. After this last meeting we will make our final decisions.

HOWEVER...

There were some complications concerning some of the emails. Specifically, 2 email addresses given to us bounced back as errored non-existing emails. I will try to work this out and will probably take some time to do to figure out who gave me errored emails and how to contact them appropriately.

I will be sending out a mass email to all of the tryouts/current maids later today as a reminder of the last meeting for those who have not attended one yet but still wish to try out.

IF YOU GAVE US YOUR EMAIL AND HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY EMAILS FROM US AT ALL AFTER TONIGHT, PLEASE EMAIL ME AT

Hi. For all you girls that wanted to try out but haven't yet. Remember
to try out this Sunday Hilton side of the SJCC(where Fanime is held).

Tryouts will start at 11 but try to get there a little early because
the group may move.

This will be your last chance to try out.

Thanks!

Greetings everyone!

Fanimaid Cafe has their final headcount of maids prepared for 2011, and we are officially clearing the mailing list for this year! Maids who have passed this year will receive a final confirmation email almost immediately after this announcement.

Meaning, for those who did not arrive at a try-out date or has not made it to the final headcount will not be receiving any emails from Fanimaid Cafe after this. This includes veteran maids who have not responded to their invitation back into Fanimaid Cafe. If you are a veteran maid that has participated in the previous years and received invitations back, and are still interested in participating in 2011, please email us to let us know. For those who did not make it, we apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope to see you at FanimeCon!

Thanks to everyone for their support thusfar, and congratulations to our new maids of Fanimaid Cafe 2011!

- Jun, Head of Fanimaid

Not that this will mean anything, but I'm incredibly curious for anyone that would like to reply.

Fanimaid live and Zoku Fanimaid live has a bunch of our girls performing on stage zero for you all. What do you guys enjoy the best of these performances(not talking about specific people or something like "GIRLS IN MAID UNIFORMS!").

Do you prefer group songs, solo songs, dance stuff? And what kind of music? Do you like when they do old anime songs, current pop music? Themed medley, internet famous meme songs? Doujin music?

I just want to get a feel of what you guys like, it doesn't really influence too much because I don't choose what girls want to perform or anything. But it may affect how I end up scheduling and working things in and how the show progresses. So feel free to leave an opinion and feed back, it's appreciated.

I'd like to see a good mix of old anime new anime themes where both old school anime fans and newer anime fans would enjoy. Dance, solo and group songs are all pretty important imo of making the maid performances on Stage Zero diverse and fun to watch. As far as meme songs, I personally have had enough of them.

Would be interesting where fans could request a song out of a list on spot but I'm not sure how well that would work out or if it would be even practical at all..

This is a side thing and I'm not too sure if this is where I can bring it up but I remember back when Reuben Langdon played some SFIV I think back in 09? Was wondering if maybe there could be a part where the fans could challenge maid(s) to some game on Stage Zero?

I thought overall last year the Stage Zero performances was pretty good and having Momoi there was another big plus so hopefully she'll make her appearance again.

This has been thought of quite a bit. But the issue with this is how much could we do with the time we have. With the Quiz Maid Academy game, there's a chance for people to play a game *with* the maids and win prizes and stuff. To actually play things against the maids, we have the cafe itself where you can play fun little games with them and the such. Although I would like to put up a big event like playing an actual video game against the maids and such, time restraints and capabilities run a little short. To setup the system would be like... 5 or so min and clean up with be 5 or so min. So unless I wipe out part of the concert(which I'm not doing) we'd only have like... 15 minutes at most to do this. Then picking contestants and everything, at most we'd get in like 3 or 4 matches.

One of the big reasons I would like to do this, is outside of people that are actually good and know the game well, I could teach the maids to beat people and I'd love to see that happen, hahahah.

Enju for example could probably beat your random BlazBlu player pretty easy. With 30 min of prep training Jun would be able to beat your random SF player.

But outside of all that. I do have something setup for a little interaction this year for Fanimaid Live. So I hope audience members will participate in itand not be buzz kills by just standing there when it happens.

I'm not too familiar with the times Stage Zero will be available for use but is it possible where the whole gaming part of the maid cafe be separate from the dances, singing and etc like two sessions on different days? I would assume it would ease the stress of the change in setup from the whole dancing and what-not to gaming. Maybe offer some prizes for beating the maid in a challenge like you mentioned with the Maid Quiz Academy? Not this year but maybe a possibility idea for the future Maid Cafe Stage Zero events. I mean I genuinely would love to see it expand to that point and I think doing that shows how strong you, Jun, Mizuki, maids and etc. are willing to take this big event showcase to bigger and bigger levels. Think about it and I'll be frank here when I say this: I think the maid cafe performance on Stage Zero last year was probably the most popular Stage Zero event ( unless I missed something..).

On the side note of the games aside from Street Fighter and other fighters maybe like Puzzle Fighter or something xD. But then again it goes back to your point on the whole time constraint and stuff unless you got some maids with killer PF skills >_>;

i'd have to say...once again i was dissapointed by the food offering at the maid cafe.  I know it's union, I know it's stuck with their rules, but can't you guys negotiate something better? I do give you guys props for negotiating substantial items under $5. Many people don't realize this, but the venue determines what and how much the food is.

We gets what we can, sorry man. Realistically though, if we're talking only in the con center, the prices aren't that bad and the food isn't that bad. The deserts are actually quite good, but the sandwiches and everything are just normal sandwiches.

I had a lot of conversations with one of the cooks and he actually talked to me about how he doesn't like making food like this, because it's not "good food". It's just simple catering food and to him that's not "cooking". I complimented the deserts and said that a lot of patrons love the new chocolate mousse cake(which was pretty good). He said and I quote "This isn't cooking. I wish this was a real restaurant that I could cook for all your patrons, because then I'd show you cooking".

This was my first year attending the Fanimaid Cafe, and while the food item was expensive, it was pretty good.  Some Key-Lime thing... I can't remember what it was called.

But I enjoyed the experience.  Our maid was delightful (sadly, I forget her name), and she chatted with us and played Connect 4 for a good 20 minutes or so, and we got a group picture.  Didn't rush us at all, as some people have been saying.  It was fun and a nice peaceful break from the chaos.
