Title: So, Ladies and Gentlemen, may we talk Politics then?
Post by: questionette on September 15, 2008, 04:47:32 PM
I figured that the matter of choosing out next president is a weighty enough matter, so here it goes:

What's your opinion on what's going on out there in the political world? Who do you think should be president? Barrack (Saddam) Hussein Obama, or John (I don't think he'll live through his term) McCain? Do you think Hillary should have been on the ballot in place of Obama? I mean, she might be going through menopause (which means we'd be screwed anyway) or she might even be past that, in which case she might as well be a man.  Does Palin being on McCain's ticket make you want to vote for him because she's a woman?

Are you a Republican or a Democrat? Or a...something else that doesn't matter....KIDDING, yet not.  Will you be voting R or D? Why?

Have you been keeping up with the news? Give your insight....

Oh and by the way, random fact, that "MILF" Palin is pro shooting wolves out of helicopters to control the population =]

Have at it!

I only recently registered to vote and of course i'm labeled "independant" I really don't like politics because of how fake the candidated represent themselves and how little they actually care about important matters like the problems right here in america. Honestly i don't like Hilary either. i want someone in office who isn't power hungry, knows his stuff, will hold themself together when the mud starts to fly, and will give a damn about our own problems as a country!

so... yeah It's a dream that probably won't happen

For some reason I want to beat you up~

Anyway, Im on the liberal democratic side I think that Having Obama in office will be something refreshing, someone who isnt in the mainstream light and I like his ideals with the economy and education. That hes actually going to give a crap with the strenghtening of public schools especially the ones that have been struggling to meet goverment standards. That he cares about the environment and is willing to make this earth a greener one
Along with immigration, he wants to keep immigrant families together and is going to work comprimises and fix our broken system.

as long as we keep books in the library, the bible out of school and laws off my body then were okay

Beat who up? D:

Oh and just a little update, McCain had a surge in the electoral vote recently.  Obama still has a SLIGHT edge but...it's looking grim.  I swear to god if McCain is elected I'm moving elsewhere in the world, buncha rednecks D:<

OTHER RANDOM INFO:

The price of a barrel of gas has dropped to 96$!!
= GAS PRICES GOING DOWN

...and the stock market also went down, 500 points
very, VERY BAD.

Whoever is elected president had better have a plan to clean up the economy, and it'd better work.

A market where you can buy stocks. :0

In all seriousness, I totally forgot about Hilary. It seems like the attention atm is all on Obama and McCain. But I live in a bubble. I agree though, I'm not so inclined to like a 60-something year old guy who is more prone to Alzheimers and stroke than a young(er) guy.

Quotewhat's a stock market?

Where you should invest your money and watch it grow,
Especially now since the prices are low!

Oh snap I rhymed.

Edit:

FUN FACT~
In 1968, 20% of the vote went to a man named George Wallace, whose slogan was "Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!" and "Vote right, vote white"

I hope to god racism isn't affecting this presidential race, but we all know there's that redneck somewhere voting for the old white guy for that reason.

Either way, if McCain or Obama becomes president, our economy will still be in the dumps, it's a fact. There's almost nothing that can help improve our economy, especially after all the spending we've done for the past years. We're going to run into a huge economic crisis. The "war" we're fighting isn't going to end just like how old wars ended, hell this isn't even a war that's going on, it's just us invading countries in the name of "peace" or whatever, if it was a real war, then if we "won" (there is no such thing as winning a war imo) we could have a chance of redeeming our economy, as it's pretty much fact, whenever a country wins a war their economy grows immensely.

Also, the stock market is crap, I know someone who works there and pretty much is afraid of the future.

Ethnicity will always control the vote.

*Our* votes don't mean jack squat, we learned it in high school guys, it's all electoral college, our votes are just there make it feel like we really count, when in all if no one goes to the polls on voting day it wouldn't make a single difference.

Also a handful of these posts in this topic makes me almost, well, scared.

p.s. China is in debt too, and mad at us, wonder why?

And some kid lumping in the Republican party with 'rednecks', claiming, as we've heard so many times before that they'll leave the country if the 'rednecks' are in office, because obviously they're nothing but a bunch of wolf-shooting yokels.

We've only invaded one country in the name of 'peace' and 'democracy'.  The rationale of Iraq is easily debateable, but Afghanistan has a much stronger case of national interest.

As for the value of voting, there are numerous times where senators and governers have been elected by just a few hundred votes.  Sometimes even less.  And how do you intend to reform the election system without electing senators and congressmen to push reform?

So where is Bin Laden?

And don't forget the ballot initiatives.(most of which I vote against)  There are 12 state measures this election.

Economy sucks because of our shit head president George W. Bush, starting this shit in the middle east and calling it a "war" bullshit he does not know what makes a war a war! He is a disgrace to war mongrels! If he is going to start a war then at least start a war with a country worth wasting money on. Now because of him we'll be screwed when North Korea attacks and don't say it won't happen because it will! Palin is a damn idiot for saying the Iraq War is a mission from God, bullshit! I don't think God wants us to fight over oil people, the last thing he wants is fighting! You don't have to be religious to know this.

Of course! Because people think that if Obama becomes president, he'll turn the country into a gigantic gangsta land. Honestly, Obama wouldn't do that and even if he wanted to it wouldn't be possible since we have the congress.

All this crap started because of two things: Hate and Greed, two natures that makes mankind the it is.

Today's terrorists are cowards

Oh one more thing, how is it that the middle east can fight us so well? We have the best technology in the world, yet we can't defeat a third world country.

Our government sucks, they don't even trust the citizens of their own country.

Harold and Kumar second movie.

Harold: I don't know after this incident how I can trust the government anymore.
Bush: Guys, it's not about trusting the government. You don't have to trust the government to be a good American. Heck I'm in the government and I don't even trust it.

I'm not lumping all Republicans as 'rednecks,' especially because the old white guy isn't always the Republican.  Haven't you noticed that every single president we've ever had has always been a rich white guy? Hmmm, ponder that.  George Wallace, the fun fact of the day guy was part of a third party - an old rich white guy, and a racist.  Not a Republican.

QuoteHaven't you noticed that every single president we've ever had has always been a rich white guy?

Pondered, but more importantly RESEARCHED.

Two of the most popular US presidents came from modest backgrounds.  Abraham Lincoln came from a poor farming family.  Clinton's father was a traveling salesman, and his stepfather was an abusive drunk.  Other lesser known presidents where not simply born into success.

And what does being 'white' have to do with it?  A quick glance shows a wide spectrum of histories.  You have soldiers, lawyers, and professional politicians.  Human rights activists and machiavellian power wielders.

QuoteEconomy sucks because of our shit head president George W. Bush, starting this shit in the middle east and calling it a "war"

Or MAYBE, just MAYBE, it has something to do with bad mortgage practices and loans.  But instead of actually trying to figure out why there's talk of spending 700 billion+ in American tax dollars to 'bail out' AIG and other companies, let's just blame it on W and the Iraq War.  After all, if there wasn't a war in Iraq, people would NEVER have made so many risky mortgage investments.  Next up, the theory that Kosovo was behind the .com fallout.

Quote*Our* votes don't mean jack squat, we learned it in high school guys, it's all electoral college, our votes are just there make it feel like we really count, when in all if no one goes to the polls on voting day it wouldn't make a single difference.

Under 25,000 votes would have changed the election between Carter and Ford.  And that's not even the smallest margin of difference in electoral votes.  How many new voter's registered in 2004?  A lot more than 25,000, and enough to make a difference.

QuoteOh one more thing, how is it that the middle east can fight us so well? We have the best technology in the world, yet we can't defeat a third world country.

You have to understand the difference in fighting an insurgency and fighting a conventional war.  The insurgents don't have to win fights.  In fact, few major insurgent operations have succeeded.  I have not heard of any major attacks result in anything other than complete annihilation for the insurgents.

It is not about technology, it is about people, building up security and handing out jobs.  One of the most succesful programs, the Sons of Iraq, had nothing to do with technology.  But as long as people don't feel safe enough to go out for an ice cream cone and feel it's America's fault the power isn't always on, Iraq cannot be viewed as 'mission accomplished'.

QuoteSo where is Bin Laden?

Somewhere on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan, making his overblown video tapes while on the run and not planning anything of importance in the last eight years.

And while it'd be great to catch him, really great, it's important not to get too caught up on him, keeping in mind that Al-Qaeda and similar organizations are not bound to any single leader.  Organizations such as AQI don't even receive instruction from him.  And AQI is a great example of how unimportant the leadership can be at times.  Zarqawi made himself out to be such a public figurehead for the insurgency, but when he died you could see how just little he mattered.

If I could vote (I'm only 17) I'd vote for Obama since I agree with more of his views than McCain's. In all honesty I don't like either politician and I wasn't too fond of Hilary. I really dislike Palin though. I just don't agree with her on anything. She's too ultra Christian conservative for my taste.

I'm actually more socialist than anything.

You're talking about the Electoral College right?  It's really not as simple as a group of people showing up and voting based on their own bias.  Basically each state has a set number of votes in the elctoral college.  For example we'll use my home state of Nevada, Nevada has 5 votes in the Electoral College.  Each party with a Presidential Candidate on the state ballot has 5 voters sworn to vote for their parties representative.  When the popular vote for the state is counted the party with the most popular votes sends their 5 representatives to vote in the Electoral College.  This is designed to protect states with smaller populations from being ignored.  There's a lot of argument that it defeats the principles of democracy because it's an indirect voting system.  We don't vote for the President, we vote for the designated voters.

While I am in favor of a changing the system to reflect the popular vote instead of the electoral college, I still think the system we have is adequate.

Your vote DOES mean something.  And you can affect change by taking part in the democratic process.  There are a lot of instances where the result of an election was decided by just one vote.

The Electoral College Should have ben done away with after the election of 1888 when Benjamin Harrison won the election via the electorial vote , but Grover Cleveland had a  sizable  margin of the popular vote.

The sad thing is that that is true for many places in the U.S. right now as well. How can you help an outside country achieve that when you can't even achieve that in your own country? -.-;

And even with good technology, one can't win if they go in without a plan and without proper knowledge of what is being dealt with, where the problems are, etc etc. And the ability to receive knowledge necessary to success. And its never a good thing nor helps when domestic and foreign peoples cannot tell what a country's priorities are.

As for the candidates, I really like Obama. He has a good head on his shoulders and is down to earth. I think he'd think things through and make the right decision. With things as bad as they are, we really need someone that can do that.

I've always thought McCain is out of date. And I Hate Palin. Too religious, too extreme, too corrupt, too f'ing scary. D: If you want to know my reasons, go read the other thread. XP And she's no MILF for me. Who'd want to f' that? D: She not f'able in my book nor nor if I was gay, would I want to f' that.

As for leaving the country if McCain was elected, forget that; I'd probably want to leave the country if Palin was President. Not only is that scary but its very likely that she'd make the country someplace I couldn't stand to live in. And if she becomes extremely fanatical, I'm f'd and not in remotely a good sense; I'd be one of the first to get burned at the stake. D: Hopefully not literally... >.>;

As for votes not counting; that isn't true. Votes do as long as they are for the two main parties. Anything else is vote suicide.

Rich white men have been in power a lot because we are still stuck in the middle ages in the cultural sense. Rich still equals power. As for race issues, we haven't remotely destroyed racism and sexism. How many centuries have we been battling the race and sex issues? -.-; If people still claim their wives as possessions on their tax forms, it is still an issue.
It is true that not all presidents are rich or from rich backgrounds but now days, it can make or break an election. TV ads, radio ads, etc cost a lot of money. Live speeches don't necessarily cost a lot. One could just show up somewhere and start speaking. Pre-tv and pre-radio, it was only live speeches and newspaper articles. And the articles did your work for you. You were probably covered as long as you either have enough for travel expenses, decorations, etc.
