Ideas and Suggestions / Re: World of Concraft
April 08, 2011, 11:51:36 PM
There was a version of this at blizzcon the past couple years. To motivate people to participate, there should be some prize (or a chance to win a prize) for those who completed all their quests. I think, in terms of organization and logistics, providing classes for the more senior veterans of Fanime Con might be a bit too much. But this is a very good idea in providing another layer of fun and entertainment for the fanime goers... especially for events/aspects of the con that a con-goer would not have explored/quested if it were not for this contest.

I'm playing that very song, and I'm friends with DJ Amaya. Come support me during my set!

la vics for mexican (orange sauce!)

pho tau bay for some delicious pho

Plus 1 for la vics! I recommend this place highly! Don't be turned away by the outside decor, or the indie san jose state college students. This is quite possibly the best mexican food nor cal has to offer.

I have seen battery powered light sticks, which look the same as the 2nd type of glowsticks there, actually, have used a few of these at work before. would they be allowed if they were checked by rovers?

I've seen these light sticks before. They're a little brighter, but I think they work just great. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a glowstick alternative.

Depending on how much space and time is available, I'd think that a main floor for the hardcore jcore stuff should run throughout the night. An alternative room could play different styles.

However, in both spaces, a line-up of the genres and styles needs to be publicized very clearly. I think most people who attend the "dance" are expecting more of a hardcore style of dance. So, the people who voted in this forum for asian pop and other genres need to be well-informed of where/when that will be played. it's about informing the right audience for the right genre.

Namie Amuro, the jpop diva queen, let the korean girlies of After School join in a single "Make it Happen" that was released a few hours ago.

General Anime Chat / Your favorite Anime Villains
February 20, 2011, 09:51:34 PM
It's the bad guys that drive the story. Some more than others. Some I really love to hate. Some of these villains are great multi-dimensional characters that don't always make the sexy spotlight just because they're the antagonist. Let's start a thread on your favorite baddies.

I'll go first. >_>

I actually have 3. The first is Aku from  Samurai Jack . For being the grand evil shapeshifting master of darkness, Aku ironically relies upon the foiled attempts of minions to take out Samurai Jack -- which makes for some pretty good comic relief.

The second is Hisoka from  Hunter x Hunter. What I love about this guy is that, like his nen type states, he's unpredictable. While the other villains and protagonists of the anime may have clear motives and goals, Hisoka likes to keep you guessing. He receives some sort of erotic satisfaction from killing difficult opponents, which makes for excellent antagonist material. I honestly follow hunterxhunter just so I can see how Hisoka prepares Gon to become his next meal.

Lastly, there's this silly guy in an orange mask who appears to have more nefarious goals than his outward persona appears to let on...

Thanks for the awesome feedback, Necara. Your song recommendations are all ones that I have and love. In hindsight I probably should have cut the hip-hop section completely in favor of more house/kpop/pop.

Its interesting that you mention sorry sorry at that point in the mix because I did think of using a smooth house remix of that song at that point, but I decided that fanime probably wouldn't want to hear any smooth house.  :D lolz

I just found out that Yuu Asakawa did some voice acting for vocaloid. I gotta get on that.

I think, as other commentors have noted, Fanime should play music that we can't hear anywhere else. And, based on past years it looks like there will be enough of a crowd that will want to dance to the big umbrella of EDM. Even though I spin top 40 and hip hop, I think these genres should be avoided because its available at so many other venues. What's special about anime cons should be the anime music, jpop, and other songs that may be affiliated with otaku culture.

If we're not going with a bloc of one musical genre per dj session, then, in my opinion, (and again this is just personally me) it should be possible to get five minutes of happy hardcore and five minutes of dubstep every hour. While not overbearing, it's something to satisfy the ones who like the two genres, and it's not too long for the people who hate the genres. Dub step tends to be in slow bpm range and happy hardcore the opposite (arguably the same ends of the 'horn' (180 bpm = 90 bpm)), but the moods of the two bpm ranges prevent dancers from completely exhausting themselves out while keeping them on the floor. Ideally dj's should know when to drop happy hardcore and dubstep based on crowd reaction. I don't really like too much of either, but I think they can be tactfully implemented.

(24:00) The music doesnt mesh with the background music to me.. like someone random is singing over the actual music.

Noted. Thanks for the heads up. The song uses virtually the same chords as the original which can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaEGxukpPSs

(52:30ish) lol this might be a bit too much DJing.. it sounded like there were malfunctions with the speaker system

Welcome to dubstep. I don't think I liked it too much when I first heard the genre either, but it has a real cult-like following. You now know that you don't like dubstep.

(1:02:00) -facepalm- >__< -gets off dance floor-

yeah that's lil jon for ya. I'd prefer not to any hip hop at all, but I've had to do it a few dances in the past because it's so popular here in the bay. The poll here also indicates that it's popular.

(1:17:00) Uhoh, it's boring and repetitive now XD and I dont like the song you mixed it with.

Yeah I agree with your view on the repetitive nature of this song. I think this is the chew fu remix, but I plan on creating a shortened edit.

I think there's an abundance of YG material because YG releases their accapellas and instrumentals. My favorite girlies are 2ne1 so that probably needs to be reduced. I have plenty of other non yg kpop material.

In the beginning, I thought, "This is nice, but not really dance-able. Needs more BPM."  Overall, the first 25 minutes seemed pretty tame. When it picked up around 26:00, I was like "Finally! I could actually dance to this!" At around 47:00, it switched to songs I knew and kind of like, but don't usually listen to on my own time. When it switched to Hip-hop at 1:04:00, you ruined your good streak with me. After about two minutes, I skipped forward to 1:15:00. If I had been in the dance room, I probably would have left at that point. The mix stopped being bothersome, but it never quite redeemed itself after that.

Don't take my critque as the final say on whether or not it's good. I'm aware that my musical tastes differ from other people's. I'm just giving my view on it. Maybe everybody else likes this style. I've only been to Fanime once, and I've only been listening to EDM religiously for around 6 months or so, so I suppose I'm still considered "new." Looking at the poll, I can see why you mixed what you did. Maybe it works for someone out there, but it didn't really have any of my favorite genre.

My verdict:
Flow: A-
Tempo: C+
Content: D
Overall: C
Favorite Part: 26:00 - 47:00

Related to the thread as a whole, here are some samples of what I usually listen to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3OXSHK840w (Scott Brown - This is Hardcore)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANI-TzTN4V0 (Manian - Welcome to the Club (Darren Styles Mix))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJlxAv26R0s (Styles and Breeze - Weekend Has Come)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G3qBSZKXx8 (S3RL - Pretty Rave Girl)

If I heard stuff like that, I would be happy. ^^

Yeah I can't say that I like listening or dancing to hip hop much either, but it's there for the ones who do like it and it's in the mix just to show that I can do it if necessary. And this mix doesn't have any hardcore-- something I should have considered before burning and submitting. I'll practice spinning to more hardcore tracks. This past weekend I was at a house party where this genre was played frequently. Here's your cookie!

Okay all y'alls,

I just submitted my dj application to the fanime staff. In it, I included an hour and a half mix of all the stuff I'd be willing to spin. I'd like to share that mix here, because this thread guided me in the music selection process (so thanks guys!!!).

You can download the mix here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?d3to7v7vs2krm4q

Here's the roadmap of the musical genres that I provided for the staff:

Introduction/final-fantasy trance (0:01-6:40) ->
Anime-trance (12:30-26:00) ->
Anime-house (26:01-37:26) ->
kpop-house (37:28-47:00) ->
kpop/jpop/top 40 mashups (47:20-1:02:30) ->
Hip-Hop/kpop mashups (1:04:00-1:14:30) ->
Finale medley stuff (1:28:00-1:32:15).

Let me know what you think, especially if there are parts you don't like. I'll give you a virtual cookie. (maybe direct message me your response so we don't flood this thread with something off-topic.)

:D

ps- there's a tiny bit of dubstep in there just so I can say I played it. :p

I think a couple of us may want to re-vote. is there a way to do that?
#57
Aw man, I love beats antique. I've seen them live a couple times in oakland and san diego.

I'm composing a mix to submit for the dj application based on your responses here. How does trance/jpop/kpop/house/top40 mashups sound?

Incredible Stuff I can Make / Re: [music] Anime Mix
February 03, 2011, 08:45:31 PM
aww man, not a fan of the kpop? :p

I made that transition to get some dub step sounds in there... because I understand dubstep is starting to pick up in popularity.
#59
I don't know anything about cosplay or prop making, but they look pretty cool to me. I think I personally prefer the black one over the white one because of the frame.

This is very impressive! maybe my speakers suck, but maybe more bass? That's only a very minute suggestion; what you have is pretty rockin' awesome!
