I'm very interested in doing the karaoke contest this year -- haven't participated in like 5 years now! But I also hope there are updates soon, 'cause I can only do it if I'm not busy doing something else at the same time. I know it's usually always Friday night but yeah.

I don't think I'll be entering the contest this year (my panels are right around the same time, and I think I want to hit up the Old School Gathering and the Swap Meet and other things I don't normally get to do when I enter the contest), but I'll be ever-present at Open Mic. I'm a permanent fixture of karaoke at this point. ;]

I have a few ideas of what I want to sing for Open Mic...we'll see. I would love to sing the OP of Rose of Versailles as Lady Oscar, but that depends on when I wear that costume.

Whether I do or don't depends on if I can recruit some buddies of mine to do a group with me.  I want to change up from my "sing all the Seramyu villain songs" stunt I have done in the past, and trying get a group so we can do 3-4 part harmony would be awesome.  Doing the Attack on Titan theme might be enough to convince them to participate? We'd have to figure out a finals song though.  (At which point I try to convert them to the church of Kalafina)

Of course, I am either the closest or second closest to soprano in my group of friends (really a mezzo), so that might turn out ....interesting....

I definitely want to get out to open mic though. Hopefully if I can't convince people to compete with me, I can at least get on of my second alto friends to sing Uranus's part in the new Sailor Moon Crystal ending with me. I don't think it's in my baritone hubby's range, although it does get super low.

Everything I want to sing is from a 90s anime because I'm old. /salute

Oh god, yes. I sing a weird combination of '90s anime music, jazz, and quirky stuff like Guitar Vader. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I might have to arrange my cosplay schedule just so I can wear Oscar at a time when karaoke open mic is going on! I'm also hoping to sing Toki Ni Ai Wa... while dressed as movie!Utena, but I'll probably sing that regardless of my costume at the time. Not that I can pull off that song, but it'll still be fun!

This will be the first year in awhile that my costume won't match the song I'm singing, but oh well haha

How do you apply for the karaoke contest?

typically the karaoke people make a post about the competition and have the rules, the signup link and the song book links in that post. but...i don't see one yet...
and fanime is in a month...

preliminary round accepts 25 people (i think), and ur allowed to sing for 2.5 minutes (or did they change it back to 2 mins...?) and the song has to be jpop, jrock or from an anime. there's some variations of that rule. then 10 people get picked, and in the final round, u sing a song of ur choice for 5 mins.

karaoke people...where art thou...? :/

Last year, it was 1.5 minutes for the preliminary round, I believe. And that could start anywhere in the song, not just the beginning. Finals round was still 5 minutes.

For song choice, Japanese popular music (J-pop, J-rock, J-jazz, etc. not connected to anime), anime music, and Japanese-origin game music was allowed (and I believe that is games of Japanese origin, whether the song is or not? Someone correct me if I'm wrong). There might be an allowance for K-pop, but I don't remember since that's not what I'm into myself. Also, one of your songs, whether prelim or finals, had to be from an anime. I assume they'll keep the same rules this time around, since there's usually only minor changes (if any) to the rules.

I'm sure the karaoke staff will be in here soon to post about the rules and online sign-ups. There's also usually some slots reserved for at-con signups.

I am here! Sorry if I took too long for you guys. I'll get a couple things out of the way and then try to address any questions that were in this thread.

First, the thread for song requests for 2016 are open, post anything and everything you can think of. We can't always find it but we try to keep a record of it just in case.

Next, Contests signups will be coming within the next couple of days. I'm going to aim for the 5th, with opening time around 3pm. I should also have the rules up by then as well, though I don't think we've changed much from last year so if you want a refresher and can find them, the 2015 rules are a good guideline.

Actually there weren't that many questions, other than where I was. Come on, I usually don't wake up until may 1st! I've been working on improving our system and giving it a lot of extra little fun things. For example, our lyric system now supports kanji lyrics for our native speakers, along with yomigana. Only for select songs so far, but we're improving our selection slowly. I know that if I get enough time between now and con, I want to add a Jäger function. You can guess what that will do.

We're sticking with a minute and a half or verse/chorus for prelims. I have to get back to you on the final number of entrants, because it certainly isn't 25 but I'm not sure if we're going with the number we used last year.

Anyway, hope that clears up a few things. More discussion! More questions! More singing preparations! Heck, if you even have suggestions for things, I can't make any promises but I can at least hear what you have to say! Just have fun!

do you mean here here as in this specific thread, or just in the 'live programming and events' section?
will you be making an original and separate karaoke 2016 thread?

I have a question! The rules state that convention staff are not allowed to join the competition - do I count as staff if I'm participating in Fanimaid?

Both. All of the above. Yes. We'll have a main post (that I'll try to get sticky) for contest rules and online registration but I'll also point it out in this thread when it's ready.

Please note, I know it's after 3 but I actually have to rebuild one of our forms from scratch here at the last second. I'm sorry for those of you who are diligent and ready to go, I'll try to have it up by 4pm at the latest.

It's out right now! Go check it out if you haven't yet (http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,20594.0.html)
I'll get it stickied as soon as I can, but until then at least there's a link in a safe place.

I answered this question in private already but to clear it up for anyone else who might be grappling with this - If you paid for an attendee badge, you can participate in the contest. If you were given a staff badge, you can't. If you somehow have both, then you definitely need to talk to us directly and explain your situation.
