Title: Did you bring enough?
Post by: dealerJason on June 01, 2005, 02:21:17 PM
So, did you bring enough money to FanimeCon 2005?

If yes, what couldn't you find?

If no, what did you spend all your money on?

Yes, I couldn't find the Naruto Data Book which sold out on the first day (I was going to buy it, but I thought they'd still have it the next day) nor a few manga titles and stuff. However, I was satisfied with everything I purchased.

i btrought way too much. i was looking for more posters, more pins, more cell phone straps that were not full metal alchemist, more clothing (i almost bought a dress, but the smallest size they had did not fit. >.<)

Is there an online vendor we could invite that has video game merchandise?

I bought 500.00 and came back with 240.00/ I think there wasn't enough vendor variety. I spent 110.00 on manga at the swap meet tho'.

I keep seeing this reference to variety, but what is this variety you speak of?  What do you want to see more of in the dealers room?  Please be SPECIFIC!

I think I know what this "variety" thing is referring to....

It doesn't help when a majority of the dealers have an account with Diamond Distributions. With so little distributors, it's hard for a dealer to have variety when everyone orders the same merchandise for their storefront.

well, there's this place. http://www.tisinc99.com/index.html

BUt i think that dealers should also try to get just japanese culture stuff. like stuff that they sell on www.j-list.com . that would add some different things to the merchendise selection.

OH, we have tried for 3 YEARS to get J-List, they don't want to come.  This year, we thought we had them, but they backed out.  We will try again next year.

Frumpy, you are SO right, most everyone goes through Diamond Distribution, with a few, like Digital Disc, Anime 101, Anime Palace, going straight to Japan for their product.

What I would like to see is American stores being able to import directly from Japan.  The problem is that too many companies are sitting on their Merchandising rights.  Because these companies want to protect their investment, they make sure that imported product is expensive.  While I want Bandai, ADV, Funimation, and the rest to make money, I don't like that it limits what dealers can sell.

I think i was aware of that.... but that is such crap. it's not like they're not in the CA area and it's not like they wouldnt make any money.

did they give any reaons? are they complaining about the cost of getting a table or two? because if that's the case, i'll have a fun raiser to pay for their table(s). what in the great Otaku's name will it take to get J-list to fanime?!

Don't buy anything from J-List until they show up to FanimeCon!

On top of that, another reason why dealers don't order straight from Japan is the high cost of shipping and handling fees. And people always wonder why imported stuff is so expensive.....

I've said this in other threads, and I'll say it again:

While it's probably very tempting for dealers to jump on the bandwagon and carry things from the most popular animes (Bleach and Naruto for example) it's nice when we get to see things from other series.

Umm... hmm. Yeah, I was actually pretty surprised with the amount of stuff that was imported, I was half-expecting cheap american crap. I don't know why, I've gone for 3 years now.

Good luck getting J-List.

Oh! I also wanted a Domo-Kun plushie and a Naruto "Akatsuki" dog tag but that would've blew off another like $40 from me which I didn't have >.<

I propose that we go to Japan with some huge hooks and cords and pull the islands of Japan closer to the United States, preferrably near San Jose xD

Then we could buy their country somehow and make a monopoly on it. Instead of Japan, we'll call it Fanipan (Fanime + Japan) and make it a year-round festival of animation. =P

XD I think I definately brought enough. I'm glad I didn't went nuts over the money either... but buying a ZZ CD that includes two music videos i think, for 35 $ made a big dent to my wallet...
but yea, i brought enough. Got two gaia shirts for free, so that saved me money...

I think they should have more Death Note items, if anyone knows what that is. I'm utterly obsessed with the series... there was only one table that sold some... phone straps and stickers. And I wasn't about to buy three stickers for 8 dollars... so phone strap it was!
Oh yea, I'm also hoping there'll be more KH items other than those figurines. Perhaps posters or something! <3

I had ALOT of money left over, and I was really sad too because I had pretty much been saving up the entire year, only tind there wasn't anything that interested me. :(

As I'm sure it has been stated practically everywhere, alot of everything that seemed to be for sale was the same at every booth. I will echo that I wish for more variety, and I'll try to give some examples.

While true, I do wish some less poplular animes ( such as Candidate for Goddess, Princess TuTu, etc. ) I was still a bit saddened by even the lack of different items I found for some extremely popular series such as Naruto. I LOVE Naruto, but even there, I couldn't find much of what I was hoping to find. Possibly more merchandice with lesser known characters? I get so sick of always seeing Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke and Kakashi everywhere. The only thing I was able to find were cell phone keychains.
:( No plushies at all, I doubt they even make them...

Also, I couldn't find many anime cds, and the once I did manage to scope out were waaaaaaay overpriced. But yeah, I'm sure you've had people tell you that already.

One other thing. Wall scrolls. Once again, more varietly with as I mentioned, lesser favored characters and possibly more obscure anime.

Oh yes, pins, I only seemed to find like maybe three or four different series when it came to pins. It doesn't even matter if their obscure or not, just pretty please, a different selection of pins! They were hardly any, sad for collectors like my sister. :(

Oh yes, once last thing. How about different artists at Artist Alley? Not that their artwork wasn't magnificent ( cause it really was! ) but I just saw alot of the same work from last year which was kind of a let down, cause Artist Row is usually once of my favorite places to go. ^^

Ok...I hope that helped even a little. :)

Hmm. Given my lack of storage space in the room and semi-indiscriminate interest in anime, I preferred the swap meet over the dealer's room. Yes, I know dealers don't want to sell their stuff at clearance prices, but I pretty much did my shopping on Monday, and bought plushies at 20% off or lower.

I did like the non-dealer booths in the dealer's room -- although I was semi-expecting that if someone had a booth in the dealer's room, they'd also have a live panel.

Also, some dealers would have tied well with certain events. For example, one dealer was selling boardgames, but I didn't see any flyers from him in the tabletop gaming room.

I DID bring enough....but next time I'm going to withdrawl more at once from the machine. Because of the stupid fees from the fcking ATM, I ended up paying like 6 bucks or more...which meant 2 discounted manga novels. Although I DID get a lot of cool stuff, next time I'm going to be more thrifty ^^;  Like waiting until the last day to get my manga, and testing the sharpness of any bladed weapons I want to get, and other fun stuff.
Title: Did you bring enough?
Post by: Ayanami Rei First Child on October 12, 2005, 10:49:42 PM
I  brought enough, but the ATM fees were a good amount, not to mention I rushed too much at the end to buy manga......and completely missed the people that were selling manga for $3 each. It turned out I REALLY loved that series and didn't have enough to buy as much as I would have....DAMN YOU 25% OFF TENCHI MUYO!! :(

Next year I'll bring all my cash straight up....and then wait for some serious sales on the last day. Gotta make sure I visit ALL the booths and wait until closer to the last minute to buy stuff....Whoever had that $3 manga I'll be buying lots n lots this year!! *_*

more music. i ran around everywhere looking for a CD from my favorite artist, but then i realized that since all the j-rock was overly popular stuff and tofu records, they would not have an import of some semi-obscure (but gaining in popularity quickly) artist.

Welcome to the harsh reality of the Fanime dealer's room. :D

The other harsh reality is that most things are very expensive. I couldn't get that Osaka plushie I wanted because it was $75 :( For a plushie? I'm not all that hardcore when it comes to AzuDai...

I hope to see more figures and plushies next year, things that can't be found at Suncoast or common places like that. I really wanted a Kasumi from DOA figure SO bad, but I couldn't find any. I really liked the "household items" some dealers were selling. Like the Mizuho pillowcase, the Pitaten mugs and such. I'd love to see more of those things! I also like cell phone straps, pins and pens! It would be nice to have a variety of series to choose from. Who am I kidding, even if I don't find what I want, I still find things to spend all my cash on. As long as someone is selling something, I'll be in the dealers room, buying.

I didn't bring enough and I kinda expected that I hadn't, but I didn't have any more :p.  I really want to see that Bandai booth again.  I'm such a huge fan of the little snap together models and stuff and they had a lot of great deals there.  I'd like to be able to get a lot more next Fanime cause man I went through those in a heartbeat and I bought like 10.  Lol.  I think for me though, the variety wasn't a problem because it was my first time to a convention thing, so everything was new to me, but that's me :).

But yeah, it was awesome :)

You mean the one in the huuuuuuuge box with the awesome angel wings from Endless Waltz?  Cause yeah, I've been wanting that forever, just never been gutsy enough to fish out the cash for it, it's like 150 or something regularly.  But yes, if Bandai isn't there next year it's going to suck for me in the dealers room cause man they got most of my money.  They offered me deals too, the people who worked there were really awesome and everything, helpful, etc etc.  It was good stuff.  I bought the entire Gundam Wing series from them and saved like 50 bucks on it, and 10 models, or so, I don't remember how many I bought, but I do remember I did them all in like one day lol.  I probably spend about 250 dollars there, and probably saved close to 100 off of retail prices (like what you would have to pay in Kmart or Walmart or some other evil corporation that never seems to carry the one model you want...grrrrr).  Man, can't wait til next Fanime.  It's going to be so awesome.  I loved it the first time for me, and I know I'll love it again, there's nothing quite like it.

Well that's just totally evil!! I am in search of that one model....yes it's the gorgeous one from that movie with the angel wings *_*   Although my friend hates it because it defies the nature of physics......it's constantly loosing "feathers" as it flies....yet it always has the same shape.....<.<;;

I wanted to have it be something that me and my dad could do together since we never really do stuff anymore....and well....our bond isn't very strong at all. We hardly even talk unless I'm in trouble n stuff....or some way I can improve myself....ugh.

Has your friend ever watched Gundam Wing?  The whole show defies the nature of physics.  It wasn't designed to be realistic lol.  I mean, you watch the show and you seem them whipping at speeds that most planes in the world can't go, and then zipping left and right and zig zag at speeds that would liquify any human brain inside.  I think angel wings that drop feathers all the time, yet maintain their shape are the least of our worries in the realm of physics lol.

Have you tried looking online for it at like Anime Castle or something like that?  (Anima Castle is pretty good, usually has rather good prices, and in my experience, quick to respond, good time for shipping, just all around good company).

Anywhoodles.

I usually spend between $300- $800 at anime cons and upwards of $2000 at the San Diego Comic Convention. It's usually because I find some really cool things I can't find anywhere else. Like, Designer toys or con exclusives. Some of the things that catch my pocket book are great deals. You throw some of those at me and I'm like a kid in a candy store. Oh... and art from the artist are a huge plus for me.

Sadly, I did not have enough money for Fanime 2005 because I ended up spending half of my money on my ex-bf(he was my bf at the time of the con) because he forgot to bring his money and I only bought:

2 Fruits Basket manga($16)
1 FMA scroll($12)
2 cloth Naruto headbands($20)
2 metal Naruto headband($20)
and a few bucks worth of arcade tokens.

I bought my bf a cloth and a metal Naruto headband. He still hasn't paid me back, but whatever... that's what relationships do to your walletU_U.

Whatever was left, I used it on food since I was there all day. Overall, I brought around $75 worth of money and was completely burnt out at the end of the day(I only stayed for one day on a Sunday).

I think I brought enough, but I'm planning on bringing more this year.

I brought $100 last year and had I think $20 more or less left over.

I bought:

Domo-kun T-shirt
FLCL T-shirt (got a free 'P!' sticker! score!~)
2 ZZ CDs (Definitive Energy Flow and A to ZZ w/ DVD both signed ^__^'')

I wanted to buy more, but I can't seem to not have at least $100 in my wallet. Therefore, I didn't spend all of my $100 Fanime money.. -_-''

That's why I'm bringing more like 1000 this year.

Hopefully I can get all the stuff I have on my list. I will be going for harder to get items unless I find a really good deal on a box set I'm looking for. So, yeah.

I brought roughly $150-$200 to Fanime last year. (my friends called me a "big spender") To break it down, this is what I got:

Gaia online poster (W00T!)
Naruto wall scroll
Various manga (3-5)
A few DVDs (one or two)
L'arc en Ciel album SMILE :D

What I still wanted to get:

MORE MANGA!!!
MORE WALL SCROLLS!!!
MORE DVDS!!!
MORE CDS!!!
etc., etc...

Well yes and no. It's not that prices are so ugly....it's just that there's so much STUFF. I mean we have an ENTIRE room filled with stuff for anime, along with weapon stuff. The problem is that we're more limited in funding....it's like getting into manga for the first time and walking into like a major bookstore or something. It's hard to have enough with the wonderful selection that we have.

Again, that's why I'm bringing 1000 bucks.

I can get my fill of shirts, wall scrolls and DVDs while I'm there.

I'm going to save a hundred or two to buy manga though, probably at borders if they have the buy 3 get the 4th free.

I can get like, 24-28 volumes for about 200 bucks when that's happening. ^_^

Pisht. I saw $3 manga on monday. That TOTALLY beats your get something free deal. Also there's the local comic shop in Oakland that sells manga for 25-35% off with manga every few months, so that's no biggie to get a 4th manga free ^^;

How I got the money....eh....I'll leave it to you to think about it.
Two words: swap and meet.  8)

I don't remember how much I brought last year, but it was enough. I didn't buy much, if at all. I spent more on food than anything else, too. I liked the chili dogs in the dealers room...

Gotta bring lots this time. Lots and lots. Since there's a ton of stuff I want to get. Then again, I may get some extra selling at Swap Meet.

Well, the most I had was about $40 for 2 days. Spent half of it on FOOD. >.>

Then bought some manga my sisters kept begging for, a poster of Naruto, a poster of FMA, and a poster of Grim Tales from Down Below :D

I'll be definately saving up money for next year's con >.<!!!

i hope there is some better stuff in the dealers room next year. having said that, aside from the money im going to spend on a room, i'll try to have at least $500-1000 dollars for 2007.

Not enough. I bought more for others than for myself. There was still too much stuff I wanted to get, but I ran out of money. :(

Not this year.
Personally I spent $50+ in the arcades alone.

Yeah I stayed away from the arcades, not worth my money when I can go play a console game for FREE! ^^;

I DID bring enough, but I didn't see two things I really wanted: 1. Fanime T-Shirts (If Anyone has an XL Fanime 2006 T-Shirt for sale please let me know) and a polearm >.<

I'm really hoping that they have D.N. Angel stuff....I can never find those things. I've been to so many conventions and its always the same: either playing cards, or star tin can (unless it was something really small like pencils or buttons). I'm hoping to spend no more than $500. I really hope it won't be anymore than that.... (Note to self: LEAVE CC IN HOTEL ROOM. LOCK IN SAFE IF NEEDED).

I did not bring enough money last year. It was all gone in less than 3 hours, all $200 of it.

IMO, there is never such a thing as enough money for a dealer's room.  There's always going to be something screaming for your hard-earned dough, even after you've bought a metric ton of merchandise already.

That being said, I didn't bring nearly enough on account of having moved recently and the expenses of that massacring my disposable income for some time.  Hopefully, I'll have a decent amount for next year though.

I spent almost 600 dollars in figures(mostly figures) and other things and I know there were tons of other things I wanted. I could have spent twice that much if I really didn't care to be broke for the next two weeks, so I stopped myself. Now, next year, I'll have a lot more than I did this year....hopefully.

Aside from the admission (pre-reg) I spend about $15 at the arcade, $15 on a wooden sword, $15 on a shirt, and about $20 for food/drinks.

There weren't many thing I really wanted but I want to get a cool hat next year... I just need to get one thats a little bigger than the regular hats to fit my big head.

Those hats are so cool :3

It seems like I can never bring enough money to Fanime, there's always more I want.  Last year I brought like $110 but almost half of it went into buying Ouendan 2 for the DS.  But I did manage to score some DVDs from the swap meet.

This year I'm bringing more, and I need to buy the first Ouendan before they run out again.

I'm bringing 1000 dollars again this year.

It seems to be a good amount to get everything I want.

Dude.  You can NEVER bring enough to Fanime. XD

...Unless you don't want a lot.  Then you're okay.  Unless you don't have enough for what you want, in which case you-- *hit in the face with a flaming brick* Ow. x_O;;

Um... yeah.  I usually bring enough. XD  I'm not too impulsive when I'm looking to buy things (unless it's Gundam Wing related), so I tend to have enough for the things I really want. ;D  $200 has been my usual limit, but I might bring a little more this year.  (Yay for numerous stipends!  Woo! :3)

the last couple of years there has never been anything that I've seen that i really wanted to buy; almost all of the dealers(save for a few) had the same merch, and i wasn't attracted by the selection.

hopefully this year, more dealers start to carry stuff that isn't just bleach/naruto/deathnote/dragonball...you get the idea.

I usually cap myself at $100-ish. I mostly go for the experience so I always bring enough I suppose.

Except a couple of years ago when I made an impulsive figurine collection purchase for like $110 on the last day... That set me back a bit right after May lol.

I got like 400 wingwags right now but I'm still going to save up. I might get to 600+ by Fanime.

It's really up to you.  I think I only spent ~$50 in the dealers' room last year, but I'm not a big shopper.  It really depends on what you're going to want to buy - if you're stocking up, more is better, but if not, there you are.  (Just remember to bring money for food!)

I thought I could get up to at least 500 by Fanime but all I could get is 480.00 which is pretty damn good.

It all depends on how much you think you will buy. If you are interested in a lot of animes, I would recommend bring more than $100. Because a lot of things are priced a bit more than you think they will be.Certain things might be rare and be highly priced so, you would need more than $100 .
