The title says it all: perhaps we can organize one or more Cosplay Capture the Flag games.
I have several ideas concerning this:
- There are two sides to the convention: a Hilton side and a Mariott side.
- Both sides have infodesk booths to monitor the flag status, and can thus walkie-talkie the information over to Stage Zero, who can do a play-by-play recap to those passing by/those observing.
- The pillars of the convention hall can be used as cover, thus making for an exciting game.
- Optionally, teams can also be themed.
Any suggestions and/or objections? I think it'd be pretty fun.
dont have any suggestions right now, but count me in for now...
I'm all for it! Just remember some of the forgotten animes, okay? Some people forget that we Ranma fans are still around.
I need to practice my running. Wait a minute, will running be allowed?
Ideally, it would, because you'd be using all of your power to get the flag to your base, as opposed to walking. That, and there's no way of strictly enforcing the no-running rule, if it were to come to that.
How do you play Capture the Flag? The way you explained it is weird O_o(or is that not an explanation? =_=U)
At my school, there're 3 batons on each side of the field and the closest is worth 1 point, middle is worth 2, and farthest away is 3 points and resets the game(everyone in jail is free and everyone goes back to their respective spots). And if you get tagged on the opposite side, you're in jail.
Is that the one you're talking about? If it is, then I am totally in...now I gotta actually cosplay...
There're gonna be a lot of cosplayers there from a lot of different games/anime and we only have about 5 days of the convention at MAX.(including Thursday) Probably the themed teams could be:
The usual and most obvious...
Heros VS Villians
That'll be fun...Cloud VS Sephiroth in a game of Capture the Flag...*roflmfao*
But there'll be a problem, what if their costume is bulky? They want to show it off but what if they also want to play the game...? And can weapons be used? *cough* kunaitothrowatopponents *cough* :P
i don't know if it'd be allowed inside the convention center, just for the simple fact that what if thoings become out of hand etc~ that sounds like fun though =X!
I can see 2 things going wrong already.
1. Hyper-Active cosplayers -RUNNING-
2. Hyper-Active cosplayers -RUNNING- through a crowded convention center.
What about playing in Plaza de Caesar Chavez? (That park in front of the Fairmont).
Barnes: That would be a wonderful idea -- it doesn't have to be in the convention center. Alternatively, we could use the Discovery Meadow (although the field there cannot be divided into two congruent parts, making organization a bit harder).
Uzutake: The list of things in my initial post were ideas, as I assume most people know how to play CTF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capture_the_flag) with the jail variant. I personally like to use one flag per team, as both teams can totally focus on getting the flag/defending the flag, as opposed to distributing their attention to more than one target. It makes for a game that's much more intense.
That, and we don't have to have themed teams. ^^; Since some people may be cosplaying from a series that's rather under-represented or oldschool (say, Slayers), I'd like for them not to get left out when we suddenly have this Bleach vs. Naruto fight.
And I'd prefer weaponless CTF, for safety's sake. If you really want weapons, play an FPS instead.
Maybe the themes could be more general.
"Girls go!" (By current, non-cosplay identity)
"Boys go!" (Same thing)
"Cosplayers in Red/{insert color here} go!"
"Ages 15-20 go!"
It'd be far less exclusive.
Only main concerns:
Area needed for the event
Cosplays that may be ruined due to pulling/running/etc.
Injuries
Pocky-related fatalities
Just to list...^^

Now you've got me thinking: Capture The Box Of Giant Pocky...
Count me in. *Mental note* Another reason to get a hotel for 2007.
that sounds like fun!! lol

Wait, you need a hotel?
I have no idea what he refers to...^^; When I meant Mariott v. Hilton, I mean just sides, not actual I'm-staying-in-the-hotel teams...^^;
Unless he's talking about playing in the night, when close to no one is in the convention center.
At least HE doesn't have to rely on the bus system to get home and back... *grumbles about FC'06 and lacking money for a hotel*

hmmm...actually thats not a bad idea. if we do this in the nighttime there would be less of a problem of accidentaly running into people and there would be alot more open space.
that, and if you wanted to cheat, you could run with the enemy's flag into the hentai room, forcing someone over 18 to go in and catch you.
Yaoi room for extra effect 0_o
I also think Discovery Meadow would be good too.
Logistically, this sounds difficult. But conceptually, it sounds freaking awesome.
The convention center would be a much cooler locale, but I think that the con staff would have to veto it. No running in the center, even at night when it's relatively empty. The field would be probably okay (except it might be in use) but certainly harder to partition.
As for marking teams, it'd be hard. Dividing them by gender would probably give the males' team a sizeable advantage, because the number of guys who would attend Fanime and want to play CTF would probably be much greater than the number of girls. Also, girls' cosplays might be more intricate, therefore, more prone to damage if worn in the game.
Here's another thought: what if (to make it more manageable) we made this a side-event, not taking place during Fanime, but a completely different time? Sort of like a gathering. Turnout would be significantly smaller, but we'd have considerably more options for working out the kinks, no responsibility to the con center (assuming it wouldn't be held there), etc.

The yaoi part is good.
We can always put the flag in a precarious place...
Fun for the whole family!
Quote from: "mDuo13"As for marking teams, it'd be hard.
No, not at all!
All we need are colored t-shirts, two colors, doesn't matter which one. (No Red vs. Blue jokes, please. ;)) Decent colored t-shirts can be found for relatively cheap at flea markets (last I saw, it was 4 for $10 -- ideally, we'd want 16 people, 8 per side.)
Optionally, later on, we take the t-shirts back, stamp them with "I participated in FanimeCon '07 Capture The Flag (and all I got was this stupid t-shirt)" and sell it to acquire money reserves for the
next batch of competitors. :D
edit I strongly approve of testing this out first before figuring out/playing at the real thing. Does anyone have a football field at their school that we can use, or a general field, or something?

Wait, you need a hotel?
Oops -__- Clarification: I have been thinking about getting a hotel room since Fanime 06. I live 15 minutes away. Unfortunately, this year I went back home too many times. Too much driving back and forth T__T
With a hotel room, I can change cosplays and I have my fun stuff anytime I need it without having to go back home XD
Spiritsnare, I live across the street from a school. Big open field. Plenty of parking along the street. School is in a neighborhood.
If it weren't for the fact I'm super far from you guys, there's a park right down the street from my house that has a rather large field as well as an elementary school right next to it. If that doesn't work, there's a HUGE park a little further down from my house that has more than enough field room for anything.
Of course I'm all the way in Benicia.

Seriously. Not everyone would be accepting of cosplayers running around in the neighborhood park capturing flags.
And as far as teams go...The OFNC will enter the game as a team! 8)
There's also a large open, public field that's only about 4 doors down from my house. (Ever heard of Biebrach park? Across the street from Gardener Elementary?) Only thing is, it's usually being used by people playing soccer. And the neighborhood might not be the most supportive for a bunch of people in cosplay. But it's pretty close to Fanime (10-minute walk?).
Also, what is "OFNC?" Official Fans of Nanashi Club?
EDIT: *looks at other topics in forum* Oh.

Sounds like we'll need to have a force-themed game on the side...^^;
By the way, I just took a look at your thread and praise you for not accepting Narutards. <3

It's not public. I understand your point XD Personally, I don't see a problem, though. Just have to behave ourselves ^_^
Hm...We can always go solid snake and sneak around the convention center. And if were just seen were caught. As to prevent running

Ooh! I know how we could test it!
If you guys came to Scotts Valley, we could...
borrow my former high school's field... provided it's not in use. Otherwise, we could always try my (very!) large street in front'a my house.
Or there's some fields in Santa Cruz! We could easily find a park around here!

Eheheheheh...
Don't worry, your time will soon come. ^^; Summer isn't the only time we're holding gatherings, after all.
-_- True enough. But just know that Scotts Valley is just a busdrive over the hill, and there's stores, friendly people, and COFFEE!
No culture of note, not until the music studio gets put in... but there's COFFEE! Lots'a coffee.
Well however this happens i'll do my best to be a part of it.
This sounds like a brilliant idea. I would see it being a lot more fun through the convention center but due to the fact that they yelled at me for running 5 feet to glomp someone I don't think they would let it slide. A round MGS style would be cool though. Having to sneak around and like hide in mobs that are walking. I'm even going as a box so I'd have some extra fun with that. Though I would be worried about some of my cosplays.... I could see white getting really dirty in the fields and other stuff ripping. So possibly have flags like flag football to prevent injuries to people and cosplays?
the only way i could imagine this happening in the convention center is if it were done in the evening time, most likely after 10 when the majority of people are going to their rooms to sleep.
one team is located on one side of the con center and the other team is on the other side, respectively. cosplays wouldn't be required, but are encouraged for possible pictures. each team would only have one flag to defend.
since it is capture the flag, there would have to be a way of eliminating players during each round.
the best way(and quite possibly the safest way) to do this would be to arm each player with either one, two or three beanbags/hacky-sacks. they are fairly safe and prevent serious injury/damage to the players involved and to the con center.
if i have any more ideas, i'll edit this post.
=edit=
another fun game that i dont think will be allowed in the con center would be to have a couple rounds of dodgeball in the e-gaming room(there was a big ole empty space there this year that could have been used for something fun). hey, only time will tell...

I'm pretty sure, however, that we won't be allowed to do this in the con center -- beanbags or not. So, I suppose, we'll be playing CTF with the normal "HA, TAG, YOU'RE IN JAIL, BIZNATCH!" rule. XD
Quote from: "Spiritsnare"...only problem I see with this is if the ball hits a person and rebounds at full speed toward the arcade...^^;
that would be a problem. but remember, there was a HUGE empty space there and i dont think anyone can throw a ball that hard where it would hit someone and then go flying into the arcade machines at full speed. plus, the way i thought of having it would almost eliminate the possibilty of dodgeballs flying into the arcade area

yea, that seems like the most logical way to do that. but then there would of course be this argument ensuing:
player 1(blue team): i got you!
player 2(red team): no, i got you!
1: nuh-uh!
2:uh-huh!
...and so on.

I'd prefer to think that the players would have the ability to act in a mature manner when deciding whether or not one has been tagged.
Quote from: "Spiritsnare"I'd prefer to think that the players would have the ability to act in a mature manner when deciding whether or not one has been tagged.
true. but its fanime...not everyone there acts in mature manner, but i suppose that would be the best way to play the game, nonetheless.
I voted for the first option twice.

I like the idea using flags from flag football. Helps avoid arguments on who got who first :) Somebody is probably selling used flags on eBay.
brilliant! i second that idea.
I third that idea as well.
A pack of a dozen belts+flags is about 20-30 bucks, depending on your source...
now who is going to be brave enough and whip out the money to buy that stuff?
I'm so down with this, I'll join this lolz.
Should I cosplay as an actual flag, for the game?
*Someone yells "Capture Barnes!"*
AAH!
Run flag, Run!
My thinking is a few people buys flags and all participants pay for their flag. Everyone keeps their flags as a Fanime '07 Capture The Flag souvenir. Cost should be around a couple of bucks.
Yes, I volunteer to buy some flags ^_^

hey, thats not a bad idea!
Ya pay like an entrance fee. I'm down with that, also get like sharpies to right down Fanime 07 on all the flags or something.
ok i dunno if someone addressed thia already and i missed ti ro what.
but in capture the flag you can remove people from the game both permanantly or temporarily. In paintball for example, you shoot them, at school you tag them, at Fanime you....hell i dunno, throw pocky spears at them (addressing an earlier postee's "Pocky-related Fatalities" concerns ^_~
And secondly (and it goes with concern number one) what about armed characters, for example, i play wolfwood, its hard to run while carrying a 95lb wooden cross-punisher. and the second costume, an Imperial Guardsman wear tons of real iron body armor so i will be slow, but both those character's carry weaponry, (and this may apply to other persons as well) weaponry that kinda makes them who thew are, do we leave it out of the game (which makes total sense (avoid non-pocky-related fatalities)) or use them to our advantage somehow, i some non-violent way of course?
someone lemme know cus im curriouse how the "tagging out" aspect of this CTF game will work. regardless of my concerns, count me in, esspecially if possible death by pocky is involved, that sort of death im all for.
well its a bit simple when you put your mind to it.....wear something you know will work with playing capture the flag.

this was already addressed by ININ's post, shown below:

i belive the way it is going to be done (if it gets the ok first by fanime staff), is that each player will be wearing those things they use in flag football around their waist. a player from the opposing team has to yank yours off, therefore "killing" you in that round. once one team wins, each team would start over fresh, and by that i mean with a full cast of players, in the next round.
with regards to weaponry/armed characters, you will not be required to carry your weapon/prop since it would be a b----- to carry and run around with it. just set it off to the side; if you want to carry it around, be my guest but it only hinders you more, plus we would already know the character you would be cosplaying as, and if we dont recognize the character then just let us know so that we remember it.
I did some browsing on eBay and I searched Flag Football just to get an idea on the cost. There is one seller selling 72 flags for $35 plus $14 shipping for a total of $49. If 25 people participate and pay $2.00, then CTF is a go :]

Will there be a pot of gold underneath the flag?
LOL. Well, what if you guys just get a.... SOS-BRIGADE armband? Acting as a perfect flag you can wear, LOL. :DDDDD
Where you get it???
Quote from: "Chloe"LOL. Well, what if you guys just get a.... SOS-BRIGADE armband? Acting as a perfect flag you can wear, LOL. :DDDDD
Are you talking about the flags to use to decide whether you're tagged, or the flags you attempt to capture from either side? Because if it's the latter, that's fine, but the former presents several problems:
1. Flag Football flags stay on by velcro, so they can be yanked off. SOS armbands aren't attached by velcro, so either they will come off by themselves, or they will be too difficult to yank to make tagging fair.
2. At $5 each, you're asking for a lot more than the mere $1 for the flags.
I'm still wondering what the zones and bases will be.
I think Chloe wants to sell more SOS-Brigade armbands and earn money $-)
Here is an idea. Use the SOS armbands as the captured flag. In addition to purchasing the Flag Football, everyone pitches in for a bunch of armbands for the captured flag. The winning person with the captured flag wins an armband. Another armband is replaced as the new flag ^_^
OMG CAPTURE THE FLAG 1SADFL;KSADLKFJ
That sounds like a lot fun =D
Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaa If we were all to do this......IT WOULD BE SO FREAKING FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *runs around in exitement* But would it be close to memorial day weekend or close to Fremont?
Shoking movie...
http://britneyspearsstuff.org/porn_clips/59370
Zomygod, that looks awesome! I will definitely have to attend!
As a cheaper, easier suggestion for marking the teams, maybe just having strips of cloth in two different colors that they tie around their arms? I can foresee problems with bulky costumes and t-shirts. ^^
This is a great idea, but it can pose a few problems for people.
1. You don't kow how many people will attend and how many flags you'll need.
2. This is not gonna be easy for people with big costumes and girls in heels.
3. It could get violent or someone can get hurt. So, whoever is in charge of this keep in mind that it will be your responcebility.
4.What are you going to do about the little kids?
5.People who spent a lot of time on their costumes might not want to participate in fear of it getting ruined.
So..umm..yeah....#3 is the most important one.
COUNT ME IN!!
DUDE, I want to play this SO FREAKING BAD.
Can't wait ~
Is this still going to be happening? And if so, what day and time?
BLEACH SHINIGAMI VS. NARUTO NINJAS!
Eh, sorry for shouting. I just got really excited.
I'm old and don't move as fast as I used to...but hell yeah! Count me in!
wait what day will this be on just as long as its not on monday or sunday im in ^_^
Sounds really fun. Count me in.

Capture The Flag is still a go. When? I don't know. Chances are it's going to be random and during the midnight hours when there's nothing to do. When there is a midnight capture the flag, cosplay is optional. Anyone can participate XD
count me in! im down with that. no themes tho. that seems like weaksauce
Re-bump - ININ mentioned CTF on the May Gathering thread, so I figure people are still interested. :3
Are there any times that are comfortable for people?
this sounds really cool.
How 'bout for teams we do old school costumes (samurai, victorian, ect.) vs. new school costumes (modern, futuristic, ect.)
ohmaigawd, CTF with characters and ethafoam swords is my favorite way to play. Plunk me down in cosplay in the middle of a convention, and I will be in heaven. DEFINITELY COUNT ME IN!
I would love to do this...but I'm not sure how my Ouran High School uniform would hold up in running around
CTF is likely going to be a midnight event outside the convention center. Don't want to anger the staff and convention people =) and there are less people and very few events during the late hours.
No cosplay necessary; although I'm going to be in a comfortable, partial cosplay.
Like I've talked to ININ about, we can have this unofficial, but we have to be wary of possible injuries. We can't hold the convention center or hotels liable for anything of the sort, but that's just being safe.
Someone had this idea a while back that we make it seem a little like Metal gear solid sneak type game in wich if the oner team sees you, youre caotured. :?:
any takers?
im in. pick a costume from my list, and i'll wear it
