Title: Mail out the Program Guides
Post by: heeroyuy135 on May 29, 2007, 12:58:22 PM
I know that would mean more work, but it would make up for the fact the Program Guides weren't available at Fanime this year. The digital version is nice, but I want to have the physical version.

No way. lol.

I'm not staff, but they couldn't mail out the POSTCARDS because of financial reasons. They definitely don't have the financial capabilities to physically mail the program guides to everyone or anyone who would be interested in the guide.

Unfortunately, there was no program guide and that's just the way it is. Fanime has to start working on next year's convention now. Let's hope the printer works next time.

Yeah, true...

But it would be nice.

Last night, after tearing down the convention, we decided it was time to eat a real meal for the first time in the week. The Arctic Rescue GO! team sprinted from the Hilton to Johhny Rockets and we took up three booths.

Amidst the ordering and me taking scandalous pictures, the chair received a phone call from the 2nd of Publications. His jaw dropped, and he waved for the finances, the director of fan services, and the president of ARG to come by. He had an announcement to make.

"You are not going to believe this. I'm only going to say it once, so listen up."

The room fell to silence.

"They just drove up to their house and... the driveway was blocked because it was full of boxes from the printing company."

Everyone's jaw dropped.

Yes, some of the program guides had been printed, but they were sent to the wrong address and had been sitting in a staffer's driveway the entire weekend. No one bothered to call us to say that they had been printed or delivered at all. They simply appeared out of thin air in the wrong place days after we needed them.

So.

After stealing a few to give to the remaining Guests of Honor and Other Important People, we started toying with ideas.

Believe it or not, we are seriously thinking about mailing these out to you guys. I'm not guaranteeing anything, but we generally think you guys deserve it. Besides, the thing is really cool and we put a lot of hard work into it, so we want to put it out there anyway.

ROFLMAO!

I voted yeah, definitely send it out. You can help spread it through other people as well - for every con-goer you know, they probably know ten more.

Oh jeez. That figures.

I wonder how much it'd cost to mail, per guide. If it's less than a dollar, then big whoop if you tack that much onto next year's reg fees.

... speaking of postcards, here's an idea.

What if you sent one out to every registered guest who re-registers for next year ALONG WITH the "postcards" for next year?! I mean, sure, it's a long wait, but it'll give people something to do during pre-con anticipation. As long as you're sending program guides, an extra page is nothing.

I want one, and I want one bad. I would have rather had one at the con, but I AT THE LEAST want one now. I always heavily rely on mine to determine what I do at the convention, and then also use it as my main souvenir to remind me of it all.

I feel like my meal didn't come with fries or something.

I would actually want to have a copy, too. [As well as an already printed out schedule for a little memory thing, I should have swiped one when I was working....]

How about at the website, just have a little box next to the online guide with the button to add in their address if they want the 2007 mailed to their house?

A quite a number of people who came by to register looked disappointed at the little grab bags when we gave it to them. "Where are the little program guide thingies?" they would ask.
We would respond "we don't have them" and they would look all sad and go upstairs. T_T

On Monday night at 10pm, about ten of us were huddled together around a box in the Hilton lobby reading the program guides and crying. They were easily the best program guides Fanime has ever had. It would've been almost better if the program guides just didn't show up at all because it was painful that they were so close yet so far...

Really, if you haven't checked out the digital copy on fanime.com, please do. You'll be impressed.

In all seriousnessity (ha! I can make up my own word!), we are considering mailing the Program Guides out. No guarantees, but we are going to look at costs and such.

Put 'em in the bag for next year!
When registering for 2008, have a check box for people to check if they attended 2007, and if they did, put a 2007 program in their bag. Or something.... Just an idea. I would love to get a copy of the guide myself.

You should have seen my face when I found out. I literally had to sit quietly while everyone discussed the issue and concentrate on not crying in front of the other heads. Crying would not solve the issue and only delay the discussion of what to do. After all of this is over I'm going to have a nice cry and then kick some ass at the printers.

It's only a little less cool if it happened to be your house.  Imagine that you had a rather stressful con after scrambling to make up for the lack of program guides, and you get home only to find 30 heavy boxes of these very program guides blocking your way into your garage.  Now, you have to move these boxes back to the office (which is back near the con that you just left) before you can pull into your garage (because, well, you live in a tiny house and there's no way you have space for them at home, and your CCRs don't allow you to park in your driveway).  ;_;

Actually, I only lifted two of the boxes myself.  I do love my boyfriend, though, and I feel bad about abusing him that way.  ^_^;

Oh, yeah, and it's not cool to have to question why I didn't just cave in and go home even once during the con.  I wanted my bed, my little soft blankie, my water softener, my food, (my brand new, freshly-shipped Wii!) and lots of other things at home.  There were so many reasons why I wanted to go home, and I thought it'd be bad, negligent, weak, or childish of me to do so -- until I finally got home and saw the program guides there.  ;_;

And, thank goodness it didn't rain between the time the boxes were dropped off and the time I got home.

I have very mixed reactions about the program guide showing up.  I mean, it's way beyond cool that I got the very first copy in the very first box.  ^_^  However, it presents many problems that it's late and probably consists of only 3000 of the 10,000 copies.  On one hand, I'm grateful that it wasn't 10,000 copies because it would've taken me more than three times the number of trips to get them all to the office.  If the program guides were never printed, then it's easy to just give up on them and just write it off.  At 3000, though, there's definitely not enough right now for everybody, and there are a lot of hard questions.  How does Fanime pay to mail them out?  How does Fanime determine who gets one and who doesn't?  Should Fanime ask the print shop for the other 7000 copies, just to be fair to all the attendees?  Is that really fair?  Considering Fanime is asking for a refund, will the print shop be willing to finish the job for free?  Is it worth the lawyer fees to make them do it if they're not?

Yes, the people active on the forum are going to want the program guides.  The people here are the ones who will care.  But, how many of the people who aren't on the forum will appreciate the program guide coming after the con?

Yeah... That whole deal with the Program Guide was such a disappointment especially when I had 2 new Con members to show around.  It would have been handy to give them a better idea about the con and how to get around and what not.  It's nice that they put up a digital copy... It looked pretty and all, but yeah, as you guys stated before, it's better to have it physically.

I was also surprised too sice they didn't send out the post cards 'cause it kinda reminds me to get excited about the con. LOL.  Well ,hopefully next year things will be better prepared and my 2 friends can really see what there is to see at Fanime.

Jonathan Osborne, my hubby Jehuty and a friend of mine were playing cards together LATE on Monday night when a reg staffer came up and said, "Hey look, Fanime people!" and proceeded to hand us all several program guides.

I have two extra that I'll either give up for free or sell on eBay. xD They did an EXCELLENT job on the programs too.

I'm in agreement with the others who have said they would enjoy having a copy. D: I'd pay for it along with shipping, as I keep the guides from the years I've been to Fanime, and whenever I see them I end up sitting down and looking through them, regardless of what I was just doing.

I had a look-see at one.

ININ brought it over to a hangout the Friday after the No-Name showing, and apparently No-Name was passing out program guides - but one per person.

Looking at the guide, I became a bit irked that No-Name was limiting the release of the program guides - once again, for every con-goer there is, he probably knows a few more, who probably know a few more...

Please remember that we ("FanimeCon") are looking into our options to see what we can do. In the end, we will do what's best for FanimeCon and its members. It is true that we received some boxes (total was about 1,000 program guides) which is nowhere near what we ordered. We are currently in talks with our print company in order to see what we can do. Unfortunately, I can't say anymore about this until the situation is resolved.

So if you're hearing news from a source other than myself, Craige, or Will, consider it a rumor until confirmed.

Just to state the obvious, No-Name Anime doesn't have any supply of or control over the program guides. Tenba was at the No-Name meeting with a box of program guides, controlled how they were given out  and did require people to sign.  I hope there are no hard feelings that some people got programs at this meeting. I'm sure the Fanime staff is working hard to see what they can do for everyone.

PS. For everyone who's in the San Jose/Santa Clara area on the 2nd Saturday of the month, please come and join us.  We can't promise that you'll get something cool or learn something useful or make a friend or ... but you never know. http://www.nnanime.com
