Hey! Anyone interested in helping to organize a Human Chess game?
I'm in the process of making the giant chessboard, but I'll need 32 different cosplayers to take the parts of the pieces, and at least one pair of experienced players that want to play the actual game, on a smaller board.

I'll update more when I get more organized, or when more people show interest.

Hooha!

EDIT: List removed. Be patient, folks, it'll be back. Promise.

Yay!
I'll probably need to get this ok'd with the Fanime staff (especially if we have to have it indoors - the sun and all that), but I'm pretty sure I can pull this off. Just need... oh, 30 more people.

Around two months before Fanime, if people are still interested, I will start compiling a list of who wants to be chess pieces (and which pieces, at that), and people who would want to be the players.

I think it would be awesome if we could set the board up on the Civic Center floor and have players on the opposite sides of the Mezzanine.

Haha... it would be awesome, but I think the best we can hope for is maybe the area on either side of the fountains, or a section of hallway on the first floor of the convention center. Even that might be too much.

The yaoi game could be after the normal one? I dunno. Still have so much time to plan.

And dammit, my board prototype is dead. My brother spilled stuff on it. Already.

I personally don't like glomping, but if people want to do that, yus, we shall.

The ones who don't like glomping, could maybe be in character. Like, ifi there's a Gaara: "Desert Coffin!"

Any cosplay from any series. Granted, this started out as a Naruto chess thing, but it seems not enough Naruto cosplayers are interested in putting forth the effort to stand on a chessboard. So now it's a free for all.

If we don't have a smaller chessboard, the main entrance might work. the players could stand up on the balcony, or something. Maybe one of the hallways to the side? Of course, we might get into trouble for obstructing traffic. =3

And therein lies the problem. I can only stay till about 10, 11 latest each night. If only I weren't a teenager.

EDIT: One of my friends just brought up an interesting situation. If there are more than two games played, the cosplayers who want to be pieces but couldn't could maybe switch with cosplayers who don't want to be pieces anymore. That way, more people are able to be on the board.

Hey there. I would totally love to be a peice. Specially if I could be a rook or a knight or something.

Rather than using paper why don't you just use masking tape and for the black squares add diagnal lines inside. Also, The room that the dance was held in I think was empty during the day, though I could be wrong. You should see if you could do it in there.

I think it'd be easier to just make the board out of paper: no messy tape cleanup, easier to transport, quicker to put together, and I can put more detailed stuff on each of the squares.
Do you think we could ... commandeer that room for a couple hours? I'll see if we can get into there.

Kinkos' oversize black and white printer can print three feet by anything wide, depending on the limitations of the roll, at fifty cents a square foot (less for me). You'd need 24 foot long rolls, eight of them, at three feet wide, so it would be approximately 237 dollars (before 30 percent discount) to make the whole board from printer. ^^'

....
Good lord. I'll just stick to hand-taping and marker-ing, I think.

Thanks for the info, though! It makes me feel all fuzzy that there are people that genuinely like the idea. I don't feel quite so stupid anymore.

Yay!

And Jyunishinsho, it doesn't matter really what cosplay you decide to wear. Just so long as you can fit all of it onto the squares (which are either going to be 2ft square or 3ft square). I would adore the more... 'shonen'-y characters, but I'm not going to put restrictions on the types of costumes.

Okay. So. Contrary to what I said earlier, I shall begin compiling the list of characters/cosplayers and the pieces. One of my friends (who has agreed, after much whining, to help me put this together) has claimed one of the queen spots. So yes. I'll have the basic list put up in a jiffy.

The people who are the Kings and Queens would have to be tall, taller than everyone else.
And we could have Naruto cosplayers on one side, and other cosplayers on the other side.
I'd personally like to be a bishop. :D

That wouldn't be fair to many cosplayers, as not everyone is tall. Asians especially are rather short (spoken from experience - there are 13 year olds taller than me!), and it'd seem racist if only tall people could be kings and queens.

If we have enough Naruto cosplayers, sure, we could have them on one side of the board. I rather doubt we will have enough, though.

Let's see...

* For the board, see if white or black squares on concrete, grass, carpet, or other solid color surface will do. Tape the corners of the squares together. On grass, nail in white squares. If you're using white squares, you can save $ by using rectangular squares, aka. sheets of paper. The best surface is office carpet with masking tape; you should be able to get away with ignoring the color of the squares.

* As for rank, cut out "headbands" or create paper hats with the rank symbol cut out. You can also have PVP pipe poles with the rank symbol at the ends; each person holds their pole upright.

* Use megaphone to announce chess moves, so that the cosplayers know where to move. And make sure the cosplays know how to move, lol. You may want a moderator to help make sure the cosplayers moved correctly. You may also want to bring along chess sets so the chess players know where the pieces are.

* Just for aesthetics sake, have the cosplay match the rank. People cosplaying duplicates can go in the back rank.

You are very cool. =D
The rankings will most likely be denoted with signs that people can wave around, like picket signs. That'd be so much easier than PVC, not to mention cheaper.

The chessboard itself will be posterboards (that are free, much to my delight) taped together. The board will most likely come in seperate folding pieces, for easy transportation and storage.

A megaphone would be nice - though, I'd need someone to donate that. I don't have one of my own. I was also planning on having a more normal sized chessboard be brought along, so the players have a better view of their playing field. Also, as I know many people (myself included) do not know the technical names of the spaces on the board, I think we'll have to dumb down the moves - like, knight Sakura, go up three and one to the left.

A wide variety of cosplays would be nice. I think that there will be only one cosplayer of any character on the board at a time. I'll have to think about variations in costume (like Cardcaptor Sakura's many outfits), but those might be acceptable.

Umm. Yes. On that note, when you sign up for a position, kindly include what you think you'll be cosplaying on that day. Thank you.

We need a megaphone, yes. That is most required.

I will be cosplaying as Dosu Kinuta(Naruto) on that day, and as i said earlier, ill be a bishop if i can. Ill see if i can get better speakers than i had this year, so i can play music for everyone. The ones i have now aren't very good. They dont project. :(

How about a chess tournament on Friday, and then the Cosplay Chess on Saturday?  That way you can have the top two players from the tournament be the ones to dictate the movements of the human pieces, making it a championship game.

And you'll totally have enough Naruto costplayers.  Have you seen the pictures from the Naruto gathering??

There are a few problems with the tournament + championship games:
How will we find the space for a tournament? Are there enough people willing to actually play chess? Anime fans tend to come to conventions for the anime - and a lot don't know how to play chess.
I also will most likely be attending only Saturday and Sunday - It's not until 2007 that I'll be able to spend a whole four days at Fanime. Being a highschooler sucks.

And for the Naruto cosplayers: They don't seem very interested. I ran this by them once, because I'd initially intended to have only Naruto cosplayers be pieces, but they kinda shot me down. So I opened the idea to all cosplays.

Ah, I was wondering when this would come up.

I think that the cosplay part is a good idea, but not glomp chess.  At least not together.  The problem with the glomp is that, inevitably, somebody caught up in the moment will take it from glomp to flying tackle chess.  Yes, that is indeed... bad.  Other than the injury risks, the glomping might do some damage to people's cosplays.

Other than that, I think it's a great idea!

So we probably won't have glomps. I don't want to risk killing the chessboard anyway.

I'm not much of a cosplay person, since I'm horribly lazy, but if I was, I'd love to be part of this.  As is, I hope you manage to get a full crew of people, 'cause I'd definately go watch, and I could videotape it and put it online (if someone would host the file/torrent) for those who participate.  :D  Good luck~

You could still play the actual game, if you wanna. It'd be awesome to get a videorecording - maybe I'll bring a camcorder or something, too.

And it would be so totally cool and awesome and other teenybopper phrases if you made the signs. I was just going to have picketsigns and stuff, but actual signs would be ... what was that 90's phrase.. 'da bomb'.

As for the outside gathering in Santana Row - that might be difficult. I can't go anywhere outside of school functions, so, eh... But if the other people want to, I don't see why not. I'd just need confirmation of winners and things like that.

Hmm. This will be at Fanime, right? Contact [email protected] and pitch the idea. This year, we had plenty of space, and a chess tournament sounds fine. (Hey, if we can run two YGO tournaments...) My concern is that if you don't have two good similarly matched chess players, you're going to spend an hour setting up and another hour watching someone obviously lose.

Not familiar with chess tournaments and swiss format, but that won't keep me from posting a suggestion -- that may also encourage non-cosplaying chess players to participate:
* Swiss format: After each round, each player plays against another player who has won the same amount of games.
* After the tournament, each player receives their scorecard (ie. number of wins). The top two players are invited for the cosplay chess. If one or both decline, use the scorecards to pair off the two highest-scoring players, etc. etc.

Myself, I have two miniature chessboards I can bring. After the tournament, I can run SJG games of their chess games -- with prizes. Heck, I even have Tile Chess, a multiplayer chess game, so you can select the top two players after only one game...

EDIT: Found the rules in .pdf format. One game of Tile Chess should be a quick way to find two good chess players and could be pulled off the same day as the cosplay chess...

Oh my word. A tournament would be nice, but I don't think a lot of people would have the patience or skill to keep up. I know I wouldn't.  *sweatdrop*

But really. If we get enough people, I would be willing to arrange a tournament. If we only have 4 or 5 people who will actually be playing, though, I don't think it'd be worth the effort.

*scratches head* How did it go from one game to a tournament?  =O

I'd definitley like to take part in this game next year. I could both play a game and be a piece (not at the same time of course :P ). I might go as Kenshin again, but it's still a year away so I might do something different.

If we get the tournament on the roster for things that are happening at Fanime, and say that there is a prize for the winner, then Im sure well get ppl to come and play.
We just need to get on the list(watever its called).

I was actually thinking of labelling each square with the corresponding notation. There are a lot of people who don't know the notation (myself included...), and even a pre-game tutorial session wouldn't be enough to really impress the information on the players.

I think I was around for the initial mention of this in one of the insane AIM chats... but..

I live too far away to be much assistance in any pre-con tournaments or anything... but I'm willing to help out at the con.

*jumps around and waves*

I'd love to be a piece (White Queen, perhaps?), or someone who helps to run it. I'm terrible at actually playing the game, though I know the rules, I just... don't have the strategy... however, I wouldn't object to being moved around.

I'll be cosplaying next year: Meg from Burst Angel, and possibly a few others.

My AIM is Aelia314

Oh, and one other thing, assuming we get this cleared, I'd be willing to make the props and such that we could give to/put on the players so that you can tell which team, and what piece they are... I'm not really sure who's 'in charge' at this point... but yeah. ^__^

*was going to keep editing her post with every new idea, but decided to add a new post so things were easier*

I already said stuff right up there. *points UP*

But, alright,

Comments:
- We can't really do Yaoi-Chess unless people get carded... however we can do regular chess... perhaps with glompage, in a public place. The room where they held the dance this year was unoccupied during the day, and *plenty* large for a huge chessboard. {With Staff Approval, we could maybe get ahold of one of the live-programming rooms... depending.}
- The size of the squares we need will vary depending on how pieces get captured. (2'x2' would be fine for normal capture, while 3'x3' would be more reasonable for glompage)
- We'd need a player for each piece, plus at least 5 alternates, in case someone doesn't want to, chickens out, can't make it, or gets tired of playing.
- We need something to denote which team people are on. (Perhaps armbands of black & white for pawns, and armbands and some prop for the bigger pieces, a sword for the knights, a drapery thingie for the bishops, Collars for the Rooks, and Crowns for the King and Queen.)
- We would need some sort of prize for the winner... perhaps a day with the piece of their choice? It would have to be something simple, PG, and fun.

Geez this is long. -__-;

- We could maybe convert Chess into Checkers later in the day, as people got tired, or we wanted things to move faster.
- Captured pieces should have something entertaining to do in the meantime, I'm not really sure what.
- To make things more interesting, perhaps challenge squares, where people have to 'battle', through a challenge, and the winner gets to stay, and the loser goes to the loser pit.

IF we set up a game of Yaoi-Chess, where, for legal reasons, we really *would* have to card people, we could run things a bit differently.

- Bishies would be on one team, unless we have enough players to make two teams of bishies; Fangirls/boys would be on the other. (Players would be decided by a raffle? Or something vaguely random..)
- Every time a piece got captured, they'd have to take of an article of clothing. ('course, we couldn't go past undies, but ohwell, we can't have everything)
- The winning player would get to chose any piece of their choice and make them take off an extra piece.
- To stir things up, and make things fun, the squares each have numbers, well, we'd have a spinner with the different letters and numbers on it, and if anyone was on that square when someone spun, they'd have to either a) complete a challenge, or b) remove more clothes.

rotfl -- Cosplay checkers sounds hilarious. A king would be a cosplayer piggy-backing on top of another. Yes, if you're a small cosplayer and get to the back row, you can be the top checker piece.

For chess, I'd imagine simply facing towards the opponent's side would help. Each chess player should have an actual board with pieces. Even when wearing identifiers, I'd bet cosplayers look so different that you can't match the outfit well with the piece's rank.

Glomp chess may be an out â€" fragile costumes and all. I do think we can at least try to get a hold of the dance room, if the scheduling is the same next year.
I think likkyan volunteered to make the signs for the pieces â€" no confirmation yet, though. But if you want to, just in case, that’d be totally cool. =3
The prize thingy is cool, too. Just have to be careful what people want to do (*flinch*) with their piece of choice. Maybe we can give imitation Pocky (I know where to buy it cheap) or a small cash prize. Or an “Otaku Lunch Spread” â€" Pocky, Ramune, a random sandwich, or some other foodstuffs.
And for the cosplay checkers, I have one word â€" LEAPFROG! For the captured pieces, maybe they can engage in a rousing game of paper-scissors-rock! Or something. Can’t have them just standing around the whole time.

Say! Remember Battle Chess? BC pretty much had "action scenes" when one piece took out another. The Queen was a sorceress, and the Rook became a rock monster. Anyway, instead of glomping, whenever a piece takes out another, the capturer and captured make an action pose and a pic is taken.

I can make Onigiri, though it tastes nasty if you don't make it fresh... soo.. maybe, depending on the food vendors next year, we have someone running it buy them lunch or something. - and as far as the 'day with a piece' thing... they'd ultimately have the right to say no, provided they had good cause. And we'd have some ground rules: -no taking them back to your room, they get to initiate anything beyond a hug... (which means you can't kiss them unless htey're okay with it) things like that.

Title: Cosplay Chess!
Post by: Zagato on June 09, 2005, 05:43:57 PM
From a friend, 'Goturouge'

If anyone here plays chess to any lengths they'll know all about algebraic notation. Not in math, but chess. I'll explain in case some of you have no idea what I'm typing about.

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.zoovy.com%2Fimg%2Fthechessstore%2FBffffff%2Fnotation.jpg&hash=7ad4601fed31089ce446f778634795348f63458d)
All right, obviously that's a chess board. Notice the letters and numbers surrounding it--that's where the notation comes from. If white, for their first move, were to push the king pawn two squares, if would look something like this:

1.) e4

Black would then make his move. Let's say he decides to draw his knight to threaten that pawn.

1.) . . .  Nf6

(Note: The ellipsis shows that that move follows whites 1.) move.)

Do you kind of get how it works now? I'll explain further.

All the pieces, except the pawns, have a capital letter to represent themselves before the letter-number indicating where they have moved. I'll give an example indicating where white's pieces are (exempting pawns) before anything has been moved at all (their initial positions).

Rooks - Ra1, Rh1
Knights - Nb1, Ng1
Bishops - Bc1, Bf1
Queen - Qd1
King - Ke1

With pawns you don't need to put any capital letter before them, simply type the square you've moved them to.

When a piece is attacking another piece (please, please, please, understand what that means), a lower case 'x' is used. Nxd6, Qxf2, Bxa8, etc.

I'm assuming everyone understands how this works, regardless of how much it seems I'm rambling.

There's one more little bit I want to explain, then I'll get on to the real meaning of this post. Let's say have your knights on d4 and f4 and you want to indicate moving one of them to e6. Well, they can both move to e6, how do we knock which one is being moved? Simple, if you're moving the d4 knight the notation looks something like this:

Nd-e6 (or, if attacking, Ndxe6)

And if it were the f4 pawn it looks like this:

Nf-e6 (or, if attacking, Nfxe6)

It will work the same for pawns, but only if two pawns are able to attack the same square.

Understand? I hope I haven't over complicated this, or over looked how complicated it actually is. If there are any questions just let me know.

This should explain it, questions can be asked to me and I will answer as best I can.

ALSO, for anyone who cares-we can play chess via notation on the boards or through PM, which would both help in learning the notation and help in skill of Chess ;)

-Zaggy

I was thinking of putting the notation on the board when I made it. Didn't know if it was a good idea, but I think I will.

Pwaha. I knew the notations! I'm so remember-iffic. I just need to learn the notation for attacking/capturing/etc. Yus.

And dude... 17+? Then I can so do that. Yay. Turning old has its benefits.
For glomping/non-glomping: Maybe we could have signs on the people who would allow glomping, and let that happen.

The Twister idea is good. Provide side entertainment. =3 Maybe hopskotch, just to be nostalgic.

ced1106: Battle Chess would be coooool. Especially if it were two characters that would never, EVER meet up (i.e., Kagome [InuYasha] and TenTen [Naruto]). That's a really great idea.  :D

Yes, multiple pieces can do the same thing, but if u play or watch people play, then u see that the same kind of piece rarely can do the same thing that another can, but since it will be cosplay, then we can say the name of the cosplayer, their real name, or the name of the one who they are cosplaying as.

Yeah, well, the advantage of this is that they can say "Hey, you, in the mini skirt, move to the square with the guy in the maid-outfit!"

^__^

We'd have to clear anything like Yaoi-Chess with the staff though... because, well, they're going to be involved somehow.

The other thing we could do is, we could duct-tape the squares onto the floor...  and the ones with X's on them are black, and the one with no X's are white, or something like that... though a board that's re-usable would be good... but at the same time, it's gotta be able to handle people walking on it, which rules-out paper. Someone could sink a lot of money & time into making a huge fabric chessboard... or something... >.>

We could always just make the board out of wood. We could make 64 wooden squares, and then paint them, and duct tape them together for the game, then untape them, and reuse them next year.

This is a really cool idea and I wouldn't mind having the Tabletop gaming dept sponsor the event- just wanna pitch in my two cents on the matter:

+ The battle chess concept is really cool. We see a bunch of characters in some neat poses and it makes for fantastic pictures.

- Glomping just leads to grief, especially with costumes. Now that it's considered a flying tackle hug, there's a chance with complex outfits in play, people can be hurt or equipment damaged just by being near the glomped piece. Who really wants to Glomp the Sandrock gundam when we can have Sana-Chan whack it with a Pico Pico hammer?

+ Using Santana Row's gonzo sized chess board is an awesome idea, just as long as we get permission from the place in advance. There may be some slight advantages for the cosplay pieces and random non-fanime people would really enjoy the costumed folk assembled. (right next to the chess board is a place called Blowfish, which serves sushi while piping anime over tv sets during work hours)

- While the ladies (and some of the men) may enjoy Yaoi, lets be quite honest here without going to slam or defend someone's fetish: It's very slim niche and while it may not have tentacle monsters that are featured in some straight hentai, it is still hentai as most of the people who go to those events would love to see the characters hop in the sack. Yes, I know the difference between Yaoi and Shonen AI- one is explicit and the other hints at it, how loud is up to the program but it simply hints. It would certainly be a no-no to do that at Santana Row (or any public place), and even if it was held at the show, it would just exclude too many people from visiting something that could be enjoyed by all without feeling uncomfortable.

Anywho, if those who'd like to head up this event for Fanime, feel free to give me a holler at [email protected] and we'll go from there.
Title: Cosplay Chess!
Post by: likkyan on June 09, 2005, 09:56:12 PM
Oh good... I wasn't just imagining the Santana Row chessboard X3  Not sure if that would work out as far as transportation... but yeah, it would save quite a bit of work as far as making a board, and it could house the tournament as well.  So... well, I'll leave that for other people to debate the pros and cons of.

Although I for one would NOT mind lunch at Blowfish Sushi before/afterwards... they're pretty good.  :D

As far as notation goes, if it comes down to it, I'm sure we'd have enough idle "watchers" who aren't actively participating that would be willing to hold up signs and stand around the board.  Then the cosplayers could just look at the signs and move to the right square.  That might get a bit crowded or disrupt the aesthetics of the scene... but it's something to consider.  Plus, it would give the watchers something to do instead of just milling around awkwardly.  :3

The Yaoi chess seems to be a bit too... overkill.  I agree that it's definately not something that would cater to all the participants, and while I would love to see it done... perhaps that's something Y-con attendees (I know there's at least a few of you in this thread...) should think about organizing at Y-con?  I'm sure if someone mentioned it to the Yaoicon staff, or requested it as a panel or something, that it would go over well.  And you wouldn't have the problems with carding, since obviously, you've got to be 18+ to register for the convention!  :)  There may or may not be enough time for it... but if someone wants to set up a modified version of this for  this year's Y-con and gets it approved, I'd be more than willing to help out.  I'm registered, but I doubt I would have the time to organize everything since I'm starting summer school in like, two weeks.  I'm sure I could whip up the signs designating the pieces by the time Y-con rolls around, though.  I just need some advance warning.  ^_^

Checkers sounds awesome and hilarious as well, but it would be another restriction on costumes--nothing that protrudes or is overly large, i.e. wings, elaborate hats, stiff costumes that don't let you crouch down...

I think the action shot for captured pieces sounds really neat, I'm all for that, and I can bring my photo printer (little portable one) and each player who "dies" can have a copy of the image.  I would do the "killers" as well, but that would take up way too much ink...  Or maybe I should just do the "killers"?  :: shrugs ::  Or I could just charge a buck or two a photo for whoever wants them.  :3  It's kind of too expensive to do for free... :/

Maybe once they've "died" they get to do something embarrassing to the person who was controlling them, in exchange for having been killed/sacrificed?  Like... dropping an ice cube down thier shirt, or getting to 'haunt' them (whispering silly moves, tickling them, trying to make them lose concentration)?  Maybe nothing that drastic... but it'd be incentive for the actual players to not let any of thier pieces die if they had to endure something each time they lost a piece.  Maybe it would make the other person feel better about having their time on the board cut short, as well.  X3  Just an idea.

I like where this is heading...!

I don't think it would be too difficult to play a Yaoi board game. You just need a game that's less "ambitious" than live-action chess: fewer pieces and a smaller board.

3D tic-tac-toe might work. You play on either a 3x3x3 or 4x4x4 board. The lenght and width would be drawn on the board like traditional tic-tac-toe. As for the height (ie. which level the piece was on), you'd pose the actors differently:

* Bottom: Lying down
* 1st level: Kneeling
* 2nd level: Standing
* 3rd level: Standing with arms raised.

The amusing (read: yaoi fangirl fun bits) would be when you have more than one piece on the same square of the board (but different levels). Imagine four men (I'd prefer women) on the same square: one lying down, the other kneeling next to him, the other standing, and the last standing with his arms up.

Quote from: "likkyan"Oh good... I wasn't just imagining the Santana Row chessboard X3  Not sure if that would work out as far as transportation... but yeah, it would save quite a bit of work as far as making a board, and it could house the tournament as well.
Transportation should be easy enough. It's close for a quick carpool drive or barring that, a ride on the 23 VTA bus line. The 23 runs often enough where it won't be a problem as long as there's enough prep time.
Quote

Although I for one would NOT mind lunch at Blowfish Sushi before/afterwards... they're pretty good.  :D
I've never eaten there, but I'll keep that in mind...

Quote
As far as notation goes, if it comes down to it, I'm sure we'd have enough idle "watchers" who aren't actively participating that would be willing to hold up signs and stand around the board.  Then the cosplayers could just look at the signs and move to the right square.  That might get a bit crowded or disrupt the aesthetics of the scene... but it's something to consider.  Plus, it would give the watchers something to do instead of just milling around awkwardly.  :3
Each player could have laminated cards indicating what piece they are and a chart on the other side so they can navigate easily. It could help the actual players that there's a real chess game set up to represent the players.
Quote

Amen on that. There's a proper time and place for everything I suppose. I'm quite sure Y-con would just dig that sort of thing and everyone's happy. Want Yaoi? Go to the con with the dang word in it's name and there can be a clean fun game of chess that you wouldn't be embarassed to take your mother to
Quote

Same here- at the very least the photo taking could be used to see the most action packed post game chess report you'd ever see. Other conventions has done this kind of event, and I'd have to go for the concept where the role fits with the character being cosplayed- Wolfwood for Bishop, Priss for Knight, Vash for King, Regina or Mai for Queen, Meg for Rook, Various mook ninjas for pawns on one side and Catgirls/ School girls for the other side and so on...

Just one problem that was brought up by one of my gaming helpers: Unless this game has timed moves, it can go on for over an hour and even then pawns or other pieces might get stuck in one space for the whole duration of the event... it would also help to have some sort of commentator/host who knows Chess really well and is quite enthusastic about it so people aren't bored to tears watching someone get indecicive and think they're the next Bobby Fisher.

KindaRandomKris would you want to co-head this with me, maybe? I mean, since you started the thread, you're kinda the leader at this point...

Wirebrain, are you the head of Tabletop gaming, or just a staff-member involved?

Ummm anyhow...

I haven't got a clue where Santana Row is, but if we all went in a group, and had easy directions about how people could get there, it would be fine... a few comments, though.
- It will severely shrink our audience if we leave the Con. center for an event like that.
+ Nobody will have to make the chessboard.
+ Sushi sounds great, even if we don't do it there, somebody needs to give me directions.

Photos:
Sound great. $2/photo sounds alright, maybe $2/ea or 3/$5?

Battle Chess:
So we get a bunch of random weapons (battle royale style) and have someone with a bag, and you draw the name of the weapon out of the bag, and end up with that for the duration of the game. ^__^ Everything from a wooden spoon to a plushie guitar to an inflatable hammer... and people could whack each other anywhere that doesn't look fragile... or maybe, a game of rock-paper-scissors or something.

Losers:
Should definitely do something interesting on the sidelines, both for their own amusement, and the amusement of the audience. Ideas as far as that goes:
- Hopscotch
- Twister
- Tic-Tac-toe
- Spoons

Yaoi-Chess:
While it's a fun thought, I'd resigned myself a while back to the fact that it wasn't happening. There are just too many things to worry about. Besides, if we turn it into something like that, then it could make things weird. Y-Con has their events at Fanime, we don't need to add to the list. (no matter how fun that may be)

Announcer:
Sounds like a great idea. ^__^ They could get all into it, and make everything seem more dramatic. Do we have anyone that's got a flair for things like that? If not, we should find one. They can do it MXC style, perhaps.

E, I'm the not only a staff member of Tabletop, I'm also the high mucky muck of the dept. :)

You do bring up a good point with the fact it's not exactly in walking distance within the con. However I see this counterbalanced with

A) Many non-con goers checking out the event and said "pieces" and enjoying the show by itself. If it works, this could be one of those events that can "enrich" the comunity and perhaps help slay the idea that these cons are just weirdo havens and instead people who just like to have a good time.

B)  Easy transit- If cars are an issue, Transit runs directly from downtown to Valley Fair mall, which is right across from Santana Row.

C) As Great Teacher Largo put it: Knowledge is Power! We make the event known in either the program guide or the newsletter. Preferably both as well as directions to and from santana row and the SJCC.

The battle chess idea originally came from the age-old PC game of the same name. It was chess that would have cool combat animations when each piece captured another to spiff up the game- Frankly just telling the chess pieces to bring character appropriate weapons (paper fans, squeeky hammers and giant foam mallets for the catgirls/school kids for example) to the event is good enough. Expect alot of research on Boffo weapons, kids.

YAY! alright, so I'm high mistress until Kris returns...

Hmmm... what to do... what to do?

~_^

Naah, alright, so, I suppose the question is, where do we want to do all the planning for this?

Anyone with questions/comments as far as this is concerned, feel free to contact me via AIM, PM, or MSN. I'll respond to any of them, but be prepared to tell me who you are.

So, Tabletop gaming'd be willing to host it? Awesome. ^__^ I'm thinking... I'll be making more complete lists and such later. Any more suggestions from people?

Battle Chess: Yes, some more pondering

Well, I think that not everyone's  going to be able to get weapons that are costume-appropriate, and still useable. For example, Meg from Burst Angel (who I'm cosplaying) always has a very large gun. That's hardly appropriate for a game of chess, so I'll be finding something different just for the game.

I'll probably also bring a few spare pieces, for the spur-of-the-moment players.

Prizes:
We keep talking of a tournament, and every good tournament has prizes. I need someone to take charge of figuring out what we're going to do as far as prizes are concerned... Food, Anime Stuff, Random Strange Stuff... suggestions, anyone? (Plausible, and either cheap, or with an explanation about where to get the money for it)

Location:
We've pretty much decided. Objections, or alternate suggestions?

Maybe, for the cosplayers with managable weapons, they can use those, and the ones with huge/dangerous/fragile weapons can use toy ones? Fuun from the Naruto movie (which I think I'll wear instead of Gaara) has a katana (and I'll be using posterboard and wood to make that), which isn't too big a prop to deal with. A character like Yuna from FFX could probably get away with their weapon, too, but someone like Seras from Hellsing would have to use a toy weapon.

Wait, are we talking about Santana Row, here? Last year, when I went across the street for the Naruto gathering, my mother went ballistic on me. I shudder to think about what she'd do if I went to Santana Row - but, I'm sure that if we are going to Santana Row, I could convince her to let me go.

Well, Santana Row, while a safe and secure place, hasn't heard of this idea yet. Lets not count our chickens before they hatch. I'll visit them soon and see where to go from there.

Also I wouldn't worry about theme of the weapons displayed being appropriate for chess- have them more appropriate for the character much like the many themed battle chess software titles like star wars chess. (The only thing we should be concerned about is having the character appropriate for the role they're in- Since Meg uses what seems to be a snub nosed .38 in many episodes, you can wheel out a snubnosed .38 as you'll just do still battle poses in "combat") and seeing how it's not on convention center or hotel property and strictly on Santana Row property (if they give the thumbs up) the weapon policy may or may not be different for better or worse. Regardless- and we should make this ABSOLUTELY clear from the get-go: No matter how fake or real the weapon looks, never to draw or brandish a weapon at a spectator, use caution/courtesy and all weapons should be looked over before the game begins to assure safety.

All pieces and players could recieve some sort of participation prize, awards for best performance (as I'm sure many will be playing in character- be friendly though: I'm looking at you, genocidal maniac cosplayer.) and best costume and the winning side gets some sort of bonus.

How does that sound?

Spiritsnare... Roy Mustang as a Rook... I can see that. Nice :)

Hey guys, girls, and everything in between!
If you want Cosplay Chess to be finalized and become an official-official event at Fanime, go support it at the "CosPlay Event Ideas" thread!
Though, out of the choices available, I think it'd be the most supported (simply because of level of difficulty to run, time, etc.).

Yay!
And I don't really know what's been going on with planning, but I do hope this goes through. Though I doubt I'd have anything to do with running it - not staff, ya know.  :?  Who knows.

Maybe 3x3 would be better?  Taking into consideration the size of costumes some pieces would be wearing? (yeah, Shin's got a flowing gown and cape, come on!)  3' x 8 squares = 24', so we'd need an area maybe 24' square?

The fountain area would be large enough, and certainly draw a crowd, but timing might be a problem, if other groups are doing photo ops there the same day as the chess game.  I hope this makes it.  I'm looking forward to it!

If the board were to cost me money, I'd estimate it at about 190 dollars for 3x3, 1/2 that for 2x2, give or take. It may very well be free, though. Again, this is something relatively easy for me to order/make to the tune that I could literally prepare it for Fanime on a single day's notice.

But yeah. I'm still up for both building this board AND judging. We need to keep in mind the constraints of the fountain area, especially, as San Jose gets rather windy in late May.

Brilliant!  Bloody Brilliant!

I'm in if you can find a use for me, otherwise I'll just watch.

On a side note, the easiest way to make the board would probably be to use Duct tape.  Just make the grid and use the tape to cross-hatch the black squares.  Any flat surface will work then...

I can print oversize black and white thingies from a roll (Which comes in 24 or 36 inches wide and approximately 130 feet in length... so yeah. Plenty of roll), which would be both relatively inexpensive for 2X2 and pretty-looking for the fans. ^_^

Hello!  Just out of curiousity since I've been gone for a while... this is still going strong, is it not?  If we're going to do this, does anyone have preferences as to how the signs (the ones on big sticks for the cosplayers' benefit) should look?  If not, I'm going to start drafting up some from my own preferences, and experiment with carving.  It's been a while since I last carved something substantial.  If you want to see how a certain design would look, let me know and if it's not too difficult, I'll comp an example and post pictures of it.

So...

We would have two people playing chess on one side of the arena. Whatever move they make determines what happens on the board. If a piece were to eat another piece, they would do something, some sort of action...like a fan attack or such.
To show what piece is what, have ribbons or something tied to their shoulder to signify what they represent.

-for kings: use the King of All Cosmos. That would be cool...

A King of All Cosmos would be quite awesome, as would a 'Gambling King' from Ranma, 'King' from King of Fighters, 'King' from Tekken, or King Gidorah. :D

I believe that the sign-ups are on hold until we can see the plans being a bit more static...

but I am not certain.

Exactly. I'd ask everyone to keep their eyes peeled very soon on this very forum as we'll be announcing the event, which looks like it'll be officially a recognized portion of Fanime.

So far a good chunk of the main staff like the idea, and it seems we'll be the first convention on the west coast (correction please?) to have such a shindig and I can tell lots of you here are chomping at the bit, but right now, I only need one thing from you guys:

PLEASE BE PATIENT.

Once we have everything sorted out like rules and policies, we can begin sign ups for all the games and dates. I'm not one to post up policies and just yank em out at the last minute if I can help it, so it's crucial we're all on the same page.
Also since almost everyone here is a "Do-it-yerselfer", Just kick back on providing material at the moment. I'd rather have the convention foot the bill before making someone get stuck with a tab.

But please by all means offer your services and let us know what you can do. My PM works just fine. Or throw out things you'd like to see handled or run at the games right here. I'll be sure to read them.

Mike Stevens

Our board at Anime Boston is 2x2 foot squares and it's pretty tight, so I recommend 3x3 if you can swing it.

I'm glad to see chess spreading.  We'll be having it at Connecticon again in 2006.  Anime Boston hasn't made any announcements yet, but the general assumption is that they will too.  That'll make five matches I've run.  Anyone who wants help or tips, do contact me, masquerade at animeboston dot com.

I can make 3x3, but at that point I'd probably need someone to pitch in. The board at that size would be approximately 288 dollars to produce, I believe. :p

Sounds like fun. There's a giant chest board in Santa Row and I always though it would be fun to get a bunch of friends together to paly life sized chess. There's also a giant monopoly board in the park right by the convention center. I think I'm just a fan of oversized board games in general :)

I'm so in.  To reference a somewhat dissappointing anime, we should cosplay as the Chess no Kuma! :D

I call being a bishop or rook!  Moving a ton of spaces is the best!

Also, we need to make sure the actual people playing chess are good, so we don't waste everyone's time.

Sweet!  Definately sign me up for this  :D .  I'm figuring this will be on either Saturday or Sunday, so I think my cosplay line-up for this year's Fanime will be either RO Assassin (w/ Katars) or Kurogane (Tsubasa Chronicle) for those days, fyi.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but let's not count our chickens for now, eh?

Let's bide our time for a little longer before we start taking serious sign-ups because after all, should this go through, it means a serious time commitment from any person who wants to be a piece and moreso from the players and coordinators. This means that before we ask you to make such a commitment we really want to make sure that this event is even happening...

Update:

I have consulted with the awesome head of Live Programming and am currently working on a proposal/plan for this. I NEED to know whether people are actually interested in being PLAYERS of cosplay chess. We have a ton of cosplayers, now, but I have seen only one player respond on the polls.

Remember. Without people to play chess, cosplay chess cannot happen.

We won't need too many players (and we obviously have more than enough cosplayers...). I'd say between sixteen and thirty two players would seat us quite nicely.

Alrighty. My proposal has been sent to Jason Ebner, the Lord of Live Programming, as I've mentioned, but I shall outline what I have proposed to him here for your benefits (that is, the parts that are relevent to nonstaffmembers). If you want me to gush at you about my cosplay chess plans, feel free to IM me :3

Tenets of Fanime's cosplay chess:

1: Leading up to chess, a tourney of timed, short chess rounds (proposed at fifteen minutes timed per round, may up that time if we have less players)

2: The two winners of said tourney pick their cosplayers from the list of signed up cosplayers. Those cosplayers act as their pieces on a designated day for the final round.

3: Who knows? Depending on how much time and budget this thing has we may have time for best two out of three or something for the final round.

4: Cosplayers should be ready for photo-ops. :3

5: There will be a short meeting before the cosplay chess itself so that players and pieces can sign releases and whatnot and everybody can be clear on rules. ^_^

6: This is still definitely a work in progress but as of this time I have taken charge of cosplay chess. I don't do things halfway so, Jason's approval permitting, I WILL make this work and it will be fun for all. If you have suggestions and commentary or would like to see the proposal itself feel free to IM me. The same goes for if you would like to help to make this happen. I'm figuring that the staff for this event, should it go through, will be at MOST four or five people, maybe six.

We're probably more likely to be giving explicit directions to pieces.

IE: You! The crossplaying Queen Beryl! Move two spaces forward and one space to the right! Take that six-foot tall Hinata!
