(My) Ideas for events/panels/etc...
-Open stage
Since there are a lot of performers out there (music, cosplay, acting, and others) and Der Cosplay and MusicFest may be too big of a stage for their performance, let's make 1 or 2 small stages out in the open that's available anytime for on-stage performances. There can be signups to 'rent' the stage for a specific time and show.
-Fanime Safari
If FanimeCon is your first time at a convention, you will be overwhelmed when you enter. How about having a tour of the con? A group of around 10 would follow a 'tour guide' around the facility and teach them the ways of a con (the tour starts every hour  ). To make sure the tourists don't escape into the wild, there would be free gifts at the end of the tour.
-Fanime Public Radio
(I kinda said something about this during 2004's Nami Tamaki music loops over the PA system, but I seems like there's no need for this now. But anyways...)
If you want to request a song, give a shout out to, leave messages, announce your arrival, etc... you can have limited access to the convention center's PA system, just like a radio station. There might also be contests and prizes for those that listen. (It's also a better way to get attention if there are changes to the schedule or room assignments)
I have more, but I can't really put them into words yet.

In the context of a safari...it'd be one helluva hilarious ride...XD
I'm all for giving people Fanime tours, though. I'll even volunteer for it.
-ballroom dance
if you are not up to the main dance and want somethign a little more classival, refined, and romantic ^.~, this woudl be fun! come on!
i liek the safari idea and teh radio idea. but i do not know how much room there is for random stages without blocking anything. maybe int eh back on teh dealer's room or something?
I think the radio idea is a very good one; especially when it comes to announcing any changes to the viewing schedule. It's better than having to go to a table to find out about any changes.
i like it to say, announce registration for the next year's con, or for announcing times that main events happen. (der cosplay, dealer's room open/close, large panels, etc.)
:x The screens! Did no one see the screens?! Are they worth the effort?!
Oh, I did see the screens with cosplayers and event listings. They were very nicely done. ^_^ I think she's saying ahead of time, though.
sorry... i walk with my head down most of the time... so unless they are on the floor... ^^"
I wish there was a way we could post stuff on the screens on the sides of the stage of the der cosplay. like aim via cell phone or something.
You see a dumb skit, you shoot off a message like 'theres 5 mintues of my life I'd like back' and BAM it pops up on the screen.
Can we have fanime balloons?...please?
and i want to have a convention campout. you know... with like... tents and stuff in the convention center. flashlights, sleeping bags, the whole nine yards! minus the bugs and fire XP
i agree on the ballroom dancing, or even swing dancing or anything of the like, i dont really care for the 'rave' too much as the idea of having a different dance, it'd be awesome if someone would set up a room and have this.

I'm up for it too! I'm ready to do some dancing! Didn't dance as much as I thought I would at this years Fanime, but the Moogleborg, Mooglehat and all, will be ready to dance there next year! But if theres gonna be a room for various dancing, don't forget to call me in! ^^

*snickers* announce your arrival. Yeah I wanna do that.
"Ahem. The short chick in visual kei makeup has arrived."

That'd be a rather messed up (but amusing nonetheless) way to boo the guys. Plus, what'd happen if people spam the message?

This would be really cool especially if you can do streaming thru shoutcast. But the PA system idea would be a train wreak because people get really stupid when there is a mike in their face.
I am suprised that there hasn't been a big ass bulleten board where people can post up flyers, shoutouts, etc on there.

I...I don't think I can dance all classically... o_o;;;; *thinks about it* and yes, it WOULD be fun... very interesting... *sees two typos* XD
A ballroom dance is good for a lot of couples (sometimes if they just met at the con), so that is a good idea.
-gah...it brings bad memories...
How about a Fanime scavenger hunt in the con center? Last year it was around town, right?
List of things to get
-Car campers
-package of ramen
-box of pocky
-stuffed animal
You know... like, add to the list of things to get in the everyday con world.
I'd be glad to help with the Safari, that's a good idea. ^_^ I really liked the Sushi stand this year, it was a little pricy, but I was thankful for some real food. I'm a big eater, so the wider range of food the better!
Since I don't think this idea was brought over from Spiritsnare's forum...
Mass use of Walkie Talkies to communicate.... how cool would that be? for all the fanime board members to be able to communicate on walkie talkies.
I like the idea of the safari tour. XD Con centers can be confusing when you're wandering around by yourself.
Also, I would've liked for the scavenger hunt to be in the con center. (I understand why it wasn't though. They can't make it too easy when they're giving away a PSP but it was too much....)
The only problem with it requiring getting plushies, pocky, or other items is that people will rush to just get those things for the hunt and there wouldn't be the items for the people who actually want to buy it. It'd be horrible if someone buys the last plushie/model/etc. of your fave series just for a scavenger hunt....
i still like the idea of some kind of dancing event.
i agree with meli, that more food selections would be cool, or just more food vendors in general would be nice.
A singles meet and greet would be nice. A dance or Ball thing... (Never been to Fanime, 2006 will be my first year)
Hmm...
How about something like an art board for all artists to draw on? Maybe each day will be like a different subject?
i want some kind of gothic lolita event... more thanjust a meet up, yanno?
I'm liking the idea of a dance that's a little less... clubbish. I'd prefer swing to ballroom, though, since it's more of a social dance than a romantic dance. With swing, it's easier to toss around/switch partners.

Isn't swing considered ballroom dancing? Anyway, I know eastcoast, merenge, and salsa, so anyone who wants to learn, just find me! Yeah, we don't need too much romantic dancing, do we? I guess we could throw a couple of those dances into the mix. But swing sounds great. Especially if there was a small class/panel about the basics beforehand. Maybe? Maybe not?

Oh... is it considered ballroom? I didn't know that, I just assumed it was in a different category for some reason. ^^;
A basic class would be great, since it's relatively easy to make up your own moves and such once you know the basics. I know most people probably had a little bit of swing dancing in either middle or high school, but a refresher is always nice. :)
More ideas:
-Wireless room and Laptop Network
A room dedicated for wireless gaming (and Pictochat stuff) for the DS, PSP (non-stop Lumines), and laptop plug-in. People bring laptops everywhere they go, even just to show off their desktops and iTunes collection. This place can also be where you can recharge said devices.
-Fanime Food Court
Have a seperate area/aisle in the dealers room solely for food dealers. (Bad idea, cuz the SJCC may lose customers...)
-RC Race Track
Make a piece of the SJCC into a large race track for RC or slot cars (a pretty good idea if you ask me). Remember that old anime store at the Great Mall? Kinda like that, but with also a free roam race track for RC hobby cars (like what I saw at the San Jose Grand Prix).
-Initial D Cosplay Drifting
For those Initial D shopping cart cosplayers, have your own track to race in, like around the fountain or something. Potentially dangerous, but seriously fun to watch.
-Pimp My Costume
Just like the show, but for cosplay.
you should have a jpop and jrock music room.they would play music, videos and even concert from different artist

I'm all for this, as well. Otakon had a super awesome PV room that played relatively late at night, and it was a very nice touch. Great for when you're up late and need something to watch/sing between events/shows. The main reason they had one at Otakon, though, was because there was a group who had a panel (I think it was either a music or fansub panel) at the convention, and they fansubbed PVs. It was really neat, I think they were called 'Red Apple Productions' or something like that. I remember they did a stretch of HIDE videos for us when the room was more or less a group of twenty or so VK fangirls.
Anyways, yes, if someone could set this up it'd be great! I don't know what legal gunk you have to cut through to do it, but if it's possible... :D Hell, I could probably donate a few dozen if there's a lack (official DVDs of PVs and that sort of thing), but again, I have no idea if you have to get permmission to show those or not.
Quote from: "Charming_Dorian"i want some kind of gothic lolita event... more thanjust a meet up, yanno?
yeah. im planning on dressing gothic lolita next year. maybe fashion show/catwalk? im just throwing out ideas...

i second this. VK is the best.
I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I've got an idea for a panel:
Ecchis Anonymous (or something like that). You know, a panel down kinda like Alcoholics Anonymous, for otaku with a uh, fanservice problem.
"Hi I'm Bob and I have an ecchi problem"
"HI BOB!"
(Don't ask me where I came up with this)
there is a how to talk to girls panel, right? why not how to talk to guys?
I posted this elsewhere, but......Fanime needs to sell glow sticks for their rave. Last time there weren't enough to go around, and other people would hoard theirs. Not to mention they could sell other glowyness like stickers and frisbees to get people in the mood for fun. ^^;
Quote from: "Nina Star 9"there is a how to talk to girls panel, right? why not how to talk to guys?
I second this one!
Girls can have just as much trouble talking to guys, we deserve a panel of our own! :o

Sounds like a great idea! Even though I'm a guy.....I'm really good at talking to women......but guys are just plain nuts <.<;;
Oh yeah I also wanted to say that we need someone GMing the latest version of BESM for tabletop gaming. What is BESM you ask? Big Eyes Small Mouth (Think something like Anime version of Dungeons And Dragons). I didn't see it on the sign up sheet last year and I think a lot of us would really enjoy it...besides it doesn't make sense NOT to since this is all about the anime!!
^^ Aww, I like the ballroom idea. :D That would be nice. Just switch from like swing dance and slow dances and what not. :D As said before, that would be nice for couples or people you just met. :oops: I really hope they look into this. Because...I'm not a raver. >_> I can't dance like that and swing shiney glowsticks around all cool like (as fun as it IS to watch). o.O;
I mentioned this somewhere else but I don't even know if it got read.
What about having some english music to sing in the kareoke room? I was really excited until I found out only anime music was available.
I know that this is an anime convention, but isn't kareoke just part of japanese culture anyways? It might also draw more people to the room.

you can bring your own CDs. japanese music is just encouraged. i do not think they will kick out out for singing something in english you brought.
plus, they had plenty of anime and video game songs in languages other than japanese, mostly thsoe were in english, but there were other languages, too. i personally did one in swedish.
Actually, we had a cd with some random English songs on it and they wouldn't let us use it because it wasn't related to anime or video games.

I saw Eurobeat King in a cardboard (was it cardboard) car from Initial D at the Cherry Blossom parade this year. Maybe you could do something like that and just race around the fountain. Sorry bad idea.

We were supposed to have a bishie scavenger hunt that didn't happen (logistics I think), add a photo of a bishie cosplayer
Not just any pocky, perhaps anything BUT a particular flavor.
Or like the hunt this year where when you went from site to site, you got a stamp. Say make the list of specific items that are visible in the con area and you have to right down the location of the item to get credit for it. I may not be clear on this, but I think they do this at Chinese New Year in Chinatown (SF), where a sign or something is posted at different spots, you get a map guiding you to the spot but the sign is not immediately visible. You have to go from spot to spot, I'm not sure exactly how this works, has anyone done this?
For example, the item is a plush Luffy from One Piece. He'd be taped to the wall in the arcade area. Your map would show the arcade area but not the exact spot (could be behind a game on the wall or on the upper corner of a doorway - don't know if there'd be a problem getting approval for taping stuff at different areas in the convention area).
Oh gosh I'm rambling. I'll quit now.

Hmm... That's a cool idea! How about getting a track for those Mini 4WD slot car things by Tamiya? That'd be sweet, and I'll enter mine!
It's not an event for the convention, but a sponsorship opportunity. FanimeCon could sponsor the San Jose Grand Prix in some way (although I know that it not the target audience). Taylor Woodrow, the title sponsor for the 2005 race, is now the presenting sponsor. So the race next year is currently called "San Jose Grand Prix presented by Taylor Woodrow". It's just a dream I had last night (too much turkey, I think), but it may be possible for the race to be called "FanimeCon Grand Prix of San Jose".

I'm crazy, I know.
I've started a thread titled Pictures? (http://www.fanime.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3937) looking for people who are willing to help out with this if it'll be allowed.
Overview what it's about: I pretty much want to put a table together where people can upload there pictures from there digital cameras to share to everyone... added bounes to those cosplayers who wants a copy of there pictures.
But, this is just an ideal and would like to see how many people are intersted in it...

THAT IS SUCH A GOOD IDEA!!!!!! That way you can have TONS of pics!!! You should also have a burning station where you can bring in a blank cd and have it burned of the pics from the day before.
Quote from: "sykoeent"You should also have a burning station where you can bring in a blank cd and have it burned of the pics from the day before.
I, myself, don't have a external CD/DVD Burner, nor I have one on my laptop (didn't had the money at the time, nor did I need it, I have my external hard drive and my multi-card reader). I do have a multi-card reader where you could use your CF 1 & 2, SD, MMC, RS-MMC, SM, MS, Pro, Duo, or PRO Duo card... if you wanna help, you could bring an external burning drive if you want... like I said, if we have enough people intersted enough to make this happen, lets make it happen :)
The picture sharing idea is great! Share your photo memories with everyone.
As far as CD/DVD burners, I have an internal CD/DVD burner in my Powerbook, and I'm sure other people have burners in their laptops too. This might help with making copies (I've got an external Super-drive too, that I'll bring if this event does happen).
USB jump-drives are real handy as well, and are becoming quite cheap (got a 256 MB one at Fry's yesterday for $9.00).
Yep, so far the following ways of getting and giving is throw the follow (differ per person):
CD Burning (maybe a charge per CD? unless it's a CD they bring?)
Memory card (like I said, I have a 12 in 1 memory card holder)
Jump-drives
any external drive also
network (I have a cross over adapter that I could use with my stright through cables (that's the only cables I have) unless someone has a cross over cable or well bring in a router).
there could be more *shrugs* plus, doing this, we could also take pictures on the spot and such (with my camera, when I have it plug into my computer, I could take pictures and it'll automacty goes onto my computer, bypassing the memory card; I'm sure other digital cameras are like that also).
so, who's with me!?
oh.... maybe I should get a portable backdrop also to set it up for us picture phops? along with a lighting set?
I would like to see a poster board somewhere that people can just write down the times and locations for various Cosplay Gatherings.
Maybe down in registration, so that when people arrive, they can see when various groups are meeting and reschedule/plan their cosplay costume wearing schedule accordingly.

Ha, somebody who is thinking like us (the marketing dept)... Kowaii! Just kidding.
I'd like to see Fanime become more involved with the community in events that are not necessarily anime related because I think it is important to give back to the community who hosts our crazy con. For example, Fanime was one of the sponsors for a Hurricane Katrina Relief Concert in San Jose at the end of October. So far, the events I've done personally are small (or not so small) anime events in and around the bay area. However, I'm looking for events, not necessarily related to anime, where if Fanime made a contribution in some way then it would make a difference.
So, the point of this post is: Let us know about events like the Grand Prix. There are tons of ways of letting us know like posting in the forums (I read quite a bit of them), emailing us at
[email protected], coming to the meetings to let us know in person, or if you should recognize one of us on the street...
That post about the scavenger hunt, I'll forward it off to Stamp Rally. It would up their alley, as they're already trying to get you guys to go find stamps for prizes in and outside the con.
I love coming into threads so late like this.
the radio station thing is such an awesome idea, and I think the DJ booth should be set up inside one of the panel rooms so that people can come talk with the DJ and such; mini interviews and whatnot.
As far as staffing it, I'd be more than happy to play the role of DJ GTL.
Shazzam.
I know there was a specific thread about this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it, even with the search function...
Someone asked once what would be good on the video screens that cover the concourse, rather than the changing images/schedule/etc. I think a loop of AMVs would be nice. It'd probably require an extra bit of work on the AMV coordinators' part, but just about every year at the Finals they say that there were videos they wanted to go into the Finals but there simply wasn't enough time. Why not play them there, and the winning videos from prior years? Even just the videos that made it to the Finals in prior years. It's neat to see those vids again and sometimes they never go up on the internet, so you only get to seem them possibly that one and only time at the convention. It'd have to be a pretty big loop, though, or just a one-time thing. But since each contest has been running for about 2 hours lately, that probably wouldn't be a huge problem...
(Just as long as none of the current finals videos were played prior to the actual screening, as people might see them too much and be bothered by them and feel no need to go see the actual contest)
I think we should have dance classes so people like myself can go to the raves and not feel so stupid trying to dance, and not really doing well ^^; Like some rave dancing classes would be AWESOME!! I think then we could make the rave even BIGGER!! ^_^
Last year I went to the rave and danced around like a dork in a big empty room, and tried to ask people to dance with me really nicely, and they looked at me like my hair was on fire.
I hope it wasn't on fire...
So, wow. People are actually interested in ballroom, salsa, swing?
WELL....This may be the wrong time to offer (or the right time to offer for next year), but I hereby volunteer to teach ballroom dance.
It'd be even cooler if it got me on staff (though I might be onboard for tabletop gaming next year anyway). Maybe I could get some staff service hours for working the game room, and some for teaching dance / playing danceable jpop/rock/etc music for a ballroom/swing/etc DANCE.
I can teach:
East Coast Swing
Salsa
Merengue
Waltz
Foxtrot
the Hustle
Night Club Two-Step (for ballady stuff)
Samba
Cha Cha
Rumba
Tango
Bolero
Lindy Hop (maybe a little, any way)
Idea!
If we could somehow get a world-renowned Eurobeat artist or two (or three, or four...) to come down, perform, and maybe even lead a panel on Eurobeat music and its composition in '07, or a workshop...
...I'd make it a point to attend again, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
Idea!
how about a catier for all the days so we don't starve. -bleh- some of us didn't have any food or ddn't want to buy any.
Quote from: "Not_A_Shrimp"Idea!

Now I don't know about catiers, but caterers for all the Fanime guests? At no extra cost to the attendees? Way not cost effective for the con unless they raise badge prices more. Then there will probably be a lot of people who wouldn't even eat the food they paid for and there will always be the piggies who take advantage and eat everything in site. Bottom line: You've paid for a badge, that gets you access to the convention activities. Need somewhere to sleep? Need food? You're going to have to take care of it yourself.

Here's a small suggestion for the fanime site:
There are spam bots that can surf the net and "screen scrape" a webpage in search of an email address. One way to defend yourself is to write your email address like this
username at yourdomain dot com However it wouldn't surprise me if some bots have been programmed to be "smart enough" to read that. Basically if you have a webpage that lists your email address, the spam bots can get you!
The fanime.com -> contact us site -> displays email addresses.
Perhaps a contact form with a textarea box and submit button can be used instead?
here's a ridiculously silly egg-sam-apple :D contact form (http://yunnie.org/contact-form.php)
I honestly don't know how much good this will do in defending against spam. It's a constant game of cat and mouse. Everytime you come up with a better defense someone out there invariably finds a way around.
