Live Programming and Events / FANIMECON 2018 DANCE
January 17, 2018, 12:15:50 AM
FANIMECON 2018 DANCE INFO

* The DJ selection process will not be open for applicants in 2018.
* This will be the only update in the forums for this year.  Please go to the main FanimeCon Website for updates including rules of entry and music schedule:
https://www.fanime.com/events/#dance

can a newsletter or section be added to the fanime.com website for day zero?
while some people might say there is no need for that since it's not an official day, I think it would be helpful to see what they can actually do (registration, swapmeet, gaming, dance) and perhaps an introduction to CSI and a noob guide to the con...?

Exciting news FanimeCon Attendees!
In 2017, we are introducing 1 new element and making one of last year's Fan Event part of the Programming Schedule.

KPOP DANCE PARTY
Friday, Saturday, Sunday 3PM to 6 PM RM 230
Meet other attendees that share your passion for KPOP in a non-competitive atmosphere!
   Play the KPOP Chorus Game!
Bust your favorite KPOP dance moves to all the biggest KPOP Hits spun by DJ PeterLo of KPOPCAST (http://kpopcast.net)

B-Boy/Girl Hangout
Friday, Saturday, Sunday 1 PM to 3 PM RM 230
In 2017, a space will be provided for the dancers that have hungout in the lobby and hallways for years.
It is the hope that by providing this space for the dancers, it will alleviate the congestion in the main lobby and hallways.  Please help
make this successful. Add your request to this thread or bring your own beats on a usb stick or cd(The Dance's Sound system WILL be in use for this) and enjoy the opportunity to show
off your moves on a real dance floor.

While the normal Evening Dance rules will not be in effect for these 2 events, additional regulations and code of conduct might be posted later.

If you have questions/comments send to dance [at] fanime.com

This year the DJ application period will be open from NOW till December 31, 2016
Any applications received on or after January 1, 2017 will not be considered.

The application can be found here: https://goo.gl/forms/Ngw4qM9uIv4wWSTq2

The DJ selection process has changed for 2017. In recent years we had lots of performers
(44 in 2015 and 38 in 2016). In 2017 we will be selecting fewer DJs and possibly giving
more time to those selected. This application is intended to provide you an opportunity
to express your interest in performing at the FanimeCon 2017 Dance.

In 2016 we received the criticism that we had too much Big Room House, Trap, and
hardcore.  Unfortunately, our selection pool was limited.  In 2017, while we might pay
special attention to an application that is not one of these genres, we expect DJs to apply
with their best genre and one that they can give their best performance with regardless
of set length.  Please note that we have not yet decided which genres to focus on this year.
It was quite a surprise in 2016 to have one our trance DJs chased off the stage with the
crowd chanting for "HIP HOP".

Please remember that we expect all our DJs to actually beat match and mix, simply
crossfading songs will not score points with the selection team.

This application has been posted to give applicants time to prepare, express interest,
and the management team time to review interested candidates.

* Even though review criteria may change over the year, your application will be
reviewed on the requirements stated at the time of your application.

1. The DJ Selection process is open from NOW (Nov 2016) till December 31, 2016
2. DJs/Performers are not considered to be staff members.
2.2 DJs/Performers will have to obtain an official form of entry to the convention.
2.3 Selected DJs are not compensated and will not receive a badge or money.
2.4 Selected DJs will not receive any discounts on a FanimeCon Badge.
2.5 Selected DJs will not be able to book an "opener" and are expected to perform their entire slot by themselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FanimeCon is a growing annual anime convention held at the San Jose
Convention Center during Memorial Day Weekend.  Every year there are more DJs interested
in performing at the dance than spots available.  The DJ Selection process has been put in
place to create a fair system for offering performance time to members of FanimeCon while
balancing the genres attendees are interest in and maintaining a performance standard.

The 2017 Dance Management Team's mission is to successfully plan dance
events during FanimeCon which promote a fun, safe, and enjoyable experience
for attendees.  These dance events must contribute to the overall success
and support the growth of FanimeCon.

Once again, PLEASE NOTE that DJs and Performers will need to obtain their own entry to the convention.

Questions/comments regarding these provisions should be sent to [email protected].

-   All Dance Staff positions and performers are on a volunteer basis
     (there is no financial compensation).
-   All Dance Staff positions and performers must adhere to the requirements, rules, and code
of conduct for all FanimeCon Staff members and attendees.
-   DJs must have been selected through the DJ Selection Process
(Exception: Industry and Guest of Honor DJs)
-   Staff participation or  previous FanimeCon Performance experience will not guarantee a timeslot on the
     2017 DJ Schedule.
o   Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2016
         o   Application Requirements
+   Every applicant will be contacted by a Selection Committee member.
+   In Addition to the Application, DJs must provide:
                        •   A 30 Minute (minimum) mix of what they intend on playing if selected.
They can provide the selection committee their submission by
sending an email link or through an arrangement with the
Selection Committee. This can be a link to a soundcloud, mixcloud,
google drive, or file share site.
o   Submission of this mix gives the Dance Management Team your
approval to use this mix in the future for promotion of the Dance Event.
o   Selections will be based on skill, music format, equipment used, participation, and contribution to FanimeCon.
o   Applicants under the age 18 at the start of the 2017 event will not be considered.
o   The Dance Management Team will contact applicants between Jan and Feb
o   Final selections will be made and selected DJs will be notified by February 1, 2017.
o   DJs that were not selected will be notified on February 16, 2017.

Ideas and Suggestions / Line Management Department
July 07, 2014, 11:59:10 AM
I'd like to see a specific department for Line Management that could be a specific sub-team of an existing department dedicated ONLY to Line Management.

While the days of "LineCon" for reg might have appeared to be solved, the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality doesn't apply to lines elsewhere in the con.

I believe that a team or department should be created to deal with these lines, and analyze and report back why they exist.  While lines can be great for establishing something is going on ("hey there's a lot of people in line, let's check it out"), they can also be caused by a temporary logistical hold up (bag/badge checks at the dance, dress code checks at black and white, id checks at the 18+ events, etc).

Currently, the rovers have been tasked with general crowd control, but dedicating trained rovers to line management instead of patrols causes a deficit in one required function.  At the dance, if I have to use more rovers and staff outside to manage a temporary line of a 1000 people, I have less doing checks at the door and inside patrolling.  This is also a problem when there is counter programming (like the early hours of the dance vs musicfest or black and white).

Additionally, I believe this new team should have access to their own stanchions (this way a department's budget doesn't get hurt by a sudden temporary need), plan ahead for extra stanchion deployment, or have direct contact with the venue's stanchion team.  Facilities is great at doing this for us now, however when there are multiple issues going on, this could represent a 20 to 30 minute delay.  Being able to move the stanchions gives the con the ability to more quickly respond and control line situations.  A team that has already worked with both the rovers, logistics, and facilities to understand restrictions (like if in the con center or parkside hall, a union facilities tech has to be there, or in a hotel, what that hotel may or may not have available)

The line management team should also be able to quickly understand the needs of the event they are managing the line for and conveying any additional information necessary (ie: at the dance, reminder to read the rules or that no bags are allowed).

I know staff are discouraged from making suggestions like these in the forums, however I have chosen to post this here for the following reasons:
(1) Ideas need support, reply and provide your support if you feel like this would improve your experience
(2) If created, it would need a staff, taking existing staff from other departments would defeat the purpose, so if it interests you as something you want to do, look in to it.
(3) While a need of my department, the function is outside my division :P

Please help us determine if we are going to have the dance on day zero (Pajama party).
Attendance reached an all time high in 2011, but in 2012 (with the power outage) and 2013 (registration/swap meet in a different location), attendance/interest has continued to decline.  Should we still have it in 2014, your poll answers will help us decide.

Live Programming and Events / Dubstep at the dance?
August 30, 2011, 01:49:22 PM
There were/are a lot of requests for dubstep at the dance so this thread will focus on that very topic.

Like any request, a DJ's apprehension to playing it stems from the basic questions -> will people like it? will people dance to it?  Afterall, is it really a dance if people are just standing around saying wtf is this?

As a DJ, you either really love or really despise the genre.  I'd be open to playing it if there was going to be a favorable response.  There's nothing worse than for a DJ to play a request, have the majority of the room hate it and think that the DJ sucks because he played YOUR request.  If you make a request, you need to dance to it.  If you plan on standing there bobbing your head to the music but not getting on the floor and dancing, don't request or ask for it.

For many people when they hear dubstep the simply wonder, "how the hell do you dance to this?"
Don't get me wrong, I think those that dubstep are awesome dancers.  Unfortunately, the average person on the floor (especially those new to EDM) will be lost...  If you really want it at the dance, use this thread to help promote the genre...posting links to videos showing "dubstep" (dance) examples.  Explain the music! Rally the support!

Live Programming and Events / Dances at other Cons
July 04, 2011, 08:08:12 PM
As AX comes to a close, I figured I'd ask now.
What do the dances at other Cons have that you wish FanimeCon Dances would have?
3 rules:

1. Don't talk about specific DJs (if this becomes an option we'll ask it another time... since the majority of the con would probably
rather have the money go to a musicfest guest)
2. Don't talk about musical style (yeah yeah..dub step....j-core..anime music...we already heard the forum posters there)
3. Don't say alcohol (because FanimeCon IS a dry con...)
