I just thought I'd make a topic thread about this and hear everyone's thoughts on it, rumors, etc.
What do you think about the rumor of Zac Efron playing Light Yagami?
I can't feel threatened by that pretty boy and the theaters will be full of screaming fan girls who really only have an interest in the actor rather than every else about the movie.

^ Chances are that there would be a much younger actor to play a L rather than Johnny. I can't see Zac Effron being serious character.
Zac Efron is actually a Death Note fan from what I hear, so I have some faith in him to some extent.
And please, Johnny fucking Depp better not take the spotlight as L if he is casted as him, since the Alice in Wonderland situation was sorta...bullshit.

That's what I heard about Efron also.
I'm sure Johnny won't be completely terrible as L
I think Jhonny Depp would be a good L but I think Hollywood will totally mess up the movie.
I'm sure Depp would have no trouble playing a serious character like L, but I have a feeling they wouldn't write the script to have L be so serious if the actor playing him was Depp. Also, younger would be nice indeed.
And whether Zac Effron plays Light well or not doesn't matter, I believe. Fangirls will still be a problem.

You know how Hollywood likes to dumb things down for American audiences (a la Harry Potter and the Magic Rock) while also trying to update for today's audience, so maybe they'll have Light (who they'll rename to Dwight) use some kind of online journal to kill people instead. And they won't just fall over dead, they'll thrash around for five minutes as the Grim Reaper stands over them and reaches into their body and crushes their heart.

It will end as all others before it. The studio will market to the wrong audience (completely ignoring the built in fan base), mutilate the storyline until it's unrecognizable, miscast it horribly (i.e. Keanu Reeves as Spike) and it will be one big, fat FAIL. Sadly. This is what Hollywood does. They latch on to popular things hoping to make money and then ruin them so no one in their right mind would actually pay money for them. Kind of ironic, really.

It'd be cool if they went by the anime and manga and actually put Mello and Near in the movie. They could make probably 3 movies if they went exactly by the manga.
