This is probably better in the "About the Forums" area so that I can see it.

Anyway, yeah, I'm sick of the forum spam too.
It's really peaked in the last 60 days.
Loosely, there's a -lot- of hacked gmail, hotmail, yahoo accounts that are seeding most of it.

I've installed an extra set of spam filters to help stem the flow.
There are probably two more than I may install.

I also have about 20000 accounts to review and purge.
Fun times.

Words!

Schedule/Maps/official information will be available on the web/mobile web.   I am expecting to have a corresponding iPhone application as developed by FanimeCon staff.  I would like to have a corresponding Android application as developed by FanimeCon Staff, but this is a medium promise, not a strong promise.  Again, these sentences only apply to presentation of official data such as Schedule/Maps/Changes/Guide, etc.

FourSquare-type-games/Social Networking/Geocaching are fantastic ideas.  I would love to see this available for either iPhone or Android.  I would be willing to sanction this type of app, even if it was developed by an independent creator (hint).  Obviously, there are important legal/IP issues to address, but I have seen my share of "officially-blessed but completely unofficial" spin-off concepts.  This could be one of them.

Things in the Universe / Re: Lolicon Good or Bad.

Let's not go there.

Oh boy.  I was afraid of this.

I was previously willing to sanction a type of social networking app.  That is a fairly broad net, and I can listen to ideas on this point.

However, I cannot really permit a third-party application that essentially duplicates key functions of existing FanimeCon content.

Let me be more plain:

  • FanimeCon is planning a schedule-based iPhone application. This is in addition to existing mobile schedule site.  This means we can't give consent to any app that plans to duplicate this or otherwise re-implement this.
  • FanimeCon 2010 published real-time schedule updates through its mobile schedule RSS feed, as well as other related feeds.  This should be the same or expanded in 2011.  I don't know if you're planning to rebroadcast the twitter updates, RSS feed, or something else, but it is unlikely that we will sanction an application that simply rebroadcasts what we already publish.
  • The FanimeCon 2010 website and program guide included map information (and, I believe, included a "what's nearby" guide).  The FanimeCon 2011 site and guides are expected to do the same.  This means we can't give consent to any app that plans to copy this information.

I understand that I'm being a bit direct, especially when I'm only looking at a picture of an application.

If you want to design an application that isn't simply re-duplicating already extant features, that's different and might turn into a fruitful discussion.

However, when we start seeing our content, especially our official logo, appearing on things that are not created by FanimeCon, that gets into a very testy area and I need to come down on that.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: A fanime Iphone/Android app?

The plan is that the schedule apps are developed in house.

But you're not off the hook yet. ;)

The schedule applications are only focused on the schedule and its updates and some integration with the main site.

A lot of the discussion in this thread was about the social networking features.  These would include things like an IRC chat, something like a four-square check-in, maybe something like a "stamp rally" etc.

While I'm concerned about "fans who walk around the con with their eyes focused on their phone instead of looking around and enjoying stuff", I'm willing to sanction some type of social app.

I'm not sure if this is a direction you were thinking about, but it is an option.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: A fanime Iphone/Android app?

Okay, official words now.
There are other teams who have created internal websites for their use; I'm only focusing on the public sites/applications.

Last year was the first launch of the mobile schedule site, http://m.fanime.com/
There were three angles: the schedule itself, the ability for Info Desk to update the schedule with last minute changes, and an RSS feed to list those changes.  There was some basic search in there as well.
There was a separate bridge between RSS to the official twitter account.
That was the 2010 version, and I think it did reasonably well.

There is a very long list of updates scheduled for the 2011 version of the mobile schedule site.  One of the key things is that a basic mobile schedule site is platform-neutral.  It is still designed to work on nearly any smartphone with a web browser.

Separately, there are plans for an official iPhone schedule app.  I can't publicly commit to a list of features, though.
I have not given a lot of weight to the Android platform, but who knows how that will change around March/April/May.

As for an overall feature list, I have reviewed a few different convention/conference/trade show applications.  There are a lot of great ideas for features, but some ideas are better than others.

I think that's as much official news as I can give right now.

Who said I was angry?  Now you're just making up stuff.

That said, if your purpose was the encourage discussion, well, it turns out that you posted exactly none of those justifications in your original post.  Without that, the original post just seems really out of place on an anime convention forum.

The argument itself is pretty vacuous, filled with faulty assertions and poor links between them.

I'm moving this thread to "Serious Business".  This type of thread is not really appropriate for this sub-forum.
It's a little better over there.

Also you still have not provided any substantiation of your claims, nor have provided non-trivial discussion, so the 72 hour clock continues to run.
You have 57 to go to complete the ADMIN CHALLENGE

Well, I'm going to invoke the ADMIN CHALLENGE.

Here's the deal:

Jiang Jin, please reply to this thread and substantiate your claims, or at least provide some non-trivial discussion on this subject, especially about why you're posting here.

There is a 72 hour time limit from this post.

If you fail, you will get a 90 day ban.

Enjoy.

So, are you writing a book or something (making us unpaid editors)?

Or do you start your day thinking "I need to tell the world about my view on intercourse, by using an anime convention forum"?

Sorry, we used to use help@, but the new address is lostATfanimeDOTcom.

We've never used [email protected].

Also, please email [email protected], even if you post in the thread.

Emailing gives you the best chance of a reply.

I'm only referring to the revised idea as stated.

There is a fundamental rule in comedy:
You can get away with anything, as long as it is funny.

There is a corollary to this rule:
If it is not funny, it will be awful.

At this point in the thread, you have a one concept of a character.  In terms of writing, this is pretty flimsy.
It sounds like one of those "Mr. Cant-Make-Change Man gets a job as a grocery cashier" sketches: we get the joke from the title.

Maybe with a lot of work, you could convert this to a 3 minute sketch on Kids in the Hall, or maybe a 5 minute sketch on Saturday Night Live.
Even then, it's going to be very tricky to stretch this to a 30 or 60 minute bit.

Right now, it just comes off as "not really funny".  And if it's not really funny, then it's going to get perceived as offensive.
We can debate in other threads whether it is right or wrong that we should be offended by satire (and I'm sure someone will take me up on that).

But my point is not about offensiveness.  It is solely about "is it funny".  My current vote is "no".

This is a horrible idea and you shouldn't do it.

At this rate, we might as well allow a "hey, let's make fun of black people" panel.  Maybe you can do it while making slanty eyes.

Hello,

To all who have sent mail to [email protected] and did not get a reply yet:

I've nudged the people in charge, and they said they would clear out their backlog by this weekend.

Thank you for your patience, and they apologize for the inconvenience.

If you have lost something and have not emailed [email protected], please do so; this thread is mostly unmonitored by the l&f people.

Sincerely,

Anime isn't exactly a new phenomenon in the US.

Anime dubbed into English has had limited success at the national level (Sci-Fi channel + Adult Swim + that's about all that matters).
Anime subtitled has had much less success at the national level (occasional one-offs at the Independent Film Channel, or the rare Miyazaki block on TCM).

I think the market has spoken on what it wants.

Yes, it's fine to be an elitist and enjoy Japanese TV shows in their rawest and purest form, which no editing or adaptations to fit a US audience.  But then anime will just be a tiny niche thing that 99% of people won't care about.

If you want anime culture in the US to be more than a niche, then you will need to concede the role of dubs (and the overall concept of "adaptation") in building that audience.

I want a pony.

Big props to Scott for running the evening Game Show - keep doing what you're doing, throw in more questions!

Thank you for the kind words.  It's very rare that I get feedback.

I think the Tournament of Champions thing worked out sorta well, at least for the prizes.

I've debating what to do with the trivia game show.

I don't want it getting too stale.  Maybe I should start a thread in the off season and take suggestions.

Or some of the regulars can PM me.  Either way. :)

Thanks to Stage Zero for having me, and we'll see if it returns for next season.

We were playing Mario Party 8 for the FanimeCon 2010 budgets; $10000 a star.
