Which were you most satisfied with this year, the dealers room or the swap meet?

To answer my own question, I didn't find anything I wanted in the dealers room, but landed myself the original NES Zeldas I and II practically brand new in their boxes at the swap meet.

I did not really get to browse the Swap-Meet much, as I was busy selling like crazy in there. XD
But I did find some promo bleach posters and things you wouldn't find in the Dealers room.
Unfortunately I missed out on another seller who had Hetalia figures! D:
By the time I was able to get away from my spot to look, none were left. (Wa-Wa-Waaaah.)
Over all, it's a tie this year. But maybe next year, Swap-Meet will win as I'll have more time to shop myself.

While I saw some cool things in the dealer room, I generally choked on the prices. I do regret not picking up some of the $20 boxset DVD's, but the apathy and looks I got when asking about getting a break on buying 2 or 3 together generally turns me off. I enjoy seeing and would pay for the rare and unusual, or a really good price on something more common.
the dealer room is fun and low key, buying video games, or the Milk Chan dvd's at a good price made the whole event that much more fun.
So much better to get a percieved deal over being able to brag about how much I paid for something.

Swap Meet. I found tons of mangas for a very good price, also got a cheap Sora figure as well :D

This year at the Dealers Room wasn't that interesting. It was pretty much the same as last year, and that shop at last years con, with the SEX POT ReVeNGe clothes, wasn't there this year, which I was hoping it was D: But, some stores were selling lots of new stuff, so that was fun XD

Swap meet.  I got 8 volumes of Kindaichi Case Files for $25, and for that, the seller owns my soul.  Love you man!  :D

For me, both were pretty equal

Dealers: Managed to find some items that I liked and were a bit unexpected to find (two doujins from artists I liked, Sailor Mercury plushie, mini replica Shiki sword from Samurai Shodow series)

Swap Meet: Though most of what I saw I didn't buy, I did see some nice stuff (like the guys that were selling some japanese game books/mangas/non-h doujins). Plus deals are nice (a free small pack of Pocky for any purchase from one dealer)

At last year's swap meet, I got the entire original Escaflowne VHS box set, practically brand new (the first three volumes had been watched once and not rewound, and the rest were still in shrink wrap), for $5.

I liked them both, really.

Swap meet: I got some harder-to-find and cheaper things (ChuChu Rocket, first half of Red Garden for $15), but most of the things there I had no interest in. Good for people who like more niche items and better prices, but there are no guarentees as to what you will find.

Dealers room: I got all my usual cutesy things (at the booth that at half off all Sanrio merch <3), which I'm happy about. Also, the Celga booth was <3, even if I totally can't afford brand. Still the same crop of merch for the most popular series and overpriced items (and some bad loli clothes...), but I got what I went there for.

Swap Meet. Found some Dreamcast shmups for very reasonable prices, and I found a Dreamcast fight pad.
I also picked up 4 volumes of Evangelion Angelic Days (a $40 value) for $15.

But Dealer's Room was okay too. Picked up a Saturn for $55!

I absolutely without a doubt loved the Swap Meet more. I didn't sell as much as I wanted to but I sold enough to make me content. While walking around on Thursday's Swap Meet, I got Yuki Nagato nendoroid AND figma figures for only $20 total! And they're legit too~ I was happy to say the very least.

The Dealers' Room was okay. I got some Gurren Lagann stuff and random plushies but they're just things I'd normally get online anyway so it was decent-ish. The only "deal" I liked was getting the GL keychains/phone charms 3 for $10.

And even though it wasn't an option on this poll but I liked the Artist Alley more then the Dealers' Room. There were tons of prints I wanted to get but I didn't have the budget (or wall space) so I ended up getting one print and one original water colored piece. Both are gorgeous~

I was not a big fan of dealers because I went to the Celiga booth and for USED tea party shoes they charged waaaay too much for them not to mention the bunny bear bags (the really small one) was overpriced as well. It goes for 40 market wise

thats my only gripe lol

The problem with the Dealers' Room is that they just charge the same price as their online price + tax + shipping so they aren't really worth it except from an instant gratification point.

i.e there were no real deals to be had.

I was able to find a nice price for my Cammy Figurine, and I saw some Ayanami Rei bedsheets that were pretty awesome. Although I WILL admit that many of the prices could have been more competitive with what you can get off Amazon or E-Bay. ^^; I also really love my cat ear hat, which is totally spiffy, and I've gotten some great compliments on my wings...although in retrospect I'd say those Large Wings WERE a bit overpriced considering they were made of foam >.<

I remember at the Swap Meet I got like a 4"-6" Figurine for only $10 total! I mean that's the kind of bargains I want! I also got a Menchi Plushie for only $16. That's the kinda of stuff that the dealer's room should have!

I had good moments on Dealers room for finding somethin I needed Right away:
Seto San from orchid seed was a good find and manage to finally got it autographed on monday ^ ^! yeay!!!
erh but the rest seems, kinda hard to focus on what I really wanted to get. Some are overpriced, others seems easier to get and cheaper online! (official ones, not bootleg and I know its illegal to sell that in both halls)

however I barely found anything I wanted from the swap meet:
The only thing I enjoyed the most is selling my keyblades and everything I have!
although alot of people were shocked for the Kingdom hearts play arts arms!I can admit it was expensive, but hopefully this next year I can drop the price down to at least 125 (its at least 3times the value folks -_-!). I was hoping for something nice from the kuroshitsuji merchandise to find, but I only found pencil boards and cards. Has anyone found anything nice of it?

all in all, i had more fun on the swap meet, selling all my stuff:) and makig people happy!
although the one thing I still feel upset is selling my Tezuka tiger short stories comics!. Still at least I made her happy!

I normally save my money for the Swap Meet, as most of the things I want I can get their cheaper than anywhere else.

That said, I was much happier with the Swap Meet this year than the Dealers Room. Found some nicely priced games.

Which are all other reasons I prefer the Swap Meet. I've found a number of hard to find games on the cheap and various other bits and bobs in previous years there. When looking into other conventions, I tend to look to see if they have a Swap Meet scheduled or not (I missed YaoiCon's Swap Meet this year....).

The problem with the Swap Meet is there prices are either way cheap or ridiculously expensive. This guy that was selling trading cards (mainly YuGiOh) was selling the cards WAY above the standard secondary Market prices. And at the same time I found a poster for Pokemon Yellow Version on sell for $1.
In contrast, when I went to the card shop in the Dealers Room the cards were reasonably priced and followed average prices of the Secondary Market, while that poster may have sold for $10 or more.

The quality of the products in the Dealers Room are usually more then that of the Swap Meet though. Most Items in the swap meet are used or otherwise been owned. The Dealers room items, with a few exceptions, are all packaged and untouched for the most part.

I prefer both for what they have to offer.

I said something to this effect in a different topic about the Swap Meet, but most sellers (swap meet or otherwise) know that most a majority of people assume that A. Anything sold at a Swap Meet is cheaper than you'd get it elsewhere and B. Anything sold in a dealers room (regardless of the focus) is 'better' because it's newer, therefore being 'cheaper' by virtue of it being 'better'. Given that the average con-goer will subscribe to one or both of these ideas, sellers stand to make a killing regardless of what they are selling or where they sell it.

I definately prefer the swap meet.  You never know what you are going to find.  I have found several autographed items through the years for cheap prices.  It is basically a garage sale indoors...LOL  minus the garage..LOL The dealers room is a cluster of things and sometimes you can't even get near the booth to see what they are selling!

Oh well :-\ I hope theres more Sailor moon items this year!

To answer that question I find a lot of cool hard to find things in the dealers hall, but some of it is a bit pricy and you can find some of the same stuff online. However I do enjoy the dealers hall and spending my years savings there. At the swap meet you find mostly things that you may already have or that is easily avalible, but its also cheaper and you find really cool stuff there sometimes too.
I think either way, as long as your there you're enjoying it :D

Does the people know that even if you did get a cheaper item, did they remember about the shipping and handling? last time I saw the Item I was looking for its the same price as online but the only difference was that the shipping was the one that makes it double (maybe tripple) on the item that is online. Just out of Curiosity, Has the Dealers hall sold any copic markers? Or is this only for the swap meet?
Title: Re: Dealers Room vs Swap Meet
Post by: Hikaru Kazushime on May 11, 2010, 05:20:32 AM
For me, it went this way:

SWAP MEET: The majority of my loot came from here. Made some incredible finds for insanely good prices. Got tons of manga for around $1, Japanese and English! Picked up loads of cheap posters, artbooks, and some older figures for nearly nothing. Also found a few very rare items, games, and more.

DEALER'S HALL:This is where I picked up some of the modern merch that only the dealer's would have- newer figures that had just been released, an artbook, evangelion bed sheets and...yea, that was all. Just a couple figures and an artbook. O-o didn't realize that was all. lol!

REMEMBER:
The problem with the dealer's hall, is that the dealer's vary in prices. Some sell things like manga for the same price you would buy them at a store, while some give you small discounts the more you buy. The other problem, is that most dealer's raise their prices by a whopping $15 the first day, and reduce it slowly by about $5 each day. By Sunday, everything has been reduced to either it's normal sales price, or has been discounted by a few bucks to make it look like everything has been hugely discounted. It is very wise to study items you may be looking for online before buying from dealers- they have a tendency to sell for more than something may be worth at times. If you can read Japanese, or can at least convert Yen into USD, you can haggle them when you find something amiss with a price. I did this many times last year, and it worked. Just don't pester the dealer's please. If one is firm on a price then either stick with it and buy the item, or thank them and walk away. For me, the dealer's hall is a place to find figures that have recently been released or are soon to be released. Usually you can find whatever is hot online- like recent released by Good Smile Company. But that's mostly it for me. But...you still never know what to find.

If you truly fall in love with an item, it's best to buy it and be happy than to not buy it and wait, and see someone else take it. Don't lie to yourself- OBEY YOUR IMPULSES!!!! O_O
Title: Re: Dealers Room vs Swap Meet

Swap Meet: generally used items, negotiable prices, independent, sometimes rare items, unique

Dealers: mostly brand new items, fixed store prices and taxes, sometimes credit card accepted, standard dealers room stuff you see for sale, has the convention center food court there too

Artist Alley: all are "what I made" items, customizable and commissioned items and work, independent, more fun and interactive

I generally like Swap Meet because I could sell stuff myself instead of being an actual dealer. I also like Artist Alley because I could have a caricature of myself done there, among many other things I can purchase. In the dealers room, though, you see all of the usual stuff you could otherwise find at local anime and import stores, big media stores for DVDs, or online. Prices at the dealers room may be cheaper than retail, but it may be offset from the registration and admission prices.

This year I was dissapointed. There wasn't much that interested me in the swap meet. I got some DVDs partially because they were a good, but not great price...and partially to bless the friend selling it. I DID however get a couple "How To Draw Manga" books for INSANELY cheap! Just $8 for two of them, which I am giving to my niece who loves using them to improve her drawing skills.

This year in the dealer's room is where I found some insanely cheap prices! A Morrigan figure that was like 6" tall in an alternate color for like $15! An EVA Unit 00 Action figure, a more basic model, for $10! It was strange seeing the massive price difference for different characters and models, even at the same dealer!

I usually don't step into the dealer hall until Saturday so I can see what is up in the swap meet first.

The bag seriously made my weekend. I love Mirror's Edge!

The Swap Meet was completely awesome though! The prices were reasonable and I was tempted to buy alot lol I was really happy since I got Naruto the Lost Story for only $1 ;D

I had never been to Swap Meet before, and this year was my first time. I was really excited for it, but I couldn't go Thursday because of school. However, I went on Friday...

and let me tell you, I was extremely satisfied!!! :D I think I went totally fangirly over the cheap prices. Even though these were used products, most of them were in great condition. The owners were very nice and they let you look through some things, and flexible, too. ^_^
Dealers Hall is still okay, but if I look at myself in future years, I'll probably be buying more from Swap Meet. However, Dealers Hall is still appreciated because of the new and shiny goods xD

Well if you're selling and you don't care about people haggling with you...put up a sign. That'll totally attract attention.

I was wanting to get a small like 4" Street Fighter Figurine, and the guy wanted like $15+ for it! I mean for that price I got a 1' tall figurine/action figure thing! INSANE!

Also this one chick was selling this shiny pink necklace...but she wouldn't drop it below like $35, or was that $30. I could find something that nice or better on e-bay for cheaper. Hell Lokisa sells some nice stuff for cheaper!

I'd say swap meet.... I spent 28$ total :D
I was selling and trying to get people to haggle with me but they didn't want to :/
Lots of shy people......
Well if you're selling and you don't care about people haggling with you...put up a sign. That'll totally attract attention.

Which were you most satisfied with this year, the dealers room or the swap meet?

Swap meet by far! Had better prices and more variety in my opinion.

I like the swap meet better cause I could find older items that are available anymore (figures, things from older series or not so popular ones) and I found a cute little eyeglass cloth for under a dollar for my friend (she loved that it had one of her favorite characters in a bunny outfit) that I'm sure would have cost $5 or more if sold in the dealers' room.

But I'm usually in the dealers' room for manga and dvds.  I did get t-shirts this year, tho, two steampunk themed ones and a third one.

And re the Artists' Alley, my friends spent more time in there than I did, except for Monday, and I picked up quite a few nice pieces of art.

There was at least one girl that I know who was selling some brand-name lolita items, so it is possible that the necklace really was worth that much. Of course, you probably could find something of the same quality for cheaper, but ~$30 seems about right for a brand plastic necklace. But then again, I've seen brand bracelets and rings go for more than ~$30, and necklaces go for about twice that.

Just because it's at the swap meet doesn't mean that it'll be cheap (or that you'll know what it is and why it is being sold for that much).

...Though, I did get my copy of Legend of Mana elsewhere for about $35, $15 less than it was being sold for at the swap meet. Just because it is worth a lot doesn't mean you have to sell it for the full price, since it is, after all, a swap meet.

Hello there, this is my second FanimeCon and I didn't get to make it to the swap meet last year. Though I was happy with my purchases in the dealers hall, though I didn't shop much at all.

This year I'm looking for some Yu Yu Hakusho stuff, and a friend said I'd have better luck in the swap meet since the anime is a bit older. (It is from 92 ^^;) Does anyone have experience finding anything from this anime? It's my main goal for the entire weekend, besides meeting more awesome people of course XD

Thanks for any help!

I remember seeing some Dvds and plushies last year but yeah, the swap meet is probably the better place to find stuff like that.

I have a figurine that I'm planning on selling at th Swap Meet. It has a stand and two figures, one of each of the forms of the baby guy (as a baby and as an adult). I'll have to look to make sure I have all the pieces, but I'm willing to sell it to you if you want. :D

I wish I can buy stuff at the Swap Meet but I want to help these convention goers get stuff that they cannot get elsewhere or sell video games.

do the very best you can ^ ^!...
best to bring a clip board and pencil, sometimes people might willing to give you some nice info of what people would like or wish to see.

Good examples would be popular old snes Games, sailor moon. and MAYBE those stuff that was a hit in the 90's

I had to say one awesome moment I had in the Swap Meet was that I saw a woman selling 1 Miku figurine and 1 Rin figurine. She wanted 20 for each and I declined it but then she said "how about 20 for both! "and i bought them both for only 20, still in the box too!

Then when I was in the Dealers room, I found a really awesome Bioshock "Little Sister on Board" (http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/429251_334169999968133_100001254061885_980577_1538658175_n.jpg) sign.
I asked how much and they said it wasnt for sale, it was just for show. I got all sad and said Id buy it if it was.
The guy said If I came back Monday he'd give it to me for free. And he did! ♥
Gotta say both are awesome.

I like them both!

Swap meet, you can get a lot of older stuff for cheap.
Like I got an Akira Toriyama artbook $50 at kinokuniya for... $5!

Arts books in general are cheap over at swap meet.

Also it's the place to buy those nostalgic little trinkets from your childhood.

Dealer's hall, I can get all of the more recent items without the hassle of import prices and shipping!

Got a lot of figuarts and SIC for a great price~

I know this might seem like a dumb question ...
but, Could anyone tell me where the Swap Meet is held?
I've wanted to go check it out in the past, but was never able to find out
where it was located or what time it starts.

If someone could fill me in on this info it would be highly appreciated!

Last year it was in the gaming room.

It hasn't been announced where it will be this year that I am aware of.
