Title: Arcades 2005 Feedback/comments/complaints/etc
Post by: Umi.Ryuuzaki on June 01, 2005, 04:03:33 PM
Even though it is not part of E-gaming, I'll help out and throw in a thread for arcades 2005 feedback. This should help with some planning of next year.

Go to this thread (http://www.fanime.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3326) that is the main FanimeCon 2k5 feedback thread and post there. However, if you want your input about just arcades, either thread is fine, unless i'm horribly wrong and need to be smacked =P

I thought the arcade was well stocked with the typical faves except for a few things:
1. The DDR Extreme machine was placed directly askew from the sky lights and there was mad glare. I informed con ops and they never did anything about it. We move the machine around a couple degrees and con ops turned it off! It was on later, but man.

2. SCII was all the way in the hilton arcade area, as a fighting game I think it should have been with the others on the marriott side. I was playing all alone.

3. The DMV machine was a trick! Hehe, I heard about the version malfunction and I understand why it was changed to an early version.

Aside from that, I was impressed with the skilled players all around and got some good gaming in. I got rocked by Ohsu in T5 though and our SCII game, I demand a rematch. A lesson to you all, dont bet on a money match that takes place at 3am.

1.Yeah, I noticed that at time there was major glare on the DDR machine. That sucks that Con Ops turned it off when it was moved even after you asked them to do it and they didn't do a thing.

2.I agree. It might have gotten more attention that way.

3.Um, dunno what the DMV machine was. :P

The arcade gaming was pretty good. It had games to suit just about everyone's tastes.

I don't think it would have made a difference whether it was 3am or 3pm. Jeff's a beast. He was pissing everyone off using only Nightmare's 3B. I would have loved to played a couple of matches with you though (not necissarily for money).

I dont have too much to complain about because the gaming this year was topnotch, I would just prefer it though next year if certain tournaments *cough*ggxx*cough* didn't get cancelled.

but its okay, i much rather perferred getting pwned by people for free instead of having to pay a 5 dollar entry fee.

Actually, almost every arcade tournament was cancelled because the Golfland guy never showed up to put the machine on free play and stuff. Just putting this out there to let people know that Fanime staff is not to blame.

I loved the selection this year... would like to see Para Para Paradise next year, as I love that game.

I did manage to play in the one tournament that didn't get cancelled, KoF 2003... having played in that, I understand why all the other tourneys did get cancelled.

Hoping that doesn't happen again next year.

Concerning Arcades tournament - that somehow fell into E-Gaming's hands - that means it went to ME. I was dead pissed when I found out what happened and I had to make a decision that was going to suck hardcore, but had to be done. Without releasing too many details, I order them cancelled, because the person (i'm not naming names) who organized it did a number things that were not authorized by the higher up's + me (in some ways).

For next year, I have this feeling a real arcade division will be forum to design these tournaments. I dunno...yet.

It seemed like, from what I could tell, there were some really retarded and nerdy power struggles going on.  I couldn't tell why.

The KoF 2003 tourney was lame in that we had to put our own money in to play.  After that; I can see why the others were cancelled.

I could have went toe to toe with him, its just I was so tired at that time I could barely see straight, I was living off of pure ego from smashing others in the e-gaming room. Oh yeah, I had it in mind to find you Logik and get a good couple of games in for fun, the way I should have left it. 8)

No para para machine  :(

Yeh and that SC2 machine would have gotten way more attention on the other side. But I guess ppl would rather play for free anyway in the console room. Damn those chunky X-box controllers

Yeah, I didn't like playing SC2 on the XBox either. I kept messing up my 8WR moves, most notably Talim's 33_99A. They usually came out as 88_22A instead. :(

I didn't recognize some of the forum goers so I actually might have played against you without even knowing it. I was a shorter Kenshin with the dark red/black wig on. We could always get in some games at a Fanime gathering.

As much as I risk getting maimed next time around or something, I have one general complaint for the gaming.

Yes, DDR Extreme = glare.  That was a bummer, but what I found more offensive was the conops reaction to the machine being moved.  I know it wasn't supposed to be moved, and I recognize the fact that they needed to move it back, but at one point or another my friend and I were waiting for our turn on Extreme when conops arrived and practically assaulted us all verbally.  We got the ugliest glares and the snidest comments about how the machine wasn't supposed to be moved, and if it was again, it'd be shut off permanently, etc etc etc.  Those of us there, I'm sure, were well aware of that, seens to how there were signs up about it- but at the very least, my group was not responsible for it, and it felt like we were being attacked for something we had no part in.  Thinking back, if the majority of my group hadn't wanted to play so badly, we would've removed our tokens and left.  I found it highly offensive.

*cough* With that out of the way: Everything else was great, gamewise.  I thought the setup was quite well done and the expansion over into the Hilton area was also great and helped spread out the crowd a bit.  Good job. :)

Do what most billiard places do - to get a set of pool balls, you gotta leave your ID for the time you play. Once you're done, return the balls and you get your ID back. Other places do it different..but yeah.

the DDR tourney was canceled because someone moved the the machine. i don't know who the hell cancelled the tourney, but i just wanted to say that it was VERY unfair to blame it on the tournament crowd. there was like what? 4,000 people at Fanime? the machine could have been moved by ANY DDR player, not just the tourney participates, so how the hell did the canceller know that the machine was moved by a tourney participate?

I totally agreed! Khai worked his @$$ out to make this tourney happen and many tourney entered. All that event gone to waste from a group accusing them over a small thing.

if you're talking about who i think you're talking about, we've been trying to get the official "OK" for our tournament for months. i never got a reply & Don seems to got the run-around. signs were starting to turn green & then on the day of the tourney, we get all of our paperwork & money confiscated.

the ConOps, who claimed to have heard both sides of the story, has judged this to be a miscommunication problem. i guess they were right after all.

I would like to know if it would be possible to get the game "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed:  Alliance vs. Zaft".  It came out fairly recently in Japan, August I believe.  I had the opportunity to play this game and would really like to see it at Fanime 2k6.  Also, Melty Blood:  Act Cadenza (arcade port of Melty Blood: ReAct) would be a good choice IMHO.

Post by: ZIMdudeAlchemist on October 25, 2005, 10:04:40 AM
I remember last year [Fanime '05] when the *%&damn sunlight from the top windows of the Convention Center was covering the screens of some of the games near the Exibit Hall B [i think, i forgot which rooms was which]. BUT... I have a solution! Next year, we should have those tents over the arcade machines so the screens can have shades so that the sunlight won't bother us. That or use some sort of screen light protector thing [if that acually exists]. Hope that'll happen.

Quote from: "OniCourseMusha"PLEASE PUT THE DDR EXTREME MACHINE TO A SPOT WHERE THERE'LL BE NO GLARE AND PEOPLE WOULDN'T BE COMPLAINING!!

Hey Oni *pokes my supposed male counterpart* Yeah...I know, A LOT of ppl were complainin to me while I was roaming around during my breaks form Staffing...sadly, that is not my dept...all I could tell ppl was to get one of the staffers and/or volunteers who supervises the arcade areas...and sadly enough, nothing really at all was done...so the con goers decided to take things into their own hands and move the machines themselves to avoid the glare...while I understand why they would do that, this causes MANY problems too with the staff...I tried in the most politest way to warn the ppl who moved the machine that they could get in trouble. I'm sad to hear tho that they got an earful from other fellow staffers (I didn't know guys! ^^; sorrie if they yelled at you all but they did have good reason....I did warn you guys that this might happen!) It's dangerous to move those machines w/o consent and proper help if it is to me moved...
1) Those machines/booths can be quite heavy...dun want squashed fanboys n fangirls now O.o We would have less con-goers then and tha's not good ^^; That means less ppl coming to the con l n less possible future potential staff members XD
2) Those machines were more or less ON LOAN from Sunnyvale n MGL...if anything were to happen to those booths...break and/or what not, those establishments would have us staffers heads
3) Going also off #2: If something happened to those machines, MGL n Sunnyvale will most likely not loan us any booths for the arcade again for the con...that would suck for all you con goer's ne? You wouldn't have much to do during your off times...us staff members too! T^T *Oni panics "WHA?! NO MORE DANCEMANIA WHILE I AM ON BREAK?!!" dies*
4)The reason a lot of these booths were placed the way they were is because of the wires in the back...they're placed against the wall so you guys won't trip n fall n get hurt! Nothing worse then some Yuna cosplayer walkin by and one of the machines is turned around...next thing ya know Yuna trips n takes a nose dive, her staff then hitting a Wolfwood cosplayer...then their huge cross prop hits maybe someone cosplaying as a baby Oohmu from Nausicca...which starts a huge rampage down the con center hall...yeah I'm sure you all get the point form here ^^;
5)Too many mishaps and unruliness...then the convention center n hotels we rent the space from might cut us off because there will be too many liabilities...meaning no place to hold the con...if no place could be found to hold the con...then cancellation n what not n the con might cease to happen again T_T That would be quite sad wouldn't it? *knocks on wood* So let's not let things get outta hand alrite? ^^;

In my opinion there should be more cooperation between the congoers and the staff really right? And done in a mature manner please...As much as it pains me I've seen a lot of ppl get hotheaded n start stuff, both congoers and staff alike...Also remember everyone that the con is also put forth BY FELLOW FANS FOR ALL YOU FANS OUT THERE. For congoers: PLEASE be polite and mature and patient. Staff members have already a tiring and difficult enough time trying their best to make the con enjoyable and most of all SAFE for you all. For Staff members: Things were way a lil crazie this year ne? Also for many of the newer staff members (and senior staff of course to as always XD), PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be polite to the congoers and try to reason and settle things in a mature calm manner if there is a problem. If they are being a real problem tho and aren't being mature n reasonable then yeah, go ahead and call security n rovers n escort them out XP I will say I've come across some congoers while working that were just atrociously immature and just won't listen...So yeah, the most important thing is cooperation and listening to each other huh? Fanime WOULD NOT be possible without BOTH the congoers and the staff ^_^

Sure, 10th Style is great (LOL REVIVALS AND NO DOUBT GET LOUD) but there are certain other songs that aren't on there that you can get on the arcade releases.

They run the arcade for several college campuses & they managed the arcade for the Anime Expo in Anaheim. we (a bunch of SJSU students) have been able to run lots of successful tournaments thanks to this company! if you need to talk to a representative, i can hook you up!

Quote from: "KitsuneOniko"4)The reason a lot of these booths were placed the way they were is because of the wires in the back...they're placed against the wall so you guys won't trip n fall n get hurt! Nothing worse then some Yuna cosplayer walkin by and one of the machines is turned around...next thing ya know Yuna trips n takes a nose dive, her staff then hitting a Wolfwood cosplayer...then their huge cross prop hits maybe someone cosplaying as a baby Oohmu from Nausicca...which starts a huge rampage down the con center hall...yeah I'm sure you all get the point form here ^^;
hmm... would it be possible to just tape the wires to the ground?

Quote from: "KitsuneOniko"5)Too many mishaps and unruliness...then the convention center n hotels we rent the space from might cut us off because there will be too many liabilities...meaning no place to hold the con...if no place could be found to hold the con...then cancellation n what not n the con might cease to happen again T_T That would be quite sad wouldn't it? *knocks on wood* So let's not let things get outta hand alrite?
u guys can hold it at my house!!!! :D
~kidding~

Nice points and stuff...you should bring it up with the staff dept. tho that runs the arcades ^^; I would do something bout it myself but that's not the dept. I am in...You going to the Fanime meeting this weekend? (Nov. 13th) input and potential staff always welcome! :D

actually i read on another post...

The DDR was damaged from people moving it...the floor was also damaged...Golfland was not happy...The staff are not the ones responsible for moving it...you are suppose to report to them, then they tell Golfland so they could properly move it...

Then i suggested here that maybe we get Canopy Tents and place them above the games to block the sun...

really? CRAP! well, it was still unfair to blame the tourney people, because any non-tourney DDR player could have took it on his own to move it was well. and wasn't there a note warning that the tournament would be cancelled if the machine was moved? if so, then that would have enough to scare the tourney crowd. i think only a non-tourney person would dare move the machine, because he doesn't have anything to lose.

if the tents idea isn't do-able, then u can also try a different location, like a room with no windows on the ceiling.

That is what must be done. Arcades need to be put in a better location, like they were in 2k3 or 2k4.

I was one of the two organizers for the DDR tournament, and that was one of the issues. I was about to call the qualifiers when the machine was turned off. For people moving it without consent (golfland came up and talked to me personally.) Totally weak. Well, I'm not in charge for this one (1 because I want to compete  and 2 because I'm already running an ITG2 tournament on my b-day) but I will let you know it is in good hands, and we're planning this thing months in advance. Not 2 weeks prior to the con with little information given from con ops.

And that'd be my doing, with assistance from the lovely Milty-san.

We have approximately six more months to finalize and report everything to Con-Ops/Arcade Staff/Golfland -- that's six times as much time to get everything set into place. I'd even like to think that this gig's almost guaranteed, but as we all know, there are a lot of things that can ruin the show.

I'll be updating the DDR thread as time goes by with more tournament info.

I know this is really far fetched, but consideirng what did happen last year...

Is there any plans to put all the arcades into a room like in previous years before 2004/2005, or they're in the main convention areas?

Well, at the time at that tournament, I was on my break and I assumed my staff handled the set up accordingly. Next year for e-gaming, we're gonna try something different on how we do the tournaments...

=P no problem to the eariler post.

As a FYI and a big one, E-Gaming is NOT part of arcades, unless something changed over the last month or so. Not coming off angry, but I would like people to realize we're not the same department.

I have not heard anything about a Arcades dept at all at this time, but, I do know the senior heads (or someone from programming at least) are watching this thread. Keep the thread going and we'll see what happens.

I don't know if anyone posted this yet but:

GOD DO WE NEED PUMP IT UP!

Golfland has a good, working Exceed machine and I think it would be a hit at fanime. There are more people in the world that play pump that ddr (internationally speaking) and it would definitely cut down on wait times to play everything (THREE dance games! ZOMG!) The odds of Fanime getting a IIDX or Pop'n machine is like a billion to one, but it is very likely they could bring this in because it doesn't make as much money at MGL as other games. (That's because nobody wants to drive all the way to MGL to play it)

Title: Arcades Machines - Past and Present....
Post by: PassingTheBuck on February 18, 2006, 06:38:43 AM
I thought I would drop a line and let those on this thread hear from someone who is familiar with the history and the the future is going to be.

We use Golfland, because they can supply use with machines, maybe not always the best machines, but check the web on arcarde machine rents and you will find that most companies want several thousand dollars to rent one for one day.  They are catering to large corporations that can afford it, we can't, therefore we cut a deal with Golfland to supply them to us for a cut of the revenue.

I've made the deals, therefore I will be doing it again this year.

For the past, yes, the machines were placed with the knowledge that at certain times of the day the light would affect it.  However, since no one owns them, but Golfland, I was seriously bent out of shape to have found several individuals moving the machines, because they couldn't play at that moment.  Reminds me of drug users, can't get their fix, they will do whatever is necessary to get it.  In this case they damaged the platform the DDR player dances on, the cables connecting the two units and me.  Golfland wasn't exactly happy about it, I was ready to rip someone's head off and ...  (never mind)...

The latter was the more serious problem, because I wanted to eject the two people catch doing it.  Cooler heads previeled.  Clearly the idea of property ownership didn't enter their minds, only getting their 'crack' fix was more important.

As for the future, we are moving all the arcade machines in to Exhibit Hall #3, along with the guys from E-Gaming.  There are several good reasons for this, one being that there is no way for the sun to get in the way.  Second is that we can play the machine in a three sides box, allowing an open area for chairs and tables for others to watch.  Three, we can control the area better, keeping those who don't have a badge from using them.  Four, there will be a stand bar open, with water and sodas, for your usage.  Fifth, between arcade and E-Gaming, you guys can make as much noise as you would like and it wouldn't matter.

Did I ever mention I love you, Craige? <3

All figures of speech outside, when I found out how badly the glare was on the Extreme machine, I just went to the 4thPLUS cab and the ITG stand over at RedOctane's booth. There literally was no excuse for moving the machine, because there was more than one way to obtain the 'crack'. So what if you're short some songs? 4th still has plenty -- and plenty that Extreme doesn't have, either!

To be honest, I was indeed glad that I was able to play on the Extreme after it had moved, being the clueless dude that I was, but once you think about it...

wow, it's nice to know that the arcade crowd isn't getting ignored. thanX a bunch! everything should work out. i'm really looking forward to Fanime now.

btw, i believe that OnCampus Entertainment can provide you with the same deal. http://www.ocearcades.com/ServicesSetup.asp
has any of you guys ever bothered to at least talk to this company. i don't work for them or anything. the reason that i keep pushing for this company is because they have been very co-operative with SJSU students, helping us run arcade tournaments every semester.

if any of you guys would like to see an example of how an arcade tournament is suppose to be run, come to SJSU on April 15th. we're running a tournament on that day for 6 different games. for more info, go to http://www.geocities.com/UtopianImp/Tournament/

A representative of OnCampus Entertainment (http://www.ocearcades.com/) will also be there if anyone needs to speak with him.

Okay since Fanime always gets their DM&GF machines from SVGL why dont the people just whip out a few stools? And BTW last year the DM machine broke down like hell so they had to go back a version thats why. But now they got GF&DM V2 WITH SESSION!!  so its all good...Just hope for one thing...That they get the bass peddle fixed by Fanime or else there is going to be a riot =3 Then Im going to come in with a spring place it under the peddle then everyone is going to be happy.  Well thats my plan if the bastards at SVGL dont get it fixed in time.
