Well, due to the very apparent success of
the Black and White Ball, by popular demand, will be back in 2009! I would like to thank everyone who attended in 2008 and will be working very hard to make sure that 2009 is just as fun as 2008 was. This coming year, we may see some changes to the ball however. As many of you noticed, the room was packed again for the vast majority of the Ball. In an effort to increase the amount of space dancers have on the floor, we will be keeping the dress code as it seemed to go over well and we will implement line control again as needed. We may also be moving to a bigger room but nothing is final yet.
Ok. Now that the boring stuff is out of the way,
I will be taking song requests prior to the Ball, but will not be able to take them at the time of the event. If you would like to request a song, please post here and email me at
[email protected]. Additionally, I can't guarantee that all requests will be played. Songs will have to be ballroom dancable. If you can provide an mp3 of the song you would like to request, that will guarantee that at least you have a shot at getting it played. I may post the playlist before the con - or not. I will have to see how much time I have :P Last year, my playlist wasn't final until only a few hours before the Ball.
Lastly, I am curious how people liked the lessons that were offered in 2008. We are looking at various styles for 2009 and I would like to know what you would be interested in learning. If you would like to learn a specific type of ballroom dancing, speak up! This event is, like the convention, by fans for fans so I would like any feedback and/or suggestions on ways to make this event even better.
UPDATE: 3.14159265358979323846...
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! We have our room and I can now announce where it is! Are you ready? We are going to be in the Fairmont's Regency Ballroom this year! This place is gorgeous and will take the ball to a new height. For everyone who complained about the room not being big enough and everyone who waited in line the last two years, THANK YOU! You wanted a bigger room, you got it and it's beautiful to boot! Let's see if we can get enough people this year to have a line again (secretly likes having a long line to get in to his event - with the room full of course)!
I loved the B&W ball and stayed for the entire thing, save water breaks, which leads me to a question.
If you have a capacity check and someone leaves just for something like water, would there be an easy way to get back in, or would that person have to wait around outside until they can get back in? Hopefully you can scare a room with a water fountain and/or put a few of those water dispensers inside of the room. We don't want anyone fainting from the heat, though with a larger room and/or fewer people, that would cut down on some of the heat.
The songs last year wer enot at all what I expected from the ball, but it was a good thing. I liked the choice of music. However, I noticed that there was a lacking of songs from Asian sources. Either it was just me not knowing the songs, or there was a lack of Asian songs. Basically, I would like more of the jazzier selections to be of Asian origin. Two SEAT BELTS songs were played (unless there were others when I was taking a short break outside), but I was dissapointed in going with the very sterotypical Tank! and Waltz for Zizi. I would like more Cowboy Bebop music, but I would like the good stuff. Rush, Autumn in Ganymede, Clutch, etc. None of those songs that have been played to death! Also, from the selection I heard last year, the band JiLL-Decoy association would fit in pretty well with the selection, I will email you with more information on them if you would like, but their webpage can be found here (http://www.jilldecoy.com). I can provide you with quite a few tracks if you would like. Some of their songs would certainly be better for the regular dance, but I can help you in choosing some songs for the ball over email if you are intrested. Give me time to think, and I'm sure I'l think of more requests. Sorry that not too many are typical 'ballroom' type music, but mostly based off of last year's selections.
I personally missed the lessons last year (they were at the same time as the karaoke contest), and I cannot dance. At all. I would love to do the lessons next year. I think that there need to be multiple lessons sessions (a few for beginners, a couple for intermediate dancers, and one for people that can already dance well and want something more advanced, of course, if there are resources and time), so that people who are busy during the lessons can still catch a session. If possible, timing them so that people can 'move up' in the ranks from begginer to intermediate or intermediate to advanced, but still having them scattered. (So not having the intermediate or advanced lessons first and then all the beginner lessons, instead opting for a staggared set up.) I would love to learn diffrent types of dancing as well, since I really do know nothing about how to dance.
If you guys enforce a dress code, I will need a new outfit, becuase my costume last year, though beautiful and perfect for a black and white ball, was very impractical because of a strapless top and plenty of trailing chiffon. I think that a dress code is a good idea to help keep the theme going, but make it a 'looser' dress code, so that more people can participate, they just need to be in something semi-fancy, prefferably black and white, or a cosplay.
The ball last year was probably the highlight of my trip last year, and I cannot wait to see it return! :D
I didn't make it to the ball or the ballroom lessons this year, but I request Waltz for the Moon from Final Fantasy VIII, please. If that wasn't on last year's songlist, I'm surprised and disappointed. ;D
The dress code is a good idea, but I think very light and very dark colored costumes should be allowed, for flexibility. Also, separating lessons into beginning, intermediate, and advanced would be great--I already know how to waltz, and it would be a bit pointless to learn the box step again.
The B&W ball was the surprise hit for me in 07. The lessons were essential, even with the lessons I had two left feet, so to say. I will most definatly attend again.
Also I'm guessing since the title has been changed to Black and White Ball you are moving away from the masquerade theme? (I think there were like 5 people besides me wearing masks...)
I am definitely gonna take the ballroom dancing lesson bringing along gf! I really enjoyed it! It felt like how I used to remember formal dress up back in high school.

One of those was me, but I do not reccomend wearing a mask on a stick for dancing, it's a pain to hold.
I rather liked the masquerade theme last year, but the name confused a lot of people and they couldn't figure out the diffrence between the "masquerade ball" and the "masquerade", the cosplay competition.

Mine was a mask I could wear (I was the guy with the silver half-crescent moon mask). It was fun, but got a little sweaty. Garnered me a few compliments though! :D
I loved the ball, as did my G/F.
im not sure the regulating of people would go over well, but dress code should certainly be enforced=)
oh! and for requests
waltz for zizi- was magic.
small prayer- the fruits basket ending theme.
i'll look for more tho ^^;;
If ever you do implement a flexible dress code, i'd appreciate it if it was announced months before Fanime begins ^__^
oh oh! I forgot how to dance them classic dances. I had them during high school tho, the waltz and the cha-cha, how about recapping it for me? I'd love to have some lessons again, i do very well know I had bad grades for that ^__^ Or how about for those in the bay-area, one weekend practice before Fanime begins?
Those coming from different States would sound nice if they group up and find someone to teach them how to dance too a week or weekend before the convention.
btw, I have never attended the B&W Ball 2007 since it was my first Fanime and I was just shy to pop my face out of nowhere in unfamiliar ground, hopefully ill try to attend 2008 and be prepared for all the events that overwhelmed me this year :D

please do come this year. and to anyone who's never been before, don't worry. you wont be alone and while this isn't a mixer or anything, you never know who you might meet. maybe you'll make a new friend, maybe you'll see one of the guest of honor and get a chance to talk to them or maybe you'll meet the love of your life and find the person you're going to marry and live out the rest of your life with. or not. who knows who you'll meet. in any case, just come.

so a little update for you all. we are looking at moving the dance and ball to the J. right now, that is the plan anyway. unfortunately, it hinges on nailing down venues for things like music fest and the masquerade. until those are decided, the location will be up in the air. the dress code seems to be appealing to people so here you go.
the ball is a formal event. it is preferred that you wear fromal attire. women, this means a nice, long dress, and men, a suit. alternately, a costume that could be considered formal would be acceptable (lolita etc.). we will again be offering a coat check system which, admittedly, worked last year but could be improved.
well, that's all for now. keep checking back as i will be posting more details as they become available.

YAY! I'm so glad to hear this now! It's so much easier to find a formal type dress during this season. I'm not a teenager, and the dresses out near fanime time are Prom dresses...I look like an idiot in a prom dress.
It'll be nice to have a chance to dress formal. The only clarification I'd need is will you allow a coctail dress? They are not floor length, but usally covers the knee. They are much more appropriate for my age then a full gown, but a gown can be purchased if I must. Please let me know. :D

see above :P
I personally think prom dresses look silly on anyone. ;P
Hopefully the dress code will not be strict enough to allow me to wear my prom dress, though, which is very red. (I made it, so it is nothing like all the other prom dresses out there.) Otherwise I'd have to show up in an extremly imparactical outfit (like last year) or a lolita outfit.
I can make my mask black and white, if nothing else.

If I'm wearing a cosplay that is formal and white, will I be allowed in if it's above the knee? Long dresses don't exactly flatter me since I'm short, and I've already decided to wear this to the con anyway, so it would be nice not to have to add another item to my list of things to bring.
Dress in question:

Gah, I tried to read through all the posts before getting my suggestion just in case of risking re-stating an idea, but then I realized it's way too late at night for me to be reading a bunch of stuff. So, sorry.
First, I'd suggest that opening Sailor Moon theme, I'll get the artist ASAP, but yeah, that's my suggestion for the song. It really isn't a joke, because honestly, one of my friends had it as her song when her and her friends performed as a group for something or other (I can't remember what), and it was a nice change of pace.
Oh, if you want, you could always hand out masks at the entrance of wherever the ball is going to be held. That'd ensure that people wore them. It would also get rid of those not wearing them, unless they had reason. This would free up room (in theory), and serve to better enforce the unwritten rules of the Black and White Balls.
Think of Me- Phantom of the Opera
that'll be a nice one.
I'm wearing my mask, black jacket, and a United Kingdom Tie *it's freaky looking*
I'm definitely gonna go!!! xD
I went last year and enjoyed it, and I'm going again this year. I hope there's more room, because it's hard to dance when it's really crowded. A bigger room and actually enforcing the dress code would be really nice.
I LOVED IT last year!!!!!!! ;D it was loads of fun!!! But if you could get more room that would be Great! I actally didn't take leasons at fanime because I have been taking leasons for over a year now! ;) I LOVE TO DANCE!!!!!!
Just wondering about the dress code; last year I wore a vinyl ballgown to go as a formal version of Etna from Disgaea, would that still be ok, or would I need to choose something fancier?
OH! There's going to be a ball? o.0 This is going to be my first year going to the Fanime Con so I just popped in to have a look. I don't really like dresses though... hm... Dress huh?.... I was planning on wearing a shinigami outfit to the Con... Does a Chinese dress work?... ??? :) :D
Technically a shinigami uniform is black and white... ;D
lol Will it work because I also will be wearing one. XD
This actually sounds pretty fun. ^o^
It's my first Fanime and such so I may go.
Problem is, I don't have a full length dress. :/
Do i need to wear a suit? or can I wear my FMA outfit o.o
Last year I wore a white button up dress shirt (with the cuffs un-done and furled up), black dress pants, black dress shoes, and a silver masque. I'd say I was more dressed up than half of the people there.
I just want to mention my support of having a dress code. Though it should probably be a little lenient for cosplay. Personally, I think AWA's dress code is pretty good (http://www.awa-con.com/index.php?page=awa_ball)

That dress code seems a little too strict for my tastes. Yes, we want to enforce the formality of the event, but we also don't want to make it too formal as a requirement. It is at an anime convention, keep in mind, so the dress code should probably be fairly loose.
Song suggestions:
"Brand New Breeze" - Kanon (This was the opening to "Kininro no Coruda ~Primo Passo~" and is a lovely semi-classical piece, I can offer a high quality mp3 if one is required)
"Shinjitsu no Uta" - Do As Infinity (it was an Inuyasha opening... closing... something. But it's a lovely song anyway.)
Also, I'll be another vote in favor of a dress code, it's more fun for all involved when everyone has put forth at least a little effort to really want to be there. ^^
I'm going to wear my Union Jack (Flag of the UK) Tie along with my costume.
Does this guy counts???i really would like to cosplay as him ^ ^!!!!

I didn't go to this last year (in fact, I didn't even know about it. It was my first fanime). What day is it going to be on? And starting like, in the early evening or late evening?
Last year it was held Saturday at 8pm.
cool, thanks ^^
actually, it was saturday at 7... this year, well, we aren't quite sure yet, but it will not the same day as the masquerade.
I think that having it Saturday again would be the best, but if there are no room openings, too bad. :/
Agreed. Saturday night is the day to do many things plus gives us more "Prom" or "winter formal" feel.
I'm hoping I get a nice black outfit hoping it fits me.
And btw, I'm taking Ballroom dancing class at my community college ;D So I'll be checking out the dance lesson and probably can teach you the basic of cha cha cha.
I have a question, and from reading the whole thread I am still unsure about it... So, if a cosplay is black and white, you can attend, as long as it is somewhat formal, correct? Well, would an arrancar uniform (Bleach) be acceptable, or no...?
I don't really plan on going myself (I don't dance), but my friend may need to know this.
You know what I think? I think Black and White Ball should give me something to put on the website. :)
i'm working on it >.<
this might be a very dumb question but tuxedo mask should be alright correct?
should be
I missed the ball last year unfortunately, so I am really glad it's going to be back this year! ;D I've taken ballroom lessons, actually, but a refresher course might be fun...especially if it gives people an extra chance to mingle and make friends. Or even pick up some dance partners for the night. ;)
Oh shit. I guess now I have to figure out what the hell to wear. :-\
I am definitely planning on going! Uh....I'll be going in a white suit if I can get it in time. If not, I have some nice black clothes.
I loved the Black and White last year, but the room really was too small. It got hot in there very quickly, and the only room to dance was in the back corner to one side of the stage--just close enough to the speakers to deafen yourself. :D I was glad I went as Black A.C. instead of White A.C., or I'd have had to change costumes immediately afterwards.
Also, very few people attended the dance lessons, due to scheduling. Is it possible to get several times scheduled? Most people went Rave in there because they didn't know how else to do it.
That said... I LOVED IT! ;D
This is my first Fanime, and going to be my first 'formal' dance since my Prom (back in '00, I'm old lol). This is the dress I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=360017354325&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=023
And I'm going to accessorize it, Clamp-Style. XD
Maybe I should consider going to this ball, it seems like it will be fun.
The moment I saw this thread, I HAD to register to participate. XD
I don't normally do much more than lurk around these sorts of things, but I LOVE ballroom dancing, and when I saw that Fanime was having a ball, like AX did previously, I was really excited. We found out about it last minute, and went shopping just so we would have the proper attire to attend. But when we got there...
Well, to say the least, we were all disappointed.
Firstly, the room was WAY too small, and poorly ventilated. (I think someone else mentioned this.) We could hardly breathe, let alone DANCE. We had to leave before we passed out. I understand that this may be because the popularity of such a ball was underestimated, so I hope this is remedied this year.
Secondly, there appeared to be NO dress code whatsoever. We saw lots of girls in GORGEOUS dresses of all kinds coming into the room all dolled up, only to look around the dance and realize that they needn't have bothered.
Thirdly, there was almost (I say "almost" only because I wasn't there the entire time, so I'll assume there must have been SOME) no ballroom music. There was only "dance" music. I don't mind a mix of current anime theme songs or pop songs that have waltz or swing beats to them, but there IS a whole other dance for that sort of music.
So basically, the Black and White Ball, while obviously a successful event, was not a BALL. It was a DANCE. I really liked the description of AWA's Ball, and I strongly urge the FanimeCon staff and organizers to look this over. Many of its rules should be put into effect.
People come to a "ball" because they want to feel elegant and grown-up. They want the chance to wear formal clothing and mingle with others who share their dream of living in another, more beautiful world, if only for a little while. Please, PLEASE, make the Black and White Ball a BALL, and not just another rave or middle-school dance.
Every single one of us will appreciate the wonderful pictures and cherished memories that will come from it.
I'd love to go to this.
And a stupid question - I keep reading that people are registering for individual events... does this mean I have to register to go to everything?... or does my Con badge get me into everything. New to Fanime so that's throwing me a little bit. ???

You should go in when u register to fanime.
when you register for fanime, you are granted access to all fanime events however, there is limited space at many of these events so it pays to get there early sometimes. also, there are some events (like the masquerade) that you have to register to participate in in advance. you do not need to register for the event itself to watch, but you do need a fanime badge.
Question: The dress I was thinking of wear is of Lolita style, but it is shorter than knee-length.
May I wear this? I have a back-up just in case, but I am most anxious to wear my first choice.
the main goal of knee length is so that if you bend over, you don't reveal anything you wouldn't want to reveal - this becomes especially important when swing dancing if you are doing over the back flips etc.

Thank you very much! >.<

the masquerade is on saturday because we are having an-cafe coming to the con and they will be performing on sunday. the ball, so as not to conflict with the masquerade, will be sunday. the masquerade page and posts are in the process of being updated.
The masquerade is on Saturday? How will this work? o___o;;

If there is one song that has to happen, is probably one of the greatest ending songs of anime. "Yuria.. Eien ni" The first ending of Hokuto no Ken.

Uh, you do realize this is a ball not a dance, right? Even though it did devolve in to a dance last year, I do believe the intent was for this to be a formal ball.
Well to let you all know when I put in that request I think *not 100% sure* that is was allowed.
What about a Badtz-Maru costume with a coat? :P
ok, so now when are the dance lessons going to be then? @_@ *confused because of change of date*
Aoi Might Be Going Myself Or Try To Find A Date At The Con
XPPP
I think the best way to counteract with capacity issues is to enforce the dress code. It worked for Anime Central's ballroom dance.
Might Not Make It If An Cafe' Concert At The Same Time ><
Working on my costume as we speak. I'm so looking forward to this. I had a blast last year, and it made me all the more excited for this year's ball. The few things that kinda sucked was poor ventilation (couldn't be helped to a degree) and I had to leave early because I was a finalist in the karaoke contest. *shrug* We'll see what happens this year!
Don't know if I'll have a mask like last year, but I'm still with the black and white theme. Yays, so excited, especially since it won't interfere with the Masq. That would've been awful.
I love dancing to waltz...I am just a novice but I love it and hope I can do it this year.
I'd like to say that just because a song says 'waltz' in the name, it doesn't mean it's a waltz. Also, the song 'Blue' by Effiel whatever the heck, is a good song for the Chacha and Single Lindy Swing. Shindemo Boogie Woogie by Miyavi is a good song for the Swing too, if a little fast. Le Tango de Roxanne from Moulin Rouge is a good tango song and it's fairly slow.
But I do have a question about which waltz is being taught, the progressive or the box step?
we will have the lesson info posted soon, but for now, those dances that will be taught will cover the basics. we will have to see about more advanced stuff. it might happen if there's time.
just a question would a black and white yukata be apropriate its like black on the left and white on the right just curiosue

ok cool cause even though i have tuxedo mask costume that might just be more comfortable and alot less hot ^_^
Would dress pants and a dress shirt be fine for females? I absolutly despise dresses, skirts, and the like and have never worn one by choice. The only time I have is when my grandmother forced me into them when I was five, and I'd rather not repeat that experience >>;
as long as you fall within the guidelines for either the gentlemen or ladies or cosplayers, you should be fine. i do believe that was mentioned in the guidelines.

I agree, that was a great song to waltz to..hopefully I will be able to attend the lessons this year..but if not..no biggie..there is always the next.
Out of curiosity I know the theme is black and white but what about a bright red dress? I have a red leopard print dress that is honestly the most comfortable of all my formal dresses (and not to mention perfect for a gussied up Judy Nails). Aside from the color it fits all the other regulations, will it be ok?

The theme is black and white, yes, but as long as it's formal or semi-formal, the color shouldn't matter. So if you want to show up in that, go right ahead and have fun :3
I'll be coming, I got a nice dress shirt and pants to wear.
Are ties and jackets optional just so long as you wear nice dress clothes?
jackets and ties are optional, but they are encouraged.
Guys, girls love men in fine dress clothes, complete with coat and tie, if your outfit lets you. Girls love a sharp-dressed, suave-looking man. ;)
Oh I want to request a song! I request for "Still Doll" by Kanon Wakeshima. It's a new song and it shows in the new anime Vampire Knight as the ending.
Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rkqcx6KfAA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rkqcx6KfAA)
VK Ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRMbGIdc4wo&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRMbGIdc4wo&feature=related)
I think this would fit the Black and White theme on the creepiness level of the song(Watch VK ending). It's a song that you could probably waltz to.
Hm, I'm going to go to this ^_^ In my chii butterfly dress(Chobits) if Eugene approves it. If I can not go in that, I'm just going in Akito in a wedding dress(Air Gear). Oh and does anyone mind if I request a song as well? I was wondering if they can play "Be your Girl" by Chieko Kawabe. It's the ending song from Elfen Lied. :3
When does it start again?

I'm not.
I once said " If a couple reenacts the waltz seen form FF8 at a ball I'm going to walk over there and slap them both. Yea, it was kind of cute the flirts time, but I have seen it at EVERY con dance I have been to.
I've been to...17 cons. Two dances a night..+ the waltz. Thats...ah I lost count, A LOT.
" Please, PLEASE let it die, or I may just have to create an 'every time you recreant the watlz scene from FF8 god kills a kitten" - advertisement.
On that note, do you we know yet, if people will be able to come in after the dance starts? A friend of mine wants to play in the chess game which ends right at seven but he has to change.
the doors to the dance will remain open to anyone who wants to attend but they will not be allowed inside if they do not meet the dress code. speaking of dress code, if you have questions about an outfit you wish to wear to the ball, please, PLEASE come to one of the lessons with the outfit and ask. the worst we can say is no and who knows, we might just say ok.
If I attend, I'm planning to wear Sun Mi (Wonder Girls)'s dress (http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/79/1199524086iu9ta8.jpg) from their Music Core Concert dance battle with a cocktail dress, so it'll be above the knee. Is that okay? .-.;;
it's looks close enough i think from the picture. but if you're worried, come ask at the con.
All I can say is I'm glad Fanime is enforcing a dress code for the ballroom dance. It just makes everything look nicer. ^^
I was at ACen's ballroom dance last week. Everyone present was dressed to impress. It was lovely.
Let me be the first to say the Black and White Ball was -awesome-.
Many, many thanks to the crew who set up the ball. It took a lot of coordination to set it up, keep the crowds moving and to set up all those dance classes; needless to say, they came in handy and were fun too!
The line was shocking - it went out the door, down the hall, and to the front door of the dealer's room, and it stayed that way for most of the night. The B&W crew did a commendable job trying to accommodate both the dancers and the fire department, and I'm sure they're planning for a bigger venue already. The room wasn't as stuffy as I thought it would be, though it's hard to tell while dancing in a congo line wearing a full-on alchemist's uniform.
Depending on the logistics, is it possible for more than one B&W ball?
I agree with the above post; the dress code and its enforcement is fine as is. It's a shame that some people have to be turned away for wearing sneakers, too short miniskirts, or un-collared shirts, but the B&W ball is getting to the point where people are planning a separate outfit or cosplay for it.
Last year was alright...I personally think that this year was better with the exception of the dress code. It screwed a lot of people up. It also surprised me that there were no bag checks this year. It was interesting.
I enjoyed it alot than the one last year. I think the dress code is fine as it is since last year, it didn't feel so formal.
What about "Butou" from Fullmetal Alchemist? :D That's one of my favorite scenes and songs, and it most fits witht the theme of a Ball

if you happen to have it as an mp3, can you please send it to
[email protected] as i don't necessarily have it. i will be making a new thread for 2k9 shortly but i'm always taking suggestions for music.
I found this dress that I REALLY want to wear to the black and white ball. I'm so excited for this! My boyfriend even said that he would learn the dances with me.
My profile pic is the one I want. (No, it's not me)
At Fanime 08, I got in line for the dance about 45 minutes before the doors opened and was already the 100th person in line (or so it seemed...) I stayed for half the dance, then left so that someone else still waiting in line could have my spot. If there hadn't been a line, I would have stayed until closing.
My comments, undoubtedly biased:
1. In my opinion, the "Ball" is more about the formality of the event than the music and dances done. It's somewhat unlikely that many of the attendees will know the Viennese Waltz anyways.
2. Another vote for dress code. Of course, since I own two tuxedos, you can guess that I will always vote for formal dress. ;) For many of the attendees, I would guess this was/will be the only formal event they went to/go to this year.
3. And speaking of dress code, how about consistent enforcement? Other posters have mentioned people being turned away for wearing sneakers or short skirts, yet there were people inside in flip-flops or tee-shirts.
4. Don't bother trying to schedule "intermediate" or "advanced" dance lessons. Anyone who's already at that level isn't coming to Fanime to take a dance class. Recruit them to teach beginner classes instead.
5. Please try to schedule at least two beginner lessons for each dance, to accommodate people's schedules. Plus, there's nothing wrong with people taking the same class twice
6. Swing is King; it's easy to learn and easy to do. Waltz is the most useful dance to know, but is harder to learn at first because you also have to move.
The way I see it, Fanime (or any convention) is about like-minded people coming together to have fun. But even amongst like-minded people, there are lots of subgroups: The Naruto people. The Pokemon People. The Bleach People. The weepy Key people. The Card players. The Cosplayers. &c. The Black & White Ball is, IMHO, for the subgroup of people who want to dress up in formal clothing and dance for a few hours. It's doesn't have to be for everyone.
Saying "you should have less dress code and play more 80's hair-metal so I could have fun" is kind of like saying "Yaoi would be good if only it had a point. And less homosexuality."
Just my two cents before taxes...
I think I'll go this year. I would have gone last, but I had no date. Well I could have gone with my best friend, but she didn't have anything dress code appropriate. But next year I'll definitely have her bring something so we can go together.
I'll most def go!
But, does your hair have to be a dull color because my hair is pretty bright D:>
and I wanted to request the song(although it's short) 'Waltz Katzen Blut' from 'The Cat Returns' soundtrack.
Here are some more requests
-'Umi No Mieru Machi' from 'Kiki's Delivery Service' Soundtrack
-'Urusura No Koya He' from 'Kiki's Delivery Service' Soundtrack
-'Reprise' from 'Spirited Away' Soundtrack
-'Kaze No Toorimichi (Instrumental)' from 'My Neighbor Totoro' Soundtrack
-'Yureru Kokoro' from 'Nabari No Ou' Soundtrack
-'Atatakai Hizashi no Naka de' from 'Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei' Soundtrack
-'Madobe no Shoujo' from 'Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei' Soundtrack
Any song requests should accompany music as my library isn't extensive.
The ball sounds like it would be waaaaaaay fun. I'll have to go stag though :D
I planned on attending last year, but the ball conflicted with AnCafe. Personally I think that reflected poor planning. But the main point of my post is wanting to know if the Street Hustle or Tango was taught, I really like those dances and Street hustle isn't much different from the jitterbug.
neither were taught last year, but we can look into them for this coming year.

Not to be rude, but Naruto cosplayers have always been jerks to me. So I'm not interested. Sorry.
well not all of them are rude for example: um er uh... (me) and my other Naruto friends
Haha, I'll join in !
Calling all "Naruto" fans here is a second chance at another gathering but this time its at the "Black and White Ball." this time its a formal Naruto cosplay. If interested contact me :D
anyone wearing code geass cosplays? I'll be there as C.C. wearing the giant black dress from the code geass art book
CC! *glomps*
I'm a little confused on the dress code since this is my first time at Fanime. Do I have this right: You are allowed to wear cosplay of any color? You are allowed to wear formal dresses and suits as long as they are black and white?
suit's and dresses may be any color so long as the outfit is formal. the same goes for cosplay.
Isn't the point of a black and white ball to be in black and white though? otherwise it's not a black and white ball and the idea has just turned from "the second annual black and white ball" to "the first annual Fanime Formal".
Although I have to admit I was about to ask about the colors black, cream, and off-white. I have a dress that's layered with these colors in the underlay.
the black and white in a black and white ball is not a reference to the color scheme of the event, but rather in reference to the formality of the event. ideally, one would wear rather formal attire to such an event - preferably a tuxedo or ball gown. the scale of formality goes as follows:
casual
informal
semi-formal
formal
black tie
white tie
while ideally people would come to this event in either black or white tie attire, we are dropping the dress code requirement to be formal so more people can attend.
monkey, in regards to your dress, that should be absolutely fine.
Thank you for the explanation! I have just the thing!
-Note, if you do not want to hear a sob story of mine... nad be so kind to answer my question... just skip to the paragraph that starts with "This year"
Well i have kinda since 2006 (my first year) wanted to go to the Black and White Ball... so here are my "problems" if you will call it that... for not having gone in the past;
-year 1- my gf was not up to going...
-year 2- i was not in a relationship and was struggling with my sexuality(blah sob story booo hoooo :'()
This year one of my best friends asked me to go... now i am gay and at Anime Conventions i cross-play. and my question is... Does the Black and White Ball accept cross cros-players? Because I am going in formal ware, I have a black dress, black and white stripe stockings and black heels... all very formal... I just wanted to know if they will mind gender benders or not... if not i will be sad :'(
To my knowledge, they shouldn't. As long as you meet the dress codes.
Hehe, I remember dancing with a cross-player. Good times, good times...
WOOT! So gonna be there. It's an opportunity to wear my GIANT FLOOR LENGTH BLACK AND PINK DRESS.
It'll be good times. Hopefully there's enough space for everyone. I also agree with the staggering of lessons. Hopefully (once the threads open up) I'm going to be in the Artist Alley for most of the time, so I've got to be able to find time to break away for the event. <3 :)
Well technically I'll be going as a guy whos going as a girl to the ball.... I might buy a mask XD
you better be there oniko or i'll be sad. hello_kitty_boy, cross-play is fine so long as the outfit is formal.
course, I already have my badge and hotel
Are you guys sure you even need to worry about more people being able to attend? Last time the line was huuuge and it was packed inside as well. I'd say keep the dress code moderately stricts, it's more fun that way
I have a question. When do you think the B&W Ball will be held. Last year it was held on Sunday. Will it be on Sunday this year as well?
We haven't quite announced it yet.
Keep watching for an official statement.
On another note, we do have a bigger room this year.
We are still working on details, but expect it to be Sunday evening again with times tbd. Where is going to be a surprise and we will announce that as soon as the details are worked out.
Its good to hear that it might be in a bigger room. Last year it was really packed and the line was huge.

Really looking forward to this one again!
Are we allowed to bring bottle water?
yes. bottled water is fine. just bear in mind that there wont be much room for setting things down so plan accordingly.
I wouldn't recommend bring much with you if you are planning on staying and dancing for a while because of the limited space to set things down/no way to secure your belongings.
Last year I used the little plastic pouch that came with my badge to hold my cell phone, my lipstick, and a small mirror, and that worked perfectly fine. I wouldn't try to bring much unless you can keep it on your person.
@boots01 and Nina Star 9, thanks for the info XD It's my first time attending and I'm heat sensitive. I hope the staff provide lots of water in the dance floor ~~
I was not able to go last year due to the omigosh long line
c: im thinking of bringing a clutch with me if I go hmmm Im also going to need a dance partner as well x)
I wanted to go last year, but the long-ass line......
This year, I'm going damnit; I'm friggin' going, and I'm dancin'.
uhh this might sound dumb or smt... but uh....
Do you have to waltz or smt? Also, the B&W ball is a social thing right?
the bw ball is a social event featuring ballroom dance music from various genres including anime and video games.
I would love to see some more dance classes this year. Those were very fun. Though only one of the instuctors seemed to really know how to teach it. The other I felt just taught people how to fake it. I had to correct a lot of my partners when I danced with them.
I am going to go this year too. I may not have a partner, but oh well! At least I'll have a prettiful dress. X3
What day is the ball going to be held? and how do we get in?
the bw ball will be on sunday evening (6ish) at the fairmont hotel in the regency ball room.

Well I'm gonna be assisting for the Ballroom Lesson mostly towards EC Swing and Waltz. I can be a help towards people who doesn't know what to do and I can help. Looking forward towards everyone there!
Oh geez, looked it up on the website & it can fit 900 people... It looks quite promising~

Yes, they will be in separate locations though the lessons will still be in the J (where they were last year).
Is there going to be a place to check in personal belongings such as jackets and purses?
no. like last year, we will not have a coat check for multiple reasons. this being the case, we recommend not bringing props with you.
If this hasn't been brought up yet, the schedule on BWB's main Fanime page says a few of the dance lessons are at 1am... o.0?
I'll be assisting East Coast Swing! And if there are any of you that know how to do some lindy let me know Cause I can lindy!
