Why was this even a thing at Fanimecon? It has absolutely nothing to do with anime, sci-fi, fantasy, video games, or anything else even remotely related to nerd culture.

The connection is by way of combat and martial arts, which is common in the action anime, manga, comics, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming we enjoy.

Then why is it women-only?

Solution:

1) wear cosplay
2) do whatever you would do if you were not in cosplay

Problem solved.

99% of homeless people are harmless. Maybe you could buy them some of those hot dogs?

To address some of your attempted counterpoints:

1. I just started a new job a few days before the convention, and paychecks go out on Fridays. My choices were to buy the pass on-site or not at all.

2. I've paid for 4-day passes almost every year since I first started attending. This year, I just wanted to pop in, watch the opening ceremonies, take a few pictures of any particularly amazing new cosplays, maybe hand out some business cards, and then head back to work (Memorial Day weekend is a very busy time for pool supply stores and I had to beg my boss to even give me ONE day off). But I couldn't even do that because the Opening Ceremonies were on the upper floor. Your implication that I just want everything for free is unfounded and reveals you to be illiterate, judgmental assholes.

3. Yes, a 42% price increase in 7 years is unreasonable. Like I said, this is not Venezuela.

4. "But in the grand scheme of things what is sixty dollars?" - it's what the price of same-day registration should be for a 4-day pass, like it was only a few years go.

5. Lying bout the history of pass price increases doesn't do any favors for one's credibility, especially when some of us like to keep our old paperwork and can fact-check all of this stuff.

Is OP afraid that she'll have a one-night stand with someone she meets at the con, only to find out later that he's under 18?

I do not see the purpose of this thread or the suggestion.

This year's Fanimecon had two major shocks for me.

The first was a policy change regarding access points. In previous years, people who didn't buy a pass were only blocked from attending specific events. They were still free to roam the convention center's open spaces on both the upper and lower floors. This year, the entirety of the upper floor and a good chunk of the ground floor were off-limits except to pass-holders. This is a HUGE drag.

The second was the sharp increase in registration prices. The last time I attended Fanimecon, a 4-day pass was somewhere in the neighborhood of $60. This year, it was $85. Look, guys, this isn't Venezuela. We're not experiencing 50% annual inflation. This kind of price increase, in combination with the first policy change that I mentioned, is absolutely inexcusable, especially when Kublacon is still only $60.

It was fun while it lasted. Maybe I'll start my own convention with blackjack and hookers.

Were people using that word because most of the music is techno/trance?

Things in the Universe / Felicia Day is overrated
May 16, 2017, 03:09:34 PM
Felicia Day's biggest professional accomplishments:

- Ruined the Youtube series that made her famous to begin with
- Had cancer in one episode of House
- Did a voice in one of the Fallout games
- Is Whil Weaton's friend in real life
- Once expressed a very poorly informed opinion on gamergate
- Has attended some conventions

Let's be real. If not for "The Guild", no one would have any idea who this chick is.

What word was everyone using before the mods replaced it with "dance"?

Making the wristbands optional seems to be the best idea. It would improve efficiency without impairing anyone's cosplay.

There are wristbands that cannot simply be "slipped off". I wore one earlier today during a hospital visit.

If it's not too much to ask, I'd like to join whatever committee is in charge of making these rules.

What the hell is "keep talking and nobody explodes"?
#14
I think this would backfire by creating a surge in low-quality cosplays that exist only for the purpose of getting into the event.

I'm going to make the same suggestion that I made a few years ago:

Lexa Doig has played a hacker (Tekwar), a cryonicist (in Jason X), a starship/robot (Andromeda), and three different medical doctors, one of whom is also a time-traveler and one of whom is an alien. She is the de facto "Queen of the Nerds". I think we should make it official by holding a coronation ceremony in which she is presented with a crown or tiara with the phrase "Queen of the Nerds" inscribed in it. The cost of the headgear could be crowdfunded if necessary.

Uh.....
To be very nice, sounds like your vid was not accepted.

It would be more accurate to say that Ewu forgot about it.

Quote from: echoshadow on April 15, 2015, 09:07:04 PMThat being said, I don't understand the point of your vid. Was it to be a woman achivement thing? Or lack of roles, or gender thingy?  What I took from that clip was a bunch actresses playing those roles. Not sure it's supposed to mean something?

If you don't understand what a music video tribute is, then I'm not sure I can help you.

Back in august 2014, I posted a thread in which I linked to a preview of a non-anime video that I was developing, and asked if you'd be interested in showing it. I was told that you would "take it into consideration", but in the 8 months since then, there has apparently been absolutely no discussion of it on your end, and Ewu is acting like he has no clue what I'm talking about. Can I get some feedback here? Hell, at least a due date would be nice.

Quote from: Gaki on March 14, 2015, 05:10:41 PMIf you can make another opening/video that can get the point across or look just as good as the video without titles, we can accept it, but in any other cases our hands are tied. Sorry.

Removing it from "Failure in Stereo" would be like editing the cylons out of Battlestar Galactica. Yeah, it's doable because they're almost never in it anyway, but what's left over isn't going to make a whole lot of sense :(

One thing I have a problem with:

Quote from: Tsu on February 20, 2015, 10:34:09 PMNO bumpers, subtitles (unless made by you), watermarks, personal identifiers, titles, company logos or credits.

This isn't a problem for most of my videos, because most of my videos use a standard bumper that I can easily remove. However, my next two projects - "35 Years" and "Failure in Stereo" - will have unusual openings into which the WDS logo will be irremovably integrated as part of the video itself.
