This thread is dedicated to the all important topic of where to get good food while at the con. ;)

My first suggestion is always Subway.
Great Price, Great Taste, and well above average Healthiness from what else is available.

Per usual I also suggest taking Vitamins to con.

if your looking for "fast food" there are several places nearby:
McDonalds, Jack in the Box, Pizza my heart, Ben & Jerry's,  Johnny Rockets Etc etc.

There are restaurants all over the place like:
Original Joes, Iguanas, Sonoma Chicken Coop

Even Vegan/Vegetarian options:
Vegetarian House, Good Karma

and there's a new Safeway (grocery store) in downtown now as well.
even our Fanime Guide will show some local eatery's in the local area.

If your looking for cheap fast food you have McDonald and SUbway close. If your looking to really save a buck and you have a refrigerator in your room there is a Safeway close by you can get thinks like bread, lunch meat, cheese, cereal milk, and the like at. only warning on safeway they can be little on the expensive side for soft-drinks but still way cheaper then fountain drinks at a fast food store or the $3-$4 drinks at the convention center.

In you guys opinions, what do you think is better,

La Vics or Iguanas?

IMO both are pretty good, but the orange Sauce sets La Vics apart.

EDIT:
I'm hearing La Vics got closed. Any truth to this?

It's really hard to go wrong downtown it really depends on what you are in the mood for or your budget. Personally I love Iguana's burritos and quesadillas. Their fish burrito is a personal favorite of mine.

There was this pizza place around fanime, but I forgot what it was called. It's wasn't Pizza My Heart. It was yummy pizza with thick cheese and sausage in the center. Though the one place i always go to would have to be this very small bubble tea cafe down the street. It's hard to miss, because the business is basically set up in a two-story house. The Katsu Chicken bento they had was delicious and satisfying. Great prices too.

I don't know about the best, but me and my friends are going to try a BBQ/Steakhouse place we saw on Man Vs. Food. I forget the name, but its prob on their website somewhere, it looked good.

Last time I was their, I had sushi, but I don't exactly remember where, we walked north of the Fairmont and kind of found it.

You mean SmokeEaters? I think that was on that show, though I've only seen the show as glances from my dad watching it. If so, that place is a little ways off from Downtown (2-3 miles) all the way over at Santa Clara University.

Though admittibly a lot of restaurants in San Jose have been on Man vs Food or similar so I could be neglecting something.

There is a ramen place in Japan town. You can get there taking light rail which is right in front of the convention center, same amount of walking if you went to mcdonalds.

Light Rail is your friend, take light rail to get to restaraunts further away from the hotels, the further away restaurants are from hotels and convention center the cheaper it is.

My friends and I went to a nice little pizza a few blocks away from the con last year, I think it was called something like Santa Carlos Pizza? Wish I remembered the exact name, but I'm sure that's close to it.

The cheese was yummy and the crust was perfectly crispy. The price was pretty good too.

Mmm, I think I know which ramen place you're talking about. Their ramen's delicious! <3 There's also a Japanese grocery store across the street and a few other restaurants nearby. c: I haven't tried them yet, but they certainly look good! Though just a note, the restaurants in Japantown tend to close in between lunch and dinner I think, so I would recommend checking their hours. If my memory serves correct, I believe most were open between 11 and 2 for lunch and then from 5 to maybe around 8 or 9 for dinner.

Ideally for con food, my husband and I will stock a cooler for some cheap meals.  We did eat out a lot at Fanime last year just because of our rush leaving.  We won't have to drive 3 1/2 hours this year (more like 15 minutes XD ), so hopefully the rush will be less of an issue.

Our choices for places walking distance:
Tandoori Oven
Subway
I believe there was a baja fresh or somewhere similar
We also went to this bakery right by the Fairmont for coffee and pastries a couple times

Johnny Rocket's is okay.  We're not big burger fans, but we did go there on my little brother's request.

This year will probably have at least one light rail trip up to San Jose's Japantown for dinner.

There's a Subway at:

360 South Market Street (across the street from the convention center)

165 West San Fernando Street (close to the Greyhound Station)

43 South 1st Street (at Post St.)

103 East Santa Clara Street (at Third St.)

The point is, Downtown SJ has a lot of Subways in it.

I'll post other places that I know of later.

There are two Food Maxx grocery stores, one off of Parkmoor Ave. near the 280 and one off of Tully Rd. near the Eastridge Center. They have lower prices than some of the other grocery stories in the area, and you can easily find everything that you need.

It really should just be renamed to La Victoria Sauceria

I agree ^

The sauce is good (healthy? not so much.) but I'd rather grab my food from Iguana's around the corner! Way better imo! Paired with the La Vic's orange sauce? Perfect.

Has anyone thought about signing up for groupons for fanime?? I've been watching them for San Jose for a couple weeks, and sometimes there are some decent deals on dining in the convention area. Deals are typically 15 $ for 30 $ worth of food and things. I want to post my referral link, but I won't. Just look 'em up and put in the area you're interested in. I've bought I think about 5 for my area so far. It's just a thought. I am a groupon fan.

If your going to a fast food place, make sure to get some coupons that you get in the mail.
Like for example; Carl's Jr. sometimes has a coupon that let's you get fries and the drink for free if you buy a big burger. And of course almost every place has "a buy one get one free" coupon. A good way to save money.

I would recommend hitting the other cheap places before the dollar menu, just because with food like that you're likely to get a quick spike of energy from the large amounts of sugar (and other crud) and then you'll feel worse later. But, for a snack that's fine.

For snacks though I bring like a billion bags of cheesy popcorn. I can eat an entire bag in a sitting because it's so frickin' good. Chips and junk too. Y'know.

Since I go to San Jose State I figured I'd throw in my two cents.  Here's a list of where I get my usual grub.  Google for addresses, but they're all within good distance of the downtown area.  Also I left out the pricey places like Sonoma Chicken Coop, Original Joe's, and Scotts Seafood.

Fast food: McDonalds, Togos, Subway, Jack in the Box, Carls Jr are all within 1-5 blocks from the event center.  Carls Jr is a little farther over near Santa Clara Street.

Johnny Rockets [I consider it expensive, but milkshakes are pretty awesome.]
Peanuts Deluxe Cafe [diner that gives you a crapload of food that's probably not good for you but filling.  Cash only.]
Osheyo [Sushi and the works.]
Psycho Donuts
Hydration Tea and Coffee [Milk tea, bento boxes, etc.]
Smoke Eaters [Spicy chicken wings.]
La Victoria Taqueria [Burritos, tacos, enchiladas, orange sauce...]
Iguanas Burritozilla [Burritos, tacos...]
A Taste of Paris [Pastries, soups]
The Cheese Steak Shop
Good Karma Vegan House [vegetarian food, great local coffee]
Cafe Pomegranate [Mediterranean, Persian, great kebabs]
China Chen [Noodles, rice plates]
Pho 69
The Kebab Shack [Kebabs, rice, combo plates]
Pizza My Heart
TK Noodle
Quickly's

Also watch for food trucks.  I know a few make downtown stops, like Mogo's and Curry Up Now.

True. Although it should be safe with fast food places like McDonalds and Carls Jr since I almost never see them be specific about an area. Little Ceasers on the other hand tends to be specific about an area. I guess check to see what deals you can get ahead of time.
Save your money and fill your belly.

You know, if only In-N-Out were near the con site..... those burgers are so damn good! :D

This is the part where I disagree.
Their burgers are extremely plain and lack any distinct flavor.
From there, their fries can only be described as brittle pieces of chalk.
They lack a legitimate menu of any kind beyond Burger A, B, C, to Z which is hidden requiring the customer to actually have to research the food to get a specific crappy burger. That and regardless they are all variations off the same cheese burgers with very few changes between them beyond the amount of meet cheese and sauce on them.
And finally they have worse service then any other fast food restaurant out their, willing to hire even the most under trained individual and throw him anywhere in the building to work without supervision.

Did I ever mention I got a raw hamburger from them? The sad part is that as much of a problem that was, it only just barely pulls ahead of the rest of the pack with my experiences of bad customer service at In and Out in general.
Still does not beat the price tags stamped to my Burrito and Soft Taco from that one Taco Bell though...

Seconded. I never understood the In-N-Out cult. The only thing that's decent is their shakes. If I'm gonna splurge on a burger I'm going to Johnny Rockets. Mmmm

Although while were on the subject of complaining, I'll say you should also avoid Peggy Sue's. The pretty average burgers are ok but definitely way too overpriced. You wind up paying 10 bucks for something that's like 5 or 6 bucks at most fast food places. Not worth it.

The nearest In-N-Out from the CC is the one on Coleman Ave next to the airport and Lowe's. It just opened last year, I believe

I like to sit next to the window at this one and watch the airplanes take-off and land. :D

There is a train outside of the con that you can follow (north) or ride for $2 for 2 hours to a Johny rockets togo's quikke (that sweet tea drink) sushi place and few other food places. A street before that is a pizza my heart bens and jerrys (icecream) and jack in the box and McDonalds. between first and 2nd stop on the train is a PF changs (chinese bistro family style) subway and other food locations including a SafeWay which is a food store. A few more stops and you get to san jose's japan town with Japanese themed food.

The location is near my college so there are TONS of food locations around it. Look up food around San jose state University for good food within walking distance.

I actually work around this area as a pizza delivery guy for Pizza Hut. If you're looking for the Pizza Hut that delivers to the Fanime hotels, you want the one on 52 Keyes St. Not plugging the store, just saying, if you're looking in the phone book for the PizzaHut that delivers to the Marriot or Hilton for example, that's the one. Also, if you're driving by car and have a SMALL budget, there is a Wienerschnitzel nearby. Just go south on Market St untill it turns into 1st St. It will be on your right hand side. Btw, it's only a coincidence that it's near the Pizza Hut, lol. 79 cent corndogs, and if it's a Sunday, 89 cent chili dogs. Good idea if you need a reason for someone NOT to share a bed with you that Sunday night...if you catch my drift.

Hydration Cafe & La Vic's Taqueria...both near 4th & San Carlos & both of these are open waaaay late.  @ La Vic's, if you get the super nachos w/ meat to go then they give you a HUGE portion.  Hydration Cafe has Taiwanese-style lunch boxes & lots of good milk teas.  They keep the artificial stuff to a minimum, too (i.e. their taro smoothie is made with real taro)

There's a few good Vietnamese restaurants around the area...Dalat @ 10th & William, all purpose, though they close early (like 7:30), & Dakao, mostly banh mi, @ 3rd & San Salvador.

There's Japantown...it's about a half hour walk but quicker on the light rail.  I agree with the comments that most restaurants in Japantown have conservative hours...e.g. only open for normal lunch & dinner hours.  They're also pretty small, so they might get crowded.

Again for Groupon.... Today there's a deal for PJ's Deli/Cafe, which seems to be right around the corner. I can't say I've been there, but 8 dollars for 16 dollars worth of sandwiches sounds good to me. I'll probably pick some up and keep them in the room.

Aside from Groupon, there's a coupon place called TownHog  (http://townhog.com/city/san-jose)that's had some good deals lately, but for slightly fancier stuff generally. I got two 50$ coupons for 25$ each for Scott's Seafood. I have a sick weakness for fresh raw oysters on the half shell, so I am gonna indulge XD

They also had a deal a while back for movie tickets, I'm hoping they have another one soon.

Raw oysters are delicious. I had my first (good) oysters a few weeks ago and now I'm addicted =D I hear the seafood place on Race is good and cheap if you have the resources to make it out there =)

My picks:

Chicago Pizza
Pizza My Heart
Iguana's (for the fries, which are a guilty pleasure)
Hydration
Quickly's (2 for 1 pearl teas)
Pita Pit
Sonoma Chicken Coop

If you can afford it:

Scott's
Morton's (but if you're spending that money, get yourself to Alexander's)
Il Fornaio
Gordon Biersch

Psycho Donuts is... okay, sometimes their filling is inconsistent/scant but their flavors are decent. They sometimes have the Econ 101 donut which is great for groups ;)

I ate at Gordon (typed Gorgon there wtf) Biersch's last time I was down there and it was very tasty. I don't remember it being too expensive either, it was under $100 for three of us, two of whom are.. quite fond trying new beer, to say the least XD I'm pretty sure the booze was responsible for the bulk of our bill.

I went to BJ's last week in my town of Modesto and my friends drink was as much as his meal.

It's pretty reasonable, but I was considering smaller food budgets -- I work FT so it's in the a-okay range for me XD most of the restaurants along there (San Fernando, I think) are around the same range as well.

I agree.

Speaking of watering holes, if you're in a group, take advantage of happy hour specials! They're obviously still not going to be as cheap as fast food, but usually you can get a good salad and/or some yummy eats for a decent price (around $5 a plate).

I'd suggest bringing a cooler with cold cuts for the first day or two...
bread, pb&j...<---you will always have decent food i
there's a safeway in downtown, or if you go out on coleman, there is a strip mall with a target, supermarket, el pollo loco, few other fast food places.

you can always take the bus or vta to j-town where there are small japanese eateries (i'd suggest the manju) and the wannabe and pricey hawaiian place: hukilau.

if you're staying in the hotel, bring your own water and drinks...the hotels are a rip off (aren't they always?) i went to a staff meeting a few months ago and bought a $7 rockstar <- didn't realize i was getting ripped off till i already got rang up.

there's lots of places nearby.. iguanas (which is open late) denny's (down the street), lots of subways, jack in the box, johnny rockets, a hot dog stand in the parking lot behind studio 8 (nightclub) at santa clara and 2nd., old spaghetti factory (bleh)...

but if you are an out of towner and are looking for some interesting eateries in the area:
gochi (cupertino)
ramen place inside mitsuwa (saratoga ave. in san jose)
pepper lunch in milpitas
abc (for dim sum) in milpitas I'd skip the dynasty seafood 2 plazas down
palace bbq buffet (sunnyvale)
sweet breams for taiyaki (san mateo)
Himawari-Tel or Santa Ramen for Ramen (san mateo)
Ajisen Ramen (fremont) much better than in sf galleria
Old Town Sushi (Newark)
Izakaya Mai for izikaya in san mateo

^ great info! :)

I'd like to add that nutrition may be underrated at the con. Weirdly, you'd have to think like it's gonna be a marathon: drink lots of fluids (water, Gatorade) and non sugary energy snacks (trail mix). Of course, its an anime con, meaning tons of Mountain Dew, Pocky, and candy. But if you stick to a healthier con diet (lol), you may get to enjoy the con more instead of having caffiene, sugar, or fat withdrawls.

ORIGINAL JOE'S! - pricey on certain items but SAVE UP FOR IT the food is amazing, my fiance and I go every Fanime year to Original Joe's to enjoy a nice dinner. But be warned, call ahead or go early because it takes time to get a seat (everyone wants to go because of how fantastic the food is).... oh and the waiters are amazing. Last year we were going to swipe some butter packets for our bread and the waiter came by and is all "Oh just take them, in fact let me get you more haha" we're all "Zomg thank you!" XD lolololol!

McDonald's - down the street from Original Joe's, a bit of a walk but hey, it's quick and easy and it's McDonalds (dollah menu ftw)

There are a couple other little places around downtown San Jose but I don't have much experience with them. I usually ALWAYS bring my own food (last year my friend brought a rice cooker lol), and if I want to get something to munch it's Joe's or McDonald's.

If you have a car (about a 8-10 minute drive), try Boiling Crab. This is easily the best seafood you can get in the bay area. It normally takes 2 1/2 hours to get a table, but I've been there in the afternoon and got seated within 15 minutes. There are 3 different kinds of sauces you can get but I suggest "The Whole Shabang" which mixes all three together. The shrimp is soooooooooooooooooo good!

Tip: Last year, we had a friend go by Boiling Crab to put our name in a few hours before we planned on going. By the time we were hungry, we drove over there and got seated shortly afterwards. Trust me, its worth the planning.

Not having a good nutrition balance is a mistake I made a few years back. I had to go a nite without having a hotel because I was broke(and my "friend" was a jerk..). I danced for munny offerings which got me a what I thought was a decent amount. But I only had enough munny to buy a pretzel(saltiest one of my lifeT_T). So I was dehydrated from dancing for cash/and even more so from the pretzel. Later in the nite I felt the worst feeling of sleepiness/exhaustion/fatigue and I just so happened to be walking by the Starbucks. Long story short I told my sad sad tale to the manager and he had the bright idea to give me an "experimental" espresso. He told me he had never given anyone a drink that powerful before, and with the common sense I had at the age I thought "oh great this should help me!"...Worst mistake ever..It tasted like liquid death(even AFTER drowning it in Milk/sugar) and after a short while I went into a hell like zombie state. And I bordered on the line of consciousness for the rest of the nite. I don't remember much after that...I think I talked to a bum..*sigh*

Basically let that story be a lesson for those of you with bad diets that don't have a room to go back too, to crash>,>.

I have to say for cheap FanimeCon food I ALWAYS go to Safeway in my town or a CVS or Dollar Store and I buy a bunch of stuff. Like sandwiches, chips, waters.. Etc. And then when I get to a hotel - or rather when other people get hotels because I have another house I stay at that's 30 minutes away in Menlo Park - I just throw it all in the fridge and then when I go to the convention I pack that stuff as lunch and dinner. BUT YOU SHOULD DO IT IN YOUR HOMETOWN! I have seen it where convention goers totally clean out stores that sell cheap food around the convention areas and going out to eat isn't always that cheap. Especially if you are at the convention on a budget.

I live in San Jose and I believe that one of the best restaurants u can find is probably Henry's Hi-life. the baby back ribs there are AMAZINGGG. ribs cost $17 which includes a potato with some kind of cream/cheese which also tastes awesome. if you wanna know where it is, its right behind HP Pavilion and you should also check their website, http://henryshilife.com/.

Since im vietnamese, i know my Pho (delicious viet noodles)... Probably the best Pho restaurant in downtown is Dac Phuc. Most of the meals would cost you around $5-$8

If you need quick food thats pretty close to fanime, theres mcdonalds, iguanas, some kinda cheesesteak place, jack n the box, and other restuarants of that area. you'll see alot of people walk towards and away from there. Just go east on san carlos street and ull be right there.

Honestly, I've had Amici's pizza after hearing so much about it on the radio. Amici's is good, but HIGHLY...HIGHLY overrated for the price. Not just because I work at Pizza Hut, because I like our "rival" Dominoes Pizza better. Besides, you can get more pizza from Pizza Hut with the deals we got currently...although the best one won't work with delivery. But that's my own opinion.

While their prices are a tad high, they really don't look that bad for good pizza here in the bay area. If it is, indeed, good pizza, I don't think pizza hut or dominos should even be brought up. More pizza=/= good deal when it's bad pizza.

Living in San Jose for more than 5 years has only made me more aware of this problem. NEVER go to any of the fast food places when there is a con in town. Even if it's roughly 5 miles away. They're going to be so busy that nearly 90% of the food is never cooked all the way. I don't know how many times I've gotten food poisoning from MC D's or BK. Or the few times I got old meat from a Sub Way. The only place I could even suggest eating at is either La Victorieas' (right near the con) for Mexican food and maybe this carles' Jr that's a block or 2 from the con. Everywhere else... just be careful to the food being all under cooked and never handled right.

Living in San Jose for more than 5 years has only made me more aware of this problem. NEVER go to any of the fast food places when there is a con in town. Even if it's roughly 5 miles away. Sounds like you just have bad luck.

I think it's "Henry's high-life." I've eaten there and it's really good.
