Last year I had a bow to go with my costume, and I carved it out of styrofoam (covered in papier mache, etc). I used a fairly slack elastic string, so the entire thing was absolutely nonfunctional. When I went to get it peacebonded, I was required to remove the string.
Not sure if that was actually part of the policy, or if it will be this year, just wanted to share what my experience was.
you got the string removed?  ._.      ...*feels discouraged*
Wait....if the string is removed, wouldn't that kind ruin the cosplay and be harder to pose with?

The cosplay was in no way ruined, since the string was just a small detail. I just had a little bit of trouble with some poses - my left hand isn't all that strong, and the bow was sort of heavy, so I kept having to check and make sure I was holding the bow correctly.
To be honest, I don't even realize, in pictures, the bow has no string unless I remember it doesn't.

I'm planing to bring a bow and arrow set to go with my cosplay. Are there any restrictions?

Another good question --- i'm guessing if its a non-working Bow and Arrow --- meaning the bow does NOT actually pull back and the arrow is not to be used as a projectile in ANY shape or form

now posing with the arrow as of going to be shot of course is ok - but if the arrow is actually shoot-able... then we're gonna have some issues.

I'll ask at the meeting this Saturday.  :)

thank you.

The bow will be full functional (trying to make it somewhat realistic as possible) but the arrows are just going to be sticks with feathers and maybe a foam or soft rubber head (don't know yet) that I'm making myself. Highly doubt it'll hurt someone.

Once you know something could you please tell me asap? I'm working on the arrows already.
yeah i'm gonna need at least one bow as well... and it's kindof impossible to make it not shootable unless you have a string that hangs with like two feet of slack.  which is ridiculous.  so perhaps there could be some more lenient rules than "not shootable" perhaps like saying that the string has to be made of elastic cord or something so that it can be realistic looking but not easily shot with.

Hi everyone!
My name is Kristiina, and I'm sort of a huge lurker here (to obnoxiously drop a name, I'm friends with a young lady who goes by StrawberryNeko). Lately though, I've been more active in an online American Idol community that calls itself ONTD_AI (Oh No They Didn't _ American Idol). We're currently involved in a fundraising competition, and I was wondering how many of you might be able to donate/help out with advertising?
The donation organization itself is DonorsChoose.org, where you (the donor) picks any of the available projects to donate any amount (anything from $1 to $1 million). We are currently involved in programs that bring music and art to impoverished public schools in the United States.

I promise this isn't a scam, I myself have donated (granted only $5 but I'm a poor college student!), and the competition is actually being organized by Adam Lambert, the runner-up from this past season, and his PR team.
If there's enough interest I'll edit in the link to the giving page!

Thanks for your time!

Anyone know which sewing pattern is good for Nemu Kurotsuchi from Bleach?
She wears a kimono type thing, or does she wear a skirt too? Or is it just a really long kimono? Help would be appreciated.

Kimono are already long, traditionally knee-length. I think what you're thinking of is a gi, which is often found in karate/other martial art uniforms.
From what I've seen, Nemu wears a super-shortened kimono that ends in a tight fit. Maybe you could take an existing kimono pattern and alter the bottom to fit more tightly - it's still a kimono, though, so you could secure it closed with snaps, buttons, or even loosely stitch it down. If you wanted to cheat, you could make the top separate from the bottom and hide the ends with the obi. That way the skirt could be fitted more easily.
Please please please remember though, the white is another layer under the black, and the two layers are folded separately.

I'm definitely going to have a finished Sun Shang Xiang from Dynasty Warriors 4 next year. I felt so unworthy of being in the huge group with my unpainted cos and chakrams that were flaking gold leaves everywhere. If you found a random gold foam leaf on the floor, that was probably me. I know I left a trail all over the con center.
My friends and I are planning a Suikoden 4 group, a possible Avatar group, and I want to finish up both my P3 Fuuka and a steampunk outfit.

My last final is on the Tuesday before, and even if it weren't finals season for SJSU before Fanime, I don't have Friday classes.
Two years ago, when I was still in high school, my mom probably would have let me skip classes; I just would have been on my own for a ride.

I'm not great with prop swordmaking, but one of my friends suggested carving it out of MDF (medium density fiber) board. My Hitsugaya sword was actually made out of 2 yardsticks (free ones I got when I went to Southern Lumber) glued together and sanded down. If you go buy wood, I'd strongly suggest staying away from the balsa wood you'd find in Michael's and other craft stores: it can be too thin to stand up to any abuse.

I believe it's most common to either build one out of cardboard and paint, or to buy a silver airsoft gun and mod it a little. I dunno, I probably won't have an evoker in time for Fanime.

I don't understand what this guy was talking about with the dusters:
QuoteTo make the dusters pouf out more, I sewed a ruffle of netting underneath them where the shoulder and sleeve seams met.
I don't get it

Netting. you know, like the stuff that makes up petticoats? The ... net-like stuff you can find in, yes, the formal fabric section of JoAnns. AA put in the dusters (the ruffly things at Alucard's shoulders) since she did take the coat apart at the seams. The netting went under the dusters, probably right where they join the sleeves at the seam.

Hey all,
I was planning on going to '08 as Fuuka from Persona 3 and was wondering if anyone else was planning on cosplaying from that game (or the general SMT series), or if, you know, anyone had ever even heard of Shin Megami Tensei. It, along with various other Atlus games, seems to be a rather... obscure fandom.

I'm not sure what your sewing level is, but I did find a thrift-shop breakdown of Alucard's costume, courtesy of Amethyst Angel's website: http://amethyst-angel.com/cosgallery_alucard.html

Might have to hunt around for the right stuff, and sewing is minimal.
Not too sure on the price, but if you don't use leather (which I suggest as his coat isn't leather to begin with), it shouldn't run too high.

Lolz. I wonder if cosplay chess will ever get off the ground.
If somebody else decides they wanna plan/organize the chess match(es), I'll gladly offer my services. Not as a piece or player, but something more behind the scenes.

So my pretty much final list:

Autumn Kimono Anastasia - Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Sun Shang Xiang - Dynasty Warriors 4

Yup. I might add another costume over the next few months, but this is pretty much it.

Quote from: "Ayanami Rei First Child"Yeah I never got glomped without permission, or even hugged. I mean I know I wasn't in a super awesome cosplay or anything....I was only crossdressed in a pink dress and stuff....but I didn't really see people getting glomped without permission.

HOWEVER I think there is one girl who should be carefully watched...she just screams and then goes over and gives people a sloppy glomp where she just jumps up slightly and wraps herself around the guy. That puts a lot of strain on the ankles, and it'd be really easy for someone to get a sprain, PLUS she didn't give them a real warning or allow themselves to brace properly.

Seriously...WRONG way to glomp.

That's a frightening way to glomp. Someone could get seriously hurt if she caught them by total surprise.
I couldn't bear to watch the whole video because her behavior kind of reminds me too strongly of my creepy roommate... who, yes, will do that (especially to me, it seems) even though she's a full 100 pounds heavier than I. I'm sort of glad I didn't see this girl the whole weekend.

Woohoo!
I'm hopping the Amtrak tomorrow afternoon, and I'll get in around 5. I'll just drop by the con center to pick up my badge, then head on home for some home cookin'.
I won't be going on Friday, but I will definitely be in attendance Saturday and Sunday.
I was so excited to be going, I packed everything last Thursday.

Loli - Bleach
Anastasia (Autumn Kimono) - Shadow Hearts II
Yukimura Tokine (working clothes) - Kekkaishi

I'm looking for a Menoli to go with my Loli (or the other way around, whichever works), so if anyone's interested.. *winkwinknudgenudge*
