Before I get into it, let me note that I'm sending this (verbatim) to the feedback form so that Fanime's staff can see it. That being said, I just wanted to give other congoers a chance to pitch in.

Since the convention here on the forums I've seen the volunteer/by fans for fans mentality listed as an obstacle to extreme change at the convention. Congoers ask for badges to be mailed out, Fanime folk tell us that they don't have enough volunteers to do the envelope stuffing. People ask for logistics folk to be hired for registration to flow more slowly, we're told that no one is paid on the Fanime staff so that's an impossibility. I've seen posts with regards to the masquerade requesting that someone with experience be brought on as staff, whether to run it or to help train the volunteers- and again, it's shot down under the notion of everyone being volunteers.

I love the fact that Fanime comes from a fan mentality and that it's run by people who are fans of anime. But I am genuinely concerned that Fanime will become strangled by this ideal- maybe not next year, maybe not the year after, but possibly in the future. Even beyond registration, there were apparently many problems (not all of them, mind you) at the con this year that often came back to not enough people or people who didn't have enough training. I'm not doubting the dedication or effort of the volunteers and staff AT ALL, but Fanime is only going to get bigger and bigger. What if more people step down (like with the cosplay spectacular department) and Fanime's left scrambling to find volunteers/staff to fill in that may or may not have the proper experience? The FMV directors stepped down this year. Will there be someone who's qualified to fill that space?

I think most people would agree with me that if Fanime had a handful of people on PAID staff, that it wouldn't ruin the ideals of fanime. Would badge prices have to be raised? Possibly, but even a few dollars per badge with 20,000+ attendees would create quite a budget for such a thing. I'm not going to claim to have any ideas as to raise revenue or how much additional revenue would need to be raised, but I think Fanime needs to open itself to the idea. At this point in time Fanime can't afford to not be a professional-level convention, volunteer-run or not.

I hope this doesn't come off as inflammatory. I want Fanime to thrive. I've been going to Fanime for ages and it worries me to see such major stumbling blocks two years in a row- this time without the outside uncontrollable influence of a power outage to blame. I admire the staff and volunteers for all they do- I just don't want to see Fanime having to choose between its ideals and flourishing as a con. I'm sure there's a middle-ground!

I don't know why he wasn't there, but it bummed me out too. If he didn't want to come or couldn't, that's fine, but I hope Fanime at least asked him!

If someone lost a full-size katana with a black sheath and grip, call the Saint Claire. I found one in the hallway and was too exhausted to walk back to Fanime at 4 in the morning (doubt anyone would be available to take it anyway) so we handed it over to the Saint Claire's lost and found.

During those 6+ hours, I noticed a few things.  First, there were a lot of handicapped and special needs folks that were really suffering while waiting in line.  One of the person I was speaking with was diabetic.  He was suffering so bad that he was literally ready to keel over by hour 4.  The whole "line after line" and the "almost there" approach didn't help him either.  Second, a lot of people who took public transportation waited for 3-hours but were forced to give up because the last train left at 10:30pm.

This really bugs me. Fanime announced a few days before the con that they were going to have a shortened line/front of the line privileges for those who are disabled, but I sure didn't see it happening in my line on Friday, either. Now, the attitude could be "if the disabled person doesn't seek help, we won't offer anything", but that doesn't make much sense. If someone is standing in line for more than an hour and is disabled, they should be given preferential treatment. At the very least, the staff should be checking in with them when they see them and making sure they're OK. Given that Friday's line was at least 2 hours and Thursdays was an abysmal 6+, there's no excuse for the disabled being overlooked. Even with a minimal number of staff walking around, over the course of 6 hours, people visibly struggling should have been noticed and aided. Using the "they should have said something/asked for help" doesn't really cover it.

In addition, what happened to the idea of the 2-pickups for pre/early reg? Was that abandoned when it became obvious that the lines were so absurd? I was in the pre-reg line and we were funneled into 2 separate ballrooms, but I don't know the name of them. Never been to the Fairmont before. But what I do know is that no one ever asked about it, so I'm guessing that all of the badges were just lumped into one pile.

Thanks for the response. The screening did start at the proper time today so that was a pleasant change. Also, there were pens available today while yesterday there only seemed to be one or two available... So that was also an improvement.

Unfortunately, nothing was changed with the screening of the duplicate/skipped videos. I wasn't there when the screening started so I don't know if it was explained or not but there were a lot of confused people when it played for the 2nd time. And of course the oddest thing is that due to the second room being Action, Drama, Comedy & then Experimental, we saw the video in Action before seeing it in its proper place.

I hope his Drama vid does well, at least. It was quite good.

I'm one of the "lucky" ones- I came during the "slow time" on Friday and only had to spend 2 hours in line. But it was still 2 hours. I remember coming to this con a couple years ago and spending 15 minutes in line.

I know the registration staff is resistant to mailing out badges, but frankly, something has to change. The crowd is only going to get worse and registration needs to adapt in order to keep up with the increasing crowds.

I, for one, am in agreement with those who want the badges mailed out. I would pre-order earlier and pay an extra fee to get my badge. I'd sign a waiver indicating that if I lose the badge (meaning, it successfully makes it to me but I misplace it) that I don't get a new one printed unless I purchase another one. I'd do a lot of things to avoid the ridiculous lines.

And while I'm all for Thursday being badgeless, it really does destroy the only remaining point of getting a pre/early-reg badge. We don't get a short line, we don't get exclusive access a day earlier... the only thing we get is the option to stand in a 6-7 hour line in order to get our badge, by which point everyone's pretty much exhausted and doesn't want to do anything at the con that night anyway. As another 10+ year Fanimecon-goer, I'm really disappointed.

Oh, and let me be clear, I don't hold this against the registration staffers. They were utterly exhausted on Friday and did muss up a few things while I was trying to pick up my badge but considering (I overheard) that they were there as late as 2:30 AM the prior day and had to be back to it by 8, I can't blame them. We need more reg staffers and we need a system that doesn't completely rely upon exhausted people to get thousands of people processed every day.

For anyone still viewing this thread, the FMV Finals do NOT start seating @ 1 as stated on the site. They start playing them at 1. Show up at 12:30 or so if you want early seating for Saturday. I showed up "early" today at 1:15 and missed the first 3 videos. :(

Also, I doubt anything can be done about it since the coordinator is off-site, but the 2nd room has a playlist problem. It repeats a drama vid in the action category and skips the action vid that's supposed to be there entirely (the skipped vid was Magi, the Dayman) I feel badly for that editor... as an audience member near me said, they'll most likely lose by default, even if they're screened in the other room properly.

Welp, there goes my chances of winning >_<

Oh, it's yours! So that's what happened! They put your Drama video twice. So the vid that had footage stolen from it played in place of your Action entry, but also in its proper place. That's a pretty big goof on their part.... Sorry dude :(

I'm pretty sure signs as a whole are semi-banned... semi meaning if it's part of your costume, it's usually ok.

But most people are easy going about hugs. You could always ask individuals if you can hug them, or even stand around with your arms open like you're giving a hug, lol. I'm sure people would partake.

I love the cool weather. After an unseasonably warm Winter & most of Spring, I'm going to enjoy San Jose's cooldown.

Grumble-grumble, complain-complain. It's clearly not finished. It's free. I don't know how it's going to look when many events are lumped into the same time-block, but it's better than nothing. Keep in mind we also had the mobile site last year, which wasn't perfect, but was helpful. And the regular online schedule. And schedules posted at every info desk. And single-room schedules posted at every room. Oh, and the mini-schedule you could carry around.

I'm not sure it needs to be any more convenient than all of that.

Tch. Hiding, huh? Shows he's got a guilty conscience, I guess. Odd that his AMVs.org profile & videos are still there, but maybe they're harder to delete... I dunno.

IMO, he would've been better off publically and personally apologizing, withdrawing at least the stolen-material video from competition and hoping the AMV Contest Deities (coordinators) had mercy on him.

I've seen people on YT with blatantly-ripped-off videos posted as being theirs, but entering international competitions with stolen material is a whole 'nother ballgame. A stupid one.

Good job. I also downloaded the video last night figuring that'd probably happen. :/

I'm glad you caught this. I hope it's resolved the best way possible.

Yep! They play the same list in both rooms. It's played in 2 rooms to make sure that everyone who wants to see it can, since it's a big event. (It used to play across the street @ the concert hall.)

They do play the categories in different order in each room, though. This is to prevent an audio lag-echo from coming through the wall and messing up the experience.

Hi everyone,
All the emails have gone out as of tonight! If you submitted something and haven't gotten something back, please let us know asap! Also, congrats to all of our finalists! This year was exceptionally tough as the level of entries got so much better across the board. Those of you who didn't make it this year should still be proud as well.

The Judge's Panel had nothing but great reviews on all of them. Unfortunately, we had to cut almost 5 hours of worth of entries into a 2 hour show! We tried out best to include as many as possible in this year's show. In fact, just a heads up if you're at the show, we got approval to go about 10 minutes past our original allotted time once we showed them how good this years videos were. I wish we could get more time for all of you. Again, with out all of you, we have no show and we appreciate all of your hard work!

I will be posting the official line up in a new post just like last year. You should all be very proud!

Yow! 5 Hours worth?! That's amazing. Sounds like the show will be really good this year.

Looking forward to the numbers, too. :D

To those of you who have gone to the showings in previous years, How many people usually watch the show?

Mr Matthew;

The show is on 2 days in 2 neighboring rooms. Friday tends to be the day with less viewers and the second room usually has less folks than the 1st. That being said, Friday has maybe on average 60-70% of each room full. Saturday is nuts since con population is higher on Saturdays. The 1st room often becomes 100% full with people lined up against walls and sitting around the projector; the 2nd room is always less full, but probably more full than it is on Fridays.

I don't know what the capacity on these 2 rooms are, but they're about average viewing room size. If you really want to see the best audience reaction and can only come on one day, come on Saturday and avoid room 2. I don't know why, but the second room tends to be kind of dead. Minimal applause and practically no reaction to comedy. It's kind of weird since the other room is overflowing with energy and excitement.

Aw, I'm sorry. I'm sure you'll get in next year! :D

In the meanwhile, I'm pretty sure you still get to join the other editors in the editor-only pre-seating, so we'll see you there! :)

That's right! I think I will be able to get access, since I believe some people who entered are out of state and won't be able to attend Fanime. Does anyone know if we are allowed to bring in a friend with us? Literally one friend?

I've brought multiple friends with me before. Usually there's more seating set aside for editors than necessary, and in recent years editors can basically sit wherever they like. Sometimes there's an area marked off for editors, but you don't HAVE to sit there. As they get closer to the end of general seating they let non-editors join the editor seating area. So one friend should be juuust fine. :D
