I started a thread in the panel section about maybe having a panel abnout energy drinks (I wont go into detail because this is the wrong place for it, so check it out!) and the idea came up that maybe Fanime should sell energy drinks.
Have just a little "bar" or something maybe outside the video rooms or over by the other food stands out by the arcades that sells an array of energy drinks.
One may argue that you can just go to the nearest convenience store yourself and get your own energy drinks. However, most of us will be needing these at night or the wee hours of the morning, and it's not very safe for us to be roaming the streets of San Jose at night!
I'm sure there's plenty of things that I'm overlooking, but I would love to see it happen.
What do you guys think?

Not a bad idea actually...and yes its true we are trying to get a hold of Bawls and securing a deal that will work with FanimeCon + E-gaming, and Bawls. I'm preparing the proposal to submit to my boss + other high ranking people for discussion.

You know, Red Bull also does promotions like this. But it'd be cool if it was Jolt... but more on the Energy Bar...
YEAH, have a bar where the Bar tender mixes different energy drinks or whatever! Like Those Star Trekkies and their Romulan Ail (blue coolaid) except Fanime can have their own type of bar with Energy Drinks!!! You could start a new trend there! Yeah!

The San Jose convention center wouldn't allow us to do this for free. Anything that is sold on their property has to be approved by them (food and drink sells = no). It may be brought up to them, but they'll either tell us to pay them (a big fee, might I add) or they will handle it themselves (and charge alot). The closest thing is to either have Bawls/Red Bull/whoever come by and give them for free or to have them sell it in the dealer's room (during dealer hours).

Set a room aside like to be some sort of tavern or such and THEME it. make it like a JAZZ cafe or something, and have people dress up like they're straight out of Cowboy Bebop, or make it look like some sort of sea-side pub ala One Piece. It might me a bit of work, but I think it'd totally be worth it.
Perhaps combine it with the Karaoke room so people can perform and such as they kick back and have a drink?

once you come up with the realization that a hotel/CC will charge you for practically anything and everything - it gets pretty hard to come up with new ideas unfortunately.

I already thought of the money and man power needed to make this happen. I was thinking maybe you get a sponsor like Red Bull or Bawls to promote or sell their product but collaborate with the staff to make a cool cafe/bar setting.
Another thought is, Fanime is in the top 10 biggest anime conventions in North America. With its largest competition a couple months after, I think that coming up with new ideas is essential for the growth of this show. New ideas, like this bar, would seperate it from the other shows like AX or Otakon attracting more attendees and more investors. As cliche as it sounds, Fanime needs to think outside of the box to achieve more. In California, the top 2 turnouts for anime are #2 Anime Expo in Anaheim (30,000) and #1 (which isn't even an anime convention) The San Diego Comic-Con (95,000). The "bar" would be a large "wow" factor if done right and compliments your 24 hour video rooms. Comic-Con has a Starbucks in their convention center and Starbucks has a booth in the dealer's hall. The booth passes out samples giving just enough to the passer by to go out to the Starbucks and purchase the drink. How smart is this? That Starbucks was busy from before dealer hall opening till after it closed. Nonstop. Starbucks was happy, the Con was happy and the attendees were happy. Try to get this to work.

When I said it gets hard to come up with new ideas --- I'm NOT discouraging anyone from doing so. In fact I think you're more optimistic then I am.
I believe the day will come when anime cons in general will experience a contraction in attendance numbers. What's the old saying, "Everything eventually will fall." When that day comes new and fresh ideas will be needed not to grow but just to keep from sinking!
Anyways on a more positive note, I think the biggest obstacle will be the hotel/CC restrictions, that and also somebody to organize this thing.
Ideas get implemented not when someone says:
"I have an idea."
but instead when someone steps forward and says:
"I want to organize this thing." 8)

We are thinking outside of the box, and eventually will have some sort of energy drink station/bar/deal/etc./etc. just not this year (unfortunately, I believe it's too late to start talks with SJCC, but I might be wrong). Fanime is the
Fan's con (as cliche as that sounds) and all ideas are listened to. If there's a reason why we can't follow up or make that idea happen one year, that doesn't mean that we can't do it the next year. ;)
Afterall, I'm sure that we would want to move up and not down. =P
Well, I am Happy to see that this idea isnt completely dissed and that it's grown into something even more than what I had intended.
I do agree, it is a little bit too late for organizing this thing this year, but I am happy with the idea that it's a possibility for next year. (I smell a senior project!)
I would love to be involved with organizing it. I have organized school functions and things of the sort in my earlier years of high school and late middle school, and I think that we (yes, we) could do this.
Another year would give us just enough time for everything we need to do including the mistakes that are bound to happen.

My first (and only) bottle of Bawls was from a ... Savemart in San Jose. In the Evergreen area, to be exact. Damn expensive for a little bottle like that but it was gooood.

Eri, some 7-11s stock Bawls. The one near my school does, which is a total lifesaver.
CompUSA around here sells the drink. Specifically, the one in downtown San Francisco on Market, and the one in South San Francisco across the street from Tanforan. I've never had it, but those are two CompUSAs I've seen it at . That would be my best guess of where to get it.
The whole bar idea sounds need but too far out there, unfortunately. :(

You know what else we could do? PUT TRACKERS on every person who takes a bottle, and then hunt them down and demand payment.

You want a bar set up that sells Brawls, Red Bull, etc., and possibly, you are looking for an oxygen bar too.
Don't even think about selling your our supply of 'anything' inside the hotels or the convention center, because you can't, even if you lose money on the deal. There will be additional security walking the floor space and looking for violators.
Marriott last year had a Red Bull concession stand set up and it work out for them very well, in fact so well, that they ran out of the stuff on Saturday and had their vendor bring in more on Sunday morning.
If we can't get a sponsor, maybe the hotels can set up, again, this year Red Bull stands and we might ask them to get Brawls too.
As for opening a room specify for drinks or a café arrangement, that would require space and that's what we are lacking, because every spare inch is being used, even all the hotel areas.
I am will to investigate with the SJCCF to have them supply energy drinks at their concession stands, but an oxygen bar will be tougher, especially since I don't know of any that would be willing to set up in the convention center. There would be the question of the health code, but if anyone knows of a business that is willing to discuss with us that side of it, please have them contact me on this thread.

Thanks for the link... OMG, they want $2k for five hours rental time! We would need a sponsor for those types of pricing.
Booths in the convention center will cost a fee from Center Plate (the owner of the rights for B&F inside the convention center) for selling food and beverage inside their facility. CP will also want a cut of the profits and they would charge the vendor (if that's us) for the electrical drops they require for their cash register.
I think its better to have the hotels bring in the stuff and be done with it. I'll talk to them about getting cash carts for the beverages and maybe signs indicating where the cash carts are located.

Sometimes, you can also buy Bawls at a FoodMax. And you can always get the 12 packs in a box at CompUSA. I do not suggest getting thinkgeek to ship some to your home though... Shipping can really kick you in the bawls.

Huh. That's interesting... I don't think I've ever seen Bawls at the FoodMaxx in my area. Maybe I've just missed it or something.
I've never seen it either. That's just what I've been told. Whatever though... I'll either go to CompUSA on my way to Fanime, or I'll find the 2 closest 7-11s to Fanime and go during the weekend.

Why does Fanime have to provide that? Can the person with that humanitarian suggestion just get a table at Artist Row and give it out, or sell it without looking for a profit? What they Should do is have is venting machine's with rockstar,monster,redbull,jolt,etc so attendee's and staff can get the fix for the once's that need it
Please charge normal price cause they already are abit expensive already...if u know what i mean :P
Personally after going to AX the prices at Fanime seemed reasonable. XD;; This Idea is pretty good, as long as they don't adopt the AX pricing of $5.25 for a Rockstar, it can be a real hit. One thing does bother me tough, I'm scared of narutards on Pocky now they'll have Rockstar and Bawls too. *gulp* Secure yourselves. ^^;;
After reading everyone's ideas about a bar, I have a few suggestions.
I actually have a degree in Restaurant Management, so I'd be more than happy to help or even lead anyone who would like to formulate this bar. Or 'bar' as you want to call it.
Otaku Bar
Not sure if this one will run over so well with the higher ups, but let's face it... 70% of con attendees are legal adults. Revenue from the bar will go to a) paying the loan to obtain supplies and b) next year's con budget. I have a degree in restaurant management and understand the ins and outs of bar operations (including licensing, etc). It will be a limited bar, as it would cost way too much to provide a full bar with a short list of available cocktails designed specifically with Otaku in mind. This will provide a) income for the con, b) prevent attendees from going out into downtown San Jose and getting drunk there.
ex. Ramune Romantica (Hypnotic and Melon Ramune), Hime-sama (Vodka and Peach), Sakura Drops (Soju, Calpis and Grenadine).
Some classic drinks will be available (Margaritas, Jack and Coke, Tokyo Teas).
I'm sure some of you are saying, "How would you regulate the bar? How do you make sure that underage attendees aren't drinking?"
1. Drinks will NOT leave the designated bar area.
2. EVERYONE will be carded, regardless of age.
3. A stamp or wristband will be given to those who are of legal age, color will change daily. (if wristbands are given, then they will be wrapped snug enough to not be removed and passed on to the person outside the area.)
4. Bar opens at 5pm, closes at 2am.
5. ONLY con attendees will be allowed in the bar area.
Ideally, the bar would be placed out on the patio that sits at the end of the convention hall, on the Mariott end. We would have to obtain a Type 48 Liqour License (or I think there's a special license that allows a short time sale).
Other ideas to tack on to this is to design the bar into a theme. Cosplay is always popular.
This again, does not have to be an 'alcoholic' bar and instead, an energy drink bar or lounge. Yes, the Maid Cafe was a good idea. However, I noticed that the demand for seats was much higher than could be provided. There are tons of ways we can do this and if everyone is interested, let's produce a proposal for the staff heads to present at the next staff meeting.
well it would be nice if monster or rockstar had a booth there at Fanime and sold drink from like 9am -9 pm the same night for the whole con and gave the staff free drinks would be nice.. they would be a great sponser to have!

have a few vending machines that sold the drink but make them normal price! there already high enuff :P
I love the idea of a energy drink bar. It would make it sooooo much easier to get energy drinks at night and not have to walk around San Jose looking for a fix.

there should be a different variety of energy drinks... bawls, full throttle, rock star, red bull, red line ect...
it should be in the evening too. where there is the most people...

As a head member of the staff formerly known as Rovers The idea of an "Enrgy Drink Bar" frightens me. I Shudder at the thought of tousands of Otaku running around the con; each hopped up on 2 bawlz, 3 Red Bulls, and a Go girl... They would have to enforce a 3 drink/day limit or something maybe even make it 18 + only. Just to keep someone from drinking too much caffine and end up having heart palpitatiopns or arrhythmia. On the other hand I would love to be able to pop over to the drink bar and get my can of "Cocaine" entering my 12th consecutive hour on shift...

i think an "energy drink bar" already exists at fanime; i think it's called Starbucks, and it should be located near the Hilton side.
jokes aside, 'tis a very good idea, but not a feasible one at that. You're serving drinks in a sense that your performing a type of foodservice, and this would probably nip the bud of the SJCC in turn.
BUT.....i fail to see a problem with someone just deciding to walking the halls at night, towing a small little cooler behind him with various types of energy drinks and such......winkwink.
A lot of people are repping Bawls. I used to like them, but I'm not sure why, now-- they're actually kind of bland and don't really keep me awake, anymore. I like Vault and Rockstar...
I'd suspect serving energy drinks to hundreds of people at Fanime would get pretty expensive, though. There's already a "food court" that is pretty overpriced from what I've heard, and serving energy drinks would probably be expensive to purchase too, to keep up profit.

People are already pretty hyperactive at cons. I can't imagine how it'd be to have an energy drink bar.
But then again, there are exhausted staffers and the few who tire themselves out or patrol the con late at night lacking the energy to do anything the next day.

Coffee never really does it for me-- but then again, energy drinks only keep me awake, rather than energize me to perform extreme physical action... other than Burn. That stuff is pretty scary. I was surprised I didn't get caffeine poisoning from my first sip.
