Title: Panel and Workshop Suggestions for 2007
Post by: fullmetalneko on May 29, 2006, 09:57:36 PM
Hello everyone,

Just posting this up here now so we can get a start as soon as possible in planning for next year.  I was happy with how things went my first time around.  But I know that things can be better!   So start those ideas here.  This will also help me get a picture of what kind of set up we may need as well.  There have already been a few suggestions I have seen in other threads, such as having more Video Game related panels, Ect.   Please post those here.

I will also ask if everyone can be as detailed as possible in discribing what kind of panel they want.  In some ways this may sound silly, but it will really help when trying to see if it can be pulled off or not.

Thanks Everyone!   Lets see those ideas start rolling!  =}

I already talked to someone about that today.  Next year things will be a bit easier on the scheduling.  So problems like this most likely wont happen again.

Please put wifi in the panel room.  I'm sure some panels *cough*Fanime BB panel*cough* will benefit greatly from it.

This is something on my agenda, but since the convention center itself doesn't have a full Wi-Fi set up, the cost may be too insane to pull it off.

I actually have them scheduled already for next year.   We hope to have them set up somewhere for broadcast coverage next year.  Possibly from Stage Zero if I can get it arranged.  (That is my little personal Pipe Dream XD)  But indeed, Rob and Co. are great and it will be awesome to have them back next year. =}

If my suggestion (another thread in another subforum) comes true, then we need those Eurobeat artists to describe what goes into writing their songs. What synthesizers do they use? What makes it so addicting?

Eurobeat Panel FTW.

Video Game panels. Seriously, I think it would be awesome to have some panels that recap on E3 (Which would have happened slightly before Fanime) and/or a chance to show off some cool video game trailers. Companies I'd like to see at the video game panels:

Square-Enix
Capcom
DDR Company? Bemani I think?

People I'd LOVE to see (but is unlikely):
Nobuo Uematsu
Keiji Inafune (Creator of Megaman)
Yoshinori Kitase or another Final Fantasy Director (Kitase did VIII)

I'd love to see Matt Greenfield come down and do an ADV panel. When I saw him at JTAF a couple years ago he was really friendly and told us about a lot of cool stuff.

So yeah, Matt Greenfield doing an ADV panel.

Right now I can't think of any anime or manga people...but those are my suggestions for the moment.

The ones I would like to try and bring in would be Konami (Bemani people), Capcom, SNK, Square-Enix, and Nippon-Ichi.  Konami and Nippon-Ichi probably being the easiest of those to get people in.  The people from Nippon-Ichi are so nice any time I have met them.  Square-Enix is the one that may be a huge huge challenge.  They tend to be very private in their dealings and even promotions.  Such as being very strict about photos and video of or around their booth at E3.  I feel lucky to have gotten the pictures of the big statues that I got.  But that is something I would like to have.  Particularly with such a large amount of Final Fantasy and general square cosplay that goes through, it would be great to have some kind of hosted panel.

Its still a year away so its something to work on.  =}

As far as the guests...  Uematsu would probably be the easiest to obtain as far as possibilities.   Since Kitase and Nomura are the leads on FF13 they will probably be WAY busy for quite some time.  One other person to not discount would be Hinorobu Sakaguchi, since him and his Mistwalker team are working on a whole catalog of new IP's in the realm of RPGs.  (Not to mention working with Uematsu as an In-house sound man).  Again i'm really taken by this train of thought so lets see what can be done of it.

[Edit]  I forgot...  Namco/Bandai would probably be a good one too due to their growing catalog of Anime Based games.

But we would desperately need a network connection.

Nippon Ichi...awesome. I second that notion if you could bring them aboard. By then the Disgaea anime may very well be out here, as well as them having Disgaea 2 having been out for a while...

Nippon ichi=win.

seeing that a lot of people that go to Fanime Con like the whole rave atomosphere but dont really go to real raves like Electric Daisy Carnival, Monster Massive, How Sweet It Is, Together As One and so on...none of them really get a chance to learn the art of glowsticking (yes it is a form of dance)

For a Panel idea in 2007 i was hoping to host a glowsticking and/or glowstringing session to teach people the art of dance and glowsticking.  and to show people that raves are NOT bad, its when you go there to take xtc do you defile the whole meaning of a rave.

some of you might have seen me on Saturday evening going at it with strings and such.  I was promoting the glowsticking.com community that which i am a part of.

*i already have a workshop for AX2006 this year so if you are interested. keep an eye out for me at AX2006.

another idea would be a fansubbing panel

As a fansubber myself, i would be glad to teach people how to get involved in fansubbing groups and how to be a part of something that seems meaningful but in the end no appreciates your work and 10,000 leech off of you :)

but yes a fansubbing panel would be nice, teaching people the process of obtaining raws, encoding, typesetting, karoke, translation and the likes.

How about a Cosplay Photography panel where we get people like Lionel, EBK, BSaphire, an i360 rep (Jeff?), Agent Sakura9, Kevin Lillard, etc. up in front to share their experiences & tips, and answer questions :?:

Actually the Para Para panel more than a basic eurobeat panel sounds awesome.  Knowing that some of the para para choreography is very centered around women I could just see that being pure hilarity.

A webcomic Panel! Bring back Snafu-Dave (Can we get Bleedman?), Ian from Machall, Bribe Fred to come back, Try to make amends with Real Life, would be sweet if we could entice the applegeeks guys (but i don't see that happening).

true. thats why you set some rules beforehand, or, make it a late-night panel to accomadate anything that might send it going haywire. i would so love to do that. :D

An AMV critique panel would be cool to do as well.

Take a few well known AMV creators out there and (with producers' permission) they can critique their AMV's in progress as well as mix in an educational segment about the making of AMV's and how to choose your music, anime, and some good programs to use. I think that would be awesome.

For me anyways, I think it would be easier to participate in the AMV contest than the Masquerade...so this could be something to help people become inspired to participate in 2008's AMV contest. ^_^

It'd be great if we had one. Wouldn't know what would go on..maybe teach others new para, or have demonstrations or routines performed. Oh! Also, could throw in some techpara too. In any case, I'd go to it...when I'm not playing the arcade game itself in the game room that is. ^^

That wouldn't be too hard to arrange.  Actually have a para para workshop where they try to teach the Masses to actually dance lol.   That is a good idea XD

Only problem I can think of is getting the room set up for it.  But that is a great idea. =}

Just an idea, why not VGcats? We did have Megatokyo at one point I think...FanimeCon 2004. I'm sure we can try it, if we are lucky ^^;

An E3 review eh? An interesting idea...I mean, at one point in the E-Gaming area we did show random clips from E3 2006, most notably are a few of the new Wii games and XBox360 trailers. Now, we can do that again, but we need to explore how legal that is (from a standpoint).

We per se did have Gamers for Hire (GFH) on site, but because of the scheduling and a couple of circumstances, it was not as popular as we thought. What GFH did is a small panel that involve talking about the Video Gaming Industry and how to get into it. We can bring them back, with other possible panel ideas.

We got a year (ok 11 months) - we'll see what happens. We're all open to new ideas=)

I know Fred probably wont come back out.  Id love to have him since he is such a great guy.  But I am not sure it will happen.  Sakura-Con gets him almost every year =P.  The VGCats guys id love to have too but I think they are East Costers like Fred.  Which would make it challenging.

I'm currently working on a few companies to come in for panels this year.  Square-Enix so far has been the only one that is proving elusive.  But I still have yet to get on my hands and knees to a few people to get them here. =}  So there might yet be a chance.  We do have 11 months.

Any chance of getting a Food demonstration this year?  I know there was a restriction on not being able to cook in the rooms (like a burner etc.).  But maybe we could get a rice cooker hooked up in one of the rooms and do either sushi or onigiri (this sounds so familiar)?  The panel could include a discussion of what to mix in the onigiri (scene from Fruits Basket  :) ), various rice vinegars, flavorings or those cute little seaweed/furikake/etc. mixes?

Just a thought.  Oh, and also the various onigiri molds in addition to being able to form one in the palm of your hand.

I like the onigiri or sushi demo suggestion.  XD  I thought of Furuba as soon as I read onigiri as well.  ^^;  Anyway, even if burners are not allowed, there can still be a demonstration.  Well, I guess it would be a bit more complicated though.  One; the speaker could bring their own pre-cooked rice but then I don't know how that would work 'cause it would be cold by then...  anyways, two; use other materials in place of real food.  Just use the demo to teach the basics and what materials to use.
For example, use playdough or something for rice and other bits of stuff for the vinegar and seasonings.

I just so happen to be hosting the lolita picnic this year so it would be a cool thing to do!

Having it organized is a big plus though, my idea was apparently concise enough and Rena told me:

I vote for someone to do a panel for "How to get your Manga Published". So  you can get an idea on how the industry works and what exactly you need to do to get your work out there.

Also I vote for a JRock panel. The music styles, the clothes, etc.

Well... I obviously should have had a forum account a long time ago... ^-^;;

Since a lot of these suggestions weren't able to be used this year for various reasons, I'll have to make a note of them for next year.

I want a DDR/In The Groove/Stepmania with pads panel in which people can learn how to play. Free practice sessions would be nice.

Anything to stop people from re-centering their feet after every step :evil:

Hmmm. Something like that might be a tad difficult to set up in a panel room. If we get the games in the arcade though, and someone wanted to set up an event for teaching tips and how-to's in the arcade, that might work perhaps?

Even though this thread is pretty much dead...

Self-Publishing Comics/Independent Comics Artist/American Manga panel. I'd like to hear about the work the USA manga artists have done, as well as how the landscape is changing in the comic book scene. Since I'm a comics-based artist myself, it'd be interesting to also hear about the Independent Manga scene (i.e, doujinshi, self-published comics).

How about a "Fangirl, Fanboy: Analysis and Discussion of the Misconceptions of the Anime Fan" panel? After coming into contact with so many faucets of the fandom, it'd be interesting to talk about them, the misconceptions/truths surrounding them, and the impact this has on the anime fan scene.
