I don't remember if they were the same people, but there were some last year, passing out material related to their protest...not that many people do remember them, though.

The Erisian Noosphere of North America will have a public, one-man demonstration next year, I believe~

Believe it or not, those protestors are theyre EVERY year. and Every year we get them to leave via SJPD.

I think the best thing to do is have Fanime Jesus stand with them again and hold up a sign that says "I'm with Stupid people ->"

They damn well better come next year. I didn't have a camera to record all the madness. And some people here only recorded a minute of what happened. So if you protestors are reading this, please come back.(though unlikely they're on the boards XD)

I don't think it gets any better than Jesus crucified on Wolfwood's cross while being stabbed by Leonidas' spear. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/djseifer/Fanime%202008/jesus-freaks-04.jpg)

Um...looking at this I suddenly realize that the main protester guy's shirt is spelt wrong.  It says "Hell is Real!  No warning is to strong!"

To = used for expressing motion or direction toward a point, person, place, or thing approached and reached, as opposed to from.

I think he meant

Too = extremely; very

My point is, when trying to protest the pagan / Godless anime fans of the West Coast...at least make sure your shirt doesn't have any glaring typo's.  It tends to distract from your message...well the typo and the fake Jesus being crucified on a cosplay cross over his shoulder.

That would almost be like talking to a brick wall.  People like those that preach with fear tactics (the "Follow Jesus or be  Damned to Hell" approach) are kind of beyond logic (or reason).

I know that a lot of people disagree, but I'm always a fan of silent opposition to things like this.  When you respond to them they stick around and keep acting like that.  Either completely ignore them (thats what I did this year) or form a line and turn your backs to them.

...

...you've kinda led a sheltered life, haven't you?

No, seriously- think back to every single argument you've ever had. Reason < Emotion. It's how politics works, it's how religion works, it's how human interaction works. While the ideal would be a prioritization of reason over emotion, it's rarely how it actually works out.

Much to my dismay.

I love how they assumed that there were no Christians attending Fanime. (NEWSFLASH, protesters! Anime is a MEDIUM, NOT A GENRE.)

It'd be fun to see them back, haha. I also like to imagine the 'real' Jesus is looking down at it, facepalming like crazy.

Darkse1d, I doubt anyone took the protesters seriously, so no "fanning the flames" there.

For the most part the con goers had a good time rustling the feathers of the protesters. I know I had fun when I began the chanting "Bring out Jesus!" I agree with zoupzuop, I doubt the protesters left an impact outside of us laughing at them. No harm was done to anyone or the con.

I don't care one way or another if they come back.

PS: Darkse1d, I'm not sure if you read the general forum rules or not, but the boards are supposed to remain at a general PG-13 level. So it would be nice if you modified your post and censored out the cussing.

Agreed. I was very frustrated because so many times I see demonstrations like that and I can't help but wonder how many people who might have given the doctrine of Christianity a chance are suddenly shut off to it because of such a negative experience. I agree with Rei in that the message of the Bible boils down to this understanding of love and the good nature that you can nurture within yourself, etc. Looking for the best in people, not using this "righteousness" to pass judgment on the weak and sinful. Those guys probably broke the seven deadly sins before they even walked out the door...so who are they to be judging anyone?

In any case, I hope they don't come back, but I have a feeling they will. To those of you who might encounter them I hope that it doesn't permanently damage your relationship with the beliefs of Christianity. If you've explored it and you just don't think it's for you that's one thing, but for someone (or a group of people) to force it in such a hateful manner upon an unsuspecting group of people is just wrong.

I'm still curious.  What exactly did we do to warrant a protest?  I mean goodness knows we're not perfect and some of the stuff might raise a few eyebrows with some groups.  However, why did we warrant a protest when other conventions don't?  Any ideas?

I think it was more of the demographic that attracted them than anything else. Perhaps if they step in now while the minds are still young and impressionable they can turn them away from the sinful life of cosplay/anime...lol.

That's my belief anyways...not to mention the fact that Anime has a number of controversial representations of divine beings in any number of series. Demons, angels, God and the Devil, etc.

Similar to Harry Potter haters....kinda.

Hey us D&D players have been getting crap from the Christians for near 30 years, way before you Potter fans got any crap. Because we totally sacrifice goats to Boccob in are basements and do rituals on are dice. Actually the last one is basically true ::).

Oh yeah I totally agree. I"m not saying Harry Potter fans were the first, it was just the first thing that came to mind since it's more recent and powerful in my memory...but D&D definitely gets its share of harassment. lol

I say that everyone should bring a "random" protest sign (No on 8, Free Tibet, Not in my back yard,  Save Ferris, et-al) (and use them outside of course) and "dilute" their protest signs in a sea of messages.  ;D

They should be anime related protest signs.  "Giant Robot Mechanics Unionize Now!"  "If You Make 9 Foot Long Swords Illegal Only Criminals Will Have 9 Foot Long Swords."  etc.

I would totally be cool with doing anime-themed protest signs. I bet that there are a lot of Jet Set Radio-themed ones I could do with my Ryth cosplay...

I think that someone needs to get a cosplay group together where everyone cosplays a protester and carries a protest sign. It's the only thing that makes me a little sad that signs are banned in the con. XD;;

I'm aware China was quite a bit smaller, history is actually one of my favorite subjects. I've read many books about that particular time period as well. But the idea of a (posthumously titled) Chinese emperor with a "Free Tibet" sign just seems amusing to me.

Also true, but if people following the movement really cared for the wishes of the Dalai Lama the movement would be entirely peaceful.

Will you get kicked out of Fanime if you form a NON VIOLANT Protest against the protesters?

I mean I will make REAL sure it does not get out of hand and all. So yeah, I am pretty good about protests I know when to back off and I know when to keep going.

I still would like to know as someone said, what did we go to warrant a Protest?

these guys were in front of the convention center, a public area. You all can do whatever you want as long as it isn't illegal....

As for entering the convention center. It is the call of the convention center staff. Since Fanime is running a convention at the center, our desires have considerable sway with the staff. Don't do anything that will piss us off of your badge will be revoked, membership canceled, and escorted from the convention by very sexy rovers, or the sexy police, depending on the infraction....and just cuz you wanna be carried out by sexy men, its no reason to break the rules.

so can anyone answer me two questions?

One- why ARE the protesters there, and is it REALLY neccicery to have the "Turn To Jesus Or Burn In Hell" poster?

Two- I hear Jesus is NOT a protester but just a con-goer and has NOTHING to do with the protesters, but only messes with them. One of my freinds told me that today. I was just wondering if that is true. O.o

im not against them but somewhat afraid of them, yet i respect them and their dedication to their religion. anyone that into it is respectful but still i should like not be intimidated as I am by them lolz

so can anyone answer me two questions?

k

Quote from: xLolitaBoix on March 25, 2009, 02:34:47 PMOne- why ARE the protesters there, and is it REALLY neccicery to have the "Turn To Jesus Or Burn In Hell" poster?

They were there because they see anime, or what is depicted in anime in some way or anther as evil, bad, etc.

Quote from: xLolitaBoix on March 25, 2009, 02:34:47 PMTwo- I hear Jesus is NOT a protester but just a con-goer and has NOTHING to do with the protesters, but only messes with them. One of my freinds told me that today. I was just wondering if that is true. O.o

I don't see Christians dressing up as Jesus to protest anime. They would probably be against it in fact.
Yes, Jesus was a con-goer. Heck, I hugged Jesus. Jesus is awesome.

well that helps a bit. i mean yea i do respect them. some of my friends who sadly are not into anime (T-T*pitty on them* JUST KIDDING i love them like mad)... no they are all "dude how can you tollerate or respect the christians doing that?" my answer is HOW CAN YOU NOT! if you believe in something THAT much than thats great.

i may not agree with the reason they protest honestly XD where in the bible does it say Anime is a sin?

and yeah Jesus is pretty cool lol. and the whole crowd that was out there were all "JESUS JESUS!" when he showed up. lol i remember that.

Somehow something so much as pushing one's beliefs on other people... and telling them to burn in hell if they don't, just because they strongly believe in them... isn't something I would describe as "great". We ca easily respect their religion, but they surely did not respect us.

this is true. i mean i dont agree with the burn in hell thing either. i dont believe in what they say period. but i respect the christian religion and the faith they have... i like the meaning to faith it is so mysterious. Faith- belief in something without proof. the fact that they have that is cool. and yeah they could be a little less rude with that "Turn To Jesus Or Burn In Hell"

Read the old testament... it tells you to prosecute people that don't follow the way of god.

It also tells you other awesome stuff. Like to take your wife to the church after you're married, and to test her purity. The priest takes the dirt from the ground and mixes it with water. The wife then drinks the holy water, and if she gets sick she is not chaste and is then to be put to death for being unpure.

The bible has other awesome gems.

My favorite is still, if the husband dies before a child(male) is born, the wife has to have sex with all of her husband's brothers until she has a male child of his blood.

The above are some of the many reasons I quit Christianity...

But the bible is still full of so much epic win.
Especially if you encounter someone who takes it literally instead of figuratively.

Too bad I have a Mormon Bible, and is likely edited and does not have that stuff.

Point it right next to the protesters.
Or, "Off His Meds".

Yes I am, and I met his father, Mr. Turn To Jesus or Burn In Hell Guy, a few times...even went to his Bday dinner >.<;
I talked to him a few times, but he never asked me about my religious standings or my interests. First off, I don't "belong" to any religion, but I believe in God, and hell I love Anime/Manga, I mean I have been pre-reg. for Fanime Con 09 for months. (and i WAS so excited)....But my B/F doesn't know any of this...I think....I am worried that if/when he does he will hate me, and for some reason that really bothers me...
My B/F had told me that he does these kinds of "protesting" in his "free time" but I never thought he was the same guy from last year!!! And I found who it was just by randomly looking at posts in the forum, and when I saw the picture of the protesters, I was shocked and frightened because I recognized the guy holding the sign. Then in the midst of a minor panic attack (>.<")  I asked my B/F if his dad went to Fanime Con last year and he said no, but then I sent him the picture and agreed that it was his dad, but he just nonchalantly changed the subject. How does one react to this? I usually don't post, but I need advice? or something...eh T.T

Yes I am, and I met his father, Mr. Turn To Jesus or Burn In Hell Guy, a few times...even went to his Bday dinner >.<;

Well, like a lot of people have said here already, its doubtful that the protesters were there because of their views on anime/manga/the like, but simply because of the gathering of people, for publicity's sake. So, I don't know if admitting you enjoy anime or attend the same con he protested at is going to change your relationship between you and your boyfriend's family too much. But who knows, its hard to say.

As for the rest of your problem, not really sure what to tell ya'.

Someone should just stand in front of the protester's face and stare at them. If they claim harassment, then just say "I'm just standing here, just like your holding up a sign and yelling out nonsense".  <_<

How is shouting "god hate gays" not harassment?

There is a thin line between "protesting" and "harassment". What they're doing is clearly harassment.

dictionary.com defines harassment as
to disturb persistently; torment, as with troubles or cares; bother continually; pester; persecute.

and defines protesting as
an expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, or dissent, often in opposition to something a person is powerless to prevent or avoid: a protest against increased taxation.

Example of a protest:
A company is schedule to cut down trees to build new mall. This is a protest because they don't have control of the trees and they can't really avoid.

Example of Harassment:
Holding up signs like "worship jesus or go to hell" that offends people at an Anime convention. I consider this to be harassment because that sign targets individuals who don't believe in religion rather than "Anime" itself.
They don't have control over us but they could avoid it by not getting their kids into this stuff.

What Westboro Baptist Church is doing is not protesting but harassing people believe they some of the people there don't believe what they believe.

What we could do is get our lawyers ready if they come again but then again, thats a bit harsh.

sorry, this is what the CC Civic Code defines as harassment:

QuoteFor the purposes of this section, "harassment" is unlawful violence, a credible threat of violence, or a knowing and willful course of conduct directed at a specific person that seriously alarms, annoys, or harasses the person, and that serves no legitimate purpose. The course of conduct must be such as would cause a reasonable person to suffer substantial emotional distress, and must actually cause substantial emotional distress to the plaintiff.

and emotional stress must be verified by a psychologist....

Just a suggestion. ^^ Although we could also advert everyone inside the con while the protesters are doing their crappy attention craving rant. Besides, with their huge sign, they don't follow people in. I almost always see these protesters outdoors, so if we go inside, the attention is off them until they're gone.

You know, what people should do when the Protesters come back is to ignore them. WE give them POWER to continue on talking and saying such things. They would get bored because they would be tlaking to air. So what peopel should do is ignore them. Ignoring them is a power we should use them give them our power. I know it will be difficult for some of you (or most of you, I dont know) but please, ignore them and maybe then, they will dissapear and we can continue to enjoy Fanime without wasting our precious time and money (by that I mean it cost us to get there, buy the badge, etc.)

Again, we give them power by giving ours. We don't need to give them a piece of our mind, they aren't worth talking to and it should be obvious.

Don't let them ruin your fun, happy-go-lucky day. Go on and ignore them and enjoy your time at Fanime :3 that way no one will get arrested or hurt! ^^

I disagree. Not everyone wants them to go away. For instance, I don't. They are a fun attraction to laugh at. I gladly welcome them to Fanime so that they may amuse me.

They were indeed there today.

There was even a bus!

I don't know if Jesus appeared, though.

In all honesty, what they're doing is legal, and unfortunately it'll be *us* who gets in trouble if we lose our cool. Just remember: Do not feed the trolls. They do this to all kinds of conventions indiscriminately. Don't let them win; don't let them rile you up.

Instead, snap a few happy pictures with them and Jesus!

QFT

And Tony's right guys per the SJPD, the preachers are well within the law. They also abide by the PD's demands. Apparently they show up for any large event at the SJCC. We're just another blip on the list. They were not arrested Saturday; they just left after the crowd was dispersed. Since things seemed to go right back to normal after this dispersion i.e – the tunka tunka dance by the internets I would say they are not that big of a deal anyways.

This years group of "preachers"/"witness" people were rude, loud, uncaring, and thoughtless in my own opinion. I went out there to move the attendees out of the drop off area (prior to rovers being able to come out) and when I asked the attendees to turn down the music and listen to my request to please move back behind the cement pillars and out of the drop off area... well the attendees were AWESOME and did what I asked. I had to keep asking them though.. Not because they wouldn't do it... they couldn't HEAR me.

I also asked the Preacher Guy who was yelling that we were all sinners and needed to repent because only Jesus could save our souls....so on and so forth... just ignored my request for a moment to be heard so that the safety of the "supposed sinners" bodies could be insured as they were asked to move back behind the cement pillars at the drop off area.

The result was a huge strain to my voice.

A later conversation with the female holding the sign only proved that they were not listening to anyone who came up to them whom did not want to turn to Jesus for fear of burning in Hell.

The ensuing "witnessing" to the attendees proved to me disheartening. The stance of the "preacher" in the photo that was taken is just as it was commented to be. I too would like to thank all those that were out there during the demonstration who were very well behaved and listened to the Fanime staff (con ops, rovers and my staff I know were out there ^^)

I had three different parents who wanted to complain about the protesters to Fanime because they thought "WE (Fanime)" were not doing anything about it... I assured them that we were and the protesters were within their rights to stand and "witness" in that location. Each one left our conversation feeling annoyed by the protesters and more at ease knowing Fanime was doing all it could.

Is there anything we can do to stop this kind of behavior from them (the protesters) to us? If we are doing all that we can do... what else is there?

I would also like to join Calvin, Tyler, and BSaphire in thanking our attendees for cooperating with the convention staff.  I was thanking God that there was only one group refusing to move and insisting on yelling, which ironically was the group "preaching".

I also thank Jesus, and hope he returns next year.

B,

Bald Mike and I spoke with the SJPD that responded to the call on Saturday. We were both informed that they preachers were well within the law and 1st amendment. Also keep in mind that where they were is considered public property and not con grounds...

AKA - We got nothin'

Though they may not listen to us (con staff) they definitely fell in line when SJ's finest arrived. These guys know how to play the game and they play it well. The best thing we can do it ultimately ignore them. Remember:

3The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.
4Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;
5Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

Funny little chat my friend and some girl got in with a protester...

Girl: I go to church and that doesn't make me a sinner.

Protester: I go to starbucks and that doesn't make me a coffee.

Friend: I go to a anime convention that doesn't make me a cartoon.

The protesters logic didn't make sense. Oh and another said to my friend that he will dance in his blood afer or when armageddon comes, ask NickZebra he was there when it happend. I'm guessing they're protestant because they had a sign that said catholics are evil.

I love these guys...

QFT.  One good aspect of being locked in my room most of the day dealing with masquerade stuff is that I didn't have to deal with these bozos.  I think most of my friends have heard my ranting (and I can tell my tone of voice changes markedly when talking about these guys), and they know that this group sickens me more than it does any of them.  Whatever happened to showing God's love to others by showing you know, God's love?   Not trying to scare people.  Makes me sick.  And they came back Monday?  >.<

The "Jesus Loves You" guy was hella cool. So nice about it.

I was the guy dancing behind the protesters in my Sarah Palin mask. Can't wait till they come back next year!

hey guys! its jesus! i just wanted to thank all the rovers for keeping it a peaceful and safe year. i want to thank also the jesus loves you guy for being cool. just as a note for next year when they come back(you know they will) help the rovers do their job and keep the driveway/ loading zone that separated fanime from the protesters clear. if you wanna go to the other side go around and stay on sidewalks.

with that said.. awesome job. we showed them once again that we mean serious business

So I was thinking it could be fun if they showed up next year.

I think this time instead of standing in front of them and opening my black wing, I would bring my Tri-Gun Cross instead.

We could get all the cosplayers that have any sort of religious references to them and stand in front of the picketers facing the convention center.

A line of Wolfwood's and Crosses would make an awesome picture with the protesters in the background.

We can make some of our own signs as well:  "Jesus loves cosplayers too!"  (This is response with the "Just be your selves" references they were making).

Sound like fun?  Or a little to twisted?  Any other Ideas?

IMO It's a bad idea. It's giving them what they want and adding more fuel to the fire. Sooner or later this is going to become a broken record

- Preachers come to con and preach
- Fans get annoyed or counter protest
- Fans devise scheme to try and annoy preachers by using anime and internet meme references that the preachers wouldn't know from Adam (da dum bum ching!)
- SJPD is call and annoyed themselves since according to the law preachers have done nothing wrong (again)
- Rovers are called in to disperse the fans and everything goes back to normal

Lather, Rinse, Repeat 365 days from incident.

I still think you should have taken my suggestion Monday and led the crowd near the fountain in a song of Kumbaya. :D

But yeah, everyone from our convention was extremely nice, polite and understanding.  :)

Also, I was not out there for the day the Jesus Loves You Guy came out (I was Rovering another location), but I heard only positive things about him.

<3 also.

Monday went wonderfully smoothly.  Everyone just gathered around Jesus by the fountain and took some pictures with our nice mobile background that regularly shows up.

I know it's not as fun, but it's a lot safer and honestly, is probably a better way of dealing with them since you probably have as a good a chance of convincing them to leave with a counter-gathering as they have of converting you to their religion through their unique style of preaching.

If people do want to go talk to the "preachers", we just want to limit it to small groups (no more than one or two talking to each of them) so that we don't have large crowds blocking the way, which was the issue SJPD got called out to handle on Saturday.

Oh, it's days like that I wish I had a magical universal remote control so that I could hit "Mute" or at least put it on "Espanol" (or "Nihongo" in the spirit of Fanime).

Well here is a side note to my previous post...
As I was talking to the lady holding the "turn to Jesus..." sign there was a guy in a yellow shirt with an A on it who was holding a small Jesus loves you sign. He heard everything I was saying to the woman and was also discouraged by her lack of "Hearing" me and her rudeness towards me. He just shook his head in disbelief.

I later saw him out in front right by the Marriott (after the other protesters had left) and the first words out of his mouth was "I was not with them." I stuck my hand out to shake his hand and said, "I know, that is why I wanted to thank you for showing that God is love and kindness." He replied, "I'm sorry they did that and most of the people think I am with them." I told him to just keep on doing it the way he was and it would be ok. He seem to be more at ease after that. I wish he had come back Monday.

So for what it is worth not all of them were obnoxious... Just the one's screaming for four hours and being antagonistic. There are those out there who are trying to reflect the love ^^)

I think I talked to that guy too.  Definitely was a lot more reasonable than the others.  He said that he just goes to every convention.  Wherever there's a lot of people.  Fanime isn't some special thing to him.

This is the same for all of the protestors we saw. The police informed us (Rovers) of this. Fanime isn't something special to them and they do it for all large gatherings at the SJCC.

How many gatherings can they claim to do that?

Give me my special points, darnit.

On my way back from Pizza My Heart, I had to re-enter the con center via the entrance on the Marriott side so I could avoid the protesters.

It was all good though. Got to regroup with my Ace Attorney gathering buddies by taking this route.

those protesters were definitely almost the highlight of my fanime weekend right below the Momoi concert and the Sailor Moon panel hosted by a sexy trap

Sigh...I was trying to run a gathering of over 100 people during their screaming rampage.  My voice is still a little raw.  lol.

However, I was proud of the Naruto cosplayers at the gathering for focusing on the gathering and ignoring the protesters.  They simply weren't worth our time.  We had much more fun things to do.

I didn't even go down near the protesters, so I can't comment on what was happening there.  However, things up at the gathering went well.  Ignoring worked well for me.

agree'd. i talked to him for almost ten minutes. he told me that he disaproved of what the protesters were doing, and he was there to show support for the con goers.
also, i was holding the Jesus Loves Hentai sign up for a while, but had to run back to my room and ended up giving it to some guy, along with my sharpie.

I'm watching through all the videos now. =P

My friend says we should post up signs.

Pointed toward the bus stop "Free Speech Zone".

Toward the convention "Don't Feed the Trolls"
