Hello all!

Fanime's annual AMV competition is now accepting entries. Check out the rules below and send us your best!

The Basics:

   
• AMVs must be at least 30 seconds long, and no longer than 6 minutes.
• We allow up to 4 entries per person/group; only 1 video per category allowed.
• No official subtitles, TV broadcast watermarks or other forms of watermarks.
• No personal identifiers of any kind in all categories EXCEPT Trailer. This includes bumpers, titles, logos, credits, editor-made watermarks, or editor names within the video. If your video violates this rule, you will be contacted to make changes, if time allows.
• No AMV Hell-style shorts compilation videos allowed.
• Videos that have been previously submitted to a Fanime AMV competition will not be accepted.
• Video must have publicly premiered after July 1, 2018. If you made your video before the cut-off but have not shared it publicly online or entered a contest with it, you may enter it.
• AMVs must contain at least 70% anime, manga, or video game footage.
• AMVs containing footage released in HD/Blu-Ray format must be at least 720p. Older footage is permitted at a minimum of 480p.
• Entered AMVs should attempt to maintain a PG-13 or lower level of violence/nudity/vulgarity. If in doubt, send it ASAP and we'll let you know if it meets our guidelines.

Awards Fanime's AMV contest wouldn't be complete without great prizes. We're offering $75 Amazon gift codes to every category winner, plus $100 Amazon gift codes to our Best in Show winners. Entrants are eligible for multiple prizes, so if you win multiple categories, you're looking at a really big prize!

Prizes will be sent to winners who are not able to attend, but please try to make it to the awards ceremony if you're in attendance! More details on the award ceremony will be made available closer to the convention.

Disqualification Rules:

• Videos containing all or a portion of another editor's AMV or other unique creation (MAD, MMD, SFM, GMOD, etc) will be disqualified and the submitter of said video will be permanently banned from all subsequent contests.
• Participants who submit videos that are not their own will also be banned permanently.
• Refusal to provide one's legal name will result in disqualification from the contest.

Judging & Use:
Videos will be prescreened and judged prior to the convention. The judges reserve the right to move a video to another category if they feel it would be a better fit.
Fanime reserves the right to use submitted AMVs during the 2019 convention and future Fanime conventions, regardless of Finalist status.

Due Date:

Competing AMVs and their submission form are due by April 30, 2019 at 11:59 P.M. PDT.

This year's theme at Fanimecon is gaming! As a result, we're extending a special invite to enter video game music videos and AMVs containing gaming-themed anime (No Game No Life, Sword Art Online, Recovery of an MMO Junkie, etc). Trailers containing video games or based on a video game movie theme will also qualify. A special award will be presented to the best video game-themed video submitted to the contest this year.

This is part suggestion and part question.

I was wondering if there might be any chance of a sort of "State of the Con" report from one of the higher-ups PRIOR to Fanime. I realize from the many posts here that most of what goes on behind-the-scenes is top-secret and can't be divulged to the public, so that might cause a problem. However, that being said, I think I speak for many of us when I say that this year's multitude of problems caused a serious backlash with the fans and has a lot of us concerned regarding next year; not just for registration, but all the other burps and hiccups that occurred over the course of the con.

With that in mind, I would personally appreciate (and anyone who feels similarly or dissimilarly, please speak your mind) hearing something- anything- from the high mucky-mucks of Fanime prior to registration opening for 2014. I don't think it's a lot of ask. Plenty of businesses and companies issue letters when something's gone very wrong and they want to reinstill faith in their customers/shareholders/partners. 2013 was a year where a lot of things went very wrong. I realize that fanime.com's homepage currently contains a letter from Milton Le, Director of Marketing, which does touch on a lot of the problems that occurred and attempts to reassure us that things will be done. The problem is, similar reassurance came at the end of 2012 (with admittedly, the biggest problem being registration's backup due to an unforeseeable and uncontrollable power outage) and 2013 turned out to be a much bigger mess. In addition, seens to how we were all asked to send in comments/complaints, someone from Fanime actually addressing the biggest complaints received would be a nice gesture. Some have posted here with concerns that our emails fell on deaf ears (which I personally doubt, but talking to a faceless, nameless webform wall does lack the personal touch.)

I realize this is a difficult request since Fanime cannot divulge certain private information to us, especially for security's sake. But I don't think I'm alone when I say that even something vague being said would be better than nothing to try and encourage the public that improvements have already been set in place. I say this as a concerned fan with more than a decade of Fanimes under my belt who nonetheless already feels hesitant to register for 2014, and that if indeed 2014 is plagued with as many (or more) problems, will most likely not return for any further Fanimes.

I don't know much about these. They're big publications, looks like 1 was put out per month,  around 350+ pages per magazine/book. They're all in Japanese. It looks like the manga "Girl Friends" was featured in several of these. The stories don't look 100% Shojo-Ai/Yuri but there's definitely a bunch of them.

The full title is "Comic High: Girlish Comics For Boys and Girls". I have a few of them. If anyone thinks they might be interested, I'll list the exact volume #s and such.

Looking to sell @ Fanime, but I can ship if necessary.

This is kind of two questions. I know the schedule folks have tons of things to juggle, no biggie. However, my question is, do the schedule people intend for there to be events this year prior to pre-reg/early-reg opening at 7? Or are any events for Thurs starting after reg opens?

Will badges be mandatory for con stuff Thursday? I know in prior years it sometimes hasn't been depending on scheduling and last year's power outage.

I dunno if this is the right section, but... do the food vendors on the concourse (not the convention center fare but like the boba place, psycho donuts, the ramen stand, last year's tai-yaki) and even the flying hands massage guy... do they rent that space via Fanime/ARG, or the con center itself? Just curious.

Does anyone know if the saint claire offered any suites this year for fanime rates? If so, did anyone stay in one, and what were they like? Thanks  :)

So this year in the immensely long pre/early pickup line on Thursday I noticed people sitting on the floor and some had foldable chairs they would pick up and move down the line with, then sit back down. Is a foldable/portable chair OK with the reg and rover staff, for future cons? I think its a fantastic idea so long as it doesn't get in the way or injure others, but somehow I kept expecting those folks to get yelled at by the rovers for that exact reason. I'd really like to know either way.

So me and a friend saw Video Room 2 (I think) playing Death Note Abridged, at about 8 or 9, just before starting up Nescaflowne. We can't find it online. Any info on who it was by and where I can find it? Lots of DNAs on youtube but not the right ones...

I just checked the schedule and saw that the FMVs are listed for fri and sat like a few years ago. We're doing dual screenings again? Or is this a schedule flub?

Two questions. One, last year, were there separate lines for prereg and early reg, or were they lumped into one? I went early reg last year and the line on day zero was looooooong. Wondering if there's an advantage to pre reg beyond the shiny badge.

Second and more importantly, one of the folks I'll be travelling with has a government ID that will have expired by the time the con rolls around. Do they need to renew it, or is it sufficient seens to how their identity won't magically change just cause of a date? Thanks.

Hopefully this hasn't been posted about the 2011 con yet- if so, sorry. Will the con be having the usual Day 0 pre-reg setup like prior years on the Thursday before the con officially starts? I just need to know so I can set up my arrival time and when to book a hotel for and such... thanks a bunch :)

I just wanted to post what I thought about the FMV Finalist showings this year.  Anyone else feel free to join me.

I think this year was a huge step up from last year. As a finalist, I was greeted kindly by the coordinator, who was both polite and friendly and made sure that all of the editors were taken care of.  In prior years, it's been difficult to find anyone who knows anything about editor priority seating.  I've had to convince random staff members that I'm an editor, or even just gotten lumped in line with everyone else.  It doesn't seem like much, but this was an important aspect to me.

The viewing itself was pretty good.  The sound quality initially was poor, with the bass cranked up way too high, but it was corrected around the 3rd video, which helped a lot.  I was able to make out lyrics this year (for most videos) which is also a plus.  Nothing sucks as badly as not being able to understand the words that us editors usually base our videos off of in the first place.  One big negative I have to point out is that no time was given for us to vote.  In prior years, we've either been allowed to vote at the end of each category, or a short snippet of each video is shown at the very end with the names of the vid so we can go "Oh yeah, I liked that one" and scribble down its name.  That was kind of harsh for the viewer's choice, as I'm sure there were at least some people who didn't remember which video they wanted to vote for.  I hope this is amended next year.  Also, I noticed during the awards ceremony that the judges' winner for Experimental wasn't even shown during the finals. What happened?  It was a pretty rad video, too.  Technical difficulties happen, though, so it's understandable.

One thing I think is really important is to list the name of the anime and the song used in the videos.  A lot of industry people feel that AMVs are stealing money from them, but I often watch a video and think, "Wow, that show looks great!" and then look for it. I'm of the opinion that it's important to list the anime, especially if it could result in a viewer walking straight to the dealer's room and hunting down a DVD of it.  The anime industry needs all the help it can get, after all.

Obviously the prizes this year are a great new addition.  A lot of money went into them and I'm sure the winning editors all appreciate it.

I personally feel that the categories could have been equalized a bit (in terms of number of finalists) but obviously that's partially due to what is entered into each category and is actually of quality to make the finals.  I was glad to see that the video quality itself was handled well.  In 2008 everything was interlaced and looked dreadful, shaky and all.  No such problems this year. 

My only other concern is the choice of judges this year.  Does anyone know if the judges had any prior knowledge of anime?  It's nice to have a video judged mostly upon its artistic and technical qualities, but I do feel that if they didn't have knowledge of at least some anime, some of what the editors were doing might have been lost on them.  For example, if a video follows a linear story matching that of the original anime, or if they invent a new story on their own that matches the music.  These kinds of things stand out to people familiar with the shows, but might not mean anything to art students.  Just wondering.  Overall, though, I think this year was a great job.  Thank you!

I'm a little disappointed that the pre-reg closing date wasn't announced anywhere on the front page or the twitter account like in prior years.  There wasn't any warning given unless you went to the registration page itself.  Even the Registration FAQ pinned on the board didn't announce the date.  Normally I put off pre-reg as long as I can because of financial issues, and grab one at the last minute possible when it's noted on the front page... no such luck this year.  Is there any hope for an extension like in some prior years?  I'm seriously bummed, I've never attended (6 years now) without a pre-reg badge.

So, has anyone else tried hooking up a console to a Mariott television yet?  I've got a flatpanel, I don't know if everyone does.  Though chances are we all do.  It's got the A/V ports set up on the side, but when we plugged in the XBOX, nothing happened.  Couldn't find a channel to view it.  Eventually we called up "At your service", who consulted with a techie, and informed us that the Mariott has set it up so that you can't hook up things like consoles to your TVs.  I guess to route more people to their pay per view and crap.  Has anyone found a work around yet?  We've scoured all the channels, no luck, and the remote control they've given is pretty simplistic so I can't try all the things I could if I have the one I've got at home.

EITHER WAY, this is a drag.  One of the reasons folks have been coming to this hotel instead of the Hilton is that you can hook up your game consoles or whatever, whereas prior to the Hilton renovation (I don't know if it's possible now or not) you couldn't.  Now we can't here either.  There's probably going to be a lot of people tomorrow night raging about this...  Ho hum...  I'm just disappointed, I wouldn't have dragged the 360 here if I'd known. :( 

Anyone got any pics of this available yet?  I didn't get to go, didn't even see the cosplay gathering list until the evening after it had happened, but I'd love to see who showed up!
