We do a lot of walking, we're crazy fun to hang out with, we love to help you out, and make sure the con is an enjoyable place for everyone.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please let me know at Steve @ Fanime.com
Please fill out this application and send it to me, or print it, fill it out, and hand it in to me at a meeting.

Quick Questions:
Why do you want to be a member of the Fanime Rovers team?
Rovers is staffed 24 hours a day during the con, when will you be available to work?
(We want everyone to enjoy the con so if there are any specific events or panels you would like to attend please note them here including time and day.)
Essay Questions:
Please answer these questions fully to the best of your ability.
1.What is a Rover at Fanime?
2.In stressful situations, how do you normally handle yourself?
3.In this scenario, describe how you would handle the situation. Be as detailed as possible.
An individual has been accused of stealing from the Dealer's room. How would you approach or deal with the situation?
Below is a basic list of rules all Rovers staff members must follow at all times during the con.
#1 Enjoy the Con! An unhappy staffer is useless to us.
#2 Follow all the rules. It's simple we can't enforce the rules when we are breaking the rules.
#3 No alcohol or drug consumption while on shift or on con property! We have a zero tolerance policy, if you are of age and want to drink off shift DO NOT return to work or enter the con while under the influence.
#4 No inappropriate interaction between fellow staff members or attendees. This is a no brainer just don't say do or anything that would be deemed unacceptable outside Fanime and you should be fine.
#5 Do not abuse the system or your status as staff member. Being on staff is a privilege not a right do not abuse it.
Note: Any violation may lead to removal of your staff badge and/or expulsion from the con.

Starting to Accept Applications that early eh?
ha ha ;D
I talked to Deonchan about being a Rover. I'd like to make sure I get squared away on this.
So yeah...I wanna be assimilated.
What's the pros and cons of being a Rover? Are taking anyone in? And what are the qualifications of being a Rover? What if you don't get well with other Rovers?
Yeah, I have too many questions :P
Qualifications for being a rover
1) You must be 18+
2) You must have a customer service demeanor. Friendly, personable, and responsible.
Pros of being a Rover
1) Free Rover T-shirt
2) Free entry into con via staff badge.
3) Custom exclusive Rovers Badge.
4) You get to work (help with line control) and then get into any event (except VIP events, those are selective)
Cons of being a Rover
1) You have to work 24 hours the entire con (Total hours, which is true of all staff)
2) You will be walking a lot.
3) You may have to deal with a lot of people who complain...this is the nature of customer service.
4) You "can't" have crazy cosplays while on duty.
5) You answer to a tyrannical boss who enjoys making your life difficult (Just kidding, we're all pretty laid back)
Duties of being a Rover (You won't get assigned to do all of them, but all rovers are trained in all of these)
1) Line control
2) General Concourse roving
3) Escort duties
4) Peace bonding
5) Weapon policy enforcement
6) General Convention Policy Enforcement
7) Code of Conduct Enforcement
It sounds like a lot, but honestly, make a few training meetings, get to know the people, be qualified. You won't have issues. If you do, well, we're pretty good at taking care of them.
-Steve
We could count work during Pre-Reg Pickup apart of the 24-hours, can't we?
Even so, I am definitely considering this. It would be cool to meet fellow staff and help out the Con.
And to destroy JTchinoy and his Anti-Pocky Rebellion =P
Yes, excellent.
I would like to join rovers. When is the next training meeting going on?

agree.
are the meetings pretty regularly scheduled so people'd know a few weeks ahead of time?
The 2009 con was my first fanime and man, was it awesome. I would love to be able to help out next year. I'm not exactly sure what the variety of staff positions is like, but I could quite possibly be interested in joining the rovers. Any more info would be great ^_^
Meetings are once or twice a month, usually a pre-determined location...although if none is currently scheduled, i'll let you all know by email.
I usually will give you 2 weeks notice. Minimum.
Maybe if theyre interested in joining.... should we mention the beach party this weekend? :P
or is it Rovers [who worked this year only?] exclusive? :P
All in all...being a rover is fairly easy. Even easier if you have customer service background. You need to know how to be polite, even when someone is being rude to you. So, in that regard patience is a must.
It also helps if you have the ability to approach someone or a group of someones and be able to tell them in a nice manner that they cannot be doing something, when that something is deemed against con policy.
Quote from: DentyneIce408 on July 19, 2009, 11:36:08 AM
What if you don't get along well with other Rovers?
There is always the option to work a shift on the opposite spectrum of the person you have issues with. Other than that, you can simply avoid speaking with them if it's really a big issue. Causing a scene with someone would most likely see you removed from Rovers.

I believe Thursday evening counts towards hours, yes. However, the majority of the staff usually ends up working all of the days (usually we need everybody we can get our hands on, especially during the larger event times.) We also usually have a gathering on Monday for dinner, once the Con begins closing down.

There probably will not be an
official training meeting for quite a while, since Fanime 2010 is still a ways off. I could be wrong though. It's all up to Mike.

There are many different groups in which you can volunteer for.
Your best bet though is probably something in the Operations category. This includes ConOps, Tech, Logistics, Rovers, and Volunteers. I don't really know the ins and outs of each of those groups, but I'm sure more information will surface in these forums as it gets closer to Fanime time.

I'm sure you *could* invite them, but people would be like, "Hey, I don't remember you. You weren't a rover! Wtf?" and then sand would be thrown in their eyes. Once the confusion would be cleared up we would then realize they were possible new Rovers prospects. In which case we would then proceed with the ritual "jumping" it takes in order to join our elite gang.

DEAR GOD NO
Someone is definitely starting to recruit early. Aiming for 100+ Rovers for 2010? =P
Runewitt should definitely join. Maybe make 'em go and watch the dances very carefully.
Rovers was pretty fun, didn't get a lot of the drama. Thankfully most con goers have their common sense about them. At least the ones I run into. Remember to sleep at least some. Especially you Steve.
I'm kinda sad that I missed the BBQ now.

Fanime Staff meeting is going to be NOV 22.
Any plans / idea when our first rovers meet-and-greet [party] would be? :D
No idea when/where our first Rovers meeting will be. Jerry wanna volunteer? I'm not looking to do a Rovers meeting this coming Sunday, because it's logistically not a good day to do it. But I will say sometime in the beginning of December would be good.

Hey Steve. I'm 18 after Fanime is over. >_< Could I still apply or not?
I'm pretty sure our new rules say that you have to be 18 by the Start of Con.
I dont think it works if you turn 18 after Con... >_<
that or maybe it has to be addressed by our bosses over at Con Ops.
What say you o wise and knowledgeable Con Ops/ HR ? :)
18 @ start of con...
sorry.
So Steve and I are fans of a webisode series called " The Guild "
Zog one of our more social Rovers, who builds great rapport with the ppl in the lines offered a suggestion that we could possible learn a mini speech to help explain why Rovers do what we do.
*** *** ***
[ZOG]: To clarify: Your group should be behind the others who arrived previously.
[CON GOER]: Why?
[ZOG]: You're asking me why, having just arrived, you need to be at the back of the line?
Let me offer you a historical perspective. At the beginning of the common era, people
attending events simply gathered en mass, clustered and clumped together in an
unorganized manner.
After several thousand years of this, they slowly gravitated to
the back of individual fellows, and began to stand behind one another in a horizontal fashion,
forming what they now commonly refer to as "THE LINE."
Going against that flies in the face of thousands of years of evolution, and encourages UTTER CHAOS!!!
i guess you haven't been to Europe.....if they don't ask you to queue....they don't
You obviously don't watch "The Guild"...the lines are from that web show :P
I guess the Guild is unfamiliar with line behavior abroad.....
Haha, it is true. The guild is a MMO based web show making fun of the social stereotypes of MMO gamers...and you and I know both know how gamers have no lives outside of Cyberspace :P (Unless you talk about Chinese gold farmers)

helping hands - in the sense we do general customer service and keep the crowds and lines in check. sorta like hall monitors but WAY cooler. 8)
righteous fist? - No. We are NOT to have any form of physical contact with even roudy Con-goers. Thats a liability issue, Thats why we have uniformed SJ PD on site.
cooler then hall monitors you say? i dont know hall monitors are pretty cool
hehe i was joking about the whole fist thing, better to be a peacekeeper
Word on zee street is there will be a Rover's meeting next month. We have a tentative date and location!
Hint: The tentative date is not the same day as the General Staff Meeting
Another Hint: The tentative location is NOT in San Jose...
Stay tuned....
Correction: THERE WILL be a Rover's meeting next month. Once I get the exact address I'll post the info here and prob a new thread.
Glad to see the Black Suit rovers will be back in style.
Though I got mistaken for one at the BWBall last year when I was the instructor and I would stand outside the door taking a break and getting some air people showed their badges.
Though still glad to see the rovers are bringing back the suit.
just FYI - i think we may have had some "icon/branding" issues with what we jokingly called "black suits" :P
then again it may still need approval from our higher ups just to make sure we dont accidentally set a precedent by dressing up as a "black suited" individual(s)
NOTE TO ALL:
NOT ALL Rovers are dressed nicely in black, AND
NOT ALL DRESSED in BLack people ARE STAFF.
keep in mind when approached or given "polite" instructions from ANY CON Goer [staff or not] ----
you have the right to look at [not take] their badge and vice versa.
we dont want any posers giving our staff a bad rep. >:(
nor do we want our con goers causing any trouble.
safe, fun and hopefully mostly sane will be good rules to follow at fanime ;)

I can send the app now, since I have it. All messages I get are set up to be sent to my email as well...just incase.
As long as you can make the future meetings for training, then you are not too late.
All righty.
I am currently located in Fresno. :/ Will that be a problem?
Is anyone else in Rovers, located in Fresno? O.o
No clue. :-X
Rovers is a lot of fun and if you want to experience con.. this is the way to go. if you wanna just do your own thing this is the way to go if you want to do stupid shit... StAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ROVERS. but seriously Rovers is one of the best places to be at con. if you think you can handle it do eet.
@ Short_storiesgl - please no swearing - it does not reflect properly towards our execs as well as other con-goers out there --- please edit.
@ XphobiaX - the position basically does require alot of time, dedication and proper training - we're the most seen, heard, known, and visually marked by the rest of the Con-goers around [as well as exec staff of course] so there is a bit of pressure to perform and perform well.
The point is, you do have to eventually show up at one of our meetings - It's required to at least be present to ONE meeting at the minimum and get the information, training and approval from our Rovers Department heads to get your approval and staff invite code.
I'd suggest getting in touch with Steve or e-mails the Rovers e-mail. Thanks.
Yeah, you tell me every year I should join rovers. XD
Thanks for the info. ;)
I already signed up and gotten an email from Steve. So I'll just shoot him an email.
whats up fellas, newbie rover here!
After having the wonderful experience of volunteering for Fanime '09, I hope to join the Rover team. (If not, I'll see you guys there as a volunteer again.) Rover's were the best people in the convention--my personal experience, anyway.
Does anyone recall the "manhandle" codeword? Fun times.
Yo Steve ---
I just realized we've had easily more than 3+ black suits in one place at one time... so why didnt we ever do something like this?
you know you want to see this link:

3, 2, 1, AGENTS are GO!!!
we could totally elite beat agents rick roll the protesters this year [just a joke of course] too bad Zog wont be around for something like this... i could totally see him getting fan girls with a dance routine.
Wow Jerry.... I don't think I'd be caught dead doing that....lol. I'd have to have good amounts of alcohol in me first at least....and that's not allowed while on duty....so yeah. ::)
I rather we embarrass ourselves in other ways than that...
Jerry, I'm with Steve on this one, there are so many other ways we could embaress ourselves and have more fun doing it.
and Tyler, I don't know about you, but there isn't enough alcohol.
two Tylers?!?!.......I'm scared....
Is rovers still recruiting for staff?
Anddd how can you volunteer for rovers if you can't do staff? :) Thanks!
@ the Makaki - Unfortunately the Staff list is now closed. :<
You may want to e-mail my Rovers Dept Head at Rovers[At]Fanime[dot]com but im pretty certain that we cant except any more "staff" since the staff list is closed.
We do still have meetings, so if your interested in going despite not being "officially" on staff, again double check with our heads and if theyre okay with it, at least you'll learn about our group.
Volunteers is always looking for help! I think their e-mail might be Volunteers[at]Fanime[dot]com
and if not, then just enjoy the Con as an attendee or make friends with staff and hang out while we work/play during the Con.
Get Hype for Fanime! :D

@ Steve - Could you help me moderate the Weapons policy threads and sub forums?
http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,13329.0.html
things are getting a bit out of hand in there, and ppl are getting restless because of the LACK of the 2010 weapons policy with less than 40 days left before Con.
Could you get in touch with the Dept Head guys and post a link pretty please?
Me, BSaphire, and some of the cosplayers would greatly appreciate it :D
I'll check with our writers today and see if we can get the policy up Jerry.
Thanks Calvin, you may also want to regulate in that thread I mentioned.
I've been trying to keep the peace there, but some posters are trying to make us look bad. and I cant really stand for that. :-\
point them out and I'll edit them out O:-) JK....kinda :)
But honestly, I don't check that sub forum regularly: too many posts. Let me know if there is an issue and I can make things magically happen.
I applied! :]
