Title: 2019 Old School (Pre-2001) Cosplay Gathering
Post by: InsaneDavid on October 31, 2018, 04:16:17 PM
Greetings old school cosplayers!  Last year's Old School Gathering was spectacular, thank you all for your amazing attendance, awesome cosplay, and for once again putting up with me as everyone's favorite middle-aged nanpa boy - Ryo Saeba!  Last year was my third year hosting the gathering and of course I'm doing it again!  Continuing the tradition of the gathering that got me into cosplay, I announce the...

Fanime 2019 Old School (Pre-2001) Cosplay Gathering!

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.classicplastic.net%2Fzzforums%2Ffanime%2F2019-OldSchoolCosplayGathering-002s.jpg&hash=d35a887537deee2d12739803999fc3aa890cdf70)

Come celebrate the rich history of Japanese entertainment culture!

This is a hugely open gathering for those of you / us who cosplay as characters from the previous century.  Essentially if your cosplay character appears in Anime, Manga, Video Games or Live Action that began PRIOR to 2001, then this is the gathering for you!  Although I like to have a decidedly Japanese lean to this gathering, it is not completely exclusive.

Day : Friday, May 24th (Day 1).
Time : 6PM - 7PM.
Meeting Place (MP) : Same as Location, Gatherings G3.
Location (L) : Gatherings G3, Downstairs Tiered Platform.

This will be our fourth year hosting! We will be at the same location as 2018 - turn right from the main Convention Center entrance, and head down the stairs to the video rooms on the lower level.  We will be on the downstairs wooden tiered platforms between the stairs and the escalators.

Gatherings G3 is the wooden tiered platform area along the stairs that lead down to the video rooms on the lower level.  As we are more prepared to host at this location, we will be better with crowd management this year, giving cosplayers more space to get in and out of photographs.

Yes, I will actually remember the megaphone!

Cosplayers : If you would like, please post who your cosplay character is, what title it is from and what year you are representing!  As this gathering is a total wildcard mix of different characters, series, studios, and genres - spanning time rather than properties - a definitive list is otherwise not provided.  Part of the fun of the OSCG is seeing just who shows up.

Legal Statement : Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

Photography Order : If there is any specific setup or shot you would like, just let me know!  This gathering is to celebrate all of us as cosplayers who keep the vintage fire alive.

This is an excellent gathering to psyche you up for the convention weekend.  If you're an old school cosplayer, stop by and join us!  Feel free to pop in for a moment to say hi, see some incredible cosplay, pose for some pictures, and continue to prove that just because it's old doesn't mean it isn't awesome!

Thank you so very much.  Let's have another great turnout and continue this wonderful Fanime tradition!

Yay! Either would be awesome.

I was planning on something new for this year but changing careers shuffled it around a bit so we may bring back something older as I don't think it'll be ready in time.  We have one other new cosplay well under way, and while it falls into the Old School time range, it's too bulky to host a gathering in - so it's for another day instead.  :D

I'll be more active concerning the gathering beginning in mid January or so.

Yeah, I'll be more active on here after the new year(and after Sac-Anime). XD

And I'm sorry about that. :x But can't wait to see the new cosplay that you plan to bring even if it's not for the gathering! :D

Good afternoon old schoolers!

With 2019 underway and FanimeCon housing registration opening in just a few days, we're formally starting up the 2019 Old School (Pre-2001) Cosplay Gathering event page.

This will be our fourth year hosting this long-running FanimeCon event that celebrates anime (and manga, and video game, and live-action) legacy. 2019 is a truly special year as FanimeCon is celebrating a legacy of its own, the 25th year since it began.

If your cosplay character appears in Anime, Manga, Video Games or Live Action that began PRIOR to 2001, then this is the gathering for you! Although I like to have a decidedly Japanese lean to this gathering, it is not completely exclusive.

2019 gatherings are not yet official via FanimeCon, although our gathering traditionally takes place Friday evening. That should hold the same for this year, either 5pm or 6pm on Fanime Friday.

If you are interested in this gathering, please respond to the Facebook Event Page to stay up-to-date with information as FanimeCon gets closer. The corresponding Fanime Forums thread will be updated in tandem, as is usual.

Thank you so much, we hope to have another massive turnout and continue this wonderful Fanime tradition!

Outstanding!

I'm still going back and forth on whether to move to an outside location or stay where we were last year.  I'm leaning more toward having it in the same place as then I can keep it at 6pm (which has always been the biggest request from attendees), don't have to worry about poor lighting (sun behind the Hilton tower at that time), and we're indoors (erratic weather last Fanime wasn't an issue because of this).

Since I'll actually have the megaphone for 2019, I think I'll be able to push the crowd back a few more feet so we're not all smashed up against the stair platforms like in 2018.

After thinking about it more, that's what I'm going to do.  We plan on using G3 once again (same as 2018) but with a better handle on crowd control early on.

I've also amended the top of the photography list to start with a full group shot, then do by era, and to skip the timeline picture going forward - each decade should have their own shot, which also allows more space for the (generally larger) 80's and 90's groups, and more rest for the 60's and 70's groups that are generally up there most of the time.

Yeah, that sounds good!!

And speaking of old school, I'm hoping to take over the Rumiko Takahashi gathering, and plan on having it on Friday, as well(but an earlier time), so that any cosplayers cosplaying from her works can attend both gatherings that day!

Awesome!  Your group has become a staple of the Old School Cosplay Gathering.  ;D

And a copy of the Facebook Event Page post for today (not doing weekly posts yet but I wanted to make sure all info was mirrored as usual) :

Good morning old schoolers!

A bit of an update now that Fanime is kinda of waking up from its hibernation.  After some thought concerning gathering location I've decided to keep it in the same location as 2018, the G3 video room stairs.  This means we will also be able to utilize the same time as 2018, 6pm.  Of course, locations and times should still be considered TBA until Cosplay Gatherings Department begins their gathering registration process.

We're better prepared to handle the crowd this year (the observers, not the cosplayers - cosplayers have always been great at this gathering) and will try to ensure there is more space for cosplayers to both be able to get up on the stair platforms as well as move off without being absorbed into those watching the gathering.  I've also reworked the photography order for better flow and to allow everyone to get a few great shots.  More space from better crowd control also means I'll be more mobile to help set up shots so we get even better pictures of the gathering.  And as always, in addition to any official Fanime photographer we get, my co-host will be photographing the gathering and that full set of untouched full resolution pictures will be made available the week after Fanime.

As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns about the gathering (before or at-con), just let me know.  I will address them myself and bring them to the attention of Cosplay Gatherings Department as needed.  Do note, I am not Fanime staff but will assist in contacting them.  I'm not as active on Facebook as I once was but I do check in every few days, same with the FanimeCon Forums, so I'm easy to reach.

Good morning old schoolers!

With FanimeCon 2019 about four months away, we're going to begin our tradition of weekly posts - in other words it's the usual anime opening and endings posts on the weekends.  However to keep it from getting totally out of hand this year, we're only going to do one a week until closer to Fanime.  This is also because now we host a Fanime panel / game (which we have submitted again for 2019) centered around identifying what year an anime series began based upon the opening sequence.

There is a gathering update this week however!  We have updated the photography list once again, consolidating some groupings and setting the order up to be easier to move through.  With that, here is the old school anime opening for this weekend, a series that is celebrating its 30th anime anniversary this year!

Speaking of Ranma, there is also a Rumiko Takahashi gathering being planned for FanimeCon 2019 - https://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,21574.0.html - we are not hosting that one but do check it out!

Nothing new to report this week other than we are getting positively drenched in Fanime's backyard.  Cosplay Gatherings Department has stated on the Fanime forums that while the gathering form is not yet live, it is being worked on.  For this weekend, here's a series that began the same year that Fanime began.

Yeah, the scheduling looks pretty good so far!

Good afternoon old schoolers!

We're within two months of FanimeCon 2019. We've been tentatively confirmed at our usual time (6pm) and what is now our usual place (Gatherings G3) on Fanime Friday. We'll have a MUCH better handle on operating the gathering at location G3 this year. I don't want to get ahead of myself but I think this gathering's growing pains are behind it. I'm also going to be way more active here from this point forward, so if you have any questions - send them my way!

With less than two months until Fanime how about we resume the tradition I added to the gathering - a few old school anime openings and endings each Saturday and Sunday! Starting off with Gunsmith Cats, a very enjoyable little three episode (honestly a long one-shot) OVA based on the popular manga.

Good afternoon old schoolers!

Looking at the current gathering list, it's incredible how many gatherings have been submitted for this year! Things are still moving along unchanged for the Old School gathering, 6pm on Friday at location G3. With that, here are a few old school anime openings to kick off this weekend.

I'll start with the series that your gathering hosts will be cosplaying from. Cyber Formula is a superb and fairly realistic take on upper echelon motorsport. The third series, Zero, has always been my personal favorite. Mokkori Cosplay will be bringing back our Sugo Corporation pit crew (Double-One / Zero era) cosplay for the Old School gathering!

Continuing this weekend with more old school anime openings. Amazingly we're getting a second shot at a release of this one, Galaxy Express 999.

Interesting English subtitle history - after having a high-quality fansub get a couple dozen episodes in, Crunchyroll acquired the distribution rights and Toei created a quick and dirty English sub of the entire series for their service. Then a company who had no business acquiring the rights for a DVD release, essentially got the license and began to sell the low-resolution minimal Crunchyroll stream on DVD. Fans knew better though, no one bought it, and only one box set was released. Then, quite surprisingly, late last year Discotek Media announced they would be releasing the entire series (all 113 episodes) as three Blu-ray box sets with a brand new upscale - a full deluxe treatment. It is truly the best time for old anime.

Continuing on, a series that had its first English subtitled release just this last October! While many in the West may recognize Zillion from the old Sega Master System video games, the Sega Light Phaser design used as the laser guns in the series, and maybe the Zillion laser tag sets (which made their way to Brazil) - the series is well animated with a distinct style and has some great music. Well worth taking a look!

Closing out this weekend with Albegas, the series that was originally slated to be part of World Events Productions' Voltron series along with Armored Squadron Dairugger XV (Vehicle Voltron) and Hundred Beast King Golion (Lion Voltron). After the runaway success of Lion Voltron and the lukewarm reception of Vehicle Voltron (which was unwarranted as Dairugger is a really good series on its own), a continuation of their re-write of Golion was comissioned rather than adapting Albegas. Footage of Albegas was also slated to be used in an unreleased laserdisc arcade game, Cybernaut.

Good afternoon old schoolers!

Another week behind us and FanimeCon 2019 is that much closer.  We'll have a bit of an announcement later this weekend but first let's kick off some old school anime openings with a few having to do with law enforcement (of varying types).  Starting with Future Police Urashiman - apologies if the theme song gets stuck in your head.  MID-NIGHT SUB-MA-RIIINE!  Side note, the playing cards shown about 45 seconds into the opening are a parody of the ace design Nintendo used on their playing cards of the era.

Continuing along the same theme with the television adaptation of Patlabor, which followed the success of the OVA and first film. Our Patlabor cosplay (captains Kiichi Goto and Shinobu Nagumo) are currently out of the rotation for FanimeCon 2019 but will reappear at future events.

Good morning old schoolers!

Just about a month to go until FanimeCon and the Old School Cosplay Gathering!! Hope everyone is doing well and their convention and cosplay plans are coming along nicely. For old school anime openings today, I'm going to indulge myself a little as it was announced today that the City Hunter - Shinjuku Private Eyes theatrical movie will have screenings in US theaters ... AND the film will be released on home video in North America ... AND the original anime will be rescued and re-released as well, all courtesy of Sunrise and Discotek Media! Easily one of the greatest announcements for old school anime, at least in my opinion.

To that end, here are some City Hunter openings and endings, starting with the original. Still my pick for the "most 1980's" anime opening ever. While City Hunter has an amazing sound track (even the first episode uses five songs off the first album), the original opening theme performed by Kahoru Kohiruimaki has always been my favorite. Decided to go with an encode of the old ADV subtitled release that is floating around.

Continuing on with the second opening from the sequel series, City Hunter 2. Discotek Media's official announcement is that ALL the City Hunter anime will be re-licensed and re-released - all four TV series, the three anime OVA specials, and the three anime TV films, in addition to the new theatrical animated film currently showing in Japan.

Okay, I'll ease off of the City Hunter madness. So far the gatherings list for Fanime is pretty incredible, with a few classic fandom gatherings returning! One of which is Evangelion, which as per the current schedule will have a dedicated gathering on Saturday at noon. Eva cospeeps, feel free to double up and attend the Old School Gathering as well if you're also cosplaying on Friday evening!

And to finish up for this weekend, Outlaw Star - as we are always pleased to see the Outlaw Star crew at the gathering!

Absolutely!  As long as I attend FanimeCon, I plan on hosting the Old School gathering.  Since taking on hosting duties four years ago, honestly it just has been getting better ever year.  Nothing at Fanime means as much to me, as if it wasn't for attending this gathering years ago I probably would have never began cosplaying.

A quick appearance is what I would expect from Lupin!  Green jacket is best jacket.  Hope to see you there.

Good afternoon old schoolers!

Less than a month until Fanime and the Old School Cosplay Gathering - that's just crazy!  Personally, I'm definitely feeling the con crunch as months remaining have now turned into weeks.  Thankfully I'm almost finished with my cos-plans but there's still a lot to get done.

Going to kick off the weekend right with a few old school anime openings, as is standard.  First one today is a series that was recently released on Blu-ray with English subtitles - I actually just bought it last week during the Sentai Filmworks sale and it should be delivered today.

Resuming with a few more old school anime openings for today, beginning with a modern classic - although it's over twenty years old. As I said at our "Vintage Anime - Name That Year!" panel last year, if you were Ed's age when Cowboy Bebop premiered, now you'd be Jet's age - crazy.

Hasn't been enough shojo so far this year, so here's my personal favorite shojo series - celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, meaning it began the same year FanimeCon was first held.

Good morning old schoolers!

Fanime is closing in fast! I hope anyone that was on the housing waitlist has found success in obtaining lodging, and if not then obtained alternate accommodations. Personally the next three weekends are going to be big cosplay pushes, as new stuff is finished up, old stuff is brought out to be freshly pressed and checked, and wigs are to be styled (groan).

Starting today's old school anime OP's with a true classic and a staple of Tatsunoko's catalog.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sxKcF4VE9s

Continuing on today with a reasonably forgotten series. Primarily known in the West with extensive rewrites as the third generation of Robotech, the original Japanese series is an interesting war drama and highly recommended over the English localization.

A couple more for this Sunday, beginning with a very popular Go Nagai work.

Two weeks now, aaaaaaahhhhh!!!  Thankfully pretty much everything is done.  One more test fitting and one more run through my Saturday panel and I should be all set for Fanime - other than wig styling next Saturday but only two this year, and Haruka and Michiru aren't that complex for how I style them.

Good morning old schoolers!

In the home stretch, less than two weeks to go! I sincerely hope that your Fanime plans are further along than mine at this point! Kicking off the old school anime OPs with the Gundam series that lead to mainstream appeal in the West. Not the greatest series in the franchise but it sure did resonate with people when it was localized.

I've been staying reasonably modern retro with the old school OPs this weekend, so I'll continue with one of the most recent series that falls into the Old School Cosplay Gathering window - such an awesome opening theme.

Good evening old schoolers!

Here we are, one week away from the 2019 Old School Cosplay Gathering!!  Weather has been quite unstable in Silicon Valley over the past week and things aren't looking to change much as we move into Fanime week.  However early predictions are starting to align for clear skies over next weekend - here's hoping.

As this weekend is our last push for gathering advertisement, the old school anime openings and endings posts will be more frequent heading into Sunday and I hope they get everyone in the old school cosplay mood.  Starting with the first ending from Marmalade Boy - the type of weather I'm hoping we are given for Fanime.

Getting the blood pumping on this rainy weekend. Less than a week to go at this point!!

Continuing on with one of Leiji Matsumoto's classics.

For all those gearing up for a Saturday night cosplay push, we continue with my favorite of Go Nagai's works.

Celebrating An Era - 1970's! Cutey Honey (1973)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCX77Je16fk

Last Sunday before Fanime! If you pulled an all-nighter, hope it really wasn't all night. Few more old school anime OPs today before we get the maps up and sign off until next Friday.

Continuing on, CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA....

As I'm currently stretching / cycling Haruka Tenoh's (Sailor Moon S episode 106) driving suit for the Sailor Moon cosplay gathering on Sunday, I thought this one was appropriate. Remember, even if your cosplay falls into a series that has its own gathering over the weekend, as long as the series if from before 2001 it's good to go for the Old School gathering!

And to close out the old school anime OPs and EDs this year with my favorite anime opening. We'll have one more official post with the gathering location map.

Thank you all for putting up with my tradition of anime openings on the weekends running up to the gathering - I know they're not everyone's thing but I look at this gathering as a celebration of cosplayers who cosplay the older stuff - which in itself is a celebration of the history of anime and entertainment.

See you next Friday!

Yep, just a few days to go!

And our final official pre-gathering Facebook post:

Here is the map (over on the Facebook Event Page) showing the location of the Old School Cosplay Gathering, location G3. This is the same place we were last year, the elevated platforms between the stairs and escalator that go down to the video rooms on the very lowest level.

As there is actually a gathering in the location before us, we shouldn't have any issues with clearing convention attendees out of the space prior to the gathering. Additionally we will be proactive in keeping any crowd further back than last year, giving us more room to move around for the gathering.

We will be cosplaying in our Sugo Corporation pit crew uniforms from Future GPX Cyber Formula, so we should be reasonably easy to find. As with every year we have hosted the Old School gathering, we will be taking a full set of unofficial photos that will be provided, totally unaltered and non-watermarked, within one week of the gathering. Be sure to grab a business card (and a ribbon) from us before departing the gathering on Friday evening!

See you there!

Hello old schoolers!!

Thank you all so much for attending the FanimeCon 2019 Old School (Pre-2001) Cosplay Gathering!

2019 marked the fourth consecutive year we have hosted the gathering. The link below is the full gallery of pictures we took at the gathering as host and co-host.

https://www.facebook.com/pg/mokkoricosplay/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1081256252063516

This is the full set of high-resolution, unedited, non-watermarked, uncropped pictures from the gathering. Cosplayers - please feel free to share, tag, download, crop, use on your cosplay pages, etc. This is everything, so there may be some shots that are a bit blurry, or have someone moving, or are during a photo order setup - but they are all presented so you may crop and edit them as you see fit. We did the best we could, as always.  Additionally be sure to check out Fanime's official photo gallery from Friday at 6pm, as we had an official photographer this year as well!

The Official FanimeCon Cosplay Gatherings Department gallery can be found here, as official galleries are uploaded based upon timestamp, the gathering photos will be intermixed with other official FanimeCon photos taken within that hour - so be sure to look through the entire gallery:

This gathering is for you, for us, who cosplay as these characters! Thank you to all who attended or showed interest in this gathering. We hope to see you all again for FanimeCon next year and the 2020 Old School (Pre-2001) gathering!! It will always be held the evening of Fanime Friday!

Next year I'll make sure to be there on time! XD
